I have been hyped for this phone since I heard about it and ive been extremely tempted to get rid of my nexus 4 and grab this phone, the camera issues seem to be over exagerated from what i can see and some say that the nexus cam is bad and I thought it was okay. Any thoughts from anyone using this phone coming from the nexus 4? The main draw for me is battery life, Im lucky if I can get 15 hours of battery life total, with maybe 1-2 hours of screen on time..
If you're OK with the nexus 4 and its lack of LTE, stick with that. This camera has been frustrating me with its lack of exposure control/focus. I'd wait to see how they're going to improve the camera before ditching the N4. If had both and I think the only reason the Moto X wins is Verizon's LTE coverage.

I never had the Nexus 4, and I'm certainly no camera junkie, but I love this phone. I came from the Galaxy Nexus, so any phone is an upgrade, really. I was happy with the gnex camera, and I'm even more happy with the Moto X camera.
Get the Moto x and never look back. My n4 is now an mp3 player. Moto x battery life is insane and the phone is much smoother than the n4.

I haven't yet decided whether I should go for the Moto X or wait for the next Nexus and see what's coming up.

Im very much leaning towards getting one on sprint tomorrow if best buy is going to pricematch amazon when I go to get rid of my old iphone tomorrow. I just have one last question, does the moto x have a notification LED or is it purely done with the active notifications?

I haven't been getting that at all. Yesterday I was at 13 hours on battery 2 hours of screen time with 3% left. It is almost exactly the same as my Nexus 4. I don't play games or watch videos either, pretty much just texting, hangouts, whatsapp, Reddit.
I had to go pick one up today, So far I think this thing is amazing, I love the feel of it and I actually like the vibration on it. If this battery is as good as everyone says ill be thrilled.
I'm a n4 owner thinking of going to moto x too, for the battery life and better optimization and amoled screen non pentile.
Just pulled the trigger on eBay for 495.00 with a case and protector. The moto website kept placing holds on my credit card but not putting the purchase through so I gave up on Motorola selling it to me. My n4 is going to the wife and she is a happy camper to be switching from her nexus s. Looking forward to checking out this device soon

But lately to me, long battery life has become my #1 most wanted feature. I hammer on my phone all day during the work week, and none of the Nexus phones last me a full day with my kind of use, and I do install custom ROM's with battery friendly kernels, etc.. still doesn't help.
My Nexus 4 I get around 4h On Screen Time, but only total usage of around 10h - 11h out of the battery before the phone is dead. So that sucks for me, unplug at 6:30am, and by 4:30pm it's pretty much done. My Galaxy Nexus was far worse than that, the G Nex blew on battery.
I use my phone, as an actual phone, go figure I can't understand people that rarely do phone calls, how can't you be on the phone anymore ? For running my business and dealing with clients, approx 2 hours of phone calls per day. GPS Navigation used every day, for at least one hour. Text like crazy all day. Read and send e-mails all day. Surf the web.
Only phone that could handle my type of use was the Note 2. That thing could be hammered hard on a workday and still be going until bedtime with juice still left. No other phone I owned could do that. But the Note was too large for my tastes, hard to one hand use.
Saying all of that, I need the Nexus 5 with the rumored option for 3,000mAh + 32GB storage. But now it sounds like that rumor has been squashed. So I might get the G2 instead, and run a ported Nexus 5 ROM down the road.

I have a note1, running official 4.12 with a different kernel. Battery isn't bad, but I usually never let it get below 50% without at least tapping it a little bit during the day.
Perhaps part of the reason (if it holds true, these aren't official specs) of the smaller battery is maybe 4.4 is a little less power
hungry, or the SOC inside the device, the memory etc, consume less power?
Of course! I'm all set with multiple cheap battery banks strategically placed at work, in the car, and in my briefcase for those times I need the battery boost.

I agree with you 200%.
I currently have a GS3 with a 3,000mAh Samsung extended battery and I can do the all day. I was not able to do with 2100 stock.
If 2300 will be confirmed and if they'll not be able two do some crazy optimisation, I'll get a G2 or Z1. My concern is that AOSP on these two devices is zero at the moment.
As 64gb is out of discussion as well as sd card espansion, USB OTG will be very important as 32GB are not enough for me!

