Hi
I plan to purchase a chrome cast device and compatible router for development purposes. I have a few doubt's on which I could welcome some pointers.
1. I have a viewsonic 2753mh led 27 inch monitor with hdcp capability and two HDMI ports with speakers built into monitor. Will chrome cast work on this ?
2. I am planning to buy a compatible router for the setup as well. My choices are linksys e900 and netgear wnr2000. Which one of these would you recommend.
PS : I am in India so if any additional notes must follow, please let me know.
I am planning to buy in a day or two so early responses are thanked for in advance. Please guide me.
Hi there.
1. It will work.
2. The Linksys has more security features and it's cheaper. I think it's a no brainer.
I'm from Argentina and already tried several TVs and networks. I don't think you'll have any problems

Thank you very much. That was much more of a help than any of the toll free numbers I Tried today. Could you clarify the last point once more.
So amount netgear wnr2000 and linksys e900 which one will be better. For me amount these price is not a concern. Smooth operation of chromecast and wifi is all that I need.
Price is as such:
Linksys e900 rs 2300

On Linksys I advise getting a EA4500 or 6500...
6500 can have as high as 1300 Mbps, 4500 and 3500 top out at 450Mbps
The other cheaper routers all top out at 300 Mbps.
You want the higher Mbps to stream content to the CCast without affecting other services much.
But mostly what you are looking for in a router is all in the Configuration pages...Cheap routers without a good admin section are prone to not having the ability to change the settings needed for CCast (and other things as well).
I have a Linksys 4500 and I couldn't be happier!
If the 6500 was available at the time I purchased I would have gotten one of those.
I can't speak to the Netgear since I have never used one...
I will need a 300mbps router only. We don't have any of the services offered on chromecast here such as netflix etc.
My max usage of a video steam is 1 mbps and I am the only.user who.will be using it. So i have to select from those two.
Want do you feel about Asus N12 router ?

You don't need the high Mbps for Netflix as that never streams faster than your internet connection....(Unless you have a very fast Internet connection)
You need it for Wireless streaming and transfer locally which without Netflix is probably what you are going to be doing most of the time.
The biggest issue with CCast is getting the throughput needed to stream high bitrate files to the device over wireless.
Now the extra throughput of those routers exist on the 5Ghz side but that leaves the entirety of the 2.4 Ghz band open for CCast usage without affecting any other devices on the network that connect via 5Ghz.
Sorry to hijack the thread. I currently have a netgear wgr614 router which I bought about 6 years ago. While Netflix for the most part works ok, I have been having a problem with high bit rate torrents constantly buffering/pausing. Would upgrading my router to a linksys ea6500 help? I'm not too tech savvy so appreciate any help.

Can't say for certain....
Depends on where the choke is...
Could be the ISP, Could be the router (if you are connected Wireless, You should only do torrenting via Wire IMO)

Basically, my home pc sucks. Everything is done via my nexus 7 tablet. I've followed Google protocol regarding CC: proper codec, 4000mbps or under etc. While I would love to bump it up, I know I can't so I don't. However I even have problems streaming with Google play movies app. That's when I had enough. I figured I'd ask advice before I upgrade. Even though I can swing it, so I probably will anyway. ?

So coming back to my question if I just need a 300mbps category router, one from the ones mentioned in Chromecast compatibility list. Which one should I go for Linksys e900 or netgear wnr2000 or Asus rt n12. Mt connection maxes as 3 Mbps thus I don't btoehr for 1000 mbps / dual band etc for now.. Also i read on goofle forums dual band routers and 5ghz arent a friendly choice for chromecast.
So please guide me.

Check the ping latency in your router. Ping your router and ping your ISP gateway and observe.

Your mixing up and mashing together your Local Speeds and WAN speeds...
Really doesn't matter what your internet speed is the speeds I'm talking about are all LOCAL LAN speeds over WiFi.
You can get either model you have there it really doesn't matter but I wouldn't suggest trying to stream any high bitrate video to the CCast and also expect another device to get web pages without waiting.
That 300Mbps is the max the router can transfer AT ONCE over WiFi to EVERY DEVICE.
If 1 Device you get 300Mbps
If 2 Devices you only get about 150Mbps for each when both are pulling data...Etc...etc...
And no there are no issues with 5Ghz routers using CCast...
Just some bad models who don't have a decent or limited firmware.
I say go the Linksys because I know their firmware has everything you need for the CCast to work without even changing default settings.
If you want to stick with the cheaper router thats your choice but the difference in cost is worth it for the better throughput if you ask me.

I personally prefer Linksys...Never had a problem with them and never had an issue where a feature I needed was missing.
I suggest you just get the best router you can afford but check to make sure that Tomato Router firmware is available for it.
If it is it really doesn't matter how bad the firmware the device comes with is as you can flash your own and get all the settings you could want.

