Some time ago I converted my M7 to a Google Play Edition. However, I went back to the stock Sense ROM. I'm not sure why though I do remember the Settings menu and the dialer app in the GPE looking horrible.
Now I'm thinking of going GPE again in anticipation of Android L - but has Android L been confirmed for the M7?
Yes it' confirmed for gpe edition and sense version, the second one after 90 days from the release so the gpe after one or 2 weeks I think

Thanks, think I'll switch back to GPE then
I'm going to switch back when the rom is released. Until then I'll stick with what I got now.

On second thought, I'm gonna wait for Android L to be released as well. I just remembered the butt ugly black settings menu and having to long press the quick settings to activate/deactivate and a couple of other things that drove me nuts when I had the GPE ROM installed

Is anybody else waiting for HTC to release the 4.2.2 base and seeing what the devs do with it before flashing a custom ROM? I've had my One for about 2 weeks now and it's still unrooted and running the stock ROM (this is the longest I've gone so far).
Just wondering if I'm alone in thinking that the devs will come up with better ROMs based on 4.2 than they currently have out for 4.1
Other than quick toggles, I didn't see many stand out features vin the preview.

4.2 isn't a huge step forward. There really is no point in waiting to root and unlock. It's still 'JellyBean' with a few extra features so the difference will be minimal, but I'm anxious for those quick settings myself. I'd say root and S-Off now to get it over with so you can flash immediately when 4.2 comes out.
I was going to wait too. But I got my phone two days ago and ended up flashing two days ago as well...

Not to sound like a lame-o but this is the first phone I've owned where I didn't feel the need to root it. Though I had similar feelings with my Epic 4G Touch a few years ago and ended up flashing probably 50 different ROMS, give or take.

I feel the same way, I've never gone this long without rooting a phone/tablet, it's usually a week at most.
This is the same boat I am in. I am not doing any of the over the air updates so it will be easier to root when it gets to that point. I am actually quite impressed with the phone (coming from the Evo 4g), I've actually thought about keeping this thing stock...then I remember that it will only get faster if I root and flash.
Yup, stock and not rooted. Waiting for the 4.2.2 and hopefully a working flashable rom of the Google Edition One with everything stable. I really want lockscreen widgets. This is the first phone where I'm not willing to sacrifice the stability of the phone, because sense 5 is pretty damn good. I'd definitely prefer an equally stable AOSP rom though.

Well.... if you look at some posts here from yesterday (2 posts up ) you will see the statement.... " Waiting for the 4.2.2 "
I waited a few weeks and started thinking that HTC dev unlock will wipe the device so I might as well get started. That and the process will be quicker once Sprint releases and development starts working to fix any of the unintended features on the new release.

So, I had my heart set on the One with Sense since it was announced and heard nothing but good reviews about it, but then the Google Edition was recently announced, it's basically a Super-Nexus. I currently have a Nexus 7 and a Droid X2 running CM10, so I'm familiar with Jellybean and like it very much!
So when I heard about the Nexus edition of the One, I was amazed. But then, I remembered since it's running stock Jellybean, it won't have the HTC only features like Zoe among others.
I'm open to the idea of changing the ROMs to get stock android if I bought the One with Sense on it...wait, is there a ROM that you can install to change to Sense 5 if I bought the Google edition!? That would be perfect if there was because I could try Sense if I wanted, but have Stock as my default and get all of Google's updates immediately!
I basically have to choose between:
HTC's Sense with all the Sense features and change the ROM to get to stock android. Slow to no OTA updates from Google.
Stock android with constant updates from Google as soon as they come out AND the stock experience. (Can still change the ROM)
I known this is a forum for the Sense HTC One, but what do you guys think? If you had this choice what would you do?
I just bought my HTC One a week ago, already having in mind that a Google Edition will be coming out, but as I don't live in the USA and given that it's going to be exclusive for the time being that wasn't such a big deal to me.
But I'm actually quite convinced that you are going to be able to switch from Sense to AOSP and vice versa, because they're the exact same hardware. Remember that tweak for the Optimus G that allowed you to basically turn it into a Nexus 4 from a software stand point? I'm sure there will be something similar to that and even if it's not supported officially, developers are going to find one way or another
I could even imagine something like an RUU to turn a regular One into a Google Edition. Well the 26th isn't that far away now, we'll see...
yes u will be able to switch roms

So there is ROM that will allow me to switch to Sense 5 if I buy a Google Edition HTC One?

