ART on Moto X - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys, since ART will become the default runtime when Android L arrives, can I test it in my device already? Are there any known risks?

Some apps may not work, if you find any of your apps don't, just turn ART back off.
On the 2013 Moto X Art IMO slowed the phone down a little.

All working fine here.

All working fine here with ART.

I run ART on the 2013 Moto X and have since just about day one. Not many apps are incompatible.

[Q] Why flash a CM/AOSP ect (non stock rom) on Moto X?

So this may sound like a silly question, but I don't understand why anyone would buy a Moto X is they are going to flash a ROM that isn't blur based. Don't you lose all the functionality that makes Moto X great? Like the performance benifits of the Motorola X8, the active display, the touchless controlls... even the performance on the Moto X is well above what the tech specs would lead you to believe.
I used to be a flashaholic with previous phones but the only flash I did on the Moto X was a pre rooted stock based rom and I haven't felt the need to go AOSP. I broke my screen and Moto gave me a new one that I just got today ... contemplating what to do with my flashing situation to my new one since I have a fresh start.

I agree I tried PAC ROM and it lasted about an hour and I went back to stock. I missed active notifications and touchless control. I mean the ROM was great very smooth just missed what made my maxx a maxx. However there are people that may not use active notification and touchless control so a ROM is fine for them. I will never put another ROM on my phone I love it stock with xposed and gravity box. To me its the best of both worlds. And gravity box is updated every week or two with new features so it never gets stale. To each their own that is what i love about android there is something for everyone unlike apple which is take what we give you.

Haha yah I know what you mean. Thanks for the reply! I was wondering if I was missing something like the features could be installed into CM or something but I guess I'm staying Blur On previous moto phones I always flashed CM or something similar I hated blur ... but the Google owned Moto X Blur is really AOSP with some nice features on top taking advantage of the X8.
EDIT: Also I was reading about Gravitybox as you replied to this I do think I'm gonna install that.
Gravity box will give you all or most the features of the custom roms and let you keep the Moto x features.
Sent from my N5 cell phone telephone....
Because some people believe that "pure" AOSP (even though custom roms aren't pure AOSP) is the be-all-end-all of Android.
Yea, i used to be a flasholic too whit my previous nexus 4, but I don't know why I just feel great whit the stock ROM of the moto X.
Active display its really great and extremely useful, maybe I will never want to have led notifications again. I want active nots forever In every future phone from now.
By the way, I think we don't need to flash Roms because we have almost native android, and if we use gravity box the result its better that cm or aosp.
THE ONLY TWO THINGS that I really miss are: Halo (PA) and MIUI for the weekends.

[Q] Android update to the Moto X

I was just wondering if there are going to be further updates to the Moto X from 4.4?
Any idea how long they are going to support this device for?
I am betting android L, whatever version they number it, will be the end. And maybe a small bug fix update as usual. ?
I heard it would get "L".

L is already confirmed for the moto x. After that it will be getting close to 18 months old so I wont expect further major updates after that.

Thnks a lot for that; perhaps I need to root and get updates via XDA... I guess its already quite an old phone.

[Q] Why Moto X 4.4.4 (2013) still on old launcher?

Hello everyone,
I am using 2013 Moto X which is currently on 4.4.4 and it is having old launcher where the icons are small etc.
My wife is using 2014 Moto G which is also on 4.4.4 but got a small update couple of days back in which the launcher got updated to the google now launcher where the icons are big and swiping to the left brings up the google now page.
I know that google now launcher is available on play store but why is Moto X not getting the update where the google now launcher is stock?
Since when is the Google Now Launcher stock on the Moto X?
Ya I know its not stock on Moto X but then again why is it stock in the Moto G (2014)?
It is stock on the 2014 Moto X.
I personally prefer the AOSP launcher over the Google Launcher.
But why don't we get the google now launcher on the 2013 moto x
Will we see if when the 2013 moto x gets android l

You can install the Google Now Launcher in the 2013 X, it just isn't installed by default. This is partially due to the fact that it only recently became available for all on the Play Store. I really think this is all a non-issue since it is available, it just isn't installed as the default as in the 2014 line (X and G). It will likely be included as default with L, but we won't know for sure until the 2013 X gets Android L.

