Moto X MHL Out - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So the first generation Moto X does not support MHL out (phone simply shuts off as soon as MHL cable plugged in)
Does 2nd get Moto X support MHL out?
http://gadgets.ndtv.com/motorola-moto-x-gen-2-1962 Says no
http://www.anandtech.com/show/8523/the-new-motorola-moto-x-2014-review says yes
which one is it?
And if it doesn't that is extremely disappointing considering my old HTC One S supports MHL

Plugging a cable into your phone to share the screen is so 2011.
Most of what you want to accomplish here can be done with other means, e.g. using a Chromecast to cast your screen, watch your videos, see your pictures, listen to your music, or do whatever else.

I'd like to know also. I have a camp in the boonies (no internet) so we always use mhl on rainy days. If mhl doesn't work, and since there is no IR blaster, I might just be passing on this phone, as much as I want it! Ugh.

I believe in Lollipop you'll be able to
sent from my Moto X (2014)

From what I heard last year's had no mhl and that article claims that had it too. So they are misinforming people on last year's model at least, therefore are not credible.

That's incorrect. Dl mirror enabler from the play store and boom.... Root required..... Just need a wifi connection

Thank you. I'll look into that. To bad my new Moto x don't have root. Does this app work for dlna or just chromecast?

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate the time you put in to show off all these cool features. I'm still waiting on Verizon to release the Note 2 unfortunetly. When using the Allshare dongle does the multi-screen feature work. For example could you watch Netflix and browse the web, and if so is it smooth. Thanks again for the video.
Oh, not tried it to be honest! Can't believe that slipped my mind, I will test it later and let you know.
Can someone please sticky this

OK, tried it, but whenever you watch video it full-screens the video to the external display (it is still split screen on the device and you can interact with the other window, but I don't think that is what you were after?).

is it possible to connect MHL adapter to USB hub (using a converter from 11pin microUSB to USB, if such thing does exists) so we can use HDTV mirroring and USB OTG simultaneously?

Oh that actually sounds pretty nice being able to stream video(hopefully Netflix) to the TV, and still browse on the phone. I was actually kinda hoping there would be a way to do exactly what you said it does. Thanks for trying that out, the days till they release it on Verizon are slowing down even more now.

Is there a specific otg usb cable for the Note 2, more specifically t889 ? I had been searching every scenario , 5 pin, t889, etc. and can't find any that specifically mention for the Note 2. Meanwhile, I read posts and comments about people connecting the wrong usb otg and bricking their phone. What are you using? Thanks~

[Q] Wireless display over wifi and HTC One : miracast ?

Hi,
I'm looking for a device that would allow me to replicate the screen of my HTC one on my full HD TV.
I would like to to able to do the same thing with the same device but with my mac
I think my solution is called miracast.
Am i right ?
Which device is known to work perfectly with the HTC One ?
Any idea of how to make it work with my macbook pro and iPad ?
many thanks !
HD MediaLink
Are you talking about the HD Media Link? This little accessory mirrors the screen on the HTC One to your TV. But depending on what you're doing, your experience may vary. If you like to look at photos and basically anything still, then this will work. But any fast paced moving pixels, forget about it. The only game that I've tried that works well is angry birds, but even then it stutters. I don't know how you plan on using it, but I'd say it's not worth $90. ATT gave it away for free during their preorder promotion.
This device, to the best of my knowledge, does not work with any other device besides HTC devices with at least Sense 4.0. If you want your mac/iphone/ipod to work, you need to get an appletv. Hope this helps.

I'm talking about a miracast dongle/box that i'll be able to use with my htc one, my iPad, my S2, my macbook pro, etc
Anyone have try Netgear PTV3000 with HTC One?
According to Google, the HTC One supports Miracast, but for your Apple devices only Airplay will work. Try to find a device that supports both.

There is a device called Xiaomi Box by a chinese company which is the only known device which supports Miracast as well as Airplay. Although this device is very hard to get due to its high demand in china. Try your luck. Most other devices like Belkin screencast, netgear ptv 3000, etc only support miracast.

I tried a Samsung allshare cast dongle with the HTC One and it seems to work. The One sees it as a miracast device and connects OK. The screen updates just fine but there is a serious audio sync issue when playing videos. I need to do some more testing.

Miracast should be universal solution for Android devices, it is still young technology and there is not much information or tests and reviews.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracast
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/02/21/feature_wtf_is_miracast/
Bit of a flop about this is that we can't use existing technology, wireless connection, TV, PC's or consoles for that, like with DLNA. Those are designated dongles that plug into TV or monitor. If you type "miracast" in eBay search you'll find some dongles, but IMHO they are still too expensive, on par with Android media players which are far more complex and versatile. There are some hints that it can be enabled in Windows 7/8.1 using Intel WiDi but that is hardware limited. Maybe not for long

One sees Bravia as Miracast compatible device, Bravia registers One and then after looong waiting nothing happens. And again, and again, reboot, restart, nothing. Oh well.

