Why would you want an unlocked bootloader with the OTA stock ROM? There is no way to relock the bootloader and regain your warranty.
CM is Android 2.1, just a better, faster version.
If you are concerned about OTA updates, the features are generally included in Cyanogen's ROM immediately upon release, but usually far before any OTA release.
No big reason why I want to right now but I like knowing there's a way to get back to stock in case something goes horribly wrong and I mess something up (and for the same reasons some of us reformat our computers often). I don't even notice a huge difference (speed and battery) running CM. I haven't installed many apps or themes though.

That's different than the stock rom, right? Is it possible to be unlocked and run the default rom that comes with the phone? Or is that combination not a possibility?
Sure you can do that, but I guess I just don't understand why...
You can always go back to stock everything except your bootloader will remain unlocked (unless someone finds a workaround or hack)
Anything you can screw up (except a bad radio flash) can be fixed by having an up to date Nandroid backup...
Just do what I do and make sure to Nandroid every other day or so. (Or before every time you change anything in the system/framework/boot/kernel etc.)

If i were going to sell the nexus one some time in the future, it would be good to know where the stock rom can be found. Some people don't want to be flashing ROMs all the time, and would prefer OTA updates. Once the phone is over a year old, the unlocked bootloader will be meaningless.

Hi folks, as you can see I'm a new poster here and looking for guidance from the wise and experienced!
I have a Milestone A854 for use on Cellular South and I was reading that there is a new stable Cyanogen update for use on Milestones. (The one found on "android.doshaska.net/cm6")
In reading through the forums I've been attempting to piece together the steps it would take to safely go through a process of backing up my current phone (rom/apps/settings/etc.) and then updating to this new rom. To be honest, I feel a bit lost here and was hoping someone with previous experience wouldn't mind taking mercy on me and linking or writing up a step by step guide on how this can be accomplished. My phone is running firmware 2.1-update1, the kernel version is 2.6.29 and is totally stock outside of using ADW and some downloaded apps.
I understand this is kind of a big request and I apologize for that. Truly my biggest concern is ensuring I have a good backup of the phone just in case I had to completely revert to a "safe image". I don't mind stumbling through the upgrade phase, but I really don't want to mess up the backup phase!
Again, thank you for any help and guidance you can offer to a struggling learner!

first of all wats ur bootloader version?
i'm not sure if the a854 is the same as a853, so i dnt knw if u can actually use CM6. a854 is CDMA if i'm not wrong? a853 is GSM.
if a854 is CDMA then i suggest you to contact the dev team regarding the basebands and all.

Naresh, thank you for those links. I've been investigating them and working through stuff. I have had a hell of a time getting a good backup of my current phone but think I got one. I was trying to use ROM Manager but it would never perform a backup until I swapped it to the SPR mode where I was able to do a manual nandroid backup.
So now onto trying to load a new ROM. Wish me luck!
Well I can now report success was achieved finally!
Thank you Naresh for the pointers on Droid roms being compatible with this model. Sure enough, I was able to get the latest Cyanogen on BuglessBeast working on it with no real problems.

First you need to "root the phone" which will allow you to start the process. Rooting will not affect the current stock rom adversely. Get one touch root from the market and run it. Get Rom Manager and use it to back-up your stock rom. You will always be able to return to it if needed. Now, if you get the paid version of Rom Manager it will allow you to download, back-up and install CM roms and others. I am currently running the GimpSource Rom ASOP on an
Alltel A854 Milestone and I have absolutely no issues. All fuctions are perfect , wifi, GPS and themes are available.
I have had my Bionic for a while now and have been thinking about rooting it. I finally got the ICS update but have been using GO Launcher too much to even notice it. Anyway, like I said, I want to root my phone. I am current on all updates. For some reason it's running at a tenth of it's memory tho not much is running that I can see. This leads me to believe there's things running in the background that I can not see. I am reluctant to get rid of all my apps, but I also don't want anything that's eating all my resources either. I kinda want to start new but kinda don't. I guess I just don't like letting go of anything.
I know this is selfish of me, but I am hoping that this thread will stay clean of others chiming in asking about their issues. I just don't want the thread to lose focus since this is about what I hope to get from my phone.
Ok, so here are my questions or favors to ask:
Since my phone is fully updated, do I need to do some other updated steps for rooting my phone or is rooting always the same no matter the build or version?
When I go to root my phone, I back up everything first and then I get it back, right?
I read somewhere that it's possible to brick the phone. What precautions should I take to avoid that?
Can I get all the benefits of a rooted phone without a ROM?
Are ROMs really that awesome that I should get one, or three?
I am interested in a ROM after some posts and pages I read. I was attracted to CM at first but so is everyone else probably at first. Does CM even work on the Bionic? And if it does, does everything work like the camera and Bluetooth?
As I said earlier, I use GO Launcher. One of the things I really like about it is the folders I can make in the App Drawer. Now CM is based off of ADW Launcher, but no options to make folders in the app drawer? Is it possible in any way if I choose CM as my main ROM?
Is CM overrated? Liberty and Eclipse look nice too. I also read a little, very little, about AOKP. Any suggestions? I want to get rid of a lot of extra processes and bloatware but I don't want to lose some of the apps pre-installed like Google Maps and Navigation, etc. Unless there are other, much better replacements that anyone knows of.
I know most of this is personal preference but I am hoping to find a comprehensive way at figuring out what's best for me.
I had more questions but I will wait and ask more as the thread continues.
Oh, I don't really need answers in step by step unless I ask. A simple link would suffice unless it's not covered anywhere.

