Odd Xperia Z1 Problems - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys
I have a very serious problem
I bought a xperia z1 a month ago and now its acting
It heats up unusally when I'm playing clash of clans which I've been playing since I got the phone and it also heats up alot when I'm charging then there is my battery which depletes faster when playing clash of clans and not another game I'm frequently playing these days trials frontier and have this odd habit of depleting 9-10% when I turn the phone off and back on again even when typing this thread on My Phone it is noticeably hot and then my final Concern
When I turn my screen off(lock it) the screen doesn't fully purn of its like there is a backlight or Something on its black but with a gloomy glow (you can only notice it in the dark) most of these symptoms came up today but heating problem I had it since yesterday night
There is also another problem I dont know if this is directly related to the other problems but worth mentioning so most of my apps are crashing or lagging (this doesnt happen with my way more intensive gaves like dead trigger my sd card suddently unmounted itself this evening some apps that crash are Cpu-z and shazamand also Sony's stock messenging app
Few additional information I have not rooted but I did update my firmware so I have my Warranty but I live in Sri Lanka where there are no Sony service stations so I have to Ship to get my warrenty which is y I consider it as my last resort so any suggestions that wont void my warranty I'm open for it my cpu temperature is 50 degrees Celsius right now and my battery temperature is 39 degrees Celsius and I took that right now while writing this thread using Chrome my house is know to have some earth problems (I kinda get electrocuted when I touch metal parts of my computer case)
I have latests firmware by Sony which is 4.4.4 it came out of the box with 4.4.3

Connect to PC Companion and do a repair. It'll wipe all your data, but at least it's most likely to fix any issues.

I have no root and I don't think it's a good idea to root now because I still have a warranty and I think I should keep it that way because I might have to send it for warranty if something much more serious happen

Phone shuts down automatically and doesnt start until the battery is removed

Hi, My SGSA I9070 which i bought about 4 months ago is doing some weird ****!
Phone shuts down automatically and doesnt start until the battery is removed and put in again..
after doing that it runs smoothly..
This happens about twice every day for almost past entire week.
Note : My RAM sometimes gets loaded up quickly.. like after rebooting about 200MB of RAM is free which after a few hours is reduced to just 100MB of free RAM..which keeps on reducing further..
I am using a launcher(Next), running stock Gingerbread and have about 90 apps installed on the cell..
Do i need to un-install them? or the launcher? [I dont want to ]
Please help..
You have heavy ram usage. U need to clear that. means remove apps. Next launcher takes a lot of ram. Uninstall apps you dont use ..

u need to root phone to freeze apps. But for convinience, update to jelly bean.. just a seggestion.
Um.. A third party launcher and 90 installed apps..
What could be the problem, makes me wonder...
worked!
I had considered that option before (updating to JB) but have read lot of bad reviews for JB update and since i use next launcher, didnt really matter about the OS..
Any how..
As suggested Un-installed many apps.. some that i didnt need and some i could have done with.. :silly:
but anyway it worked.. :good:
thanks guys for the big help..
Hmm....that's weird. My GT-I9070P on GB could withstand 100+ user-installed apps......
Please help: Samsung GT-I9070 - phone shuts down at 60% battery; Android version: 4.1
Hello everyone,
Hope you are doing well.
I am facing similar issue as nickchets.
I own an unrooted Samsung GT-I9070 (Galaxy S advance). It’s a year and 2 months old now.
Current Android version - 4.1.2
The issue is when the battery is about 60%, the phone shuts down.
Sometimes, the display gets scrambled for a few seconds and then the phone shuts down.
I am attaching some pics of how the phone looks when the display is scrambled for some seconds.
Others, it just shuts down instantly.
In both the above cases, it shuts down like someone pulled the battery out.
The phone doesn't shut down when on charging through AC mains.
I have observed it shut down at 100% charge when it was hooked to my PC for charging.
The issue suddenly started occurring when I picked up my phone 2 days ago.
I have been noticing excessive heating before while playing a game on my phone.
Also (maybe unrelated), someone gifted me a cheap travel charger (the ones that have a battery in them and I can hook it with USB cable to my phone for charging).
I used the same for 5-6 days about 2 weeks ago.
I have tried factory restore via the menu that's triggered by pressing volume up, menu and power button on the phone.
Though the frequency of shutdowns has been reduced, the problem still persists.
I didn't use a memory card but after the reset I've put one in.
As the phone was recently factory-setting restored, I haven't put much apps in (just whatsapp, FB, super backup and click counter).
And not to forget I have apps that Samsung forcibly puts in its phones.
Can this be a battery issue?
Can this be some other hardware issue?
Can this be rom issue?
Is there any app that could determine what’s wrong with the phone is?
Request you to help me on above.
Regards,
Phoebus