In that case i am going with Linksys E900 Wireless-N300 Router for now. Seems adequate for my usage and also supports tomato i suppose. The only issue is 1 year warranty and i cant find detailed instructions for setting up this with chrome cast, but i guess that will come later. Perhaps i will just get back to this thread after i have purchased the devices.
Sorry if i am a bother but i really appreciate your help.

Not a problem...Setting up the router is pretty easy with Linksys they provide an easy disk that walks you through it...
Setting up the CCast is even easier...Just install the CCast setup app on your device and pick the router SSID (name you gave the router) and enter the password.
Linksys default setting work for CCast right out of the box.
rajdeeprath you need to understand Asphyx's comment. Chromecast needs bandwidth to stream from your PC to the device. For eg. if you're streaming a 720p movie to your chromecast from your PC then it will use all available bandwidth. In the case of the E900 the max possible is 300 mbps which is some cases will not suffice.
This is not the bandwidth being provided by your service provider Airtel/ BSNL etc. which offer speeds of 4 mbps/ 15 mbps etc.
I have a Linksys E900 running DDwrt and have a lot of issue viewing movies on both, chromecast as well as a jailbroken ATV2. I am using Airparrot to airplay to ATV2.
It makes sense to purchase a router with 1300 mbps max speed.
Asphyx - Question for you. Airplay works fine from my iPhone/ IPad but does not work well on my PC using Airparrot - any ideas on what settings I can tweak to improve performance?
Also, am planning on adding a gigabit router as a slave to support my streaming needs.

Not all that familiar with the Airplay or it's settings....What I can find via search seems to suggest iTunes is being used on Airplay to stream (Is that true?)
You say the Apple products work fine but PC has issues. Is this a desktop PC? What kind of WiFi Card? USB or PC Card?
USB is fine for Laptops but don't use USB dongles on Desktops as they are prone to get interference from the RF radiating from a Desktop PC, Get one that is a PCI Card with External antenna. You can even find replacement antenna to get some distance away from any RF that might slow down or interfere with the WiFi.
I doubt highly that there is a setting wrong to make it flake out for a PC. But there maybe something to run on your PC that makes it an Airplay destination...
see here http://lifehacker.com/5802958/how-to-make-your-entire-home-airplay-compatible
What I do suggest though is if you do get the Gigabit router, Make it the main router and use the Airplay as a range extender only.
Will require wiring the Airplay to the new router but will make for a better experience all around.

Hi, thank you for the info and i will definitely consider it. I am just getting started on chromecast so i dont want to go that way yet. After i see it working well and my requirements go up i will buy a high end router.
Also i dont have any need to stream a 720P video from my pc or laptop to chromecast. Most of my development needs are external network based. In my understanding a 720P video deliverable on web can be well encoded in less than 1mbps. People encoding video for web > 20-30 mbps are probably have very specific uses..
That said, i understand your point and i have reservations made to handle that in near future thanks!
Chrome cast and new router purchased and ready to setup.

Ok so I'm moving to another place by myself and need to buy a router. The internet averages about 7-10mb/s here. My question..is there any reason to go with anything over a 150mb/s rated wireless router? Like say a netgear n150? I play ps3 online..watch "videos" etc...mainly does the fact that my internet connection is far less than what the router is rated at matter?

only benefit you'd have from the 150mb/s would be if you had one or more wifi N lappy(s) and wanted to transfer files

Lol
I have the netgear n and its very good.. although if you want better speeds you've got to have a WiFi n card
[Sig] dId you know? If you Insert a Coin on your Desire, then it levels up to HD, Z or S :[/Sig] !!!! 10 post limit for off topic NOW!!!!
I would go for a wireless-n router
So 150 or 300mb
Because of longer range, faster speeds when you want to transfer files..
And it is not so expensive anymore

Just use any normal router. Remember to set up WPA2 (who am I kidding, everybody loves WPA2 except Husam) for security.
Use a physical wire for connecting your home server to the router instead of going full wireless (total regret for me).
I'm not entirely sure what I might have messed up, but...
Got my new galaxy note via amazon.com today, and as any good xda reader, it was rooted within 10 minutes of charging the battery. Installed CheckROM v5 along with CF-Root (both LA4) and everything seems to be working.
Well, ALMOST everything. For some reason, the wifi radio isn't seeing my 802.11a (5GHz) wifi AP. I've verified that the SSID is being broadcast, and that the SSID is seen on my samsung galaxy SII. Nothing on the Note..
Installed "wifi analyzer", and it won't even give me an option for 5GHz (as if there's no 802.11a support on the device.)
I went into the Wlantest mode and it shows options for testing the 5GHz radio, and no strange errors come up when I run those tests.
Any suggestions? Am I missing something here?
It's pretty important to me that I'm able to access some 802.11a AP's, so I'd like to figure out what's going on (or put a stock ROM back on and get amazon to give me an exchange.)
Thanks
Gary

