Send a text FROM Google Voice number in Hangouts - Moto X Q&A

I have searched and searched, and cant find the answer to this. I have Google Voice sms enabled in my Hangouts app but when I go to send a new text, my only option to send a text from is my Verizon number, and when someone sends a text to my Google Voice number, it says "Send an SMS to ... from my Verizon Wireless number". How do I send a text in the Hangouts app FROM my Google Voice number? The little SMS button in the lower left where you switch between Hangouts and SMS does not have an option for my Google Voice number. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Go to settings in Hangouts > SMS > tap on "Send SMS from" and choose your Google voice number instead of your Verizon number. P.s. There is a bug with "smart reply" option. If you choose that then hangouts automatically chooses Google voice number as your default number and there is no way to switch between your number and Google voice number. Unless you do it manually thru settings.

Is it only one or the other, I cant have one conversation on my Verizon number, and the next one on my Google Voice number, and bounce between them without going into settings?

Unfortunately no. At least that i know of. Switching them in settings is the only way around it so far.

*sign* Thanks for the response. I was hoping they would actually let you select which number to use for individual message threads, for those of us that use both numbers. Oh well. Back to the Google Voice app.

GV help...

How do I get the voicemails from people who call my regular cell number to show up un my google voice thing?
naw you can't do that... give your gv to everyone if you don't want to check both the "messages" and the "voice" inboxes...it works out though...e.g., i give my gv number to everyone but my family so the gv inbox stays uncluttered...
yes, its very easily done.
In your Google Voice settings you can add your phone number to the account. You can then 'attach' that phone number (your original) to the google voice number just for voice messages. If you are using sprint there is a specific link in google voice that will send you the number you need to dial in your phone. Once you do that it will be set up. You then just go into your Call Settings and set Google Voice as your voicemail provider.
Done and working here...
Awesome worked great. Thanks so much
ooops misread and thought you were talking about sms !
Edit: actually you can forward those from GV to regular inbox, not the other way around though...
how do i change my voicemail greeting though?
I don't like it when i call and I hear "thanks for calling a google voice mail user" blah blah ...

Why don't you go looking around in your settings and read up on some of the features of google voice?
One of the nicer things you can do is have different greetings for different people or groups of people.
You can do some other pretty cool stuff if you get a google voice number and start using that as your main number.
if you record your name,,, she will say "someonesomewhere" is not available but if you record a totally different greeting then you'll just replace her entirely...
i changed the greeting for the google number..
but when I call my sprint number i get that google message as well....
dmitrian ..I am going to try that right now..thanks!

[Q] launch Google Voice app from the dialer?

I don't know if I'm just very mistaken or what but I swear at one point I had things so that when I held down the '1' button it would launch the google voice app and not dial any number (whether that be the carrier vm or the google voice vm number).
I could have been on stock froyo or some pre-release cm6 when I'm thinking this occurred; it was awhile ago. In the dialer's settings there is a setting for "Use 1 for regular voicemail". Checking it makes it say "Key 1 will be used for regular voicemail" and unchecking it makes it say "Key 1 will follow voicemail handler". Also in the settings is a "voicemail handler" option but my only option is "None (Dial Voicemail Number)". I don't really understand that since I have GV set up for my voicemail in settings>call settings>voicemail service.
Even if I set my left action button to voicemail it's the same thing.
Has it always been like this? Am I just totally crazy that I thought at one point I was able to launch google voice from within the dialer?
As a side note, I use google voice only for vm (I don't use it for sms or as my number that dials out).
Yes you're crazy. Dialing 1 will call GV, not launch GV app.

