Hello, I have HTC One Intl (see my signature) on everything stock. Phone is S-off and rooted. Yesterday I had seen 4.3 OTA notification, downloaded it and tried to install, but installation failed in recovery (red triangle with exclamation). I've tried it several times, but no luck - phone reboots to recovery, installation process begins and fails at ~30 per cent.
Help me find out, why it happens (maybe i can find installation log somewhere, but don't know where to search) and how to install this update.
You need:
- Stock Recovery
- Stock rom without root
- Locked/Relocked bootloader
After your phone can install the OTA.

Recovery is stock.
Can I use Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper to temporary unroot? At least it gives such possibility, don't know will it work or not.
Is locked/relocked bootloader obligatory? if yes, I will search how to relock it again.
Thanks.

Dont mean to intrude, but I'm pretty sure he can leave the bootloader unlocked, even root I think
He does need to have stock recovery, stock rom (including the preloaded apps that get deleted when unlocking), I think that's about it.

Mate i have a friend that with s-off needed a relocked bootloader for OTA.
I'm not sure.
but i think is better upgrading with a flash or firmware and rom.

make sure the "preload" apps are for your version, mate!!
If you signature is correct: "ROM: Stock 2.24.401.8 (Android 4.2.2)" Maybe just best to use the Guru Reset ROM.
EDIT: I recommend full backup to PC first though, just in case!!

then you may just be missing the "preloaded" apps, here's an idea, why not dirty flash (ie no WIPE) the Guru Reset ROM: http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/guru_reset_m7_2-24-401-8-zip/
BTW: the reason I mentioned the backup to PC, is one time I flashed stock recovery (and accessed it), and i was unpleasantly surprised it wiped my internal storage.

Good luck, and if you do (and wanna help the rest of the community) can you try with both ROOT and unlocked bootloader first, and see if it works.
I know it's a bit of a hassle but at least you would be able to confirm if ROOT or unlocked bootloader are interfering with the update

Sorry guys, i'm not so patient - so flashed new firmware from OTA's zip archive, flashed TWRP and then flashed ARHD. I'm happy now
Moved this question from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51198721
I'm currently stock, rooted, S-OFF, and TWRP recovery. I'm flashed to 3.06.651.6 firmware.
I still get the OTA notifications, and my goal is to install the latest OTA update (without RUU) so that I can preserve data. I've created a TWRP backup, but that's the extent of it.
Any help is appreciated.
Other background - I reverted back to 3.06.651.6 after flashing firmware 4.06.xxx because I could not boot normally after that or did not know how.
My bootloader says Tampered, relocked

Ok
I have never done an OTA or Ran an RUU personally.
To the best of my knowledge you will have to flash the stock recovery and a stock rom to be able to take the OTA.
Sidenote: You say you are re-locked...when you unlock again it's going to wipe your device.
Backup everything important to your PC then run the RUU stuff is gonna get wiped either way might as well use the RUU as it's a cleaner method.
You'll have to flash the 4.06 firmware I pointed you to from the other thread to get the required hboot.

Serious Q - Am I not On the stock ROM if I never switched ROMs?
But OK, s=you're saying if I were even able to get the stock revoery reloaded, and receive the OTA, but then if i try to unloack bootloader after that I won't be able to? Also serious Q - Do you have a link on performing a good nandroid backup?
Next - if I did run the RUU, how would i quickly restore my data - just using titanium backup? is that the quickest/only way?

If you never changed roms then yes you are on a stock rom.
To unlock the bootloader again you would use Htc Dev again(unless you still have your unlock token) and by doing so it will wipe your phone.
Only way to nandroid is to have a custom recovery which means unocking bootloader.
I personally don't use Titanium Backup so can't answer that...I backup my phone/sdcard to my PC at least once a month (copy and paste to a folder on my PC)
I have sucessfully converted my AT&T HTC One to the Developers Edition. If install TWRP and root the device, then re-install the stock recovery, can I maintain the ability to receive OTA Updates?
Also can someone confirm that the 4.06.1540 recovery is the latest for 4.4.2 sense 6? (Found Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2545227)
Or if there is a better way to accomplish root etc.
Thank you in advance.

That is a good recovery to have in place *before* you start checking for the latest 5.x.x.x OTA. Technically it's not the "latest" (the latest one would be the one you will end up with *after* the OTA) but it's the right one for your situation.
Overall the short answer to your question is yes, you can get OTA's with this plan.
If you remove anything from /system you might not.
If you do more stuff (like downgrading HBOOT, installing a custom kernel, whatever) you might not.
But for most people in your situation, you'll get OTA's.
Generally.
Enjoy.