Agree on the way a phone should be used and my usage pattern is similar to yours. I can hardly get through a day on a single charge and I would be out of juice by 6-7pm. However, battery life is no concern to me (and many others) at all. I mean, how far are you from an outlet at all times? I have a charger in the office, in my car, in my briefcase and on several strategic locations at home. We switch phones pretty much on an annual basis. The battery won't die in one year regardless of your abuse. So charge your phone whenever you can and ask for smaller batteries for a smaller lighter phones. Also from what I have seen for G2 battery life, at 2300mah the N5 might have enough juice for you and I to go through a day on a single charge.

I am more sad, because the N5 is based off the G2, which has a 3,000mAh battery stock. Of all things to cut back on, and not keep the same between the two phones, don't let it be the battery.
What is Googles reasoning behind changing the battery from the G2 in the Nexus 5 ?
Oh well, looks like G2 here I come. And development will pick up big on that phone. Its only been out a few weeks, and the international G2 just came out last week.
Let's see a Nexus 5 ROM posted on the G2, since they are so similar.

N5 is over and inch narrower and and nearly 3 inches shorter. Maybe it has to do with lack of real estate. Besides if we deduct from G2 we should expect 7.5-8h sot.:fingers-crossed:

CM and AOKP ROM's are pretty quick to release new builds, based off the latest Android release. Its not a 4 month wait, maybe 4 weeks worse case.
The G2 is unlocked on T-Mobile, and International version. The ATT version has an exploit out, and said to be easy to root and the work around hasn't stopped custom ROM development.

I just hope that if the battery is this size, that it will at least be able to take a 2.1 amp charge.
It won't affect my decision at all. The battery life on my N4 lasts the entire day on a full charge with moderate on-screen usage, plus I'd rather them sacrifice battery life and megapixels in order to have a quad core beast with a 1080p HD display for the low price of $299.
I'll be buying the Nexus 5 day one, can't wait!
I would buy it even if the battery was the same as the N4. All these battery nerds are getting way too worried about a phone they haven't even used yet. I guarantee that we will not care if you cry about the 2300 battery, have fun in the N4 forum, we will be here, the future.

The future is technically A57/53, 64bit, U-HD, etc...But sure, let's call N5 the "future". If I wanted future I probably would bet on the faster A7x chip. Sadly androids can't use it too...

No. 2300mah will not stop me.
According to anandtech the lg g2 gets 7.9 hrs of battery life on lte web browsing. If you just reduce this proportionally the nexus 5 could get 6 hrs web browsing on LTE which is like double what my gnex gets.
Some people clearly spend every waking minute doing everything they can think of on their phone. The Nexus 5 probably won't work for those people but I expect it to be competitive with the last batch of mainstream flagships, aka the HTC one and galaxy s4. I think Google wanted a thin phone and just like the nexus 7 2013 they reduced the battery size to achieve this goal but only up to the point where battery life would be acceptable for like 90% of users.

Its your own decision. I came from a gs4. Other then the camera I love this phone. I was always trying to get my gs4 on a custom stock android rom but with the BL being locked I could only get look alikes with multiple FC's. Decided to get rid of it and from all the android top sites. (Phandroid, droid life etc) they have named the moto x #1 top android phone of 2013.

Can't call it an upgrade. The Nexus 5 is faster, better camera, 1080p screen, it have a lot more custom rom devs working on. You'll want to make sure you won't miss these things.
I get pretty good battery life with the Moto X, over 5hours of screen on time for light to medium use. I wouldn't call Moto X build quality great either, but I do like it a little more than LG.

I actually had the Moto X, gave it to my wife and got myself the nexus 5... now I have returned the Nexus 5 and got myself a developer edition Moto X.
I didnt like the size, feel, battery life or display on the nexus 5. The moto x, spec wars aside, is an amazing phone. The feel in your hand, the additions to android are useful but pretty close to stock.
I don't regret the switch one bit.