i have the opposite. my note connects to my netgear dgnd3700's 5ghz easily enough. but im running stock 2.3.6 rom (polish plus model), so maybe its something with your rom?
My Note does not see 5ghz on my home Netgear router but does see it at my work's Netgear routers (diff models). I too would like to know more about this.
I'm not going to mess with this - calling up amazon to have them send me a replacement. (done.) If I get two in a row with 5GHz not working, I suppose it'd be possible that the 5GHz hardware is simply disabled for the region they are importing phones from (Brazil? Original firmware is UBKK1)
If that's the case, I guess I'll be returning and ordering from elsewhere.
Take care
Gary
I've just installed a new Netgear WNDR4500, and my Note is able to connect with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz as well!
Maybe. Although it happened on my stock kka Rom and is still the same now that I'm on stock la4 so I am not quite sure that its Rom specific.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
Strange... The replacement came in, and it's ALSO missing 5GHz. Looks like a Brazil firmware (UBKK1.)
I've never seen anything like this... I wonder if Amazon knows that the imports they are selling are crippled.
UPDATE:
Found the problem.. Phone comes with a Brazil firmware, so I guess I should set my 802.11a channels to be in the spectrum allowable in Brazil, right?
Doing that, it works. On both the original and replacement phone. I feel stupid now.

Live streaming what?
Odds are if you can get your live stream in a Chrome Tab it will cast to the Chromecast(though with reduced video quality). The chromecast itself will only work with listed approved apps at the moment so odds are that without a chrome tab you will not get it tow work.

I live in the UK, so I would use it for Sky Go, Virgin TV Anywhere, and even live football streams. Would it be worth getting then?
Chrome tab casting relies on the computer to transcode what's displayed on the tab to a Chromecast-friendly format and send it over. It requires a reasonable amount of CPU horsepower for video, because the CPU is not only decompressing the Internet stream for display, it's then recompressing that to send to the Chromecast - all in real-time.
Personally I would look more toward a wireless HDMI solution that would let you connect your computer "directly" to your TV wirelessly. Of course that'll cost significantly more than Chromecast.

If it isn't something you need to do right now I'd wait until after the Dec 7/8 Google Chromecast Hackathon to see what they say about Chromecast in other countries and providers.
Unless of course there's some irresistable Black Friday or Cyber Monday deal on an HDMI transmitter...

Interesting... The other option is a small form-factor (SFF) PC. I have an Acer Aspire Revo R3700 as my HTPC for playing DVDs and BDs... It'll barely keep up for Flash stuff, but I do use my Chromecast a lot for HBO Go and the convenience of queuing YouTube from the couch.
I'm sure some of the UK TV providers will get on board, but they're probably waiting to see how Chromecast does over here in the states, err, colonies.
So here's what's what. I don't have cable at my house. Never needed it, got everything from streaming. Well, Comcast in their infinite wisdom and lack of innovation has now implemented a 300 GB cap, in addition to throttling. Between myself and a few roommates, ain't no way in Hell we're staying under that.
I used to use Netflix, but I've been turned on to Showbox. Now, I can't use a traditional DLNA solution because of the cap. So, using my phone tethering, I can get everything on the same network. Basically, how can I stream a stream?
TL;DR Comcast sucks. How can I stream a stream without Chromecast?

Hi,
I have a Chromecast and will be buying a router soon. I was wondering if Netgear JWNR2010 N300 Wireless Router is compatible with chromecast. This seems to be a good router to buy so wanted to know if this would go with the Chromecast I have.
If not are there any suggestions under the range of Rs.1600/- INR ?

Both the 2000 and the 2000v3 are compatible so It's probably safe to say the 2010 is as well.
Their N600 and N900 are also compatible according to Google....

Me personally I like the Linksys/Cisco routers the best.

Got the list in which this router is listed. Thanks
Since you're in India, you might want to check out which routers are capable of blocking or redirecting Google DNS in case that's necessary for you to access content not available in India.
I discovered the fun way that you may need to manually set the router's channel at, like, 1 or 5 to get the chromecast to connect if it's password protected. Or, potentially password free as well.

Some routers have an option to isolate clients from each other. This should be a problem, if activated. My routers included a Linksys 4000 something and an Iphone4s. IOS8 removed communication between the max two clients(and no one has noticed, except me), so it may work no more.
And there may be initial setup difficulties, if your phone uses 5ghz wifi, so better use 2.4ghz until the CC setup is completed. And, unlike many devices, CC supports wifi channels up to 13 or 14(in Japan). So no need to bother here.
Thanks everyone for helping me
