I have been interested in the Moto X ever since the release late last year and now its at such a great price... But I must ask everyone that has already made the jump, is this device what I am looking for?
At the moment I have a Galaxy S3 through At&t loaded up with CM 10.1.3 and to be honest I am happy with the phone... but am becoming more anxious for a upgrade each day, mostly due to the abysmal battery life and non-support for things I like *wallet*.
Anyways needless to say I am about ready to upgrade to something fresh and new. I am choosing to go unlocked because AT&T is offering a discount towards customers who do not take up a subsidized plan.
Naturally I checked out the Google Play edition phones and the Nexus line first, I was hoping the X would be among their ranks, after all google did own motorola up until a week ago. However all they had was the Moto G which was is the lower end sibling to the X.
So thats when I started really digging in and when I found out motorola actually sells unlocked phones through their site. The T-mobile one being the best choice because you can unlock the bootloader and it still supports at&t fully in the USA. The only other option would had been the GSM developer edition, but I would have to forgo any customization for very little benefit in the end.
But I am sitting here wondering to myself... is now a good time to get a new phone, is this the right choice, would this phone make me happy for at least a year and half?
My largest concern with this phone is its future, how much longer can/will motorola support updates for the X? Will we see the next version of android come to this device before its antiqued by motorola? If it is shelved, is the community broad enough to provide quality unofficial updates that will offer a wonderful experience?
I mean when I look at the development section just for the AT&T galaxy S3 there is numerous ROM's several of them being official groups like CM and AOKP. But then when I checked the CM site for the T-Mobile Moto-X there is nothing, it is literally blank, is it because they don't believe the Moto X yet needs CM to fill in the gaps, or is it because they have no interest in supporting it at all?
I would pick a Nexus 5, given it is guaranteed fast updates, but the Moto X just seems like a better fit for me. I love the idea of the anywhere handsfree google now, the style of the phone just looks better, and it is stock-enough for my needs.
I guess ultimately these are my biggest questions.
1. How future-proof do you guys think this is, at least update wise? Since CM does have a page for the Moto-X does that mean they will support it eventually? The phone is widely regarded and to my knowledge quite popular, I dont see why the carrier-locked boot loader would stop CM when it didn't for other handsets.
2. What is battery life like? Given alot of you have probably had the phone for a few months, hows the battery life now, is it degrading badly?
3. Overall would this be a good upgrade coming from a GS3?
4. Should I save up and get a Nexus 5 or another google play device?
5. Is it a good time to upgrade? Or should I wait a month or two?
6. How is the camera? Is it really much worse than the GS4, IP5S, and Nokia Lumina camera's?
7. Does it support google wallet? Does it lack support for any other apps on the play store?
Lastly, how is the support for accessories? I would like to get a Pebble eventually and I have a few bluetooth stereos. Does the Moto X support most of these without issue?

Im finally upgrading from a htc explorer( while being small i loved how my battery could last me 3 to 4 days easy) i've kept it for 3 years with custom roms and was enough for me up until recently when i had to start using other apps like skype, viber and facebook as a form of communication.
I'm looking for a 300€ or less smartphone that will last me 2 years a least and ended up with two deals that i found to be under the current price market:
a moto x first gen new for 250 or a google nexus 5 new for 289
as i see the nexus is a little bit stronger on paper and probably would get outdated way after the moto x
but the moto x is cheaper and does have a nice set of perks like better battery life, ergonomics and that motorola notification thingy, my only set back was reading about the display getting burned after months of use and the gossip that motorola by now being owned by lenovo would stop getting updates after lollipop or at least as quick
I would appreciate your input on this matter especially if you have both, If i have to read another review on these phone i rather gouge out my eyes
I dont really care about the camera, im more interested in a daily driver that can mutlitask some apps and if possible be up to date in at least a year or 2.

