[Q] S5 Messaging Pop Up - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a Rom for us that has the S5 messaging pop-up? I'm coming from an S5 back to the Note 3 and I loved that option on the S5, but I couldn't stand being away from my Note 3 any longer.
Sure feels good to be back on the Note 3 train again!!!

If you're rooted with Safestrap installed, you can flash this. Works great on deodexed stock rom. Will probably work on odexed stock rom as long as you remove the stock SecMms.odex file in /system/priv-app and SecTelephonyProvider.odex in /system/app before flashing. As a general rule do a backup before flashing anything.

I believe it's also a feature of DynamicKat.

[Q] Disabling Touchwiz GNote?

Now, I'm currently running Gingerbread, and touchwiz is fine. But I've been looking at the leaked ICS for Note and its wrapped in touchwiz and looks kinda bad.
I was wondering if there is a way to disable/uninstall touchwiz on gingerbread (this would give me hope for ICS).
I mean disable, not cover up with another launcher or something similar.
Cheers
Gingerbread 2.3.6
You cant uninstall twframework, but you could if rooted do what you want.. Like remove the twlauncher with rootexplorer and push a orig launcher in there

Do you have root on your Note ?
Install an AOSP ICS ROM or the new MIUI ROM...Touchwiz free...and better than any stock firmwares.
Edit: I've honestly never run any Android device that wasn't rooted or running custom firmware. Most people don't around these parts anyway. Your everyday Jo probably couldn't even tell you what phone they have, let alone the operating system.
if you just don't like Touchwiz you can install another launcher, regardless of root and whatever ROM you are on.
Similarly, when Touchwiz ICS comes out you can just install nova launcher and a minute or two after the update already get rid of the gaudy colors and icons.
Probably the best will be when we get a post-alpha build of CM9 with everything including s pen apps working, but that may take a while

No not rooted yet. I have previosly rooted HTC Desire without problems and the Odin method looks pretty easy.

[Q] Getting my Bad boy today...

Hey Guys and Gals,
Just bought a Note, will be arriving in the next couple of hours.
Just a couple of questions -
Im coming from a GSII that has been running a custom ICS rom and really really love the features ICS brings and how it looks. I would like to run ICS on my Note from the word go as I feel going back to GB would taint my experience.
(Q) Am I correct in assuming that if I flash a custom ICS rom on my Note that I wont be able to use the S Pen features???
If im correct with the first question, then I will not flash a ICS rom immediately as I want to experience the S Pen and all its features to see if its for me. But I will want to Root it.
(Q) If I root my device will I still be able to update to the official ICS (When released) via a Update Notification or will I have to flash in a differant way???
Thanks in advance, and I look forward to becoming a part of the XDA Galaxy Note Community....

you are quite right my friend, the GB on note for now is perfectly fine if wanna try out the new features.. even i recently upgraded from s2 running ics and to be honestly the first day i was missing ICS badly but gb on note is different than when i first got s2 year back.. i am just waiting for the premium suite from samsung with specific new features for note and havent really been keen to try the cooked ics roms since i am more than satisfied having the note for over 2 weeks.. but eventually its what you want to do with your device that is the freedom of android but do give the forums a read as upgrading to ics has given many new users problems.. otherwise just root your LC1 ++ 2.3.6 rom and fall in love with note all over again.. enjoy your new phone and dont forget to get screen protector and some sexy cases cheers
You wont be able to use the s-pen's features on an AOSP/AOPK build. The only safe ICS roms at the moment are the CM9 based ones so you won't get any of the Samsung specific functions of the s-pen if you flash those.
You could flash an ICS rom based on the leaked firmwares and then use the DAFUQ kernel which to my knowledge doesn't have the flaws that could mess up your eMMC chip but that kernel is in alpha or beta status so some (minor) problems are to be expected when using it.
My advice, stay on GB for the moment. If you want to root, look for the thread in the Developer's section with the pre-rooted kernels. Just flash one of those with PC Odin and you're rooted without the chance of triggering the triangle and binary counter so you still have warranty. If you choose the same pre-rooted kernel as the one you are running now you should be able to OTA/Kies update your phone to the official ICS firmware when it's released but you'll lose root obviously.
There are some very good custom firmwares and great alternative kernels for GB in the Dev section as well if you still wanna tweak your Note.

GB is Gingerbread, the current version of Android OS on the Note. ICS is Ice Cream Sandwich, the updated version that will be released by Samsung in the near future.
Most alternative launchers can be themed, look for themes for your launcher in the Play Store.

Some people can wipe with affected kernels as often as they want without problems. Just because you didn't brick, DO NOT advise other users that they will be OK.

Rooting Note 3

So we don't have a recovery yet right? As in we can't flash rims like other phones ..?
No not yet we only have safe strap that allows us to put rooms on right now
Sent from my rooted Note 3
I don't get the OPS question. ROOTING and putting on ROMS or flashing is two different things.
Yes you can ROOT. Just Google Kingo Root. many have used it even on MJ5 and it works great.
No you cannot flash ROMS. You can use Safe Strap which fakes a flash by putting the ROM on your internal memory and then faking the boot system into using that ROM. You can actually put several ROMS on your phone at one time with this method and choose which to use at boot.
The draw back is that each ROM consumes a large portion of your internal RAM.
Or use the method that hasn't been banned here, by evilpotatoman.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559715
Skip step 3 if you already took the MJ5 OTA update and are running stock MJ5. Does not trip Knox if done properly. No questionable EXEs like kingo.