Thanks for replying shut_down.
I forgot to add in the details that I had already tried a battery from a friend's phone (same model).
For two hours, my phone's battery was in his phone.. He played songs for two hours.. it worked fine.
I ran my phone on his phone's battery.. my phone restarted twice.
If there is a battery issue, is there any any android app that could let me know that my battery is dead or almost dead ?
Also I read somewhere that trying to spin a mobile phone battery also is a test.. I tried to spin.. it didn't spin.. but applying pressure on one side of the battery seems to wobble it a bit..

shut_down,
Thanks for replying.. its Sunday here today.. no service on Sundays :/ .. will take it to them tomorrow..
One more finding.. it seemed the that the area around the camera was heating up.. I decreased screen brightness to the minimum and to my surprise; its been 2.5 hours now and no restarts.. let me know if this could be related :fingers-crossed: or is just that, God is being nice to me for a while ..
Everyone,
Please feel free to drop in suggestions.. I am reluctant to give my phone to service guys.. its too far away and they would keep it with them for days in the name of "checking the phone and finding the root cause"..

Thanks shut_down and R_a_z_v_a_n for replying.
The code *#0228# works.
Temperature was displayed by the utility. I observed it was between 27 - 32 degree Celsius.
I am attaching some screenshots of the Battery utility.
Request you to help me know how the screenshots can lead us down to cause of the issue.
Lowering the screen's brightness prevented the shutdown.
I was able to take a call for 55 minutes without crashing. The call ended but the phone didn't crash. :highfive:
The phone survived the night and was ON when I woke up.
I increased the brightness and the phone shut itself down as soon as I dialed a number. :crying:
Also another observation, I accidentally dropped my phone from about an inch above a flat surface.
The screen scrambled (as shown in the screenshots attached in my first message) and the phone got shut down.
Please let me know if the above observations indicate towards any causes of the issue.

Lollipop touch and hold quick settings?

The quick settings aren't behaving the same way as aosp, with touch and hold disabled and tapping only toggling the setting.
Even the the mobile data toggle won't open up the data usage counter in the settings page but only toggles on and off. Anyone else reporting the same?
C6902, US stock. 242 ftf flashed in the morning, unrooted.

did you use your phone after the update? it's normally heated up. Settle it first for 5 mins or more until it cooled down.
Regarding with the battery life, from last night after the update, my battery life is at 24% and im using it right now while listening to music. with couple of games like 30min + Clash of Clans and web browsing, i dont find any issues regarding with the battery.

You can just uncheck wipe data It's always a good idea to clean flash an OS update. Oh well.
No idea about contact sync? The overheating settled, but I'll have to see. Overall, really good work from Sony. No Location based Wifi, but apparently they made changes to scanning that makes location based wifi defunct, lol. I only wish the long press on toggles worked as well, but they seem to have removed it everywhere, so no complaints I guess. Camera frame rate has suffered in the new firmware though, not as smooth as it used to be.
That's weird, my status bar and battery stats are always blue. Are they supposed to be different for everyone? Even in whatsapp my status bar is blue...