Google Voice

I'm using google voice for voicemail, but noticed that my buddy that also has a captivate can use his for texting. He's running stock 2.1, and I'm running di11i's v5.6 Stripped (an i9000 ROM). Where his has a compose button to text with, mine has a refresh. Any ideas why? Yes, I'm in the United States and have full Google Voice access.
Have you tried updating it in the market? I'm running a jpy rom and my compose button is to the left of the refresh.
Just uninstalled and reinstalled to make sure, I'm at the newest.

you might have selected your messaging app as your default after installing voice. Normally after you've installed google voice, your first txt message you try to send out via your contacts list. A pop up will appear asking you to choose an app to complete the action. it asks you to choose google voice or messaging, and an option to set whatever app is going to be the default. To get back that option you need to reset the defaults in your messaging app and not the google voice app.
The settings can be found under.
Settings -> applications -> manage applications -> messaging
pick clear defaults then try to send a txt message from your contacts list and you should see the pop up asking which app you want to use to send your txt.
using gv for texting works great, just make sure whoever you are texting has your gv number attatched to your contact because it sends the text from your gv number.
When I started using gv I sent all my most frequent texters my gv number and told them to use that number for me.
This allowed me to drop my text from unlimited to the 200 pack and saved me 10$ a month.

i hope you realize the difference between:
Google voice (for converting messages) and Voice Search by Google (for searching and inputting text into messages by voice like your buddy)
2 different things. and also not to be confused with android voice dialer. which works better as a dialer than google voice search (Which it is supposed to do also but doesnt work properly)
heres the offical youtube vid for what you want.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about Google Voice, the American app & service that us Canadian's don't get to use.
Trusselo, it let's you forward your phone to your GV account and use the Google Vmail service. It opens up a world of options compared to a carrier's vmail services. I have a GV account from when I was working down south this past summer, but you can't add a Canadian number to your account. So, until Google opens up that restriction I can't use my GV account anymore.
GV also let's you, if you choose, have 1 number which rings at any destination(s) you choose. Such as cell, house, work etc and then end up back in your GV vmail. I wish Google would open up the service to Canadians, especially since it was started by Canadians at Grand Central (Calgary company), then bought out by Google and shut down.

I read it as he wants to TEXT from his GOOGLE VOICE account, with the GV app. "that my buddy that also has a captivate can use his for texting". This is a feature of the GV app, if you select it in your GV account.
Ok that is quite possible then, either way, i dont have google voice.
I text by talking.
I use Voice Search by google to do what he wants and cant find.
many people have confused them before.

Voice search can't do what I want at all. I want to be able to text from my Google Voice number instead of my AT&T number. It's mostly for curiosities sake anyway.

I just tried that, and there were no defaults set for the messaging app.
Even on my google Voice web app, there is only a call button. Not a Text button.
I have both a refresh button and a compose button.
Dunno why you don't have both buttons.

[Q] Moto Voice - Check Voicemail

Is there a way to change the number that is dialed for 'check voicemail' on a VZW phone from *86 to my Google Voice number? I have configured Google Voice on the phone as the voicemail service and populated the number, but Moto Voice still tries *86.
Can u say "open google voice" and have the app open? Or you looking for it to actually open the voicemail?
^ I could do that, though I was trying to get it to call my Google Voice number so I could listen to the message. I could also add a contact named Google Voice, I was just trying to stay in the existing framework.

Google Voice & DOK2

Anyone here on DOK2 also a Google voice user?
I am having a strange issue when trying to "Call with google voice".
The call start during the prompt where you choose whether to "call with google voice" or "call without google voice" instead of waiting till you choose one of the options.
Because of this it always calls without google voice.
To all DOK2 Google voice users, your feedback is valuable.
Maybe you should update to Google Hangouts. It works perfectly for both texts and calls. I haven't touched Google Voice since I started using Hangouts.

Oh yeah dude, 100%. When you log in with your Google account, it will automatically use the Google Voice number associated with that account. And you can do text and group messaging, mms, video hangouts, and voip calls all through the one app.

Yeah Google voice # plus hangouts is a great combo.
I can confirm, it dials straight out with your carrier number no matter what option you choose. Hopefully there will be a fix.

Use hangouts dialer. It will call out from Google voice numbers. I use it every day. On newest DOK build.

I understand that. I have a voip pbx server setup. I would like to use the minutes which are allotted to me each month. Using Hangouts doesn't help with that.
I appreciate the reply, I'm just confirming that there is an issue.