Ok, I know that SOME of the questions are answered somewhere else. The thing is that after I read one thread only to find it unsolved, I read others that are are 50 pages long going nowhere as well. I haven't seen anything about my phone being fully updated and I am not going any further until I know for sure from someone like a DEV that I can.
Some of these questions are yes/no questions, which wouldn't take long at all to answer, maybe even less time it takes to write a complaint about my post. I certainly don't expect one person to write for an hour on every topic I asked about. I thought it would be a collective effort.
I guess I will take this slowly.

1st question . No, your phone is not special since it is updated what worked for others will work for you.

3rd . Since you are stock. I would suggest using Verizon's back up services. TiBu requires root. IMHO I wouldn't bother because Google automatically backs up contacts and most roms require you to do a full data wipe.
There is no magic formula to keep from bricking your phone. Just follow directions and if you can't tolerate the risk don't do it.

Also I found an article named "Learn How-To Root, Custom Recovery, Backup, And De-Bloat Your DROID BIONIC" while searching around for ROM ideas and such. Anyway, after reading this, it almost seems as if I don't need to do factory reset. Is this ok?

Just last week I started with a stock ICS Bionic and followed this guide to root: http://droidbionicroot.com/droid-bionic-root/how-to-root-ics-on-droid-bionic-and-motorola-android/
That went very well. I wanted to try out JB 4.2.2, so I installed SafeStrap and an official CM 10.1 nightly. The net result was that I had a very unstable phone until I did a factory reset . As of this writing, however, it's behaving extremely well. YMMV.

Ok, so you flashed the ROM, didn't work so well, then you did a factory reset. Doesn't a factory reset wipe the phone? If that's the case, doesn't it wipe out the ROM?
Oh one more thing. Following this link, does this wipe the data from my phone? Anything I should back up before doing this? Should I do any updates before flashing CM 10?

No, a factory data reset doesn't wipe the ROM, but it does require running the initial setup (as if you were setting up a brand new phone).

You definitely want to back up everything you're not willing to lose. I ran a backup the very first thing after installing SafeStrap, and it was a good thing because with all my messing around I managed to bork my stock ROM to the point that it wouldn't boot. Fortunately, all I had to do was restore it from a backup.
My phone on CM 10.1 had enough issues with freezing and crashing that I decided this morning to try a different ROM. So far, I've had really good results with Icarus HD (a custom ICS ROM). I really don't know if my experience with CM 10.1 was typical.
OK, so I want to root. Now does rooting wipe any data? Regarding Safestrap, I install that first before rooting?

1. SafeStrap is full recovery only. Use Titanium Backup for backing up apps and data.
2. Flashing a ROM won't do anything to your external SD card.
3. When you set up ROM slots, you'll be asked how much room you'd like to allocate for data. The choices are 1, 2, or 3 GB. I started off allocating 3 GB to the stock ROM slot and was never able to load more than 3 separate ROMs before I ran out of room. I'd start with just using 1 GB for data.
4. Each ROM is an island. You have to download the apps separately (unless when you go through the initial setup you tell the system to restore apps and settings from the Google servers.)
Cool. I rooted and got safestrap but it's version 3.05 and not 3.11. Some ROM I was interested in said must have 3.11, which I am assuming that's the newest one so far. I did watch a tutorial about getting the current version, so no question there.
So the ROMs are separate islands and during flashing they can be in slots allocated up to 3GB. Does that mean that's the only amount of storage I can have when running that ROM? Say I like taking lots of photos and didn't save them to my external card, could I essentially run out of space or is the storage allocation just for the ROM itself and any updates it may have?
Sorry about these series of questions, just want to make sure I am doing it correctly in case I might make a mistake for future's sake.
The storage allocation is for the ROM, apps, and data that haven't been assigned to the external SD card. You can definitely run out of space if you load several ROMs and don't save any of your data to the external SD card.
Also, keep in mind that when VZW sends the OTA update to 4.1 next week, the only way to keep root is to root in ICS and use Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper to protect root before you take the OTA. If you flash the system image, you will lose root, and there is no known working root exploit for the Bionic JB release.
Lost Root
Hey, I used Voodoo before flashing the 4.1 update, but forgot to update the binary beforehand, and therefore lost root. Anyone have any luck yet with an exploit for the OTA?
And there's no working FXZ before this now, correct? This software is now the earliest version I can FXZ to?