Battery issue and restoring completely to stock

Hello everyone,
I have been using a Xperia Z1 for around last 6 months and updated to Lollipop 5.1.1 two months ago. Everything was fine until last week when my phone started to get affected by the battery bug.
The phone works fine and the battery gets discharged in leaps. For example, when I use the phone from 100%, it goes down in the usual way, let's say for 1 hour usage it drops up to 90% which is quite normal. But, when lock the screen and keep it idle for sometime and when I take it back, the battery has dropped a leap, usually by 10-15%.
Yesterday, I was using the phone normally and kept it idle for the entire night and battery has been dropped only from 85% to 79% without stamina mode. That's good. However, when I restarted the phone in the morning, the battery suddenly dropped to 18%. :crying:
I tried calibrating the battery, charging/discharging cycles and removing batterystats.bin. But, the issue is still here.
I think my phone has been affected by the famous Xperia battery bug in Lollipop which means that my battery is damaged. But, before replacing the battery is there anything else that I could do to overcome the issue. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
+ My phone is rooted on stock 5.1.1 (14.6.A.0.368) with XZDualRecovery and locked bootloader. If I repair the phone with PCC will it cause any harm or bricking since because of the customer recovery?
Claiming warranty is out of option since the phone has been rooted and flashed with custom recovery.
I don't know why people call it a lollipop bug. There will be a time a battery reaches its end of live. That's what has hit you right now. Your descripte symptoms are from a dying battery. I have seen some dying battery's from me or friends. The battery was holding the charge normally and suddenly no more.
Replace it and all should be fine again.

But, can this happen on a phone that is just 7 months old? Thats what makes me to think that this could be a bug.
I have the same issue, but mine drops to 0% and after waiting some time and booting it the percentage is back up. I have my phone for 2 years now, and the problem appeared in Lollipop also.

It's okay for a 2 year old phone as Lithium batteries wear out with time. In my case, it's kinda disappointing...
So, after searching the entire Internet, I can understand that this is a common issue with Xperia Z1 and Z1 compact and replacing the battery seems to be the only possible solution. I searched EBay for a battery but couldn't choose a good quality one. Can someone guide me on this please?

Your battery is definitely dying and it has nothing to do with roms. Get a battery that the seller claims to be OEM. That's your best bet...

Don't think that it will resolve your problem.
I changed my internal battery about one month ago and when two weeks passed I started to experiment the same bug ? again
It's not only hardware problem, it also software problem, I believe.

You are correct becouse I experience som drops in the range of 5-20% in less than a minute and once 30%. All the time while the phone was in standby mode except once where it did it right in my face (10%). My battery status is reported being fine. I also forced shutdown the phone as per the calibration method for non-rooted phones. Though I did notice dalvik cache wasn't rebuilt and so there is no way to have it refreshed manually except system updates which does this.
Anyway I did remove some apps and did some changes and after this I have not had any sudden drop for weeks. Two of the apps where Truecaller and Facebook official app. Will check though if it was a third one to. I believe one of these or both where playing havok. Especially the Facebook app as it takes liberties I find suspicious, is buggy, can crash the kernel (any app that can do that is doing shady work IMO) and had the addition of a "Video Player" service that was running permanently after you launch the FB app once. I instead use Metal for Facebook now. Pretty much same experience, only 10MB RAM used instead of 90MB and no batter y drain either or any other problem. So in short I believe one of these where the culprits and since many use the FB app that might be the one playing badly with Sony Z1 system.
And If you use Adguard also check if there are apps getting high ratio of ads blocked (or analytics data blocked). Might be some dont get proccessed right in the battery system due to it calculating it wrong. Google Frameworks, Google Contacts, Play Services, Mobilestorage Checker and a few more I disabled the ad filtering for. Though this did not change the battery drop problem previously. It only went away when I uninstalled named apps above.

Can someone make Kernel/Mod with disabled overheat protection? Will donate.

