ext app to compensate poor camera performance - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i just bought the new moto x, coming from a note 2 and I can tell that everything is amazing about this one... except the camera... I have no problems with the poor battery, since I charge my phone every day (note 2 could take up do 2 days without charging)
i had an option in note 2 stock camera app which was called "low light" that could improve a lot my night pictures. it would still be grainy, but it seemed to make my pictures betters...
since the hardware on moto x 2014 is the same from galaxy s4, if I install another camera app, should I get better results?

where did you buy it ????

Here in Brazil the phone is available since yesterday!

Try Camera FV-5. It's a great camera app.

Speaker + camera quality.

Own and love the Galaxy Nexus, I think 16gb is well more than enough storage for on-the-go music and app combination.
The two major issues I have with it however are:
1) The camera quality.
I find the image quality quite grainy after taking photos. The camera just doesn't cut it for me. However I'm hoping that the 8MP camera on the Nexus4 (I know megapixels isn't everything) will solve that issue.
***2) THE SPEAKER LOUDNESS***
I think of the old Christmas poem "Night Before Christmas"...
"'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even the Gnexus at max volume".
That'll be the deciding factor on if I'll be picking up the phone or not, in all honesty.
Love you XDA,

Well its not release yet, but we can take a few clues.
Base on this review: www.youtube.com/watch?v=a24txcFBWyE
the LG Optimus G have very weak speaker, saying that when on its back, one might even miss a phone call. Although that doesn't necessarily mean it will be the same for the Nexus 4.
As for camera, I have no proof that the 8MP camera of this device is similar to one on the Optimus G for ATT, but maybe if it is, we can look at those sample shots posted online. I think the general consensus is its not that great and might have trouble under low lighting. Overall I think it will be at least better than the current 5MP which is enough for me.
Just wait for feedbacks from other buyers before making the purchase.
PS. I still laugh at the fact when the Galaxy Nexus was just released people claimed its 5MP camera is better than the SII camera, even with side by side pictures comparison.
I'm disappointed it won't support GLONASS, base on the specs from the PlayStore.
The camera uses a Sony BSI Sensor, so I'm sure images will be crisp and sharp. Not sure what aperture it uses though, hopefully a f2.4/2.6.

Well, just a very very simple thought: they advertise with their new feature, that panorama thing .. that's one selling point.. so the camera quality MUST be good, right?
Oh man, but I just remember Apple's Maps service ... hmmm.
Here's hoping both are better on the Nexus 4 as they are both somewhat of a disappointment on my Galaxy Nexus for me.

From Josh Topolsky's initial impressions, he stated that the camera performance was a big improvement, and that Google has specifically concentrated on low-light performance. I have high hopes that a Sony sensor, let alone a BSI sensor, leads to respectable if not admirable image quality. If the f/2.4 aperture is an indication, we could easily see this sensor beat the GS3 in terms of how much light it lets in, but it all comes down to how aggressive noise correction is, which is entirely software, and affects image sharpness the most.
While the camera is a big deal to me (a BIG deal), what I'm more worried about is the speaker/earpiece output. As everyone knows, the GNex speaker and earpiece aren't great (that's putting it mildly), so I'm really hoping this phone has great speaker/earpiece volume. Do I expect it to rival my SIII? No. But being able to actually use the phone as a PHONE in a crowded place and being able to hear would be nice.
According to Cnet- The battery life and Camera are the two weakest points of the Optimus G (ATT)- its unbelievable how the google nexus phones have sourly disappointing cameras year after year.
It is becoming a HUGE feature for people- and while software can correct come issues- hopefully it does, it has to have a good sensor to start- which the LG should.
I guess we will have to wait for a proper review to get some camera samples. that is def make or break for me. coming from a One X, so camera bar is set rather high
Sony makes the camera for the legendary iPhones so I don't see why they would disappoint now.
Wonder how it would compare to the Lumia 920

ATT Optimus G has 13 mpx camera and LTE.
maybe that's why google decided to go without the 13 mpx camera and without LTE.
the 8 mpx camera which is also used in the sprint version is supposed to be better.
and leaving out LTE saves battery.

