[Q] Massive battery drain - TouchPad Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I think a few others have had this problem (e.g. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2239665), but I haven't seen any solutions. I am running Milaq's CM11 nightlies and when I installed a new version about 3 weeks ago, my battery life suddenly plummeted, not to the 30-40mA range, but to around 2000 mA! The battery is dead within an hour or two of being taken of a charger and it takes much longer to charge than previously. Any ideas would be appreciated. I'll give more details below:
Symptoms:
Massive power usage (and fast battery usage) even when in standby mode with screen off (30%+ loss/hour)
Tablet gets hot in upper right (when viewed in portrait mode). Is this where the CPU is?
Behavior seen in WebOS and Android, both after clean installs using TPToolbox
GSam Battery Monitor reports that the screen is using most of the power even when the screen is off (odd)
In WebOS, if I turn off WiFi, the battery drain stops. What could cause wifi to be such a massive battery drain and any ideas on how to stop it?
What I've done:
reflashed A6 firmware multiple times (at least 4)
completely wiped touchpad with tptoolbox and reinstalled Milaq CM11 nightly that is working fine on another TP
completely wiped touchpad with tptoolbox and installed jcsullins CM11 build, 09142014 I think
completely wiped touchpad with tptoolbox and installed WebOs 3.0.5 using WebOSDr

Batt.
Sounds like you could have something eating lots of data. Is there something you keep installing that could be downloading behind the scenes? Just a thought. Have you tried installing android only without webos onboard?

Battery Drain on G1

Guys,I own a T Mobile G1 Android 1.6 Phone and recently I’m facing some problems. The problem that appeared recently is with the battery drain. before some days ago the battery of my G1 lasted up to 4-5 days, without using Wireless, GPS, and Bluetooth. If I used the mentioned services normally the battery lasted up to two days. But recently the battery is draining too fast. Within 4 hours the battery goes down less then 15% even I do not use any mentioned services. I keep my phone on standby, without talking a single minute with the phone, not using any service etc, and again it goes down very quick. I took some measures according to HTC instructions how to save the battery but again it does not function. I uninstalled all applications and reset the phone to factory setting by again same thing. Then I searched on the Google some instructions, I tried also that one’s but again it does not function. I always used HTC charger that came with the phone but again same problem. What is the strangest thing that after some days the battery gets back and works perfectly for two weeks, which means I use the phone normally without charging 4-5 days. As I operate very well with the smartphones, Pocket PC’s etc I start analyzing G1 and monitoring very closely why the battery goes down, I monitored for a long time the query under the :About Phone-Battery use- and I see there that Andorid OS is using the battery from 76% up to 85%. Now it came to my mind that something is keeping engaged or it keeps running the Andorid OS always on. Then I suspected that thre my be any virus on my phone, but I installed form Market Flexilis/lookout antivirus application, but there was no virus and again the battery goes very quickly down. As I said after sometime the system returns to normal and the battery lasts for 4-5 days, and when I check the information under Phone,Battery use, I see that the Andorid OS is spending only 6% of the battery. Comparing with the previous description it is a huge difference. According to my opinion there is a small problem with any file which keeps always running to much the Andorid OS. Can you please give me any instruction why Andorid OS is spending that much the battery? Or give me any instruction how to prevent this operation that keeps Android OS to much engaged? or is there any programming mistake?, is there any need for update?, do I need to root my phone as it is not rooted? The reason why I’m thinking that there is a technical problem is because sometimes the system gets back to normal and sometimes it goes out of normal running. I appreciate a lot if you could help me to resolve the mentioned problem.
I've noticed the same thing on my G1 sometimes there is fast battery drain and it seems associated with Android OS. The percentage is over 70%. I also notice it be associated with the display as well. Could be that there is some process that won't stop running and is using Android OS or it could be that on other occasions the display is not going into sleep mode properly. I wish I knew how to fix these problems but I don't. I just observe them.
The battery issue, is an up and down problem for me. Sometime I can go through it in one day or less, other days it will last me for 2 plus days.
It also could be that the battery need replacing. Who's know.
I just bought a 2nd hand G1 - works just fine. I rooted and installed CM6.1.
My battery drains within 1-2 hours. I've tried various methods of resetting stats, with no luck. How frustrating! I wonder if it's a battery hardware problem or software?

I also faced bad battery life on various roms. Since I'm using COS-DS (android 2.3.3) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=950765 and the Biffmod kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=950765 the phone runs more than 24h when texting and calling. Of course you should apply the 14MB RAM hack in comination with this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139. On standby (everything off, except data and 3g) my G1 runs >48h, before it needs to be plugged in.