The best thing to do is a nandroid of your stock rom & recovery prior to installing TWRP and obtaining root. If you need to go back to stock you will have it. I haven't seen the stock recovery for 4.4.2 sense 6, it should be 5.11.1540.9.

Sure it is but unfortunately if has not been possible to (fastboot boot recovery.zip) since hboot 1.44
The best most people can do is after taking the update reflash TWRP and make a backup including recovery. then download and keep the stock recovery with it.
Thank you all for the response. Here is what I would like to do:
1. Backup my existing recovery through adb using the #dd command. Anyone know the correct syntax?
2. Install TWRP and backup the existing unrooted ROM.
3. Root the device. Do not remove any files from /system, no custom kernels (doesn't really matter since I will restore backup). Simply use titanium back to restore my apks and freeze the ones I don't use. I would like to install Xposed though.....
4. See OTA Update. Backup apks, restore unrooted. Restore stock recovery through adb. Anyone know why the syntax??
5. Run the OTA Update.
6. Profit.... Go back to step 1.
What do you all think? Any help with the syntax to dump and restore stock recovery?

doesn't know the #dd command but recovery can be extracted from the firmware package inside the ota.zip
anyway, I have all the latest dev edition recovery so you'll save a little time:
4.06.1540.2 MD5: 2bb3d9df9ce8c8329db8d22781613e2c

5.11.1540.9 MD5: c487a17382e2e1c207efae66fed00925

More Questions on Receiving OTA's
@alray On Step 4, to receive the OTA's, in addition to restoring stock recovery, wouldn't it be necessary to unroot the device and disable Xposed?

no need to unroot to be able to apply the ota but you might loose root after the update, in that case, root again after the update.
I have updated mine many times with xposed still enabled and didnt have any issue. But you might want to disable module like ''sense 5 toolbox'' when updating to sense 6... Anyway if you want to be safe, yes you can disable xposed but this is not required.
@alray Thank you very much! I was unrooting and disabling Xposed, etc. Good to know I can "Keep it Simple"!
@alray The link for the latest recovery is 404ed. Can you repost? EDIT: Nevermind. Removed the [/HIDE] from the link and it worked.
Where is the OTA saved BTW?
Thanks again for all the advise. I may update the OP to outline these in detail.
The ota is saved to /sdcard/downloads

Root (su) by it's self does not stop you from getting OTA updates
changed system files / missing (data/preload) files and custom recovery are what stop you from getting OTA updates
a rooted phone will update fine / you just loose root

when you unlocked the bootloader you already lost some system files (data/preload)
depending on your phone model, their are already stock rom backups you can install along with stock recovery to take OTA updates
you get these stock backups by flashing a RUU, with s-off you don't need to lock / unlock the bootloader so all the system files are intact

The second problem of unlocked bootlader is even more serious, but so far it affects only 2 devices: HTC One X+ and HTC One. Those who used htcdev.com before probably noticed, that unlocking bootloader wipes user data, including content of virtual SD card (because virtual SD card = /data/media).
This is no surprise, because every user is warned about it and have a chance to step back. As long as all applications coming with stock ROM are stored on /system partition, there are no side effects. But for some very strange reason in HTC One X+ and HTC One, some of the stock applications like Flashlight, Calculator, Ringtone-trimmer, PDF Viewer, Teeter, Sound Recorder and more, are stored on /data partition instead. Result? After unlocking bootloader with official HTC tool you end up without having some of the basic HTC applications like Calculator or Flashlight, because /data partition (as mentioned above) has been wiped. System partition on HTC One is almost 2 GB big. Not enough to include few more .apk files?
What is more, missing stock applications on /data partition makes your device not capable to receive any OTA updates from HTC. Why? Because every OTA update checks MD5 checksum of every file that originally came with your device. So even if you didn't flash any custom ROM and your /system partition is unmodified, you won't be able to install OTA update.
This is an example of updater-script part from OTA:
assert(apply_patch_check("/data/preload/Calculator.apk","85aa7b00ec97ffe7179739c8815bf102c4f8666e","7055f0376e6b56be6414fdf8495b82db7fd38564")||apply_patch_check("/data/preload/Calculator.apk.uninstall","85aa7b00ec97ffe7179739c8815bf102c4f8666e","7055f0376e6b56be6414fdf8495b82db7fd38564"));
Once assert will fail, OTA update will cancel the installation process. I think every user should be warned, that unlocking bootloader results in no longer OTA updates support.