I mean that would be great as Sony makes the best sensors right now …
Thats pretty much one of my biggest selling points as i use the cameras a lot..

I dont expect the 920 to be great...the 900 was overhyped with the ziess lens and was garbage. the 920 will have GREAT low light photos- that much we know...as for regular performance, I think it will still be slightly below the top notch camera phones (S3, OneX, iphone, etc)
Praying the nexus 4 has a great camera...if so, I will snatch it up.
and what about capture speed ?
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
The One Series camera's and the Lumia 920 have a lower aperture f2.0 which is better suited for low light conditions. Now I'm pleased with the HOX camera, this has to be on par at least for day shots as I rarely take that many low light shots.
Be interesting to know what BSI module it uses so we can make comparisons!
I hope the camera is good same as speakers..

[Q] Optimus 4X PANORAMA MODE

Hi everyone
I just bought myself an LG Optimus 4X, upgraded it to V10f...I am from Europe, and perhaps I will root the phone. I have not decided yet. I changed this phone and went from my old Apple 3G, which became very slow. But the main reason why I was looking for a new phone is because I have a 3 year old daughter, and I do not have my camera with me all of the time. And some of the pictures from iPhone could have been better. I was thinking of buying iPhone 4S, afterwards wanted iPhone 5, but the line was just too long. Also, I was a bit disappointed by Apple not making the iPhone a tad bigger at least 4,3 inch. Which I think is the right size. Anyway while looking at Samsung S3 from my colleagues at work, to which I had to configure all those Galaxys I decided to buy something a bit different. And I really liked the Optimus 4X simple design. I liked the Optimus Black before, but decided not to buy it because of 5MP camera. I have my 4X now for the second day. I haven’t transferred around 800 contacts from my iPhone yet, since I am looking for the best and pain free way to do that. But I will find a way that does not bother me. The main issue so far or complaint I have is that in all the reviews on the web, YouTube...No one mentioned that PANORAMA mode is limited to VGA resolution. What is up with that LG? The phone has four-4 nVidia cores, and all we get is VGA? Any ideas how to change that? Also taking pictures one by one while pressing button repeatedly has some lag.
Does this mod do anything?

It really do... Need to know more about cause a lot of people think that "our" is good and, for me is the worst camera I ever had since phones starts to have 5MP at least...
To the OP,
I personally use JB Camera+ (it is $1.99 from Google Play) but it works really great with Panorama shots and it shoot in full 8MP.. Best thing, is that it also comes with the JB Gallery app. Very much worth it in my books.
Give it at try https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.moblynx.camerajbplus&feature=nav_result#?t=W10.
IDK how much this will cost in Europe tho.

I used to have a N4, compared to that, this phone is a stupid piece of....