Sounds like the basic description of the USB Charging Bug.
The bug triggers if the G1 is using a kernel starting 2.6.35 and onward tree, and charged using the USB instead of AC wall charger.
A couple of option to avoid the super discharge after that (you can use either);
1. Reboot after you unplug the USB charger.
2. Change kernel to one from 2.6.34 tree
You can also visit the Dev sub-forum, there's a thread there discussing the debugging process.
It is so unpredictable for me...I have just got into the habit of a reboot after unplugging USB.
Battery drain on the G1
I have the same problem. Even on standby it drops to less than half of its battery life. Sometimes its worse. today i noticed that the battery percentage was at 84. Next thing I know the phone reboots itself and it displays that it has 1% battery, battery icon empty all in red and LED flashing in red. Then I turn it off connect it to the charger, after a couple of seconds I turn it back on and says its 90 something percent. Could be a virus or just a battery bug, that's my guess. I scanned the phone with Lookout Security and there was no Virus, malware or spyware found.
I want to try different kernels for this battery issue but want to make sure I am installing the right one.
I have CM6.1 with 2.22.23.02 radio and DangerSPL installed. Can I just load any of the kernels built for EBI0?
Specifically, can I flash the kernel in the 1st post here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010932
Thanks.

[Q] Major Screen Battery Drain Help

Alright so I've been running the cyan nightlies, I just updated to the latest one, installed the battery fix. Everythings working fine, put my phone down for and hour and the batt is at like %75, I go under battery use and it puts the screen at 79%, is this normal? I had my screen off most of the time and when it was on it wasnt bright and if this isn't normal how can I fix it?
Have you rebooted to see if it does this after every reboot? Try rebooting normally then see if its still doing it.
If so, then reboot into recovery, wipe dalvik, then reboot normally. Check your battery stats again after a couple hours and see if it's still doing it after the dalvik wipe.
(FYI, this belongs in Q&A section)
can you link to the battery fix plz?
I have had very high display usage on every version of CM6, and you will find it is a VERY common complaint on CDMA Hero's running CM6.
Everyone says it's because Froyo is more efficient, and uses less battery overall, so your display percentage is higher.
I call B.S. on that. I have had poor battery life with the more than 20 nightly versions I have run. I have had the Hero since the day before it came out, and I have never had worse battery life. I even bought a new battery thinking my battery was dying on me, and I still won't make it through a day (7 am - 11 pm) without plugging the phone in during the day.
My guess is there is something up with the display/lights/light sensor drivers that have been implemented in CM6 that don't allow something with the display to sleep properly. Either that, or the battery usage screen is simply completely inaccurate.
I could literally reboot my phone, leave it untouched with the screen off for four hours, then turn on the screen for one minute, and the display usage would shoot up to 50-75%. There is no way one minute of screen usage is using more battery than 4 hours of phone standby using the radio, checking email/twitter/facebook/gmail.
Anyway, that's just my opinion on the matter. Other than the battery life, the newest nightlies of CM6 are simply incredible, so I just deal with the poor battery life.
@ziggy682 -- Thanks for that info. I haven't yet tried CM6 (mainly cuz I'm so dependent on some Sense apps and widgets), and now that I'm reading about some battery issues I may hold off on trying it even longer.
@omair2005 -- if you haven't found it yet, here's the new thread on collin_ph's battery tweak specifically for CM/darch ROMs: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=762283

[Q] [RESOLVED] Battery stuck at 100% permanently after CM11 install

Hi
I I recently installed CM11 on my HP Touchpad. Previously it was running an ancient build of CM9 from way back when, so, having not used it in ages, I decided to upgrade. Prior to installing CM11, everything was working ok. I tested the tablet to make sure the battery and everything else was working, all seemed ok. I then charged the device from 70% to a full charge. Here was what I did:
1. I ran TPToolbox v42, and chose the Complete Data Reset option (I had no intention of ever using WebOS again, so it seemed like the fitting choice, also I thought a fresh start would also be a good idea).
2. I chose install Android, and copied the following files to my device, once my PC mounted it:
-cm-11-20150113-SNAPSHOT-jcsullins-tenderloin.zip
-update-PhilZ_CWM-jcs-dm-tenderloin-20140612.zip
-pa_gapps-modular-pico-4.4.4-20150125-signed.zip
3. The device then rebooted into recovery, and successfully flashed the ROM and gapps, and within minutes I was running CM11 and everything seemed to be ok. I noticed that through the entire process, both TPToolbox and recovery were reporting a 100% charge. At the time, I thought nothing of it as I previously charged it to 100%.
Now, the device reports the battery at 100%, at all times. When I plug it in the wall charger, it says "charged" on the lock screen. I have rebooted the device 4-5 times, booted into recovery, booted into TPToolbox and performed the battery firmware update, installed BMW and tried wiping stats, among every other troubleshooting I know how to do, and I'm stumped. BMW says that the battery is averaging about -8ma while in deep sleep, so it looks like it isn't a bad battery. I have been searching the web for others who've encountered this, with a few people reporting this issue over the past few years with no posted fix. All I can say is that I doubt it's an issue with the ROM as it's a clean install, and the issue is persisting in both recovery and in the TPToolbox. So I doubt re-installing will fix it...?
Does anyone have any advice to give me? Thanks in advance.
Edit: Booted back into the TPToolbox and did another Complete Data Reset, then created WebOS volumes. Ran WebOS doctor 3.05 and was able to get back into WebOS. Left the tablet overnight and now the battery shows 97%. Strange part about all of this was, even after a wipe and a fresh Android install with 2-3 hours of screen on time doing heavy tasks such as installing apps and testing apps, and another wipe and fresh WebOS install with over an hour of screen on time doing heavy tasks, the battery still read 100% before I went to bed! I installed Dr Battery (preware app) and it says my battery health is good. Still, I'm gonna do a few charge cycles before re-installing Android.
But... I don't want to go back to web OS
I flashed kit Kat a while back, and everything was good. But for the last month, this thing has been sitting with an empty battery. Then I got it charged and left it on the charger while I was out of town for the last week. Now I've been using this thing for 2 hours, and it says I'm fully changed. I really don't want to go back to web OS if I can help it.
Any wisdom for me (besides I shouldn't be so mean to this battery)?
Edit: the problem fixed itself out. Just took a couple hours of screen on time. Actually lasted 4 days on a single charge.

