Note 4 vs nexus 6 - Galaxy Note 4 General

So, I'll start with a little history lesson. From when the first nexus phone landed, I pre ordered that, and loved it, until the second nexus landed when I pre ordered that and loved it. Next up, the first note got announced. I pre ordered that, and loved it. I then went off the rails a little, and felt that the note 1 was a little too small, so I sold it and got the galaxy tab 7.7 which I used as a phone, which was fine up to a point, but it became a little bit ridiculous, and I missed many photos because it just wasn't right to pull that thing out for photos... ended up moving on to a galaxy s3, then a note 2, and then my nexus 5.
I again pre ordered the nexus 5, and I love it. I have used it all year and have had no problems. .. In fact, prior to the note 4 announcement, and any rumours of a nexus 6, I thought to myself that the only thing I would change about my nexus, is that I wish it had a 6" screen, and a stonking huge battery.
Then comes the shamu rumours and I can't believe my ears! But, with that said, the premium build quality, and s pen improvements of the n4 seem to have me hooked. It will be very hard for me to not buy one on release day, but I feel I must resist until full details / reviews are out on both devices. Is anyone else torn between the note 4 and a nexus phablet?

if it comes with a s-pen ? i say goodbye to samsung and there broken software tuchsh*t

You used a 7.7 inch device as a phone on a daily basis!?
Anyway like you I am going to wait until Nexus 6 is announced before making a decision, even if the rumoured 5.9" device is just a larger Motorola X I'd probably still get it if it is cheaper than Note 4 and battery isn't crap.

Yeah... I sacked it off as a bad idea... but then I've also done the same with the note 8... and now also have a galaxy tab s 8.4 (but I only sometimes use that as my only device) it depends where I'm going, and what I'm doing. It kills me that Google didn't give the nexus 7 gsm calls

Right...
Anyway, played with the Note 4.. loved it.
As for the Nexus 6, it's just gonna be a bigger Moto X 2 if the pictures are anything to go by.
Not too excited. Touchwiz on the Note 4 doesn't feel as sloppy as it has on previous hardware releases. This feels to be the fastest device Samsung has ever put out. Even though it WAS a demo a unit. Still, much smoother than any other comparable phone on the market.

Played with the note 4 today at best buy. Great upgrade from a note 3. Even got a gentleman to skip the iPhone 6 tobreplace his 5s and get the note 4 instead. Feels great in hand..I also like the fact that the metal trim is painted to match phone color.

Nexus 5 set to continue?

Google have updated their mobile N5 page today.
http://www.google.co.uk/nexus/5
Seems like they're going to continue selling it alongside the new N6 and N9 maybe...
Dig the new wallpaper BTW.

Yeah, a little surprised.
But the page has been updated to tout Lollipop.
Nexus 10 and Nexus 7 gone, but Nexus 5 still there.
I think they will release a phone in that size range be it Nexus 6 mini or Nexus 5 2014/15 or perhaps a new name.
Which is why they continue to support Nexus 5. Kind of like what Samsung does with the 's' and 'note' series.
Is the Nexus 7 still being sold?
---------- Post added at 11:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:19 PM ----------
Nexus 7 is officially EOL so my guess is N5 is here to stay for a while
Nexus 5 looks sexy on that page. Can't wait for mine to look similar
I think they will keep selling the Nexus 5 for quite some time. Signs are all there. The updated page. The updated screenshots with Lollipop, etc.
The Nexus 6 is nice, but it is WAY too big and WAY too expensive for a lot of the people that bought the Nexus 5.
To me, the real interesting question to consider is what will they do next year?
Will it be Motorola again? And will it be yet another 6" size phone? What will happen to 5"? Will the current LG Nexus 5 be the last of its kind?
Will there be a 2015 Nexus 6 by Motorola (since they usually get two opportunities) and another OEM making a 2015 Nexus 5 (please someone say Sony)?
I hate to jump the gun, but it's something interesting to ponder.
Let oppo make a nexus phone it'll be the best.