I don't know if I can help, but If I had the choice I think I would have gone with Nexus 5 for the sole purpose of having long lasting developer support. Nexus 6 is too big, but I am tied to Verizon, and went with Moto X 2013 Dev edition for 200 on amazon. I. Love. This. Phone. I don't think I would be happy going to a phone without all the moto apps baked in/moto phone moving forward... *shrugs*
What ever you do, take your needs, and then wants. And then make the choice, Lot's of choices with Nexus 5, Lot's of out of the box awesome with Moto X.:good:
If you want timely updates for the next two years and great long lasting developer support go for the nexus 5.
However the moto x is very unique because the out-of-the-box experience is fantastic, the motorola features are great and battery is good (way better than the nexus 5 if I'm not mistaken). Also, I've read this over and over and experienced it myself : it kind of eliminates the desire for custom roms (because stock is so great). So if you want to tweak the rom just stick xposed with gravitybox on it and you're good to go. All we need to wait for here is xposed compatibility for lollipop and we're set (of course everyone's waiting for the official lollipop update most importantly, but it's bound to happen!).
In my opinion the only downside to the moto x is that it will stop getting updates before the nexus 5. Hopefully we'll still have an active developing community when that happens!
So all in all, the way I see it is that it depends on if you value updates over user experience, or the other way around. If it were my choice I would go for the moto x!
I wouldn't expect another 2 years worth of updates for either device. I'd base my decision on size as long as you're only considering the developer edition Moto X.

Hi, i used for 3 months nexus 5, phone quality is bad, speaker quality is bad, power button rattles...battery bad etc
now i use just for 7 days moto x 2013, all i can say is i am happy with my moto.

I currently own Moto X and used my friend's Nexus 5 quite alot. Let me tell you pro's of both.
Moto X
1 ) Ideal size and display screen.
2) Good build quality and feel.
3) Very good speakers and earpiece.
4) Lag free, very good for day to day tasks
5) Good battery timings.
Nexus 5
1) Much better software support and development.
2) 1080p screen vs Moto X 720p screen.
3) Better hardware.
4) Better video quality with OIS.

Having owned a N5 I would say don't do it!
Honestly there isn't anything much better on the N5. Sure processor and screen quality are spec'd better but they also consume more battery. The N5 has a tiny battery...only 100mA more than the X.
The X has awesome daily usability. The active display is a great way to see ALL your new messages and notifications. The speaker sounds more clear and less tingy than the N5. Earphone output is great when listening to music. The battery lasts all day with 3-5 screen hours.
Also in my experience there are two different LCD panels being used in the N5. My friends screen was more cooler and blue. I unfortunately had a warm panel. But that's a user preference thing.
You can't go wrong with the X. Also after the updates to KitKat. The camera is actually pretty damn good. You have to use the google camera app though.
You can't go wrong with the X. I've had mine for two weeks and don't see myself upgrading until 2016.
I wouldn't even consider the second gen. The dimensions of the first X is beauty in the hands.
My post is allover the place but it is basically praising the X and saying the N5 isn't all that great.

Okay well. Right now i have the oneplus one. Its a great phone and i like it and all... But no android l support yet (no cm12s), my touch screen is going bad, support is eh... and im just wanting to buy something that has been improved over many years... And is reliable. opo is kinda new.. with a single device.
So i thought of the nexus 6. It looks and feels amazing (as i have held/saw one) scores really nice on benchmarks despite the quad hd display.
My opo currently has the bamboo back (swap cover) and its in perfect condition, should be worth a good amount, and i get paid soon. So now i am tempted to buy the nexus 6.
Afew questions.
Firstly, I am all about having fast/latest hardware, so here is where my concern comes in. Is this nexus 6 a first of a soon soc snapdragon 805? Because i remember when the nexus 5 was out, half a year later there was a much better soc snapdragon 801. I know the nexus 6 will be fast, but i am just thinking ahead..
Next, is $700+ (as i would get the 64gb one) worth it?.. Its a HUGE jump from the previous $400 32gb nexus 5.. I thought nexus devices were always going to be cheap.. I mean, a bigger screen, a better build quality and snapdragon 805.. that's about all.
Middle, Will it be worth alot by next year when the next nexus arrives? (for resale purposes)
And lastly, should i just go for the nexus 6? And stay in the nexus line.. Or wait for a snapdragon 810 model phone to release.. As 64bit is arriving this year.
PS: Is metro PCS supported?