There are several stock like roms with sense 5 in the android development section.
Read through and see which one suits you best.
Get the sense one. We already can change the phones identity so making it a Google edition shouldn't be any different

The HTC camera is enough of a reason for me not to care about

Just get either one, it doesn't matter much, to be honest. The Google Edition one has an unlocked bootloader and is probably S-OFF, and you can do both on the Sense edition as well. You can install any ROM you want on either one with no problems, whether sense-based or AOSP.
If u want a super nexus than this isn't the phone for you. Its not a nexus and never will be. I would go with the sense to get the great features. If you want stock it's better to get a nexus. (Just my opinion)

Are the sense roms get the android 4.3? schedules?
I'm curious as well: will the sense 5.0 based roms get the android 4.3 backend? Or are there incompatibilities (framework changes?), and we will have to wait for an official sense ~5.1 from HTC before we see Sense w/ 4.3 based roms?
Thanks!

no info at all yet unfortunately. It may take a while though
dont hold your breath
I'd rather it skip 4.3 and go to the next big update with an updated sense overlay. 4.3 is mostly just a bunch of under the hood stuff and nothing major.

+1 , Knowing how long they can take to do these updates, I'd rather they skipped this one and put effort into the next major release
Low power Bluetooth support
If you use bluetooth alot and have a new gen low power bluetooth device, 4.3 is a major update, if not, skip it.

Hi All,
I have a couple of questions around the KitKat roms in general. Main thing is how do i know i have KitKat and not an old version like JellyBean?
The reason i ask is that on the HTC website (http://www.android.com/versions/kit-kat-4-4/) KitkKat should have the features lists although looks nothing like that. I don't see a different phone app, i can't seem to get the full screen album art working. The main reason for updaing was to see those features but mine still looks like it always has done.
I have tried the ViperOne 5.0.0 and the Revolution Rom but all of the features above don't seem to be on my phone.
Rich
Those features are specific to the nexus 5. You can get the Google now launcher by looking in the themes and app section of the htc forum. The icons are also specific to the nexus 5. Not sure 100% but n4 also got those icons. Album art and certain tiny things were also exclusive to nexus 5 or stock Roms. Have you tried any gpe 4.4.2 Roms? I was on the htc one but moved on to the nexus 5.

Anything wrong with this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2652969
Easy on the double posting mate
and to answer you, you're looking at Google Edition features, ViperOne 5.0 and ARHD 51.0 are HTC Sense based.

If you are S-OFF !! (I think most GPE ROMs need S-Off)
You can take a look at @ClydeB1's index thread for GPE ROMs, including an ARHD version of close-to-stock GPE version.
Since I haven't tried them, I can't say if they have what you're looking for, so you'll need to check them out.
I've been away from the HTC phones for a few years. Picked up a Nexus 4 and stayed on aosp based roms.
Got myself an M7 a few days ago, unlocked the phone and flashed the latest ARHD which has Sense 6.
I find visually Sense 6 is less pleasing than 5 and 5.5, although that's probably just me.
Aside from a new Android version, are the advantages of Sense 6 definitely worthwhile.
Can't decide whether I will stay on Sense 6 or go back to an aosp based rom such as cm.
Mmmmmmm!!!!

To me the Sense features are what make the phone... Any phone will run an AOSP stripped down rom whats the point ?
You have blinkfeed / zoe / beats / TV remote / a nice gallery / a nice music player / a nice app drawer / a great settings layout /
If all that was available were plain jane AOSP / GPE phones you might as well be using an iPhone. And themers would be working overtime to get half the features you get in Sense 6.
Zoe got a nice upgrade in Sense 6 (don't know if 5.5 had the upgrade as well) I remember before, Zoe only took 3sec clips, now, if you hold the Zoe button, it will take longer clips than a quick 3sec one.
Sense 6 also has optional fonts and will work with font packs from the play store.
With the 4.4.2 and up versions, you also get the master key fix (big security bug) and in the 4.4.3 version, you get the fake ID vulnerability patch (another security bug).