In my understandings, Google will keep selling nexus 5 as a smaller variant, because lets face it, a lot of people dont want phablet and they know it. Also price is little high (now its top end hardware there, no cut offs like on nexus 5 so thats normal). But how long they will keep selling n5, i dont know, but i would dare to say until next october.

What do you mean usually? Six phones (counting the upcoming) and five tablets (counting the upcoming and the Transformer Prime) is hardly a relevant sample size.
I still think an Apple made (but spec'd internals like an Android flagship) 5in screen Nexus would be amasing.
On the N5 page it says: "5 Made for what matters". This is exactly perfect. The N5's specs are still good and will continue to be "enough" for a while. A phone that just "works".
With this move, Google effectively covered 2 market segments.

Yeah. I don't feel like I need to upgrade to Nexus 6 and I'm happy with that.
But, I still think they shouldn't make 6" Nexus. Instead, they should make an upgrade version of Nexus 7...
Would make perfect sense to keep the nexus 5 available because the snapdragon 800 is easy good enough I wouldn't upgrade to a phone with say a snapdragon 801 my nexus 5 flies compared to my wife's g3 and that's no slouch also I heard the snapdragon 805 is just another incremental upgrade from the 801.

To me Google made the best possible move this year, also with minimal effort. They already had the iPhone6 counterpart on the market with the Nexus 5, at pretty much half the price or less, so now they also have the 6+ counterpart, also for a much lesser price (still not cheap, but way cheaper). They effectively covered all size ranges right now, with both smartphones and tablets. Sure the N7 may have needed a small bump in specs, but for what it is, a cheap entry level mini tablet, it's more than enough for the kind of consumer looking for something in that range.
aye, I'm buying a 32g black updated one, just as a back up..
I'm not going anywhere from the nexus 5..
I got my phone last month and I'm perfectly happy with it and don't really want the nexus 6. So yeah, they should keep selling the nexus 5 along with the 6 and maybe refresh it next year as a nexus 5 2015 model.

Yes. The Nexus 4 was my first Android phone. I bought one sight unseen and loved it. I ordered a 5 the day it went on sale. For the first time in two years I'm not sure I'll buy the new model. Even ignoring the higher price, I don't know if I want a phone that big. Fortunately the Nexus 5 remains a powerful phone and I can see it carrying me through another year to see if Google rolls out something a bit smaller for 2015.
I'm so happy hearing such good news, because when other manufacturers discontinue support for their products after 18 months Google decided to keep supporting Nexus 5,even beside that it's almost 1 year old now.
That's why now I'm feeling even happier owning such a wonderful device. And really proud of Google's decision.
WELL DONE GOOGLE!
Maybe next year there will be a 5.2" 64bit version of the Nexus 5. After seeing the price of the N6, I decided to buy the N5. (again)
I wish Google wasn't being so quiet regarding their inventory. Was going to get a 16gig model for my wife and was hoping for a price drop. While the price drop seems unlikely now I would at least like to know when more will be coming in.
Anybody notice the Yellow Nexus 5 in the background of the pictures for the Nexus 9 keyboard case??

Note 4 or s6 or note 5...

hey guys, i have a galaxy s4 for about one and a half year, and i plan to buy a new phone, the thing is, i really like the NOTE 4 design, battery, big screen, but it has some lags, and i like the S6 fresh ui, its smoother than all samsungs, and the style is really nice, i dont know what to get, i know that when the NOTE 5 comes out it will have the S6 ui and the NOTE 4 battery and screen, but i dont know if i should wait or get something now, because if i wanna get the NOTE 5 i have to wait for more than half a year.....i appreciate your advice....THANKS