R u calling over seas? Using hangouts with a google voice number, has unlimited calling between USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Unless you are running a call center I don't see the need for the pbx server setup anymore.
Using hangouts limits me to just my cell phone. All the extensions in my home are setup with voip.
have some problem too here is a work around for now. https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/voice/7v4o62rCRfI;context-place=starred
T-Mobile - Note 4/5/Edge - Update to 5.1.1 - Error on outgoing calls with Google Voice by setarcoS Dec 1
ADD A REPLY
Original Post: I'm on a Samsung Note 4 that was just upgraded to 5.1.1, and now when I attempt to make outgoing calls, I get "call not sent" and the call automatically gets made with my regular carrier number. I am still able to send/receive text messages, and check on voicemail's.
I tried rebooting, clearing the app cache/data, removing the sim, changing networks and nothing - the same error "call not sent" keeps appearing.
I've been using google voice for many years now since invites went out and never had this issue when changing phones.
Need help figuring out what is going on.
Device: Samsung Note 4
OS: Android 5.1.1
Network: T-mobile network
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Devices affected: Note 4, Edge, Galaxy S5, Note 5
Status: Waiting for a fix.
Work around #1: Connect through Google Voice (via Sheelendra Singh)
Dial your GV number
Hit the asterisk (*) key when the GV greeting comes on (skip this if you set your phone to go directly to voicemail access)
Enter your PIN, then pound (#)
Press 2 to place a call
Enter the phone number followed by pound (#)
Work Around #2: Dial through Hangouts
On your Android device, open the Hangouts Dialer app .
Type the person's name or phone number, and select them from the search results. Or to dial a number, touch the dial pad icon Dial pad icon at the bottom of the screen. Then dial the phone number you'd like to call, and touch the phone icon .
Work Around #3: Dial through web browser on phone (via Nick the greek 123)
1. Go to Web browser on your phone
2. Go to https://voice.google.com and sign in
3. Use the dial key pad provided.
4. When you dial the number google voice will call you first from your google number, answer it to connect to the number you dialed.
Work Around #4: Force calls through (via Steven McDonnough)
1. GoogleVoice has to be set to "Always Ask"
2. You have to set "Power Button" to end calls (Settings -> Personalization -> Accessibility -> Answering and ending calls -> End calls by Pressing the Power key)
3. Once you place the call, immediately hit the POWER BUTTON THEN quickly hit "Use GV". That will end the direct dial from your phone AND enable the GoogleVoice dialer.
Things you can do to help:
Contact T-Mobile and help make them aware of what is going on.
- Ask to be transferred to "tech support department."
- Explain the issue and tell them there is already an existing ticket for this known issue.
For all who call support and they ask you to uninstall, reinstall, factory reset, clear cache, etc. Don't bother. It won't help. These are irrational, standard support scripts used when they don't nearly understand the cause nor the solution.
Log into https://voice.google.com and use the "Send Feedback" link at the bottom left of the page" to help make them aware of what is going on.
Contact Samsung support and help make them aware of what is going on.
If you contact T-Mobile, Samsung, or Google Voice, be sure to mention this thread:
For reference, the URL they need is: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/voice/7v4o62rCRfI/8E2xx0hEDAAJ
And this is the thread in particular: 7v4o62rCRfI/8E2xx0hEDAAJ

PaulisHere contacted T-Mobile and filed a report regarding the issue. They recommended everyone with the same issue contact them and mention this reference number to add them to the ticket: 745440721951644352 (my t-mobile rep couldn't find the ticket as they are normally 10 digits long)
I contacted T-Mobile and they said they are working with Samsung and Google (Android OS I presume) and are hoping for a patch/fix within 7-10 business days.
2015/12/09
PaulisHere opened a new ticket # 14060725
I also have this problem. I don't like having to use the hangouts dialer, but, it's what I have to do for now.
I called Tmo biz class support and as expected they were useless and are pointing fingers at Samsung and GV.
I called Samsung support and as expected they were useless and are pointing fingers at GV.
Contacting Google's support is harder than shouting into a black hole.
Anyone else have any idea about this?
I notice that TEKXodus has the a new dialer that is video calling capable and Google voice works properly.
