Follow directions, do NOT flash this image. Flashing the image will bootloop you (easily fixed by flashing proper boot.img). You must only BOOT this image. Again DO NOT FLASH IT, I won't help you out of any mess you get yourself into with this.
Unlock your device with Motorola's site
Boot Image
Device will boot up, install su and quickly reboot.
Then install Chainfire's SuperSU from the Play Store
unzip pure2014sb.zip
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot pure2014sb.img
Running up in Moto X Retail BR, Tks
Thanks!!! Now my weekend is complete.

Does this wipe your phone data at all? My phone data was completely wiped when I unlocked the bootloader, so I want to make sure that doesn't happen again.

jcase, awesome as always. You are such a great help to all of us "regular people" here at XDA.
From Droidviews: http://www.droidviews.com/root-motox-2014-pure-edition-with-superboot/
Prerequisites
A Moto X 2014 with unlocked bootloader. You can unlock the bootloader by following the instructions given at Motorola official page.
Set up ADB and Fastboot on your computer or download the minimal ADB and fastboot tool from here (unzip it).
Install Motorola USB Drivers on your computer.
Download the modified boot image by jcase: pure2014sb.zip
Open Settings> Developer options and enable USB Debugging on your device.
Root MotoX 2014 Pure Edition with Superboot
Having taken care of the prerequisites mentioned above, you can now proceed to root your Moto X 2014. Just follow the steps given below.
1. Extract the pure2014sb.zip file and copy the pure2014sb.img file into the platform-tools folder (in case you have Android SDK installed) or copy the files into the mfastboot v2 folder.
2. While the folder with ADB and fastboot files is open, right-click on an empty space and select “Open command window here” option to launch a cmd.
3. Connect your Moto X 2014 to computer using a USB cable.
4. Now type the following command in the cmd window and press the Enter key:
adb reboot bootloader
5. Your phone will reboot into the Fastboot mode.
6. Then issue the following command:
fastboot boot pure2014sb.img
7. When the phone boots up, install su and quickly reboot it.
8. When the device boots up again, go to Google Play store and install the SuperUser app.
Motorola site says my phone is not elgible for unlocked bootloader. Have Tmo pure edition 2014 Moto X. Any ideas?
So for the rest of us that got a carrier phone (not the pure edition) -
I got the ATT one with all the bloat on it. I'd really like to get rid of that crap.
Is there some way I could flash one of the factory gsm images here? via the stock recovery or via adb?

As of now, no you cant. ATT may or may not (probably not) get a bootloader unlock. It probably will eventually get root though, and when it does you can use a root app to uninstall those system apps from ATT. No guarantee the phone will work properly after you get rid of them though, it is possible that some OS modifications rely on parts of those apps.
yeah i pretty much can't wait until i get root access -
i'm pretty confident killing the att bloat isn't going to affect the it- i disabled every one of their apps within 10 minutes of having the phone...
i just wish i could load up ti backup and get rid of them...

Got this phone today with my new carrier.
Ran the pwnmymoto apk.
I made the mistake of downloading the latest update because it didn't seem like it actually rooted my phone(No root).
Spent a good amount of time trying all different aspects of things after encountering the reboot loop.
Flashed one of the Rogers(I'm with Fido) firmwares.
"no valid piv block in sp for system"
RSDlite won't detec the device to try again.
It's MotoX xt1058
What can I do? This whole firmware thing is complicated and I just want to restore to stock and never ever touch rooting with this phone again.

Does fastboot recognize your phone? First thing is forget slapmymoto , you can unlock your bootloader and flash twrp recovery. Second issue rsdlite will only flash your existing carrier firmware with a locked bootloader, flash other sbf firmware requires a unlocked boot loader. Third item is to stop the bootloops try clearing the cache, fastboot erase cache

Flashboot says USB Connected. I assume that's a yes. My computer does as well but only as "motorola phone" likely because I have no real stuff on the phone now. Oh and the computer makes the little "boop" noise of removing a device.
What are the next steps I have to take to fix things? Thanks for the quick response btw!

