I just thought it would be fun to see why people would want to buy a Kaiser/8925. As for myself, the one feature that I really care for is the built-in GPS. I have long been waiting to buy a GPS and this one-device-features-it-all looks very tempting; however, I am still not sure how good this Qualcomm GPS is compared to SiRFstar III types. I guess I will wait to hear from others before I buy this device. What is your reason?
I am not sure why everyone has thier panties in a knot over the qualcom GPS chips running Nimea. I run Nimea on my old Ipaq with a gps sleeve and it works fine. I always seem to get where I am going and back. I get on average 12 sats somtimes more, somtimes less so that is not a concern for me.
I could understand that sensitivity may be a concern, needing to be within a square foot, if you are say trying to guide a missle to a building that is sandwiched between a school and a daycare but for the average guy driving around it should not be a problem or a concern. Anways if you have missles, you probably also have way more soffisticated GPS needs than someone with one built into a phone.
Just my 2 cents.

Well, the thing is, I have never owned a GPS device and from what I have read so far people seem to like SiRFstar III more because it's more accurate (opinions). My statement was solely based on others' opinions.

I like the idea of the builtin GPS but I'm not sure I'll use it. A few iterations back I had an iPaq with a CF GPS and I found the separate bluetooth unit MUCH more convenient. Some of that was form-factor, but a lot of it was being able to have the GPS out on the dash of the car right by the windshield for best signal and to have the display/input right in my hand. With some rental cars, particularly in bad weather the GPS would lose lock when held under the roof in a "normal" PDA-holding position.
Now the SiRFStarIII and later GPS chips are MUCH more sensitive, so maybe it won't matter.... Regardless, if I can get a Kaiser (for the 128MB RAM thank you!!!) I won't give up my BT GPS right away.

Been on the 8125 long enough. Really looking forward to the CPU, ram, camera upgrades as well as the jump to 3G. I skipped the 8525, so it's about the right time. Can't wait!
GPS + Keyboard + it's smaller than my XDA Exec. Plus it's got double the RAM/ROM that the Exec has.
And my contract is up in just over a month.

I have been limping along with the Wizard for about a year and a half now... not too happy about it. Usually my phone tenure is some 6-8 months and I am way long overdue for an upgrade.
During this year and a half I have used the BB 8700 and a SE w810 along with my Wizard but once I left those jobs the phones went with them.
Also, I think the tilt screen is real cool...
If you're worried about the GPS, go ask in the Trinity forums. It uses the same GPS chip.
i like the new functions of this phone, it's a very good upgrade for my MDA Vario 1 (qtek 9100).
i like the tilt-screen-function very much, the faster CPU is a must, and i just love the higher amount of memory!

I am currently using an Hermes. I got a Titan (PPC 6800) a few months ago. It has the same Qualcomm chip (the 7200) found in the Kaiser.
I gave the TiTan to my son and kept the Hermes because it had better sound and better battery life. (I realize that the Titan is a CDMA device and may not have as much batter life).
Have any of you compared the Kaiser and the Titan?
Is the Kaiser really that much better than the Hermes? If so, why.
I'm trying to decide to get the Kaiser or wait for the Omni.

Well despite a slowness problem someone else has reported recently, mine is superbly fast compared with the Hermes. Instant power on from standby, quick opening of power hungry applications like tomtom etc etc. Brightness is better, feels better, better build quality. AND NO lockups and freezing so far - and that's a MAJOR plus in my book. No issues with freezing when on charge etc , in fact it's been so smooth for me that I have not been doing my regular backups (bad practice I know!).
I really am impressed by this device - not just the GPS, but mainly because of the reliability, speed and feel of it. So far as added potential for this device over the TyTn (GPS aside) I'm not so sure that there is a huge benefit, BUT it is a huge benefit to have similar functionality to the TyTn that actually works reliably and smoothly - I feel I can rely on this device where I would not give TyTn 100% trust. (I enjoyed finding work arounds and fixes for the TyTn and got it to a fairly workable state, but the Kaiser is much more of an out of the box working device I think). The one poor thing (so far) that I've found is the slow scrolling in PIE - but only PIE; this feels glitchier/slower refresh rate than the TyTn.
Whther you wait for the Omni is for you to check out
Mike
Mike:
Thanks for the reply. I would like a larger screen so I'm tempted to see if HTC comes out with the Omni Next month as planned. I'll probably end up with both devices.
Have you messed with the GPS yet? Can it work using Google maps without any other hardware or software? Just curious.
Thanks!!!
Just my 2 cents, I have the same raves about the Kaiser/TyTN II. Out of the box it is really hassle-free.
I share your complaint about pocket IE but I find this behavior only in PIE. If you install Opera mini, for example, web browsing is similar to an Iphone experience but much faster. No refresh just smooth/fast scrolling.
I hope MS gives us a major update to PIE soon, It really is starting to show it's age.