Maybe 4.2.2 will fix that?
I already am on 4.2.2. - ARHD 12. We even updated software on TV, didn't help.
Well, in that case it sucks...
It would be great to have this functionality out of the box...

I have a Raspberry Pi connected to my TV, running XBMC (xbian).
I can simply use the "Select Player" option in the top right menu on my HTC when viewing pictures and select my XBMC device (xbian) I can then control the slideshow, shown on my TV pretty cool.
The videos I made with the HTC One are using 22mbit/s bitrate (ridiculously high) so that will never work via Wifi (unless you have a very expensive 11ac router).
But I could test it with other videos of course... will report back.
using the Yatse app, you will be able to stream anything to XBMC btw... but its a paid app. I think it uses DLNA tech.

Hi Globen, is this with videos taken on the HTC One or streaming videos? What's a youtube video like? I only ask because mine has a serious lipsync issue but works fine for photos and non-video screens.

anyone here have chromecast?

im thinking about getting one when i go pick up a nexus 7 today. is it just a mirroring device?
It is not a mirroring device. It allows you to stream content from supported services, using your device as a remote control. In other words... if you send a YouTube or Netflix video to it from your handset, the ChromeCast actually connects to YouTube or Netflix and starts streaming.

I probably won't use it then being as I have a ps3 for all of that
If you already have some equivalent of a home theater PC, a Chromecast is a little redundant.
I love mine, though - it basically gives me a HTPC in a tiny, low power device that I can unplug and take with me traveling.
It appears that Google has put some hooks into Android 4.4.2 that may support screen mirroring in the future, though.
Actually it can mirror the chrome browser on the PC or Mac. I will assume HBO go has an app coming and plex is semi supported (will be fully in a month or two I'd guess)

I have one. Its just nice using your phone or tablet to control everything instead of some other ui. Though I got it when it came with 3 months Netflix so it was basically $10.
Sadly it doesn't support a lot of services yet like a full htpc does but it has a lot of potential.

ahhh. I am getting my chromecast in a few weeks, just haven't gotten any apps for it yet. glad HBOgo is supported now!
I have one and barely use it but it is pretty cool, kinda a novelty. Say someone is telling you about something on youtube and you are by your tv and want everyone in the room to see it, just cast it to the tv and there it is.
I have one but I really didn't use it that much because it lacked the ability to cast local data. Now that it can it has much more purpose. Android mirroring is in the works from what I've read which is pretty cool.
I tried to explain a chromecast to someone and said it's similar to a wireless HDMI cable. It's perfect for me since I can take it to work and do training in one big swoop as opposed to having my shift sit down at a computer one at a time and hope they actually do what I told them to do.
I use it almost daily, stream my hbo go, and comcast, hulu and other things to it. There is rumor that it will we getting device mirroring in the near future as someone found some code relating to it in 4.4 kit kat.
I just got one a few days ago, after the Plex update, since I needed it for media center streaming.

I have a Chromecast that I use on the small TV in my bedroom. I like it better than the Roku I used to have in there, and it's more useful (Roku, as far as I know, won't stream Google Music, and I use my TV as my speakers in the bedroom). I recently downloaded Real Cloud, because I think you can cast videos from any of your devices with the app on it - so I want to see if I can install the app on my laptop where I have some movies and cast them to the TV using the Android app.

It works way better than PS3 for streaming services and uses a very small amount of power. PS3 is a waste of energy for netflix and what not.
I haven't found any other way to stream Google Play Music All Access (without plugging in), and it's actually pretty great for that purpose alone. Play/Pause, Prev/Next, and volume control, all wirelessly from the phone.
I actually just picked up a second one since I had a $25 credit at Amazon, and they are selling them for $32 with free 2nd day shipping with Prime. Cost me $7 out the door, and landed on my porch 2 days later.

being a parent, having netflix is awesome. and, since we watch zero adult programming, hulu is awesome too. so i have 4 as it works as a perfect replacement for a PS3/HTPC, etc solution - especially where you can't have one of those devices (or multiple devices).
i just disconnected my htpc from the main TV because support on a few items were starting to get scarce. i have my Cc plugged in now instead. the only drawback is its less convenient to stream media from my local drive. i wish there was an easy solution. Real Cloud makes it sound liek you have to upload the media first.

[Q] Audio through tablet or phone?

I have not seen any specific threads addressing this, and thus far I am guessing I know the answer to my own question.. but is it possible to use my device for audio instead of my television? My specific issue is the fact that I am using an old computer monitor for my chromecast in my bedroom. It does not have HDMI, so I am using an HDMI to DVI converter (no audio). I'm fairly certain that there's no way (doubt my Nexus 7 being rooted would help) to stream the audio through my device but I thought I'd ask anyway. Thanks people.