Not root exploit yet for bionic JB. And if you try to FXZ back to an earlier version, you will brick your phone.
OK, so I rooted, got safestrap tho still not updated to 3.11, got TBU (free), got Voodoo. I had to race the clock today cuz it was updating android, or at least downloading the update. The root process I used gave me SuperSU and didn't tell me the version for the SU binaries. I searched around and all I could find was info on SuperUser in regards to backing up root. I uninstalled SuperSU, kinda. I just told it to use a different SU cuz when I used SuperUser and updated the binaries, SuperSU wanted to update them, then I opened SuperUser and the binaries reverted back. I was worried so I just told SuperSU to use a different SU. Was that ok? I didn't update to JB yet. Has there been luck with the Bionic using voodoo and keeping root after the JB update?
All this back and forth means I'm making a full image backup, then trying various ROMs. I've tried CM10.1, too many issues (no car dock, trouble installing lots of apps, no speakerphone). Next is... Whizzed Bean?
EDIT: Seems Speakerphone issue was fixed in the 0420 nightly. Will have to try it again.
AND I copied all the backups to my PC, so I can restore them at will (provided the phone still boots, that is... )
If I can't find a JB ROM I like I guess I can do HouseofBionic reflash (which did NOT cause me to lose data, as I upgraded to ICS that way) then allow the JB OTA to go through.
*sigh*... So much bull**** in these updates.

WB is a fork of CNA (codename Android) 4.1 JB (which is itself based on AOSP)
while Synergy is a fork of the standard Moto ICS (.246).
Yes, they look identical because they both used the Samsung UI elements.

There is no stock kit kat firmware available. You should restore your backup you made before installing a custom rom. If you stupidly forgot to make a backup of your 700 dollar phone you can go to bestbuy and have them flash it for you. If you want a slightly modified stock rom checkout urdroid in the general section.

This is kinda unfair to OP. I killed my phone and end up in BestBuy because SS failed to restore the original back up. It worked a couple times after I've tried custom ROMS but failed eventually and the phone get stuck in a "Note 3" screen. So everything could happen.
I'm sorry if anyone took that as a personal insult as that's not what I intended. It's meant to be more of a wakeup call. As more and more people jump into android and write tutorials, more and more minor details get overlooked. Like "make a backup before wiping or overwriting". We've been spoiled in the past by being able to flash a stock firmware when we botch things up. But lately things have changed and we have to prepare for the worst. Xda is a development site and not a support site so it's up to us to do the research. It's up to us to make sure there's a way out. It's up to us to know the minor details that fill in the blanks of someone's rom installation procedure. No one is responsible but us!

I agree . This is all new and different what we are used to.
So I finally got me a sweet deal and got a second hand XT1053.
Unlocked its bootloader, then flashed T-Mobile´s 4.4.3 and finally the OTA to 4.4.4, because here in Mexico all I was able to get was 4.4.2.
Now, I want to try custom ROMs, and Ive been reading about the procedure.
As any sane person would, I want a nandroid backup before messing around. Im guessing flashing TWRP will take care of this, like it did with my LG L9, right?
Is it wise to do this on the verge of Android L being ported to our Moto X?
How difficult is it to get the phone to a fully stock state (minus the bootlader, of course)? As far as I know, I only need to flash my nandroid backup then flash the stock recovery. Is it as simple as that?
I read somewhere that flashing custom ROMs messed up with Motorola´s active display/voice control, and I assumed they meant that custom ROMs lacked these features because of their proprietary nature. Am I correct? Or does some kind of unrepairable damage will forever afflict these features, even if I get back to stock?
And lastly, what ROM do you recommend? I´d like the active display feature if possible, guess I can do without it. CM theme chooser would be nice too.