OK , put your phone into fastboot mode by holding down the power button and volume down button for 3 seconds and let go( must he done while phone is completely off) plug your phone in and open a fastboot screen ( I assume you have SDK) right click and hold shift while in SDK platform tools. I installed the SDK and followed a guide to allow me to use fastboot and other platform tools, but when using "adb devices" I don't have any entries, and when I did the command you mentioned It sticks at "waiting for device."
Seems my phone isn't actually seen by the adb tools.
Follow what flashallthetime is suggesting.
btw, Rogers firmware is correct for your phone as there is no Fido specific firmware.

The command prompt can seemingly now interface with my device. It runs commands but clearing the cache didn't fix the problem. I've ran the command though so if there is a next step...
EDIT: Okay it's charing and I can interface with it via cmd. I can now use RTDlite with it as it's battery is charging. Should I flash the other Rogers now? I have my unlock code for the bootloader if that's what I've got to do first.
Yes, reflash it with rsdlite, this is the version you want - Blur_Version.139.12.36.ghost_row.RCI.en.CA

Last thing would be flashing twrp. Does someone have a link to the proper files?
Now after your up and running, please don't accept any ota if you are rooted, we expect the Rogers kitkat ota soon. If you accept the kitkat ota while rooted and with a custom recovery you will end up in endless bootloops.

I certainly won't be accepting ota updates while rooted anymore. Like I said I didn't think that it had actually modified anything with my system, otherwise I wouldn't have accepted the ota update.
Where can I find the twrp for moto x 4.2.2? Do I flash through rtdlite as normal?

I dont know much about this stuff (def not tech savvy), but I decided to take my bad esn Sprint HTC One (running 4.3) and try to unlock it myself. I was successful in unlocking the bootloader, and I even rooted the device on my own (woo!!!). I was on the last stage of finally unlocking the phone, so I decided to go for it.
I tried to follow these steps to finally unlock my HTC One, but I did not know how to go to /system/app to replace the files (The 'Root Reader' app didn't show /system/app in my phone).
://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2491840
The files were:
HtcOMADM_SettingsPlugin_SPCS.apk
HtcOMADM_SPCS.apk
As a result, I tried to flash the copy files mentioned previously using this video as a guide
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhR4Je4I8yw
I dragged and dropped the copies into the 'system storage' (not into a specific file) and started wiping data in TWRP 2.6 (Im assuming I wiped something that I shouldnt have). However, now whenever I try to boot my HTC One out of TWRP, I get the 'No OS installed..." message and it just just keeps showing the white screen with the HTC logo when I do boot anyways. When I connect my HTC One to my PC via usb cable, it doesnt even show up. I decided to take a screen shot of my files/drives/etc that I used. When I click on the 'instal' button in TWRP, it no longer shows the 'android' folder while scrolling through the list of things. My phone also automatically shuts off when leaving it on idle (TWRP running) for a bit, it doesnt connect to my PC anymore too
What should I do to get the phone working again? Could I unlock it from here or do I have to backtrack or something? I have very little knowledge about this stuff so please try to explain things easily for me lol
You need to relock your phone and run a ruu and to reroot your phone with the latest version of twrp 2.6 .3.0 and supersu 1.9.1 I think but you can check that when you run the ruu in the app store real quick to see if it is the latest version.
On the PC download the RUU
http://dl3.htc.com/application/RUU_..._NV_SPCS_4.38_003_release_348053_signed_2.exe
Connect USB cable to the phone to the PC (keep the phone connected until you are done)
1. Boot your phone to the bootloader (volume down and power on). Go to fastboot option on the phone menu.
2. Now using fastboot on your PC type fastboot oem lock
3. Boot your phone to the bootloader (volume down and power on). Go to fastboot option on the phone menu.
4. Now using fastboot on your PC type fastboot oem rebootRUU
5. Run the RUU that you downloaded. That will put your phone back to stock.
---------------------------------------
To unlock the bootloader:
1. Goto http://www.htcdev.com/ follow the steps.
Install custom recovery
2. Install TWRP. Download http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/m7wls/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-m7wls.img put in in the same folder on your PC as your fastboot.exe command.
3. fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-m7wls.img
4. reboot phone.
Install root:
download http://download.chainfire.eu/351/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.65.zip?retrieve_file=1
copy UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.65.zip to the phone
Boot your phone to the bootloader (volume down and power on). Go to recovery option on the phone menu. That will boot into TWRP. Use the install and install the zip UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.65.zip.