The bootloader status doesn't matter, you can be locked/unlocked/relocked and the ota will work fine but you must restore all the content of /data/preload for ota update to install
B) the OTA updater-script
you need to be on stock recovery, custom recoveries will not work!
what will it check:
1- the ROM fingerprint, CID, and MID
2- if you pass those, the OTA will check the actual system files (thousands of them) using SHA-1 hash to confirm they are as expected. Why? because OTA is just a patch (diff) between two versions, so in order to patch a file (as opposed to replacing it), it has to be an exact match.... if even 1 out of those thousands of files is not as expected, the OTA will not work. ---> stock recovery will change to red triangle.
Note: this also usually includes the /data/preload folder which gets deleted when using HTCdev unlock.

If you have 100% stock /system, /data/preload and stock recovery you will able to install ota update, Bootloader status doesn't matters, only the files that are deleted when unlocking it the first using htcdev.com:
I'm being lazy here, sorry ,but I did promise to post something
A) when do you receive and OTA notification:
1- the ROM fingerprint, CID, and MID must match (if) available OTA
2- does anything else matter (root, kernel, modifications, S-On/S-Off, etc., even recovery) -> NO, but they may below
Note: this also usually includes the /data/preload folder which gets deleted when using HTCdev unlock.
what will it do if the above are OK:
* the OTA will patch the existing files
* delete any files no longer part of the update
* install any new files that come with the update
* and finally update the firmware (hboot, recovery, kernel, thouchscreen drivers, bootsplash, etc.) <- note, since the OTA is an update the firmware.zip will only contain the files that need to be updated, so for example, touchscreen drivers are not included in every OTA, only when necessary.
and to the big question, what will interfere with successful OTA:
any modification to the files the OTA checks (in step 2 above), so:
- does a custom kernel matter (boot.img) -> technically no, but custom kernels may also overwrite certain system files, so in practice yes they may interfere if some stock system file was changed.... not because boot.img is custom, but because the files in /system which got replaced. (so flashing back a stock boot.img will not solve this!!)
- does root matter -> same as above, if the root package modifies any original files then yes, otherwise no
- unlocked bootloader -> No, doesn't matter
- S-On/S-Off -> No, doesn't matter

So if you still have all files in /data/preload its okay even if your bootloader is unlocked.

Wrong forum. Ask on your device forum. This is for M7 only
Hey , im new to rooting and the forums so sorry if somethings are not properly explained.
I recently managed to root my uk variant m7 unlocked to any service with the latest twrp recovery.
I have recently found the venom rom which i would like to install to futher customize my rooted device, but i need to upgrade my android to 5.0.2 and i am currently on 4.2.2.
in the toolbar it says 'system update avaliable' and after installing it says 'system update ready' and im guessing this will bring me to 5.0.2 firmware. after clicking on it it reboots my phone and for some reason enters the recovery. from this point i do not know what to do.
so to summarise, i need to upgrade my m7 from 4.2.2 to 5.0.2 nut when i do it enters my twrp recovery and i do not know what to do
system details:
HTC One M7 UK variant unlocked to any service
rooted with SuperSU
Stock rom (4.2.2)
Stock kernel
Thanks

You can't update your phone in its current status. You need stock recovery installed, unmodified /system files and /data/preload which is deleted during the htcdev bootloader unlock process. You'll probably need to use a RUU or something else.
system details:
HTC One M7 UK variant unlocked to any service
rooted with SuperSU
Stock rom (4.2.2)
Stock kernel

Unfortunately, this is not really relevant info, post the output of "fastboot getvar all" command, remove your IMEI # before posting.
so i have to unroot my phone
great this is going to take a while :/
if i factory reset my phone will it remove the bootloader and root?

What? You might want to read about what a bootloader is
A device without a booloader is called a paperweight
and root?

A factory reset only wipes user data. Root files are stored in /system partition which is not affected by a factory reset so short answer no, like I said you'll probably need a RUU or something else (stock odex rom/nandroid backup/guru reset rom) to reset your phone back to stock. Post the output of "fastboot getvar all"

Its possible to download the update elsewhere and install it through twrp recovery?
If yes, where i can find these updates in zip form?
If not, what's the simple option to install the update?
thanks

If your phone is S-off, you can download the Ota zip files and install them incrementally (can't skip a version) using stock recovery. That doesn't change the fact that all files in /system and /data/preload must be unmodified.
Imo, the simplest way to update if your phone isn't stock is with a RUU. If your phone is stock, reflash stock recovery and update with Ota, if it's stock and soff you can update with Ota zip files if you can find all the ones you need.