Ya if you don't mind not having a removable battery or expanding memory cause there is no sd card slot. Don't listen to this guy. Go with the note 4 if you don't wanna wait also lg g3 is a great phone. Depending on what carrier you are on will depend on The development for the phone

note 5
I've had all 4 and I cant see myself stopping at the 4
Note 5
Wait for the Note 5. I had a GS4 from launch day in April 2013 up until the Note 4's launch day where I then got the Note 4, I skipped the S5 and waited the extra months and when I got the Note 4 the wait was worth it:
The battery life
Design
Build quality
SPen
Incredible camera
The best display on a mobile
Etc...
I am now happy with my Note 4, the S6 looks like a super downgrade from it,and will get the Note 5 later this year when I open another contract package for my 2nd line.
THANKS guys, i dont mind lack of sd-card as long as i get the 64gb version, but the thing that killing the S6 for me is the screen size, its not small but i have a 5 inch screen now so its not much of an upgrade, and the glass at the back is not the best solution if you drop you device once...maybe i'll check the lg G4 when it comes out....
I have a Note 4 (930F) and i would trade for a S6 edge if someone wants! S6 its the most beautiful phonne ever made

Personally I don't see a major difference between the S6 and Note 4 when it comes to usability other than the fact that the former lacks many of the functions of the latter. Doubt you'd be disappointed with either one. If you prefer VR however I'd suggest waiting for the Note 5 in case it ships with a 4K/UHD screen as the current one isn't sharp enough to eliminate the screen door effect. Highly recommend getting a Gear VR regardless of whichever phone you end up picking.

i do not care about the VR, i want a big screen with smooth ui and good battery, all the time i thought that HTC will come with something special but i was wrong, they used the same device from last year but with a better camera...and lg flex 2 lags a lot with lollipop, its like this year there is no choice but to pick the NOTE 4 if you want a big screen, but i know that samsung is lazy, they wont update the NOTE 4 ui to look like the S6 before the NOTE 5 comes out, and thats an issue...

yeah but its too far...
i've had an S2 and wanted to buy the S5 when it got out, i wasnt really amazed by it. Compared to the S4 it had ip67 waterproof, better camera, bit better screen but nothing extraordinary , and its still made of plastic.
I decided to wait it out then i realised the note series existed and i was sold immediatly when i saw the amazing note 4 it feels so nice, battery is awesome, screen is awesome, just everything is awesome about it.
If i were you, i'd wait for the note 5 if you can, like you said the nice UI from the s6 will come to N5 too + small upgrades like camera etc and maybe/probably even a note5 dualedge, so why not wait?
I had to buy a new one as my S5 was nearly at the end of it's life, i couldn't trust it anymore but if your s4 works fine, wait it out
Okay, so I'm in the same boat. I'm using my gf S3 because my S4 jumped from the shelf (literally) and commited seppuku, thus needing a new phone badly. Can anybody point the pros and cons of the Note 4 vs S6? Thinking of getting the S6 64GB but the lack of SD card and removable battery (as well as glass backpanel) are negatives in my book. Is the performance/no lag and screen quality really improved? Also, Wolfson DAC in exynos is a plus for me, being a musician and listening TONS of music on the go with headphones. Getting the Note 4 exynos isn't an option for me.
Thanks in advance!
It's the usual tech dilemma. Buy now or wait for the next big thing. There will always be a "next big thing" just around the corner. Buy now then kick yourself down the road when the presumed and currently unknown N5 comes out. Or suffer phone envy until it comes out. I passed off my S4 for a Note 4 because I wanted an S-pen. Not sorry I did and don't expect I'll be mad at myself for not waiting.

Purchased N6 but requesting return... Good decision?