Yes, looks like Opera mini then. I tried it on my TyTn but generally preferred PIE layoutwise. It's just strange that PIE should be about the only thing I find slower on the Kaiser. In single column view it scrolls fine until you start to get further down a page and eventually it all but seizes up. Still, as you say Opera Mini is smooth scrolling, I'll be very happy with that.
Mike
It seems to be the best out of the ones I've tested, including deepfish which I'm not really impressed with.
There is also another browser that is rumored to be better than Opera mini. I believe it's called thunderhawk.

I'm running a Hermes on AT&T's network and a 6800 on Sprints EVDO rev. 0. Overall and in most places AT&T's HSDPA network is faster than the Sprint. I carried both phones for two weeks in Salt Lake City and surrounding areas.
The Sprint network had EVDO in more towns than AT&T had UMTS or HSDPA. However, I could get the AT&T signal and get on the web in more places than I could with the Sprint. Sometimes it's only Edge speeds but I could get on.
I ended up giving the Sprint Phone to my Son and keeping the Hermes and trying to decide whether to buy the Kaiser or not.
yeah, i've been damn near shocked at the speeds i've been getting on hsdpa in nashville vs. ev-do since i've gotten my kaiser on wednesday. but i know surfing in edge will drive me insane if i ever have to do it

I'm really close to ordering a Kaiser unlocked. Most of the Kaiser posts have been from people in Europe. Please give me a full rundown. I'm especially interested in how the gps works with google maps. Have you set it up and given it a whirl?
Also, surfing on Edge with the Hermes is not all that bad. It's funny because I go to some remote locations camping in Utah. Sometimes I can get an "E" or even a "G" signal and surfing isn't that bad while I lie in my tent at night. The fact that I can surf at all in such locations is amazing in and of itself. It down loads articles well but the pics take a few seconds more.
With the 6800, I can get a 1XRTT signal and can make a phone call, but I cannot get web access. With the AT&T service, it's hard to place a call in these remote locations but sending email and browsing the web works better. Go figure.

Just on the google maps part. It works well - but it tends (for some folk) to not wait long enough to acquire the signal before it times out. However there is an easy workaround:

I loved my Hermes after taking it to Black WM6, the Kaiser is just that much better, as stated already, it's solid, fast and the GPS rocks. I use Google Maps and iGuidance v4 and they both work flawlessly, even at the same time with active GPS. You won't be dissapointed, except for lower "in-call" volume in the BT headset (many have complained about this, others say it's OK)

Thanks guys. I may have to order one. I have to buy my wife a new sewing machine first.
Well I've been playing with my Kaiser for a day now and on the whole I love the build quality and the extra memory and storage is a blessing.
However, I have major issues with the radio version.
It is dreadfully slow when the 3G signal is a just one or two bars - it often wont find an internet connection (things like the weather on the Home plug will not update) and I couldnt even make any calls for a while when the signal was low. I was tempted to switch to straight GSM.
Does anybody know of a good radio upgrade?
Yesterday I had the opportunity to take a long drive to north Jersey. I opted to compare the GPS performance of the Bionic and a 2-year old Magellan. I mounted the Bionic in it's VZW window mount and off we went. Even on the very open-sky NJTP, navigating using either the VZ Navigator app or Google Maps app was totally unacceptable. Cruising between 40 and 70 MPH, the Bionic searched for the GPS signals after less than a minute or two. I constantly had to press OK to enable the GPS reception. On the slower roads the Bionic would catch up with my location at red lights but once moving screen redraws were smeared across the display.
The Bionic GPS seems to be fine when walking around, even under modest foliage or Philadelphia or near an open window. Navigator, Maps and Poynt tell all, correctly. Drive at speed, natta.
Any ideas? I didn't expect the Bionic to perform as well as the standalone Magellan but I thought the Bionic would be acceptable?
>> I didn't expect the Bionic to perform as well as the standalone Magellan but I thought the Bionic would be acceptable?
My experience is the opposite. Mine just works ... EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. .... easily outperforming my two year old Garmin in ease of use and functionality but not location. As far as location goes both are "dead on" accurate all the time. Both devices obtain GPS locks in under five seconds. The difference maker is the 4G connection on the Bionic over the no connection whatsoever Garmin.
Who knows why yours isn't working. Are you rooted? Running a custom ROM?