We do have a working recovery and safestrap also lets you flash on the system partition. It also uses no internal memory as long as you flash the rom to the "stock" slot.

So in other words we don't have regular recoveries like TWRP... stupid question like why can't we flash using regular methods?
Does this have a locked bootloader?

Flash over whatever you want from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2502049
But you WILL trip knox and void your warranty. That's what everyone is trying to avoid with other methods.
Edit: actually I think I interpreted that post wrong. Looks like it's only for the ROM parts.

Actually just ignore that entirely. You can use other methods to downgrade that don't trip knox, so there really is no point to that old thread now, I think. Saw extracted bootloader and thought it might have done the trick. Nope.

Click this link and make sure you only use the files labelled for the SGH-I537 US (AT&T) Active
Stay away from the international threads, a lot of their custom development won't work on your phone. The only "custom recovery" that won't brick your phone is SafeStrap and there isn't a huge selection of roms; the best choices right now are GoldenEye, Goldfinger, or Hyperdrive (if you like the touchwiz experience) and Pure Nexus if you prefer the AOSP look and feel
THANK YOU

Hyperdrive if you like touchwiz - Samsung's version of Android, how stock Samsung phones look but with more theming and customization, or
Pure Nexus if you like AOSP, so-called "vanilla" android, closest to how google makes android actually look (closest to the cyanogenmod look and feel). This rom (in both theming and overall experience) is based off of the Google Play Edition Galaxy S4.
Other than that there aren't many options. I would argue at the very least those are the two with the most support or ongoing development, although someone please correct me if I'm forgetting any others. Which of the two roms you choose I think really comes down to a fundamental personal preference: do you prefer Touchwiz or AOSP? Although again, someone chime in if you disagree with my assessment.
Im looking forward to install the Nexus room. I actually like more AOSP better than TouchWiz . Do i have to install the Google applications seperate or is already included on the room and SuperSU app?
Sorry to ask you many questions but your the only one helping me out and i appreciated your help!!

Good questions. You do not have to install the Google applications, they're included in the rom. You WILL however have to install SuperSU while installing the rom. Simply download UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip and flash it immediately after flashing the rom zip file (i.e. before you first boot up).
If you prefer AOSP over TouchWiz, definitely go with the Nexus rom. Just some notes, the first boot up will take a fairly long time, this is normal and just be patient. Actually it takes a while (I'd say up to a day or two) for the rom to really "settle in." And one noticeable bug that's easy to deal with: turn off Wi-Fi right before you either power off or reboot. If you don't do that, Wi-Fi will not work properly. Should you forget to do that, Wi-Fi can still be fixed with a hot reboot. So not a crippling bug, just something to keep track of. Other than that I can't think of anything, just good luck and make sure to always make backups before doing anything. It's always my pleasure to help whenever I can
bricked???
Can someone please help! My phone is showing the message: Update failed try again using kies ( or something very close to that), it won't enter recovery mode, all I can get to is Odin mode, yet when I try to flash the firmware it failed every time, out fails when it gets to boot in the dialog box. I tried to flash another boot animation, so I'm assuming that's where I went wrong, can someone please tell me what I can do to fix this? I'd be eternally grateful, thank you!

Wanting a Nexus 6, have a couple questions

.
I haven't flashed anything in over a year because I've been using a Verizon S5 which has little available for it. I'm wanting to buy a new Verizon Nexus 6 from eBay and have a couple questions -
Is the phone easily unlocked and rooted?
Can I flash any of the ROMs in the development section? http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/development
I just want to be sure I'm not buying another useless phone as my S5 is.

1. Yes. The "gotcha" now here appears to be SafetyNet is tripped with an unlocked bootloader (means if you use something like Android Pay, it won't work).
2. Yes. Obviously you cannot flash a 6.0 kernel on a 7.0 ROM and vice versa.
I myself own a Verizon Nexus 6 and it's easily been my favorite phone. It is easily unlocked and easy to root. I've flashed plenty of ROMs since I've had it. I've flashed Dirty Unicorns, Pure Nexus, Chroma, and a few others. Obviously, just do your research before flashing a ROM. As long as you know your way around, you'll not have any issues.
Thanks guys, I'm glad its all easily possible. I used to crack flash like crazy back when I had my Fascinate, Galaxy Nexus, and S4 with the unlocked mdk bootloader, but not with this locked down S5.
I don't use android pay and would be happy with a rock solid LP or MM ROM. Id like to try OctOs also, its been one of my favorites.

Thanks I've been out of the game for so long I feel like I know nothing, it will take some getting used to.
You will love the Nexus 6 after being locked down on that other phone. I have 2 one straight from Moto the other straight from google.
Easy to unlock boot loader - command line simple
Easy to Root
Power to do anything with this phone.
I love them and with all the xposed tweaks, Roms, and apps that can make the N6 do somuch more.
