[Q] HTC One flash or not? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i mostly lurk and it has been some time since i posted anything here. i'm not a developer just a heavily dependent user. i have an AT&T HTC One M7 that is over a year old now and am not getting the 4.4.4 update (stuck on 4.3 with software #3.17.502.3) and thinking of doing something different with my device. i dont use the blink feed that comes on the phone (after market launcher called everything me) and other apps for calendar and calling. what is the advice of the group, should i flash a different rom or just stay with what i have? if y'all think i should change, what is a good rom to change to? any and all advice is appreciated.

Sorry, we can not recommend ROMs and the decision to flash or not is a personal one. If you want to update your phone you can find RUU's at AndroidRUU or HTC 1 Guru they are the Cellular ones. Pick the one with the same or higher version number. Or you could visit this thread and get a more updated version.
Just a FYI: to get updates you must have a stock rom, stock recovery, if s-on bootloader must be locked and what ever apps that are being updated must be present on your phone.

Upgrade IncS to ICS via HTCDev website

I am using an incredible s on Virgin Mobile Canada. I am being told that this device is not being updated to Android 4.0. Instead, HTC told me to go to htcdev[dot]com/devcenter/downloads to download the operating system. I have a couple questions;
1. What region do I use; TW, WWE, AU, TUR, SPA, HK CHT, CN CHS, etc. ?
2. What description number; 4.08.1400.5, 4.14.980.2, 4.10.708.1, etc. ?
And most importantly,
3. How do I do install the new operating system on my phone?
Would be a great help! Thanks! :cyclops:

Thanks, But on the HTCDev site there is only a CRC. Is this the same? Will it update to ICS? If not, can I use an RUU for another device instead?
and is it possible to do on a mac via the htcdev website?
and does the phone need to be rooted?

Virgin Mobile gave you bad information. At the HTCDEV.com site, you will only find the kernel source code for the devices. HTC no longer has a public download site where you can download the actual RUU (ROM Update Utility).
You need to go to the Development section and look at the "Shipped ROMs" sticky thread. There you will find a link to a site that has several RUU's for the IncS. You probably want to get the ICS WWE 4.10.405.1 RUU.
Upgrade, deregionalise without GoldCard?
QUOTING FROM THE DEVELOPMENT THREAD (I'm not allowed to post there):
Default HTC releases 3 ICS RUU on HTCDEV.com
HTC has posted 3 Incredible S ICS RUUs on [htcdev]
All 3 are labeled 4.14.405.2 and when I examined the N.American/Canadian version here is what I found:
1. android-info.txt lists all IncS modelids and has wildcards for most CID. This means that this RUU is generic and probably could be used on any IncS WITHOUT the need for a goldcard.
2. HBOOT version is now 2.03.
3. A newer radio is included.
ENDQUOTE.
Thanks for this, I've been reading the forums for two days now trying to figure out what the best way to upgrade my Incredible S is. This looks like it might be it, but I would like to make sure -- any advice is appreciated.
I am using an Incredible S from Virgin Mobile Canada. It is running the stock Android 2.3.3 OTA update from August 2011. I left Canada and paid to have Virgin SIM unlock the phone. Since then I have never seen another operating system update notification, I assume because I am now decoupled from Virgin's update server or some such.
The phone is S-ON and that's fine, I do not need anything fancy or custom, at least for now. I would just like my phone to receive stock HTC Incredible S upgrades -- I know there is one for 2.3.5 which I hear is quite good.
I spent last night making a GoldCard -- but now, as your post makes clear, it looks like there is a stock Android 4 RUU that will upgrade my phone and de-regionalise it. Does this sound right? I have downloaded the RUU you linked (they list 3, but I think it's all the same file, which is encouraging since I want it de-regionalised), and I'll hunt down a Windows machine to run it if indeed this is what I want.
Two further questions:
How best to backup the phone? I've seen apps like Titanium but it looks like the phone needs to be rooted. Is it really possible to revert back to 2.3.3 afterwards? From what I'm seeing it looks as though downgrading can be as hard as upgrading.
Do we know if this release of Android 4 is really better than 2.3.5? If it's still buggy, perhaps using the GoldCard and 2.3.5 would be worth it.
Thanks very much.
I understood that your phone is s-on, but do you still have warranty to force you to stay, or you want to try to s-off? I'm asking you this cause if you s-off your device you'll have a wide range of possibilities for roms without need to make a gold card or use RUUs, even with Revolutionary hboot. Also, returning back to s-on from Revolutionary s-off is not hard at all.

The posts above yours were made before HTC posted official ICS RUU's on htcdev.com

Thanks for the replies.
Regarding S-OFF, I will certainly think about that in the future; for now I'm happy with just sticking to the official HTC upgrades and see how I like it.
I agree that this new ICS RUU from htcdev looks like it will work straight out of the box, as it were. Only my two final questions remain:
1. How best to backup the phone?
2. Is ICS going to run slowly/buggily on my Incredible S (now an older phone)? I suppose the only way to be sure is to try it...
Thanks again.