I'm coming from n5 and really wanted to upgrade to n6p until I saw the price! This is one of reasons I didn't upgrade to n6 when it was released last year, the other being that it seemed too big!...
I recently purchased n6 64gb for about £200 from rakuten (£200 as got £80 worth of points)... I'm a tinkerer and love timely updates to OS when Google releases new versions and hence why I really wanted you stay with nexus, plus the fact that there's more development for nexus devices than any other devices...
I've requested a return but not received the RMA yet... I was probably going to stay with n5 until n6p prices come down or buy either moto x style or g4 whichever received timely Android 6 update...
Any advice / suggestions welcome ? Am I going to regret sending n6 back especially considering the price (my main reason for sending back is the size... Seems like a spade in my hand and I've had a look and no other manufacturer has released such a ginormous phone recently... Even Google played safe this time with 5.7")...same as note 5!...
Also, as current owners of n6 what would you say about the size? Have you learnt to live with it or do you love the size that any smaller you would find hard to accept?
ginormous.. its all related to how you personally see the world. i had a n5, bought a n6, grabbed my n5 3 days later and it felt way to small. i im not a big person. im 5'7", with medium small hands. and the n6 feels so perfect in size.
I love my n6. I will get the n6p for no reason when it goes down in price. My n6 was 300. Oh yea I will be giving it to my sister and keeping the n6p. I would keep the n6 if I was you. For the reason that there is not one phone out there like it. This phone is so unlocked unblocked. You can never stop doing so much to it. Hopefully n6p is as equal.
I had a nexus 6 then I jumped to an S6 then Note 5 and now I'm back to a Nexus 6 if that tell you anything.
N6 was only "Too big" for about 2 hours. Now it feels so normal I think all other phones are to small. But I do think that n6 is the maximum size phone for me.
Many thanks for all the replies...much appreciated. Going to sleep over it but looking more like I'll be keeping it now ????
I came from a N5 about 2 weeks ago. Always felt the N6 was too big, but after the recent price drops on it at Amazon I bought one... 2 days later I got used to it fully and now love the size. Even my wife who is tiny, is starting to like the size of the phone. I loved the N5 but at this point I feel the N5 is just too small now. I love the N6. But I get that the N6 is not for everyone.
I've used the N6 off and on since February, and I still feel it's to big, sane as the Xperia z ultra I had. Note 4 was a better size, though somewhat awkward to hold for me. My bit to small, but i I'm switching back to it when ever my brother sends it back to me. I was going to get the N6P but I think I'll wait a bit, maybe get the Xperia Z5P.

Similar but not exactly same... Note 4 about 5mm+ smaller in length and width and does not feel as big as n6 (I purchased note 4 about 6 months ago and it turned out to be fake so sent it back to fleebay seller!)...
RMA paperwork has come - decision time!!!!!
I am get used to the N6 size in just a few days, came from N5.
And now, I cannot have phone with smaller screen size.
5.7" is OK, but N6P is ridiculously expensive right now. So, I am holding not to upgrade. Besides, N6 is still decent, great performance, great battery life (even better with Android 6.0)!

Right I think I'm keeping the phone but before I start messing about with it I need to know what to check to ensure I don't have a faulty phone or refurbished unit sold as new as I've read in a few places...
Any common problems to watch out for please?
Thanks
speaker distortion, yellow tint, half screen glitched, loose speaker grill, peeling letter on back. there are probably drive I forgot. you can search earliest threads in Q&A I think.
well i recently bought the Nexus 6, and i love it to bits.
i always was a Sammy fan but i got sick of the source codes not being released for the Exynos models of theirs... and their latest Phones s6 etc. are kind of locked completely so i made a jump to the Nexus 6 from my Note 4 which i still have,
and damn even though the Nexus 6 is bigger it feels so much better than my Note 4, and the bigger plus point is the Custom Rom section it got loads of Roms.
i even think that it looks way way better than the new Nexus 6p , it depends on you and your wallet in the end though.
i would suggest keeping your current Nexus 6 simply because it is a beautiful beast , it rocks.
my only minus poiint is that the battery is abit disappointing .

Thanks - Just like you I was a big Sammy fan until I tried a Nexus 4 and instantly loved the speed and experience...and not long after decided to purchase Nexus 5 which i've nearly had for two years and still loving it...but wanted a change!
I was going to give Sammy another go with either S6 or Note 4 until I saw their ridiculous prices and lack of memory expansion not to mention swappable battery (though this would not bother me if the manufacturers use a decent size battery!)...and thought nah...Sod Samsung for their arrogance, they wont get my custom!

Going from a Note 5 to a Nexus 6, am I crazy?