Snapdragon 810 is just around the corner, the LG G Flex 2 will be using SD 810. You can have the best hardware possible but if the software is not optimized for it then that hardware is not fully utilized to its fullest potential. In my opinion, get a phone with good development support from the community, not a phone because it has better specifications.
The question of the N6 being "worth it" is subjective and no one can answer that but yourself. You posting a thread in here will attract people say "yeah its worth it, get it ASAP" because you're in Nexus territory but if you're in the OPO territory, they would say no because OPO has a better value. Both phones have its pros and cons, the decision of whether the "N6 is worth it" is not as black and white.
Will it be worth a lot? I don't predict the future, but it most likely will retain a large % of its value. Nexus 5 is still a popular phone and people are still buying them.
Should you go for the N6? I already answered this. I personally was using the OPO and switched to a N6, the OPO community is great but it was no where as good as the Nexus line of devices. Snapdragon 810, don't really care about it unless a Nexus has its name to it.
If development is something you care about when it comes to a phone, a Nexus won't disappoint.

Not going to lie though, the opo is a great value phone where the specifications don't compromise. It's a very hot phone and the development is pretty good as I've owned one. The development is better than some of the other non nexus devices.
Essentially you're paying to have a bigger screen and front facing speakers as well as a number of other features such as turbo charger.
But you're losing, notification led (can be enabled on n6), ips for a amoled, battery life.
Opo battery life is much better than n6 by 1 hour sot in my personal experience. I still prefer the n6, I love the big size phone and I can't see myself using a screen that isn't as wide.
Ultimately, the choice is up to you. My recommendation is go to a t mobile store and play with the demo. Although, the size isn't a problem once you've used the phone for week, you get used to it.

If you can wait for a device that you like (form factor, screen, brand) that has the 810 processor in it, I would wait for that. But if you want a phone this second then the Nexus 6 is a decent choice. With that being said you have a few things to consider.
1)Curved back - For some people this is a deal breaker. Don't ask me why it just is.
2)Large size- At a whopping 5.96" it is large in the average person's hand. I have large hands so this was actually fine for me.
3)Battery life- Because of the screen size the battery life isn't best in class. I will say that it is decent though. You can check threads with users posting their SOT. I on average get about 5.5-6 hours screen on time over the course of a day. (If I ever have time to use it that much.)
But with all those things considered there are a few benefits too, which I'm sure you've heard. When it all comes down to it if you are considering the Nexus 6 the other phone you might want to consider is the Note 4. It is close to the same screen size, same processor, and same battery size. I for one thought the Nexus 6 was the better option because of the Nexus phone support and that it has a bone-stock version of Android. I can't stand Samsung's bloatware.
TL;DR:If you want a phone right now it's a good choice. If you can wait a few months, wait a few months.

There's no point waiting for a few more months, just a couple months later. the Nexus 6 will be even better because the development will be more mature in terms of custom ROMs and kernels.
Going to a phone that is a non-Nexus will have less development and the software will be more bloated with carrier apps and manufacturer skins. Once you go to a Nexus, you stay a Nexus. If a user is wanting something that works outside of the box and doesn't care too much about development then by all means go to a non-Nexus but if you care about custom ROMs and kernels then Nexus devices are the way to go.
I came from a G3 and before that a Note 3
. the Nexus 6 is by far my favorite phone. The development for it is far beyond any other device I have seen, we have kernels, ROMs and everything in between.
The size isn't bad in fact I really like how big it is. It only took a day or two to get used to. Note when I use my wife's Moto X 2014 or S5 its like looking at a iPhone 4. While here may be other devices out there shortly with the SD810 its not going to be as good without devs working on making it better. I had the G3 F460S which had the SD805 and it was much slower than the Nexus with the same processor. LG didn't optimize the chip set well enough to make it worth the upgrade over the regular G3. My antutu score with it was ~46K which is the same as the Moto X that my wife has which is 100% stock. While my G3 was rooted and tweaked with some mods at the time.
The AMOLED display looks great compared to a LCD and its very responsive.
It boils down to preference and I love my Nexus and will buy the next one as well.

Nexus phones aren't the end all be all. Usually they have the most developer support but buying something just because it's a Nexus branded phone sounds an awful lot like those "Fruit" buying fanboys that will buy anything their cult favorite company puts out.

i would also add that battery life is the most subjective issue. it literally depends on how you use the phone. if you're playing games or generally playing around with your phone, your battery life will suck. i use mine as a phone and tool for work and music in the gym and i get 2+ days of use.