Yes, I think you quoted the wrong guy. I have the X, and I can't say it's amazing (I can't say that about any phone, because I'm not an easily impressed person), but I can say that's it really nice, and I don't regret getting it; i like it more and more very day. This means a lot to me.

It looks like it would be extremely difficult to fit the qi receiver inside the moto X wood case... a shame. Good luck putting the qi receiver in your case though!

This one. Just received it. I haven't test it much, but it work, the lightning bolt charging indicator doesn't show up, but it does charge, albeit slower charging than with wires. I just hide it inside the TPU case, but it does coverup the M logo of the phone.
update: been charging it a bit, the receiver is rated at 500mA. It can charge the phone 10% in maybe 25min. Base on this result, it'll probably take 4hours to full charge the phone. :/

Ah.. cool but ehh.. I do have a tpu case so should be fine but my cheap qi charger seemed like it took that long too.. on my n4 which officially had wireless charging.. I don't use it often enough for it to be worth it.
I came from an HTC one. I have only had this phone for two days but I am extremely impressed and happy with my decision. The call quality in terms of loudness is unmatched as well as speaker output. It's scares the crap out of my when my phone rings. I actually prefer the screen color even though it is 720p compared to my one. Blacks are black and most colors are true to their color more than looking washed out. The ergonomics are fantastic. It doesn't feel cheap even with the build quality of the one. It is easier and more comfortable to hold. Active display and volume of the speaker is the main reason why I chose this over the nexus 5. I am happy I did.

I came from the nexus 5. Primary thing you lose is the dev community, but other than that the Moto x tops the nexus everywhere else in terms of everyday use. Depends on your priorities really.

Yeah well CyanogenMod nightly is officially released for it now. I tried it a bit which is very fast, but promptly flashed back stock due to missing Motorola features. I know AOKP rom have Active Display which is pretty good, but I still need Touchless Control, current alternatives aren't good enough for me and they'll drain more battery since they don't utilize the low powered core.

I had a Gnex, then the GS4, then I decided to get the N5 on day one of it's release. I returned it after three days of usage mainly because of the horrible battery life and very uncomfortable grip. I went back to the S4 until I saw the valentines day Motorola promo. I got a fully customized moto x with ebony wood back. ? I loved the size of my Gnex but I decided to skip the moto x when it first released. What a big mistake! This phone is very smooth and snappy, very comfortable to hold, and it has very useful features. I feel like THIS is the Nexus 5.

I am extremely happy with my Verizon Dev edition. Build quality is A+ quality on this. Excellent fit and finish. The software is also excellent. I had a galaxy nexus before this phone and this phone is just so much better. Battery life on Verizon is excellent.

Im finally upgrading from a htc explorer( while being small i loved how my battery could last me 3 to 4 days easy) i've kept it for 3 years with custom roms and was enough for me up until recently when i had to start using other apps like skype, viber and facebook as a form of communication.
I'm looking for a 300€ or less smartphone that will last me 2 years a least and ended up with two deals that i found to be under the current price market:
a moto x first gen new for 250 or a google nexus 5 new for 289
as i see the nexus is a little bit stronger on paper and probably would get outdated way after the moto x
but the moto x is cheaper and does have a nice set of perks like better battery life, ergonomics and that motorola notification thingy, my only set back was reading about the display getting burned after months of use and the gossip that motorola by now being owned by lenovo would stop getting updates after lollipop or at least as quick
I would appreciate your input on this matter especially if you have both, If i have to read another review on these phone i rather gouge out my eyes