How would I do that? I just installed the HTC 4.2.001 driver to my pc as well
Hey guys,
I have rooted my Moto X 2014 (XT1097) with Chainfire auto root method about 6 months ago and I decided to accept the OTA update I got today from TELUS (22.121.11.en.CA). If I remember correctly I was on 5.0.1 before accepting this OTA.
Now the phone is stuck in the custom boot logo screen that I installed after rooting and even if I try to shut it down, it just boots up and gets stuck in the logo screen.
What should I do? I can access the bootup screen by holding power and volume down.

Let me reply myself so that maybe others can use this info to fix their devices as well.
Step 1: You need to install the ADB platform tools (should be plenty of threads about that)
Step 2: You need to find a system.img and a boot.img to match your needs. I have a XT1097 with TELUS in Canada, so I have found this thread and downloaded the big .zip file (big thanks to Steve-x!). For US people the graffixnyc site has images for XT1095 that you can use. Move those .img files where your fastboot.exe file is found
Step 3: Boot your device in bootloader mode (hold power and volume down) and connect it to your PC
Step 4: Install the images with the fastboot command by typing this in a cmd window
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
Click to collapse
Or in the case of the TELUS image, the system image is split into 7 files ... just flash system them one after the other. Steve mentioned something about the recovery.img, but wasn't sure how to flash that so I did it this way.
Step 5: (Optional) If you had something else installed you will get some errors, here's how to fix them. Boot back in the bootloader and choose Recovery, then when you see the screen with the "sick" Android, keep Power pressed and tap on Vol Up to enter Recovery Menu. Choose to delete data and delete cache. Reboot.
If you used Steve's image you should be booting into TELUS Android 5.0.1, just before the cursed update. You can even do now the 5.0.1+ update OTA. You're back in stock ROMs world
Glad you got it fired up again. I haven't taken the OTA yet myself with my Moto X's, was hoping to get the entire image with Motorola Device Manager.
Le sigh
Man i'm having nothing but issues. I've done everything that i was supposed to do, but i cant get the files to load.
I need to root my G4 on TMO. It's on 6.0 and all I have done is enabled dev options - usb debugging- enable OEM in the menu. I've rooted devices before but it's been awhile. I obviously need to start from the beginning here, I assume by unlocking bootloader. I can't find any thread to start with as they are either outdated or for a different version of Android, or I just couldn't find one. I would really appreciate it if somebody could just link me to the thread/guide I need to be in! Thank you so much if you can!

note it can only be unlock in this versions.. ill place them from oldest to newest 20i-(20p-20q-20r-20v) if you in any of the versions in parenthesis doent downgrade tp 20i... 20i is antirollback V2 all other in parenthsis is V3 you can switch bak and forth from 20p-to 20v.
well you have developers option enabled and OEM unlock
minimal adb. fastboot install it follow instructions. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790
download TWRP from here h811 and h815 same app for both. https://twrp.me/devices/lgg4.html
have 2 copies on in SD card other in minmal adb fastboot folder.
Bootloader OEM Unlock + Root:
Starting with the Android 6.0 20x bootloader it has to be unlocked, sorta like a Nexus, with fastboot. Previously only 'OEM Unlock' had to be toggled in Android Developer settings for TWRP or custom boot images to work.
download superSU
connect usb cable to phone.. then go to location folder of minimal adb.. ezample Crogramfiles/minimal.
then in the folder in a empty space press shift key.. and right click on mouse button . you should see open command prompt from here.. select it.
a new window should appear. enter this command
adb reboot bootloader and see screen for confirmation to acsess phone select yes.
if it doesnt boot into bootloader try command again
once booted youll see small letter on phone screen then enter command
fastboot oem unlock (this wipes ALL data!!)
it should restart phone. and optimize all apps...and bootloader should unlock
do same for twrp.... make sure command name of twrp is the same in the file example command is like this..
fastboot boot twrp-2.8.7.1-h811.img and file TWRP is say.. twrp.30.00 it wont work rename either command or files or both and name it twrp.img same in command. once it boot into twrp .. go to install then press button that says image. so the twrp.img you have in sd card appears/ select it then on next window tick recovery. swipe left to install permanently and you are done. flash new rom or superSU.
hope i make sense good luck

OK, I got twrp installed but the two SU's I've flashed don't work. I have SU installed, it needs to update binaires, I try that but it fails every time. Root checkers say I'm not rooted. I think I'm using the wrong SU zip. Any help? Your guide was great btw.
EDIT: OK, now it says i am rooted but I can't get the SU binary to update. It fails every time and then asks me to reboot and try again. Any ideas?
UPDATE: Ok, the SU binary finally updated successfully! I think I'm all good! Gonna check out some custom ROMS later. Any recommendations?