...amazing hardware! I got my N5 a couple of days ago (bought at launch hour, used comGateway to forward it to India, takes time ) and so far I've been playing with it non-stop (have a few exams prep leaves ), and here are my impressions so far.
My background: I'm a huge Nexus fanboy, I own (or have owned) every Nexus device with the exception of Nexus Q and currently possess fully working Galaxy Nexus (16GB), Nexus 4 (16GB), Nexus 7 (2012, 16GB) and Nexus 7 (2013, 32GB) all bought more or less at launch along with a Galaxy Note and Galaxy S2. My device before was my N4 bought at launch and it was great, but I can't simply skip my temptation to get the new N5, so I did. I don't care about the price, I can very well afford a phone far more expensive. I buy Nexus devices because I love the pure stock experience they bring, it just somehow feels better to me.
Note: I've been using N4 exclusively before this for almost a year, so all my views are in relation to it.
My device: White Nexus 5, 32GB. Pure stock with an unlocked bootloader and rooted.
The Good:
Bigger, better screen! The screen is taller without being (much) wider, and it's gorgeous! I know some people are saying colours are washed out etc, but that's just the IPS display which I'm used to, plus when colour control gets modded into kernels that won't be much of a problem. It's a lot sharper than my N4 and definitely brighter]
Performance! It has the highest binned Snapdragon 800! Need I say more? It can smoke anything out their
Storage is a welcome improvement, sometimes I had to choose between games on my N4 but with double the storage I don't have that problem (atleast for a while )
Camera is a lot more improved than the one on N4, I haven't tested it too thoroughly but it's definitely improved especially in low light conditions
KitKat and GEL are a welcome change, I like the subtle UI improvements and I love the fact that BT audio and software audio levels are not two different things anymore, that used to drive me crazy
I love the white version's looks and build, I was torn what to get when purchasing this from the Play Store but decided to go with the white since it's different. The speaker grill adds a really nice touch IMO and back has a good feel to it. Personally I'd prefer a little more build, but with the ceramic sides and everything it's nice, definitely not cheap.
The Okay:
Battery life, meh. This was expected, it's slightly better than N4's but still not great. On my first run I was able to get out about 2 hours of SOT with 1 hour of GPS, 1 hour of audio over BT, and a lot of updating/downloading games. So that's not bad, N4 lasted me a day and I don't see N5 doing any worse, if anything it'll do better when I switch to custom kernels
Speaker is an improvement but nothing great
The Ugly:
Camera shutter lag, I absolutely hate this. Maybe I'm crazy or something but I hate that it takes a lot of time to click pictures, with the chance of entirely blurring out the picture when given to someone else. Hopefully something improves this
No always on listening , I was hoping for this feature from Moto X
TL;DR: Get the freaking device. It's awesome. And get it in white, seriously.
Lmao you got me with the thread title.
Very clever! Good thread!
Google should make a COMPLETELY new camera app, and upload it to the Play Store for everyone to enjoy. And they should do that quickly. Current camera app is terrible! (The shutter lag it because of the software, not the hardware)

Yes! Just found this last night and played around with it:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spritefish.fastburstcameralite
The quality is a little less than the regular camera, but there is zero shutter lag. The paid version is $2 and it allows you to tap focus and take nicer pictures when you want to. Will still need the standard camera for HDR+ mode (which takes excellent shots that this can't touch).

Camera and audio quality

Hello everybody,
I'm going to buy a Moto X because I really like it, but I noticed that it has two problems.
1. The camera quality is good (if it could be improved, it'll be better), but in low light the video has a bad focus but above all a low frame rate.
2. The audio recorded has a nice quality; however, with loud volumes like concert or wind, it has distorsion.
Are these problems solvable in some ways or is the Moto X hardware limitated?
Thanks. Bye!
I guess we'll have to live with this camera. (Indoor mode is not great).
And audio I'm not sure!

Are you in a hurry to buy a phone? If not, I'd suggest waiting it out until the X+1 comes out later this summer/early fall. From what I've read, it sounds like a beast of a phone. If it lives up to the hype, I'll be getting one when my contract expires in November. Otherwise, you really can't go wrong with the usability of the X. The camera could use improving, but don't let that sway you from buying this device. I had my reservations about it as well when I first got mine, but I have no regrets.
Yes, I need a phone now!
If Moto X's video with low light and audio recording at a concert or disco could be improved, I'll buy it surely.

Nah I totally hear ya I was just picking on you. Not everyone carries around a DSLR for the hell of it, most people just have their phone. With the advancements Moto has made with the camera software, I honestly think the hardware is in the right place. From what I understand 4.4.4 is supposed to bring even better camera improvements over 4.4.2. Just pull the trigger and get one!
Yeah, but I tried a Moto X; in disco the audio is crappy (so at a concert I think it'll be even worse), and if there isn't a lot of light, the frame rate slows (for example, at night in a road or in a house with low lights).
4.4.4 solves this problems? If not, are they solvable with mod, tweaks, etc.?

No mod or tweaks can help it. If camera is a priority for you then you might wanna stay away from Moto X. Also 4.4.4 might bring some colour accuracy, but there will not be any significant changes. Go for XZ1C, again, if camera is the priority. The main problem with X's camera is it's inconsistency, you need to depend on your luck with it. Also there is slight purple hazing on low light shots, the sensor is far from being good, along with the optics.
Then buy a nice camera. Phones are phones with cheap cameras thrown in for kicks and giggles. ?