I don't know if I can help, but If I had the choice I think I would have gone with Nexus 5 for the sole purpose of having long lasting developer support. Nexus 6 is too big, but I am tied to Verizon, and went with Moto X 2013 Dev edition for 200 on amazon. I. Love. This. Phone. I don't think I would be happy going to a phone without all the moto apps baked in/moto phone moving forward... *shrugs*
What ever you do, take your needs, and then wants. And then make the choice, Lot's of choices with Nexus 5, Lot's of out of the box awesome with Moto X.:good:
If you want timely updates for the next two years and great long lasting developer support go for the nexus 5.
However the moto x is very unique because the out-of-the-box experience is fantastic, the motorola features are great and battery is good (way better than the nexus 5 if I'm not mistaken). Also, I've read this over and over and experienced it myself : it kind of eliminates the desire for custom roms (because stock is so great). So if you want to tweak the rom just stick xposed with gravitybox on it and you're good to go. All we need to wait for here is xposed compatibility for lollipop and we're set (of course everyone's waiting for the official lollipop update most importantly, but it's bound to happen!).
In my opinion the only downside to the moto x is that it will stop getting updates before the nexus 5. Hopefully we'll still have an active developing community when that happens!
So all in all, the way I see it is that it depends on if you value updates over user experience, or the other way around. If it were my choice I would go for the moto x!
I wouldn't expect another 2 years worth of updates for either device. I'd base my decision on size as long as you're only considering the developer edition Moto X.

I'm looking for a 300€ or less smartphone that will last me 2 years a least and ended up with two deals that i found to be under the current price market:
a moto x first gen new for 250 or a google nexus 5 new for 289
as i see the nexus is a little bit stronger on paper and probably would get outdated way after the moto x
but the moto x is cheaper and does have a nice set of perks like better battery life, ergonomics and that motorola notification thingy, my only set back was reading about the display getting burned after months of use and the gossip that motorola by now being owned by lenovo would stop getting updates after lollipop or at least as quick
I would appreciate your input on this matter especially if you have both, If i have to read another review on these phone i rather gouge out my eyes
I dont really care about the camera, im more interested in a daily driver that can mutlitask some apps and if possible be up to date in at least a year or 2.

Hi, i used for 3 months nexus 5, phone quality is bad, speaker quality is bad, power button rattles...battery bad etc
now i use just for 7 days moto x 2013, all i can say is i am happy with my moto.

I currently own Moto X and used my friend's Nexus 5 quite alot. Let me tell you pro's of both.
Moto X
1 ) Ideal size and display screen.
2) Good build quality and feel.
3) Very good speakers and earpiece.
4) Lag free, very good for day to day tasks
5) Good battery timings.
Nexus 5
1) Much better software support and development.
2) 1080p screen vs Moto X 720p screen.
3) Better hardware.
4) Better video quality with OIS.

Having owned a N5 I would say don't do it!
Honestly there isn't anything much better on the N5. Sure processor and screen quality are spec'd better but they also consume more battery. The N5 has a tiny battery...only 100mA more than the X.
The X has awesome daily usability. The active display is a great way to see ALL your new messages and notifications. The speaker sounds more clear and less tingy than the N5. Earphone output is great when listening to music. The battery lasts all day with 3-5 screen hours.
Also in my experience there are two different LCD panels being used in the N5. My friends screen was more cooler and blue. I unfortunately had a warm panel. But that's a user preference thing.
You can't go wrong with the X. Also after the updates to KitKat. The camera is actually pretty damn good. You have to use the google camera app though.
You can't go wrong with the X. I've had mine for two weeks and don't see myself upgrading until 2016.
I wouldn't even consider the second gen. The dimensions of the first X is beauty in the hands.
My post is allover the place but it is basically praising the X and saying the N5 isn't all that great.

I currently have a OnePlus One, rooted and running CM12.0. This phone has excellent battery life, and is very fast.
But I bought a Nexus 6 for my Wife her birthday last month, and rooted it running Chroma ROM, and the phone is really nice too, and I like the larger size, and really like the AMOLED screen much better, and speakers too, over my OPO. My Wife gives two craps which phone she uses, and she actually would prefer a little smaller device. So I can swap phones with her, and she'd be happy.
Question is, I haven't used her Nexus 6 for a full day ever, I just tinker around with it for an hour or two here and there. But how does it hold up for a full days use ? I know the OPO is known as one of the top battery Android phones out there, and I read the Nexus 6 is not that great on battery life ? ( My wife comes home with 50% to 60% still left on her phone after a full days work, but she barely touches it, maybe 2.5h - 3h On Screen time per day )
So has anyone here had the OnePlus One, and switched to the Nexus 6 ? Opinions ?