If you like to tinker and have the time to spend doing so, the Nexus is the obvious choice. If on the other hand you spend more time doing things, working, recreation, socializing, then another phone will probably suit you better. Unfortunately this was my first Nexus device, and I got it thinking that it would be great to have a phone without all the carrier bloat. After getting it I found that many things I've come to consider standard in a phone, settings, options, etc. are sadly not present and probably will be in time with tinkering and trial and error, but I no longer have the time nor the patience to experiment on a device that I paid a large premium for that just seems to not only be crippled by sloppy software but also with possible hardware inconsistencies. I am lucky that I can jump any time I want and probably will here as soon as more devices come to market. But one thing the Nexus will do for you is help you to appreciate the care that other manufacturers put into their devices to support many features and options that a pure android device does not. So, with that in mind, make your won decision and live with it.
IMO, it's overpriced based on the quality of screen and some parts they used + poor QC.

My options are LG G3 and Nexus 6.
I have been using Moto X until now but the battery in Moto X 2nd Gen seems to be crap and guess i will miss active display and droid is not available in my region

Nexus 6! Best phone I've owned and I came from "the almighty" note 4
For $300 less then the Nexus 6 and Note 4, you can't go wrong with the LG G3.
If you're into rooting your phone and flashing ROMs the LG G3 currently has a thriving development community.
I had a G3 previous to the N6. While the G3 is a great phone, it depends on what you plan on doing with the phone. The N6 is noticeably faster than the G3 for me. The snapdragon 801 just isnt fast enough to properly keep up with the qHD screen. So it lags and stutters some what. Battery life is also better, for me, on the N6. Outdoor visibility was worse for me on the G3, the tests say the G3 is brighter, but the contrast ratio is MUCH worse on the G3, so it just isnt as good outdoors in bright sunlight. Not that the N6 is great outdoors either, but it is better than the G3. The stereo speakers are amazing on the N6. The G3 is plenty loud, but music in stereo pointed at your ears is awesome.
Again, the G3 was/is a great phone, I just like the N6 more.
And lastly, if it matters to you, you are always on the cutting edge of updates with the N6.
What about the battery life? I live and travel alot in the Blackforest, the signal strength is not always great.I am not much of a gamer but i use whatsapp a lot, 2-3 hours of phone and ocassional browsing & Photography.
Plus the Active Display on my Moto X has made me realy lazy . do these phones offer an alternative?
I'm honestly amazed how people ask these questions and expect to get an objective answer. We mostly like the phone, thats why we have it. Asking us whether you should get one is pointless. If you ask the same questionin the G3 forum, you'll most likely get the opposite answers. How does that even help you? Getting the phone based on which thread gets the most responses?
Seriously, we don't know what pros and cons you put into a list when buying a phone. Make yourself a list and make your own decision after watching lots of video reviews of both.

Well i wasnt expecting an Objective answer, i would have included a Poll. I only want personal opinions based on which i would decide which phone to buy

Our personal opinion is 99% going to be buy the nexus 6. That's why we bought the nexus 6. It's not useful to you. What did the G3 owners say?

I currently have the Lg g3 got it in November of 2014, its a awesome phone at 5.5 inch its not to big or to small its perfect, IMHO in comparison, with the nexus 6 there's really not that much to compare. I just purchased a nexuse off swappa, I like a big display and @ 5.9inch that's the perfect size for me, the specs are very similar to one another. If I had to choose again all over I would probably go with the N6. But I'm lucky I have both. Also a plus with both devices is they can be rooted. The G3 bootloader can't be unlocked as of yet but there's a workaround called 'bumped'..you can't go wrong with either one they're both awesome devices. Good luck.

This. It's like going into a university admissions office and asking them "help me choose a school." They're obviously going to tell you their school because they're biased towards it.
In this case, we're biased towards the Nexus 6. No one here would tell you to go for another device because we all personally believe the nexus 6 is the best phone due to our own personal experiences.

I perhaps would try the LG G4. Prior to switching I had the LG G3 and it was a pretty great phone. Considering you only needed root and the exposed framework to do many cool features. Thought that it was a great concept for moving forward with devices. No longer waiting for that special ROM to come. It was truly a no hassle phone.
I'd go with the Sammy S6 edge except it is very small on screen size. But my number one concern with any phone is support for Android Auto, cause when I'm mobile, I am and want to be hands free mobile. But in my humble opinion, the Nexus is much more of a dedicated ROM, Framework, and Governor type phone which requires constant attention and tweaking by the user to get the most out of.
I love my N6 but I wish the camera was faster. The camera on the G4 is the only thing I covet

Yes, I was not at all impressed with the m9. I must admit the s6 did impress me however only 5 inches and no front facing speakers makes me not want it. I must admit I am anxiously waiting for the note 5 and what ever the next Nexus device is going to be at the end of the year. If the next Nexus is smaller than 5.5 inches I will definitely consider the Note 5.