Some help or advice with high battery drain please..

Hi everyone,
I have recently gone back to my touchpad mainly for multimedia usage. Mainly youtube and kodi. I do however have some really high battery usage which I would like to try and understand. I keep the screen at around 50% brightness.
I am running the latest CM11 KitKat rom by jsullins..
I'm getting all these figures by using Cool Tools.
* While in sleep it seems to be draining at -11mA
* Homescreen with nothing running it's draining at -799mA
* Streaming a movie from my pc with Kodi it drains at -1207mA
Does this seem normal?
Battery Drain
Most of us are using 3C's Battery Monitor.
11 while sleeping is not that much above 7 or 8.
Something is definitly running when your screen is on.
Use Touchpad Toolbox to reflash yoour A6. (I now have it permanently on the Touchpad and accessable on the boot up menue.
Battery Drains off @ 55%
Hello Experts,
Another qn on touchpad battery issues. I'm seeing some strange behavior with regards to my touchpad's charging & discharging capabilities . I notice it charging steadily to 40% and shortly thereafter it spikes up to 100% ( verified from a battery monitor app) . Likewise while discharging , I see a gradual decline to around 55-60% and thereafter the device just powers off abruptly citing 0% battery
I see the same behavior on both CM for Android 4.4 & Android 5.x .I have also reflashed the A6 firmware via the toolbox but still no improvement. Can anyone kindly advise as to what I could do to address this issue?
I have done a lot of research via google search and looked through xda forums but haven't found anyone report this sort of a defect.
I would appreciate if you could provide some feedback assuming you have seen this issue or guide me to an appropriate forum where this issue was fixed?

Nook HD battery issue but only on custom rom. Any fixes?

Hi,
I own a Nook HD Hummingbird tablet that on a custom rom experiences battery issues. The original battery was replaced after a issue caused unexpected shutdowns at 50% battery even on a stock rom. Now the new battery appears to give a good 4-5 hours on stock with no apparent issues. However when running a Cyanogenmod 13 build by @amaces the device or OS doesn't seem to know when to shutdown. I'll get the device to 1% then the device will last another 30 minutes or more with the low battery warning. Sometimes I'll see the battery percentage magically increase to 10% or more with reflecting results in the battery graph you can view in settings although I did not plug the Nook into any power source. When the device is truly out of battery it will just go off, no "power off" popup or any indication of a clean shutdown. This worries me that I might loose data unexpectedly if I go long enough without being able to plug the Nook into a power source. Does anyone have ideas why this maybe happening and any possible workarounds or solutions?
If you carefully check out the CM13 thread where you got your ROM from, you will find a couple of posts describing a solution for most battery woes. It essentially goes something like this: The battery status area in the hidden partition or folder has become corrupted. Wipe everything. Install the stock rom and stock recovery. Boot into the stock recovery and reset to factory settings. Boot the system and let it settle - this stock rom has some extra magic in it that apparently does something in the system and hidden partitions to re-create the hidden battery status sections that can become corrupted by repeated ROM installing. the stock OS may or may not be required to populate it first time around. I played safe and let it reboot fully as this only cost 15mins with no effort from me.
After it has settles from the re-boot you can run-down the battery to test the behaviour if you wish. Otherwise you can now reflash TWRP and re-install CM13.
I have paraphrased a little, but this is the gist of it. I suggest you search the CM13 thread for "battery woes" or something similar to get the exact details.
It worked form my HD.
Does CM13 on your Nook HD shutdown properly on low battery? I wonder because after all the resetting I performed on my Nook HD I still see the issue of CM13 not shutting down properly when battery is low 1%
You beat me to this one. That's pretty accurate paraphrasing.