I just got a nexus 6 via prime day warehouse deals for 185 shipped with nj tax. Phone looks brand new just one minor scuff by the charging port, came with the box and turbo charger. I currently have a note 5, am I crazy for going backwards to an older phone ? I used to love flashing my old LG g2 and God forbid my thunderbolt and the og nexus. I'm on Verizon so that's a big no no on the note 5. I really like the note 5 but something is just missing being so locked down. I ran antutu back to back on each and the nexus actually scored a couple thousand points higher like 78k vs 74k yet quadrant shows like 15k for the nexus and 36k for the note. What do you guys think?
Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
The Nexus 6 is an amazing phone, best I've ever had. However, if I were to be in your position, I'd hold off until the next line of Nexus' arrive as this will be a 2 year phone. Or if you're on a tight budget, and not in a position to pay $400+, maybe get the 6p as it's price would've dropped.
Still, anything is better than touchwiz
I switched my Note 4 for a Nexus 6 - do not regret the choice at all.
I would have looked at switching a Note 5 for a 6P. Or held out for another 2months for the new Nexus though.
Lol thanks aroy97 I don't really mind TouchWiz, I was just fully lg'd out after the g2. It's hard for me to send this n6 back after finding the deal I got. I've been eying the 6p's as well but yea too rich for my blood right now and I really wanted a step up (although the plain nexus 6 is only minor) in screen size from the note.
Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
I had nothing but Samsung devices all the way up to the Note 3. I made the switch last year to the Nexus 6 and no regrets. Timely updates and can flash at will...even though I just stick with DavidH latest stock. I did not mind touchwiz, just over all the locked down BS.
On a side note I seen the Att & VZW S7 has root.
No your not crazy at all. This phone is fantastic. Stock Android & crazy loud front facing speakers blows any Samsung away. I wouldn't get hypes up over benchmarks as there pretty bogus anyway. It's the day to day performance that matters. Ease of use, everything working and user interface fluidity that matters. This Nexus 6 rocks in those areas. Sit back and enjoy being blasted with these speakers. $185 you will love it.
Thanks guys I'm keeping it just ordered a case! I was contemplating selling the note but I'll prob just hang onto it in the mean time as a backup or to switch to down the line. I upgraded the n6 to the latest android n preview last night and am digging it so far! Will be flashing something soon.
Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
Stock Android > Touchwiz
Amount of ROMs, kernels and other development on the Nexus 6 > Samsung
Monthly security updates for 3 years and guaranteed OS updates for at least 2 years > Samsung's update policy
You made a wise decision.
Not crazy! I have a Samsung S7 and iPhone 6S and I just popped my sim out of the S7 to my Nexus 6. I came here for instructions on how to flash back from the N preview to Marshmallow when I saw your tread (you tend to lose your crack flashing skills when using locked down phones). The N preview is wonderful but I want to get back into more custom ROMs and tweaks.
My only regret is when I take the Nexus 6 outdoors in sunlight. The screen is so washed out compared to my other smaller heavy hitters it becomes a showstopper at times. But I'm seriously thinking about buying a new Nexus this year and bypassing Note 7 and iPhone 6SS. I feel that it's too late to jump on the Nexus 6p bandwagon so I'll just wait.

I can't find an alternative phone to replace my beloved N6

I've had this phone almost 2 years now. It's a beast, I love the big screen, it's fast and it's pure android. The other day I was thinking if it was time to replace and upgrade to a new phone and did a bit of research. I have a budget so nothing too fancy or any latest releases. So had a look at Mate 8, Mate S, Huawei P9, OnePlus 3, Lg V10, even 6p.
To be honest nothing wowed me. Similar specs, maybe few plus sides but nothing made me go 'ok that's it'. Maybe the fingerprint scanner but I'm not fussed really.
So anyone in the same boat let me know if you've find any good alternatives or are you waiting for Pixel phones. I'm interested if anyone else is looking for an upgrade.
My other option is to wait another year once the Pixel phones go cheaper and upgrade to Pixel XL.
So let me know what you guys think..
Cheers

I don't really have high hopes for Pixel XL really. I reckon if I want to upgrade 6p is going to be my choice as the price will drop once Pixel is launched.
I'm in the same boat as you, I really wanted to upgrade to the Note 7 despite my hate for TouchWiz, but there are launchers to fix that. Until that whole battery explosion fiasco happened around the same time my contract ended so I decided to hold off for the Pixel phones. I guess I will know for sure next week, if the Pixel lineup isn't any good then I might get the Note 7 or S7 Edge.
If not I could wait for Samsung's new galaxy lineup, which will be announced early next year