There have been complaints of ICS running slowly on IncS, that is with the official release, however many custom roms are lightning fast..

This is the file I used to upgrade my incs to ICS: http://dl4.htc.com/RomCode/Source_and_Binaries/One_Generic_code_Vivo.zip
I'm on Bell Canada, the above file is a generic Canadian ROM. You'll be missing the Virgin bloatware, but if you need it, you can get it from the Google Play Store.
How are you finding it runs, noticeably better or worse than Gingerbread?
Thanks.

[Q] Probability HTC One Google Edition ROM

Hi All,
Apologies in advice if the question I am asking is going to come across as a silly one.
I am about to purchase a new HTC One 4G LTE phone.
It will have the 4.2.1 OS with Sense 5.
I was holding out for the Google Edition but apparently it will take months before it gets to my region.
I am very new to the whole Android ROM flashing and BootLoader unlocking process - so am yet to understand how it all works, and hence here is my question
What is the probability that in the near future that I get to replace the current ROM with that of the ROM on the new Google Edition HTC Ones being released this month in the US.
HTC has released something on htcDEV for the Google Edition - what exactly is it?
Will it only be a custom ROM that mimics / or tries to do a close port of the Google Edition HTC One ROM - or will it be exactly the same?
Keen to understand how it all works and if I should wait or just go ahead and purchase my new phone.
Cheers.

The probability is very high that you can replace your current Rom with the official Google one...you'll have choices to choose from...if you want you can go from what exactly Google has provided or you can go more custom but with Google's kernel source in there... Whatever you wish...they released the kernel source on HTC dev..this basically killed any bugs we had left in our custom roms ..we can implement that in there...
I'm the next few days you'll see more development coming through with this new release
Presumably you can, since it's all the same phone with same specs. Best of all, devs will probably be able to fill in the missing gaps in original roms using data from the GE phone.

HTC One Google Edition ROMs?

Hey guys, I just purchased a Google Edition HTC One and I'm waiting to receive it from shipping. My question is can I flash ROMs from the HTC One international version? Im not exactly sure how the Google Edition is identified so I'm not sure if I'm suppose to be sticking to this forum section for international unlocked devices or AT&T version for instance.
I know that despite it is a Google Edition, if I recall correctly, it's just possibly an AT&T or T-Mobile variant. So I just wanted to know, if I am going to be flashing ROMs onto this Google Edition HTC One, which version of the phone I should be in for forum sections before I cause irreversible damage. I really want to get Paranoid Android or Revolt ROM onto it ASAP.
Thanks for any insight

So, this is the forum you want, go to original android dev in this forum, these roms are there but still waiting resources from google!!, if you are asking about sense roms, i think you will be able flash them once you achieve s-off and supercid

Is there a reason why I must stay specifically in original android development? The ROM I'm eyeing is in the android development section. I'm not looking for any sense ROMs. I love the stock experience with the ability to change DPI's on my apps. That's it. Sorry if I'm not understanding it all right away, so I will be in HTC One forum but cannot jump into android development section just yet? I don't get what you mean by resources from google.
quick side note question, is the google edition bootloader unlocked?
Thanks for the quick responses
edit: i just realized Revolt ROM 4+, the one I'm looking to load, is in android original development. didn't mean to confuse anyone.
Anyone have answer to my earlier questions?
I wonder why anyone would want to buy a Google search edition phone but all you simply have to do is flash an appropriate ROM on the normal HTC One.

To answer your question.. I'm sure you'll be able to flash any roms you would like...don't see a reason why not same hardware basically
You can flash roms from the international version make sure have the things that are required for the rom you like take a look around there's plenty already
thanks.

[Q] Kernels and Firmware and all that?

Hey up chaps,
I've been on the site for a while and really enjoy the contribution that all the developers and everyone makes. I've mostly read stuff and never really bothered to make any threads or anything, as everything on here is self explanatory.
Anyway, I was just wanting a bit of clarification really. I've read the threads about flashing a new firmware, and the stuff about kernels, but I still have a bit of an issue understanding it all, and how it would affect me.
My understanding is that the firmware controls all the basics of the phone, like touchscreen, microphone, speakers, radio and all that stuff. And a kernel controls the way in which it works. Is that right?
I got my HTC One last August, and then unlocked it and rooted it, and then I put the Viper Rom on it, I think it was last updated to 4.3 Android OTA, the phone is an unlocked european (international) model.
I've often contemplated making the phone S-Off as I believe that gives a few benefits. Would I need to do that to put the latest firmware on it?
Would the latest firmware available on this forum make much difference to my phone? I don't have any concerns with it at the moment, but I'm always pleased when its updated and things work better or there are new features. How would I go about doing it? Would I have to wipe everything, and put a stock HTC international ROM on it to be able to update the firmware? Or could I flash it like I would with a ROM?
I'm not a developer or anything, but I can figure some things out with a little instruction.
I'll include the numbers in the bootloader in case anyone can advise me whether its worth upgrading the firmware/and or flashing a kernel.