Hey, even if you can't post a link to the resolution I'd love to have more info! Please either PM me or post a tut, since this looks to be a bit problematic and I'm gonna jump on a freebie from MetroPCS.
Would really appreciate it thx!
Those of you who seek root on the MetroPCS Moto E5 play, I got you
I was working on a simple, straight forward walk through. Maybe just pm me for the details. Would be easier to do it that way being as I'm currently @ work. I can't figure out how to post a pic directly from my Moto E, but if you pm, I'll send you some verification. I soft bricked mine 3 times trying to get it figured out. You know what they say though. 3rd time is the charm. PS, don't flash anything other than recovery!!! The no-verity will cause you to boot loop.
Walkthrough
Okay so here goes keep in mind I cannot post links so mentions of the downloads will be just that, only mentions. The method I used to resinall the os is below. Keep in mind I still had access to both the boot loader and TWRP and that prior to my boot loop no os error I did have developer options and both usb debugging and oem unlock on
How To install Motorola Moto E5 Plus XT1924 Android 8.0.0 Oreo OS
Before you begin, it is important to have all the tools at hand. you will need:
Recharge your phone’s battery well(with more than 70% battery)
Save all your personal data (SMS, contacts, applications, settings, documents, music, photos, etc.)
install Motorola USB drivers,SDK drivers
Download Motorola Moto E5 Plus XT1924-# variant stock firmware
ENABLE USB DEBUGGING:
1. Go to Settings> About phone
2. Find the Build number and press 8 times on it:
3. Return to the previous screen. You will see that a line has appeared: “Developers Options”
4. Press and check “USB Debugging” & “OEM unlocking”
Procedure I used to reinstall OS starts below keep in mind I cannot post links as such you will need to google your phones product/variant to find the correct file, in the case of both the ATT and Metro/Tmobile version of the E5 Plus that is Hanna XT1924-7 and is visible in the bootloader.
Update Motorola Moto E5 Plus XT1924 Android 8.0.0 Oreo
1- Open the folder where ADB and Fastboot are located on your computer & Unzip the downloaded zip file in it preferably in its own directory.
2- In an empty area inside of the unzipped file directory hold down the shift key and right-click with the mouse, the context menu will contain an entry Open command window here:
3- Restart your Moto E5 Plus XT1924 in Recovery mode:
Press & hold the “Volume Down + Power button” at the same time for about 5 seconds

People don't really tell you how to fix the issue so if you still need help getting your phone back to normal
I will help
Every post I have tried has been flawed or wrong or won't work
Sometimes people just post **** and don't think
PM me, i'll help you as well if you need it. What you have to do is download a platform tools folder and extract it because you need to open it and open up a command prompt within the platform tools folder for the restoration of the phone's stock ROM can be successfully flashed on the phone. I have everything you need to get your phone back operational again. I'll even help you root it successfully if you need more help, and i'll help you decrypt it. there's even a successful custom ROM that i'm using now that's better than the others since the others have so many problems booting up or issues within the ROM itself.

I interested in rooting my metroPCS Moto e5 play but I don't really know what to do & I don't want to end up using a rooting program that will mess up my phone or not have at least a little knowledge of what I'm doing. Your post was the first one I came across and I was wondering if you might be able to help me with a little bit of knowledge. Please & thank you, I'd really appreciate it...

If you could help me out with rooting my moto e5 plus I would be grateful I have a question though my baseband version says M8940TMO_32.22.11.69R
HANNAH_NA_TMO_CUST and the Official TWRP app says my device is Hannah so do I use the James varient or the Hannah one is the plus and one is the play correct? Thank you for any help you might be able to give me.

yes, the plus is hannah and the regular e5 is the play...you have the hannah version.
None of this helps me. I unlocked the bootloader tried to install magisk or supersu, but it keeps bootlooping to n/a. I can only get into bootloader and from there to TWRP. That's it. I do have adb access...