You are right about everything you've mentioned. Good research done for sure! ?
Do a backup with twrp. And yes, you can restore it and flash the stock recovery and you're good for the OTA.
Aosp/cm roms don't have the Moto features. But yes, you can return to stock and have them again. There's a few stick based custom roms that of course still have the features. The other roms, unless something changed, do come with some bugs unfortunately as well.
Most use stock, with gravity box for customizing.
And in case you missed it.... Never try to downgrade from 4.4.4....or you risk your device bricking. You can flash lower version custom roms, cause they won't try to change the bootloader. But don't downgrade stock firmware. Ever. ?

As soon as I read this I rooted my phone, I´ll check a ROM or two before settling on one for daily use, have heard nice things about krypto´s one.
And yeah, there can never be enough warnings, I´ll treat the T-Mobile stock ROM as if it were my very first one.
One question though, the latest version of T-Mobile firmware is 4.4.3 under http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0 so Im gussing I should only use my nandroid backup, right?

Until there's a 4.4.4 SBF, yes. That's the safest bet.

How difficult is it to get the phone to a fully stock state (minus the bootlader, of course)? As far as I know, I only need to flash my nandroid backup then flash the stock recovery. Is it as simple as that?
I read somewhere that flashing custom ROMs messed up with Motorola´s active display/voice control, and I assumed they meant that custom ROMs lacked these features because of their proprietary nature. Am I correct? Or does some kind of unrepairable damage will forever afflict these features, even if I get back to stock?
And lastly, what ROM do you recommend? I´d like the active display feature if possible, guess I can do without it. CM theme chooser would be nice too.

SBF.Droid-Developers.org hasn't been updated in a while, at least as far as the X (2013 or 1st Gen edition) Roms.
Another possible source is -> http://www.filefactory.com/folder/dd05c058d3ff8dbe/?sort=created&order=DESC&show=100&page=1 however, they don't have a 4.4.4 SBF for the XT1053 either.
And you can keep an eye on https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/recovery-images since Moto should post the 4.4.4 SBF for the Developer Editions. Eventually an XT1053 (GSM) and an XT1060(VZW) 4.4.4 should pop up there, whenever Moto finally gets around to it.

Kitkat 4.4.2 xt1053
same phone, problems loading roms
I have the same phone, I also recently got second hand.
Moto x xt1053 (gsm) carrier unlocked, currently in kitkat4.4.2, running Kangakat 2 rom (came with it), unlocked bootloader, rooted and using SuperSU, newest version of twrp like 2.8 or something like that.
I want to load a custom rom but am having problems, downloaded P.A.C. and AOKP (two i have tried to use) for the device msm8960 using there stable versions not the nightlies. Went into twrp, created backup, factory wiped, flashed rom and g-apps, was "successful" no errors but on reboot of phone it gets stuck in boot loop and won't start up. for the P.A.C i was able to get into twrp and reflash my back up, for the AOKP twrp kept getting stuck on that teamwin image and i could only finally access it by having the usb cable plugged into my computer. I am not a noob, but definately not an expert.
So did you have any luck flashing a new rom to your phone? Does anyone have any advice for me? I really would like to try some different roms.

I hate Tapatalk for all the time spent writing a quick reply and its gone.
Anyways, first of all, make sure you have the latest recovery available, I remember back with my old phone, funky installations happened if you weren't on the latest recovery. I recommend philz one, has support for some pesky partitions that sometimes get messed and other recoveries won't back up.
Now, in my particular case, I first upgraded my 4.4.2 Nextel stock to 4.4.3 T-Mobile stock using RSDLite, then took the OTA to 4.4.4, and until then I figured I'd play with ROMs. Have had no issues other than something I've addressed on another thread and I ultimately fixed.
My suggestion is going back to full stock then doing everything yourself so you know what's actually going on.
You'll have to flash a custom recovery and then root it again but with an unlocked bootloader that's ezpz.
Remember never to downgrade (that is, flashing a lower android version than what you currently run) stock official images (such as the ones from sbf-developers) because you WILL brick your phone. People say you can downgrade when flashing custom ROMs but I wouldn't risk it, and I don't really see why I'd want that.
Double check whatever file you'll try to flash, always use stuff intended for your model, and when that's not possible verify if other users with your model have reported it works for them. As per the version thing, I believe the most recent development unified models under the GHOST parameter but take my words for what they are, that is, my view on things, you should always make one for yourself.
Ask if you don't completely understand a step BEFORE doing it, there's good people willing to help you out.