Would something like this website be a good first step: http://firewater-soff.com/ ?
Oh, and I have TWRP 2.6.3.3 and Viper ROM 6.1 at the moment. And I upgraded from the standard network unlocked ROM, it wasn't branded or anything when I bought it originally.
My build number is listed as 4.19.401.11 is that something that is related to the ROM or the actual phone? I was under the impression that it was the latter. http://forum.freeware.info.pl/gry/gothic.html
Is anyone able to shed any light on this for me? Thanks a lot.

S-off is good, very good - get s-off before you update to hboot 1.56
will you see any improvements with a new firmware ...probably not
not much changed between 4.3 and 4.4.2 firmware wise

Yeah. I've been using sense 6 happily on Viper Rom. I don't know whether the incremental android update would make much of a difference.
I heard someone saying that an updated firmware would improve the battery life. I've been looking at that firmware thread and still can't get my head around it.
Firmware varies on performance/battery life. Having the latest firmware might not positively effect your device in terms of signal strength and battery life.
For example I have an AT&T One on their network I always try out the latest firmwares available across the board. Some improve network performance while others drain my battery very quickly and any combination of either or.
If you notice some Carrier Updates include different radio versions when compared to another carrier with the same Android/Sense Version. Those carrier specific firmware updates are released in favor of their network. Not always do the carriers release optimized radio firmwares.
I've tried firmwares releases for the European unlocked HTC One that worked better then a firmware AT&T released.
In the end firmware updates (Radio updates specifically) are a trial & error process of finding out which one works best for you situation.
Kernels on the other hand are in most cases better as they are released. Since they offer bug fixes and performance updates and sometimes offer feature updates that come in handy down the road. Running a custom rom you will use the kernel that the developer choices, some use stock kernels since they offer the best stability. Others recommend using a custom kernel since they offer more features like 'tap to wake' or under/overclock of cpu and gpu... etc
Just like firmware updates, kernels are a trial & error process. Some offer great performance and battery life when combined with particular roms and settings, while others are horrible.
In the end its all a matter of what you prefer and the combinations of radio, firmware, roms. What works perfectly for me might not for you so take suggestions from others with a grain of sand. We don't live with you and don't do the things you do. You might love playing games or taking pictures, while I simply like to surf the web and email.
What you said makes perfect sense. Thanks for that. I do a variety of things on my phone, not one thing over the other, so I'll get the phone s-off and then try out the latest firmware I think. http://m.freeware.info.pl/indy-cat.html
So I'm now S-OFF, and I've updated the bootloader to remove the hboot developmental red warning.
Whats the best course of action now? I've looked into radios, but not sure where I stand with that. My phone is an unlocked international model, and I'm in California on T-Mobile. Would putting the t mobile radio make much difference? Or should I just go with the latest firmware? From what I've read that includes a radio.
This is the latest firmware I would flash isn't it?

Many thanks for the help.
Using T-Mobile radio will benefit you since there tailored to US side of things, but you won't know until you try... Those zip aslong as they have the radio.img and the text file you can delete all the other things if you wish if not just flash them all.

Thanks for that. I'll give that a go tomorrow and see what happens. I don't really have any problems with signal, and I know as my phone is a uk model there isn't any chance of me being able to utilize the 4g network. http://online.freeware.info.pl/shakes&fidget.html
Hello again,
I'm looking at this thread:
http://online.freeware.info.pl/klondike.html
and I'm a little confused about which radio I should put onto my phone. I'd like to give the T Mobile US radio and firmware a go but there are a couple of different ones listed in that thread and I'm uncertain about which to go for.

There's currently only 1 Android 6.0 ROM that works on Sprint M8 and it is quite buggy since it's an alpha release. Here's the link:

Sprint has some "extra" stuff installed on their phones that requires a ROM with Sprint compatability to work. Flashing the normal HTC firmware onto the Sprint hardware will cause a brick.

Besides radio, there's some apps inside that Sprint put in, like the Kids Mode app and some other Sprint bloat. I don't know much about this bloat since I was never on Sprint's network.

The Marshmallow Rom port for Sprint isn't buggy at all. I was using it with Xposed and it ran great. You definitely can run as your daily.

It's not just extra stuff, it's the phone structure even system partition. Basically Sprint network is cdma but it has a option to run gsm when Sprint customer travels international. But it's a cdma global phone. International M8 is totally different than cdma global and hence you won't be able to run international ROM unless developer made a port for Sprint version. Many peopl bricked their phones and wasted many days fixing it, including me lol.. it's not worth trying

I used to have Bad Boyz ROM for my daily drive. I tried GPE ROM with Android 5.0 and all other Sprint compatible ROMs including Viper ROM. I also tried to flash international ROMs, but had lot of issues (one of the issue I can reacall is system partition was screwed up after flashing - which caused issued with playing music, music wouldn't play continuously). Then I got a new phone from Sprint with Uh Oh protection guarantee and never rooted it ever since. It works like charm, though I struggled not to root in the beginning.. Have a Nexus 7 for all the tasting stuff . Until HTC releases Android 6.0 I have no issues living with Lollipop, its still great!