I came from the OPO to the N6 and I'll be honest, I like the OPO in pure head-head comparison. The two are very very similar and my personal margin between the two is razor thin. I like the OPO battery life, and the customization options of CM. The size, weight, and feel in the hand is P E R F E C T. As a matter of fact I pulled it out last night to prepare it for a relative to borrow, and it's just right to me. The N6 screen is better, and it works on VZW which trounces the other networks. VZW is such a better experience for me and that was really the only factor that makes me use my N6.
The OPO may be a pain to obtain and their customer service might be garbage, but the OPO is a device that is waaaaay underrated when it comes to day-to-day living. I'd say it's the best phone I've ever used even edging out my beloved gen 1 Moto X. If it worked on VZW I'd be rocking it right now, no doubt.

You need to provide a battery log using better battery stats. You have a rogue app that is preventing your phone from entering sleep mode.
Several things you can do increase battery life such as underclock gpu and cpu then make a profile to ramp up your cpu and gpu based on certain applications (by using Franco kernel updater).
Battery life is also determined by your cellular strength and signal. If the signal is bad, it will drain more battery life than usual. Make refresh intervals for certain apps longer than what it is already. If you're using weather on status bar, make the refresh interval 6 hours or something that is longer than what it is already.
Just do a search on how to improve your battery life.

Don't get me wrong. The Nexus is a total BEAST, but outside of the specs I just found the OPO to be a better device. I don't play games so total horsepower isn't a big deal. On a screen 6" and under I don't see a difference between 1080p, 720p, or 4K video. You can tell the difference in screen DPIs. The colors are vibrant and deep on the Nexus 6. The OPO sometimes stutters with 1080p video. The OPO still doesn't have 5.1. The OPO CM12S camera app is worlds better than the stock Google camera app.
But even with all of that between them, if someone had an OPO who was happy with their carrier and asked me if they should buy an N6 I'd have to say hold what you've got for one more phone cycle. I guess the best way to explain it is, if you have an OPO you definitely shouldn't feel like you're "missing out" when it comes to devices. It's not that the Nexus 6 is bad, it's that the OPO is so good at maximizing what it has.

I switched from the OPO to the N6 about three months ago. While the OPO was a fine device, it can't hold a candle to the N6 IMHO. Battery life (similar usage and apps installed) is a little better on the N6 for me. FWIW; stock rooted, unencrypted kernel.

I have to agree with you. Got the Nexus 6 this weekend, and immediately flashed Chroma ROM, and now on my second day with this beast, and I LOVE it. Size wise, it doesn't feel substantially larger than my OnePlus, but quality wise it does feel night and day better. The display is so much nicer, with the deep AMOLED features, and just overall this phone feels tighter and better built.
Which kernel are you running ?
I was all signing the OnePlus One's praises, calling it my fav Android phone, etc... but after two days with this Nexus 6, no way. Yes for the price of $350 of course the OPO is great, but other than that, the Nexus 6 just seems tons better.

The screen was a huge upgrade. I always thought the OnePlus had a nice good screen, but after the Nexus 6, the OPO display looks bluish and washed out, and poor quality in comparison.
The AMOLED display on the Nexus 6 looks so vibrant and great colors. I much prefer this.
And size wise it's not that big a difference. If you can handle the OnePlus size the Nexus 6 just feels a bit bigger.

Thought I would throw my comments in; I had a OPO and honestly loved it. Battery was the best I've ever had and CM was excellent. I had no issues with it, but I've been a Nexus junky for years and had to at least give it a shot. When I got my N6 I used it for 2 days and was going to return it, I even had a return from ATT. But I waited a week and have not turned on the OPO since. Once I found the right rom/kernel, Benzo and Vindicator, battery is on par with the OPO. The features of the rom are a bit better and the size and screen are just right for me. It was a tough choice, but in the end my son has my OPO and I have my N6.
I personally feel if I'm on XDA and I've not unlocked and rooted and tried a few roms and kernels, I'm not using the insane resources available here for free! Do a nandroid of stock and then try all the roms/kernels and see what you like. It takes 5 minutes to restore to where you were.