Not really since the CCast for all intents and purposes is pulling the file from the source and while you could probably get the mbile device to pull the same file it would be next to impossible to sync the two in any meaningful way.
Your best bet is to get a HDMI to VGA Breakout cable/box that will pull the Audio out of the HDMI so you can plug into an amp or Powered Speakers.
http://www.amazon.com/HDMI-VGA-converter-Audio-Converter/dp/B003O55U8K
But if you use one of those your likely to lose the ability to play some content that requires HDCP to play (I'm thinking Netflix might require this)

That was an idea I had. But that looks like a VGA when the computer monitor has DVI. To get what I'd need to get sound running with the converter price wise, it'd almost make more sense just to get something that has an HDMI input. This was only a temporary method until I get married. After that we'll have plenty of devices collectively to get anything we need working on any of our televisions. I'd use my television with my Chromecast but around 4 years ago the HDMI ports were fried by the cable guy somehow. So all I have connected now is a 360 connected through component cables. If it wasn't for my Android phone and tablet I'd be in the technological stone age.

You can get an HDMI audio extractor box but make sure it has the type of audio you need (analog, digital coax, or digital optical)
Some computer monitors allow audio over DVI, but it's still hit and miss.

Yeah I considered that. But with all things considered, a $40 price tag is a pretty steep alternative for what I was hoping. Maybe when Chromecast mirroring is released it will accomplish what I was hoping for.

True. That's why I didn't post the $99 one.
If your TV is under warranty I'd get it fixed.
Even if you got audio out of your device it would be very difficult to sync it with what's playing on Chromecast, as they'd essentially be pulling two entirely separate streams.
The same would hold for Android screen mirroring when it arrives, but that would be a delay due to having to get the screen data to Chromecast.

TV is fairly old and hasn't been under warranty for a while. It's a 47". Once we get married we'll be purchasing a 60" or so one. The 360 works fine with component cable on it for now. I'll be using the Chromecast with the newer TV. If I didn't have that engagement ring expense I'd already have that 60" along with my '69 Charger. She offered to help pay for it, but what's the fun in that?!

Not necessarily. iFixit's teardown showed the radio is an AzureWave AW-NH387 802.11 b/g/n WLAN, Bluetooth and FM Combo Module, so it's Bluetooth 3.0 capable and compatible with North American and European FM radio bands.
In theory Google could give us Chromecast FM, hehe.
The Lytro camera had similar radio capabilities which were disabled at launch. They eventually enabled the WiFi, though in an AdHoc mode, and they've pretty much written off Android support, so it was a bit of a wash to me.

If it wasn't for my Android phone and tablet I'd be in the technological stone age.

They sell the same type of box with DVI output...So just buy the appropriate box for your connections.
You can find them for under $100 (prob around $60) but then again if your going to spend that much your probably better off just saving for a good TV which would accommodate all your devices properly.

No MHL?

Hey everyone. I gotta say, the droid turbo is an incredible phone even without the promised 48 hour battery life. However, I can not find any info on support for MHL or not. I've got a pioneer radio (this one to be exact) that demands it and so far I can't get it to work. Any help/alternatives to MHL? Thanks.

When I looked for the spec everything I read kept referring to some form of casting or mirroring wirelessly. I am disappointed and pretty confident there is no MHL

I don't know about MHL, but it is compatible with WiDi, MiraCast and AllCast/AllShare.
Just turn on your WiFi then bring up the toggles from the notifications screen and you will see a Cast Screen option.

Yeah i knew that, but i don't know how to get the radio to communicate with my phone.
This is on Motorola site. Doesn't say what phone it works with but I would assume it would work with ours. Too bad it's out of stock for the $3 bucks they want I would have given it a shot.

Pretty sure that's for the older phones that had mini-HDMI ports on them.

I think it is too. Is there a way to stream to a chromecast without a network?
Any luck on this? I just recently bought a pioneer radio as well, and trying to do the same thing. I have everything connected, but it turbo doesn't play along. Have you made any progress with yours? Bought a new phone that does support mhl??

Droid Turbo doesn't support video out over a wired connection. Your best bet is to buy a Miracast dongle like the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter or Belkin Miracast Adapter and an HDMI coupler (Female to Female).
Connect the coupler to the HDMI sticking out of the radion and connect the adapter to the coupler. You'll need to provide power the wireless adapter as well.
For the Pioneer radio set the settings to HDMI connection type for AppRadio Mode, pair the Bluetooth from phone the radio and go to your display settings on your phone and connect to the wireless adapter.
PM me if you need more help.