Android 5.0.1 (Pure edition)

For all of those who have the pure edition, shouldn't we already have 5.0.1 update? My understanding was that that the updates on the pure edition should be just like the nexus devices. Is this not the case?
No, updates on pure edition are not just like nexus devices . You've been misled. However, the moto x does get updates quicker than most other devices. Again, however, It all depends on the update.
For instance, I heard/read somewhere that the fixes in 5.0.1 are not needed for the moto x because Motorola had already squashed them themselves in the 5.0 update. So Motorola has no incentive to work on releasing a 5.0.1 update. Take that with a grain of salt. I have no sources, (can't remember where I heard it) but someone may chime in with more info supporting that or rebuking it.
But, no, nexus devices will always see updates first.
There was a second build of 5.0 pushed to the PE, but it doesn't fix the problems with Attentive Display or the ringer volume changes on Moto Voice (among other things).
Well, 5.0.1 hasn't even rolled out for the nexus 5 yet, they're still fixing things. Motorola has already released 5.0.1 for the Moto G, so we can expect it soon enough for our moto x as well, once they finish squashing all the bugs. They need to work on Moto Assist, Moto display etc to play well with lollipop so might take some time compared to the moto g which doesn't have any of these additional features

MOTO X 2014, Android 5.1 Update

Was just searching the net for past 2 days.... as soon as android 5.1 was released, there is not even a single news/ Rumors about moto x and android 5.1, So i figured
Lets Start a new thread, and something or the other is bound to come up!, got my android L update for MOTO X european version from right here so i figured lets start here.
if anyone has any information let us hear it
from what i found, there's some news on moto g running android 5.1, moto x 2013 being considered.
does that mean, we have lost the top priority :fingers-crossed:
i seem so eager coz this 5.1 is REALLY stable, i have got a nexus 6, just updated it... its smoother, some pesky bugs before, nothing now.
~~~~my moto x is suffering from bluetooth audio stuttering , among other bugs.
Did you see any change in camera quality on your Nexus6?
I mean do you think the new 5.1 will make the MotoX able to shoot in RAW and Camera-2 API will now be supported? Because that is the biggest thing which needs improvement in MotoX, and performance boost will be a boon, rest it seems stable on 5.0 as well.
Interesting, i can check it out , if someone can guide me how to .
P.s. the camera sensor itself is older version so don't expect it to be too good, samsung, oneplus one , oppo , nexus 6 all high end devices in latter 2014 use IMX 214 or IMX 240.. which are both 2014 released sensors ... On the other hand MOTO X uses IMX 135, which is released on JANUARY 2013, 2 years old now, Motorola has a reputation for increasing their, profits by using atleast one old part in their fabulous devices (HINT: moto 360, ti processor is sooo old, its parent company stopped supporting it and it drains battery too, could have easily used snapdragon400 but.... moto)
Moto X Pure Edition ( XT1095)
Well I'm searching daily for Moto X 2014 android 5.1 update but I'm not able to find anything. I had Nexus 6 I sold one week before 5.1 update, but I've tried it on my brothers Nexus 5 and its was really fast, especially the dialer app feels snappy now(but that was factory reset so not confident about that yet)..
Would love to hear more about Moto X 2014 android 5.1 update
Motorola contacted people about a week ago about participating in a soak test for the Pure Edition. So far the update hasn't rolled out to anyone.
As @chrisrozon says, there is no oficial release out yet of 5.1 for any victara (xt1095, xt1097, xt1092, etc). What is "out there" is a leaked soak test OTA. It's working but clearly unfinished; it has some serious battery draining wakelocks for some people.
Anyway, as soon as 5.1 is officially released (or after a few days if you're cautious), most people with non pure versions will be able to flash it and use it without reflashing original modem, since the new baseband of the xt1095 has been modified to work internationally. At least in latinamerica many of us could use the 5.1 soak with no baseband modification.
So if you're planning to convert your moto x to pure edition, i advice to do it once the 5.1 official release is out.
Cheers!
Manuel.
