My wife's Moto X has an annoying quirk where any time an app that uses "media" volume is running (even in the background), it's impossible to change the ringtone volume without going into the audio settings. The volume buttons on the phone pull up only the media volume control. On my HTC One M7, there is an option to have an expandable pop-up volume control so that even when I am playing music or whatever, I can still hit the volume button, expand the controls, and adjust the ringtone volume. There's even a check box to combine ringtone and notification volumes.
Is there any app, setting, or mod to fix this issue with the Moto X, short of installing a custom ROM? The phone is not rooted, but I could do so if that was required for a fix. I'd rather not use an app like Volume+ that doesn't integrate with the volume control button and would require a widget.
Thanks

this isn't a problem with the X so much as it is default behavior with Android. The HTC had a different method because HTC skinned Android to do what they wanted it to.
you basically have three options:
1. go into options and adjust manually
2. install an app (I don't have recommendations)
3. hold down the power button - this won't adjust volume but you can switch between vibrate on/off.
If you want an app to do this you should checkout Noyze.

If the phone is rooted, you could use Xposed with the Gravity Box module.

So in various widgets that let you control volumes there is:
- Ringer
- Notification
- Media
- Alarm
- Voice Call
- System (What is this and when is it used?)
PS: Im on stock 2.2.1 FRG83D
i don't have an answer to your question but i have a very similar question. do you know how to unlink ringer and notification ringtone levels?

Yes, Settings > Sound > Volume > Use incoming call volume for notifications
Thank you very much haha. That was so easy I feel stupid. Sorry I couldn't answer your question.

I'm pretty sure Google Navigation used to use the System volume, but it doesn't seem to anymore. Now I think it's only used for keyboard sounds.
Also used for the shutter sound in camera
Thanks man, works for the camera shutter. But has no effect on the volume rocker making noise when adjusting volume.

Right. It shouldn't, should it? It doesn't make sense to use a volume for that sound other than the volume of the channel that the button is changing.
I was looking for a way to mute the volume rocker. I am using NoLock app so I don't have the lock screen sound on/off feature so I am using the rocker and hold down, to go to vibrate but if i want to go back, it makes a noise.
Hi a lot of devices tie the notification volume to the ringer volume. Where when I use the volume rocker to adjust volume the notification volume gets adjusted as well. I don't seem to have that option on the Note. Anyone know of an app or setting I'm missing?
Thanks.

If you use the app "Quick Settings" you do have a option, "use ringer volume for notifications"

The app Extended Controls has a widget that has option you can tick that says "Use ringer volume as notification volume". Extended Controls is a very useful set of widgets, well worth it IMHO.
I did the recent ICS update on my stock VIvid this weekend by downloading from HTC and updating it through my computer. I couldn't get the OTA to install from my phone for some reason.
Anyhow, the overall volume has increased which is a good thing since with GB the volume was rather low.
I can't remember if the Notification Volume was a part of the Ringtone Volume in GB. Can someone with a GB Vivid check for me? I believe it was a separate volume adjustment.
I'm somewhat annoyed with ICS that there are only 3 volume adjustments you can make - (1) Games, Music, etc (2) Ringtone and Notification (3) Alarms. I want to be able to adjust the Notification separately from the Ringtone. Is there any way for this to be done?
Other than that (and losing my games' progress), I am overall satisfied with ICS.
I use an app called PERSIST | VOLUME CONTROL
its free from the market and allows for volume changing for
alarm, media, ringer, notification, system and voice, it also allows you to lock them (this was my main use for the app, I always bump the volume control as I'm used to the rocker being on the opposite side of the screen)

on a similar note, I'm pissed that HTC removed the custom tone selection from their exchange client... I wish I could just get the AOSP exchange client, its so nice, I don't know why htc even bother writing their own
FWIW, in general, in Gingerbread (not sure about "Sense" GB), you could have notification and ringer volumes unlinked. In ICS, these 2 are now linked and you can't unlink them without special apps (some work, some don't) or a custom ROM. Just check out some of the complaints over in the Galaxy Nexus forums about this. I'm not sure why Google made this change.
david, I will check out the app.
co.ag, so I was remembering it correctly - Sense GB had everything separate from each other. I wish Google did not link Notifications to Ringtone. Its just bloody annoying for me to have all the main tones loud. I had everything where I was comfortable with on GB (well, the ringtone could have been louder...heh).
Thanks for the help guys.
I just tried out Persist Volume Control. It does not allow the Notifications to be adjusted independently of the Ringtone. It behaves just like ICS where the two are linked.
Grr....

I have a question about volume on ics and such. Its about the keyboard clicks, lock/unlock tick, the volume levels on gingerbread were very loud and noticeable but on ics you have to hold the speaker to your ear to hear it, is it just the rom i'm running or ics in general?
On a side note volume for everything else is normal and working great.
Anybody might know how to raise the volume level just for the mentioned tones.
Running wildchilds ics 3.6
Volume Butler
Volume Butler is the best app for separate ringer and notification volumes, and it's free. The app is simply one of the best apps I've ever seen.

I installed gravity box, xposed for xperia, and nova launcher and noticed my phone volume is now gone. I first noticed the phone dialer was gone from the home screen upon installing nova launcher, so I put that back easily enough. I had enable the multiple volumes on gravity box and I thought it was working. But when I woke up, now the phone volume is gone. I disabled multiple volumes on gravity box and its still gone, just the media volume control is left. Maybe its some other option I enabled.. anyone know?
You don't have volume at all or just the sliders missing?

just the slider is gone. When I go to place a call the slider for phone volume comes back.
So since pie I hate the fact that my volume buttons only turn the media volume up or down. I have to go into sound settings to change ring volume. Anyone figure out a way to change this?

no, other devices are just like this too.
Unfortunately that's just how Pie works. It's definitely my least favorite part of Pie. You can change it if you the xposed module Gravity Box. Under media tweak, if you enable Force ring volume control then it return it to pre-Pie controls.
Volume
A-Volume widget is good.