That explosion thing totally put me off too. I don't think I can afford a Samsung at the moment anyway looks like my best bet is either wait for next year and buy cheaper Pixel XL or buy 6p now and use it next 2-3 years.
The 6p is pretty nice. I have a N6. Got a 6p used. I like good audio for podcasts mostly. I watch hours of video at work. Both running Pure Nexus. Very snappy. Its a tossup . I like them both equally. Got a 5x for the kid. She loves it.
there's nothing coming up that I feel is an upgrade across the board, I got the shamu on launch day and was also expecting to pick up a pixel but its been a let down so far with design/specs/price
I'm thinking maybe catching a 6p on fire sale price around thanksgiving or new year, or going with the cheaper midrange chinese oems(oneplus 3/saxon 7) depending on development support
all meh choices so there's a good chance I'll stay put with this device into next year

Op3, it is dev friendly. If is true that the new pixels will kill the nexus line, I think that I must give a prize to a company that is close to developers, no locked bootloader or similar bull..it

Why replace it? If you want new device, keep your beloved N6 and buy new one someday I personally can't live with only one phone, there are too many awesome devices out there (in my opinion). But if money is the problem and you need to sell N6 in order to be able to buy a new one, then it's a whole different story and understandable
I can't anything that wowed me like my n6. I would like a op3 but with the lack of band 13 for verizon, and my area is covered with it. I'm stuck with verizon for the most part, only have coverage with most of the rural area I live in. Sprint roams off verizon, the nearest tower for tmo is 15 miles away and I live in the mountians. ATT has the 2nd best coverage, but doesn't have service in my house, and it a lot of areas I go to. I used to be a samsung fan until they started with the knox crap, after my s3, I have never had an samsung device again. I was a fan of Motorola, until Lenovo took over. Looks like I'll be sporting my n6 for a while. At my work, I've actually been pushing the n6 for people to buy them lol

That's exactly what I had in mind. But I'd rather to grab a 6p around Xmas time then a cheap Chinese device

The Nexus6 P works a treat on XDA development and has longevity in its gene's!

Cheers

Well, my phone buying pattern has been like this;
Palm Treo 650, 2004
HTC Dream ADP1, 2008
HTC Vision, 2010
Samsuck Relay, 2012 (first and LAST samsuck I will ever buy)
Nexus 6, 2014.
Note the pattern: update when there is something WORTH updating to. For a little while, that was a 2-year cycle. THIS cycle will go longer, since this N6 is still perfect. Should have seen the condition of the palm treo when I was done with it -- the lots-of-pins plug was removed, had a capacitor sticking out the bottom of it, and a custom charging plug, a couple of resistors soldered onto the inside near the battery. That 2004-2008 range was REALLY desolate, sure wasn't going to buy RIM or FRUIT junk.
I will be buying my wife a Pixel XL to replace her N5, and sticking to the N6 for myself. Why? Well the pixel XL will have a better SoC, but not *so* much better that it will have ANY impact on my life.
As far as the 6p goes, straight across the board, it is either equal or LESS than the N6.
Screen: less
RAM: equal
CPU: less (the SD810 is definitely NOT as good as the 805, it was just adequate for them to be able to bump the number to say "64bitz!!!", which won't actually do any good in a phone).
Not that the 6p is a terrible phone or anything, but I already have something slightly BETTER than it, so it would be stupid to get one.
Actually, my N6 recently suffered a... mishap. Got some impact thanks to a 2 year old, that even with a ballistic maxx, caused a couple of cracks in the digitizer, and SHATTERED the AMOLED. Yeah, it was worth buying a new screen for it. TOTALLY worth it.

I'm in the same boat, was kinda waiting for the Lenovo Phab Tab 2 Pro, but it has been delayed till 'this fall'.
Don't want to go back to much in screen size, so i'm undecided for now....