Nope. Anyone.
Every phone "camera" is terrible compared to even my $99 Kodak camera. Which is tiny and quite easy to carry around....especially if I know I'm gonna want to take pics where I'm going.
Phones are nice for those "crap...I don't have my camera" moments....but they are just never going to replace an actual camera...not if you want consistently decent pics. Yet people seem to expect phones to make "better" cameras all the time. Or are disappointed by the "cameras" their new phone has. Phone cameras will never be great.....not when the "real estate" for camera hardware is miniscule compared to an actual camera.
Just my 2 cents.
Opinions will vary, and to each their own. ?
---------- Post added at 08:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:56 PM ----------
BTW....if phone cameras were sold separately... With no phone, they'd be worth about $25. That should put the phone camera quality discussions in perspective.
Any news or other comments? Are there some camera or audio recording improvements for this phone?
Are camera's problems like low frame-rate and bad focus in low light and audio distorsion with high volume like concerts solvable in some way?

what are things you wish it had?

I find myself living the sensors a lot. Waving over to check the screen and then waving over thinking it will close. Has any one else done this besides me? Do you think it might be a battery saver?
I wish it had the Moto X body with the Droid Turbo hardware and a mSD slot or at least the 64 GB option from the Nexus 6. Motorola just about build the perfect phone this year, but split it among 3 models.
yea
I wish it had a micro SD slot also. What about 5 inch. Display for one handed use? What about software they could update or install?
1) Better camera. One that was up to par with other flagships.
2) Dual speakers. Guess they saved that for the Nexus 6. What a tease.
3) Wireless charging.
4) Could do with a bigger battery, but at the same time, I understand the importance of form factor for a 5.2" screen.
That's about it, I guess. I would've been willing to pay $650 for these additional things.
Currently, the camera is the #1 thing holding me back from the Moto X. The other missing things I can live with.
Wireless charging, maybe... The battery is a non-issue for me as this little battery gets as much SOT as my G3 did with a much larger battery. I don't care about the camera and this speaker is way louder than my previous phones, so I can't complain there either. Oh, maybe an IR blaster for the TV might be nice... But that's it, and even then they're not huge deals for me. This thing is basically perfect for my needs.
iPhone 6's camera & wireless charging.
Then I'd be in heaven
32Gb is plenty for me, the battery gets me through the day just fine and dual speakers (while a nice addition) are not that important for a phone IMO, as long as a single speaker is loud & clear enough (which it is in this case)
S805 and better battery life. I would sell my iPhone 6 immediately for that.

+1 this. This is the biggest gripe I have right now. The Droid Turbo is ugly and it's capacitive buttons are were outdated 2 years ago, the Nexus 6 is too big, and the Moto X still isn't up to flagship status. That combined with the locked bootloaders of Verizon just make me angry. Droid Turbo hardware in a Moto X case and screen with a mSD slot for expandable storage and an unlockable bootloader? Count me in for one even if it were $800.
1: Unlockable bootloader (VZW)
2: Dual front facing speakers
3: Micro SD slot
4: Better camera with OIS
5: Wireless charging
From what I can tell the camera issue is software related not hardware. I read on a review that a guy used a different camera app from the market and the results were much better. I can't find the article ATM though.

Yup I think I read that it has the same actual camera module as some of the slightly older Samsungs? S3 S4 or whatever. They took good pictures so its definitely software.
Bigger battery and SD card slot. That'd take it into superphone territory.

Easy! Install Xposed, then install Twisty Switch module.

I wish it had better reception on non-3G/4G bands- the standard GSM radio performance is pretty terrible on mine!
I'll add one more here. A slightly brighter screen for outside. While it's not terrible, it's not great either.

For those of us on VZW and without root, this isn't easy.
Things we need -
1. Root.
2. See above.

Agree with all the points. I could actually live with the current battery, I still manage 4hours screen on time with my use. I'm tempted for the Nexus 6, but the size put it out of the equation for me. I'm not really fond of the Droid Turbo design.
yes
It would be a flagship phone if it had:
Bigger battery
Expandable SD slot
Dual speakers
I like the size of the phone is classified under smartphone and not tablet (coming front note 4) so it fits better in the hand but still kind wish it was around 5 inches for a better one hand use. Would have been nice to have a headset made just for the phone Just saying...
Not to much to complain about though i love that it's software based so it gets updates faster.