Hello,
recently I bought LG G Watch R and after updating to Marshmallow the watch started turning off randomly, and was unable to boot to the system without being on the cradle. I've read a lot about it on the internet and tried all sorts of solutions, but without success. Then I found that my temperature sensor is giving wrong data. My watch is idling at 50 - 55C and when put on cradle temperature immediately drops to 40 - 45C (overheat protection turns it off at 60C). So is there a way to turn off overheat protection or change the temerature the sensor is reporting with Kernel/Mod? I'll be glad to donate if someone is to make such thing.
Also excuse my mistakes, I'm not an English speaker.
Cheers.
Have you ever found out a solution? I think the most common thing to do is to buy a new battery, but I ordered one from China so it's going to take a while until it arrives and I'm hoping to try to improve the condition of my current battery a little.

Unfortunately, I haven't found a solution yet. I was about to do the same thing as you, and buy a new battery, but then I read a post on reddit about a guy with exactly the same problem as me, who bought a new battery and the result were disappointing.
Do you have exactly the same issue as me? Because I've read about people's watches shutting off but not because of wrong readings of the temp sensor, but rather battery issues.
When you receive the new battery be sure to update me on the situation.
Thanks!
To be honest I didn't check the battery temperatures. Did you use an app to do so, or adb? I will check and let you know... it might indeed be more battery related than temperature.
I had exactly the same issue.
When my g watch r was charging on the cradle it worked flawlessly. When I removed it from charging it turned off randomly, sometimes it managed to boot and stay on even for hours, but most of the time it turned off instantly.
I thought the problem was either on the battery or on the power regulation ic, I didn't think about temperatures.
So last week I've bought a new battery, replaced it, and tada! The problem was the battery indeed!
The smartwatch is running perfectly now, apart from the bugs and the errors of aw2.0

For temp check I'm using app called System Info For Android Wear. You can check your temps to be shure.

I'll try Wear 2.0 and if the problem persist (most definetely will) I'm going to try with new battery. The problem with new battery however, is availability and ridiculously high shiping taxes here in Europe.
I know this is old now but has anyone solved this issue?
I've replaced my battery yesterday but the problem persists. The temperature floats around 50C and it rises to 60 quickly and shuts off if i do anything. Please share if you have a solution. Thank you.
I'm facing the same issue, battery has been changed but still getting hot and shutting down... If anybody knows a solution !
I have the same issue. I replaced the battery, even downgraded from 2.0, but the watch still frequently shuts off. I was able to get it to work for a good while by putting it in the freezer for a few minutes before powering it on.
Edit: its as if the cpu temp sensor has lost calibration, but since the freezer trick works, what about a mod that would move the shutoff threshold a few tens of degrees up?
same for me, it works after having spent few minutes in the freezer and then shuts off

The same thing happened to me, I changed the battery and the problem is still happening.
something new?
This just started happening on my G Watch R as well. Sometimes the heat generated from my wrist is enough to cause the watch to shutdown or reboot from overheating. If it isn't a failing battery, as some of you have noted through a battery replacement, then what could it be?

I am only guessing here but if it happens when you launch a game, it is probably a hardware issue, if it happens after playing the game for some time your phone is probably overheating and shutting down for safety. Try reducing the quality settings of the game and reduce the brightness. You could also try gaming on the medium power saving setting so your phone is not pushed to the max.

I think u got faulty device. Or may be tons of apps are runnin in background and causing overheat. If u're using second hand device, i suggest u to use benchmarking apps and compare to other note8s

if overloading the phone is causing instant shutdown, it may be because of battery. Try replacing battery.

ok bro i will change the battery and thanks:fingers-crossed:
Backup all the data on your device. Try wiping the Cache Partition and performing a Hard Factory Reset. Could be that something went wrong with a OS update.

first i changed the battery and same thing happened then i changed the motherboard now its fine maybe the problem was with processer
Still reckon it sounds like an overheating problem...
Was happening to my PC ALL the time until I cleaned it out and re-seated the heatsink with new paste...
I know it's a little different for the phones and tablets but they are just miniature PC's...