I tend not to buy phones that are 6 months old. If it was 3 months ago, then yes.
There is nothing now that I feel would be any better either though. I'd probably be waiting until Autumn unless I had a desperate requirement
Yes, mostly because root is more and more elusive. There's so much less to worry about with a Nexus device: no need for exploits nor bootloader codes, no worries about bricking, and no lack of dev support.
That said, there are areas I would like to see improvement. Between Google and all the dev support, we don't have to wait long to see and implement them.
Coming from a S4 to this phone is like night and day. Boot loader, root, general flashing all much easier with a great forum to provide support.... whats not to love?? If none of those things matter to you then any phone would do but if you like to live a little on the edge and try new stuff.... this type of phone is a good choice.
Yes. Tired of waiting for ROMs and bootloader hacks and root access for other phones. Google gives you access to everything right out the box.
I would buy my Nexus 6 today in a heartbeat. Even though it's now an "older" device, there are many points that I love and haven't really seen in other devices. Top 5 reasons:
1. Aftermarket/community support
2. Build materials and quality (I like the plastic back with the metal frame. Might not be as "pretty" but the back is less likely to show abrasions and won't dent)
3. Lollipop/"Pure" Android (no bloat, cutting-edge software, timely updates)
4. The amazing hardware package (although we all agree the camera could be better on a device in this class)
a. awesome processors
b. lots o' RAM
c. fantastic radios (cell, GPS, BT, WiFi)
d. wonderful front stereo speakers
e. dat screen, doh
f. etc...
5. Size and shape
As others have said, I cannot go without an rooted and unlocked device. My heart would sink if i had an unmodable phone. The dev and community support is great. Other phones may have nice features here and there or higher benchmarks but if it cannot rooted and unlocked I'll pass. The manufacturers may have a their own idea of how a phone should be setup, but I don't prefer it. I want to tweak it to my liking, especially since this is primarily what in use to communicate with the world.
Just as in the plethora of ROMs available here: some are stock+ while others have a ton of features. I, fortunately, have the ability to choose which user-interface best pleases my needs.
If all phones were unlocked and rootable I would have to rethink my answer.

At the store they gave me a replacement with the same display issue (pink tint on bottom 1/3 of the display, very noticable next to the display model). Looked at the g flex 2 and m9 and decided I wanted to go with this. I had been saying I was gonna get a nexus anyway but the s6's hardware was very appealing. I am not disappointed with my decision at all. I did think the battery life would be a little better on this and it does get uncomfortably toasty at times but I do love this phone.
Definitely would buy again.
1) Unlockable bootloader with so little hassle
2) Dev community
At the same time I have been putting up with a slow camera ;(

Check out the disabling services thread in general http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/disabling-google-play-services-guide-t2999821/page22 post 220 talks about disabling receivers, it refers to the google play update receivers they start with system.update. I disabled those 3 and battery life has been pretty good (along with other stuff I don't use... Fit, Kids, and such). Of course you need to be rooted to do this, I am using My Android Tools (I got the paid version but there is also a free version I think) to disable stuff. Just pay close attention to the thread and don't try to experiment.... at a minimum, you will want to have a nandroid backup before you start just incase you disable something by mistake.
in tech, its all about timing. there are 810 phones i can get today.. though i think i might be happier with the 805 than the 810, but the chips in the s6 look pretty good... i might even wait for the 6s-plus to come out if i were shopping today (if the 6 plus had 2 gigs of ram i would have gotten a 6 plus)... the phone i wanted more than anything was the droid turbo when deciding (was between nexus 6, moto x, m8 and droid turbo... so lots of moto). after seeing all the development for the nexus, i dont think i would go to another phone... but an lg nexus with ips display might be nice (dont need 4k, 1080 is fine... want a 4200 mAh battery).
and i have a feeling we are still unlocking new potential with the phone, porting moto features, getting cm implementation ironed out... lollipop is still in growing pains...
I just bought mine a couple weeks ago so I'd say yes. I was just tired of lack of root and delayed updates on the Note 4.