What are you talking about? GPS is enabled one time and done. If you are actually having to press a button multiple times to keep GPS enabled then you have a major software issue with your phone.

Again what are you talking about? Never seen any re-draws on any version of Google Navigation (never used VZ Navigator) so I sound's like a defective phone to me.
Honestly unless these problems were found solely in VZ Navigator I would have to say something is very wrong with your phone in particular. Try a factory reset, sometimes this can clear up a software issue. If that doesn't help, exchange the phone.
Thanks all for the feedback. The Bionic is stock, no custom ROMs, no rooting. I have added a few apps but nothing unusual or non-Market. Looks like I'll be making a trip to the store.
I don't understand why, but the VZW rep looked through the phone and immediately said Lookout (tbe antivirus program) was the cause of the GPS problems. It was removed and on the 20-minute drive home VZ Navigator worked perfectly. VZ Navigator adjusted its directions when I deliberately went off route. I'll test Google Maps another day.
Lookout is pretty much just a waste of battery, especially for you since you didn't put any apps not from the market on the phone.
I spent a weekend in North Jersey using Google Navigation heavily and didn't get any drops, whether I was in the Vernon Valley/Great Gorge area or cruising down the GSP at flow-of-traffic speed (you know how fast that is).
Definitely give it another try...Verizon isn't worth the extra fee!

Why do you use vzw navigator? The google is amazingly awesome and free
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
I don't understand why VZ navigator even exists... Google navigation has worked perfect on all my droids.
I wouldn't touch VZ Nav with a 10' pole dancer ;-)
I just got my Bionic yesterday, been spending the better part of last night and today getting things back like I like em (came from D1). I used the (google) nav today to test it out...Worked Great, as expected. Just can't wait until we we 4g here in KC and I pony up more money for the car dock.
I have to agree with all the previous posters. I have the Bionic and live in Northern Jersey and Google Maps works tremendously well. Also, I have the Lookout App installed on my Droid and I have never experienced any issues with Google Maps or its Navigation.
Hey folks
Im wanting to buy an activity wearable to work alongside my M8. Iwant to use it for Powerwalking, Jogging and sleep. It would be nice to have a watch on it , but not a deal breaker as step and fitness accuracy is more important than a smart watch.
As the M8 is now bundled with fitbit software, then I have considered a fitbit band, but with so many wearables and reviews for any Android, its hard to pick a band. I dont want to spend more than £100.
I was just wanting to know of anyones experience of using any Android wearable (not just fitbit), Is it accurate for exersize stats, would you recommend it.
Many Thanks

Garmin Vivosmart works fairly well. It had some hiccups when it first came out (mainly with keeping a solid connection with phone) but it works pretty well for me after a couple firmware updates. It may be a bit more than £100 but not a whole lot unless you get the version that comes with a heart rate strap. Besides the typical Fitbit type tracking (steps, sleep) it also will notify (vibrate) you on any phone notification. You can specify what app notifications you want pushed to the Vivosmart. You can read the notification (email, facebook, twitter, sms, incomming phone call, etc) but can't dismiss on the band.
That said the newest Fitbit with heart rate functionality built in has caught my attention. I'd probably look at it pretty closely if I didn't just get the Vivosmart a couple months ago.
Edit: and it's waterproof up to 50 meters. I never take it off other than to charge every 4-5 days.

The Charge HR is one I find interesting due to heart rate monitoring though really do prefer to have one that's waterproof like the Vivosmart. There are a few things I wish the Vivosmart had like multiple alarms (it only allows one), better sleep tracking (fitbit wins this by a bunch), and ability to work with other companies so you can find more friends to challenge with. I don't know anyone that uses a Vivosmart of the older Vivofit so I have no connections in their app. I had 5-6 on Fitbit. Pretty much all the above is mentioned on the different reviews that are out there. I also keep an eye out on their forum, https://forums.garmin.com/forumdisplay.php?478-vivosmart.
Accuracy seems fine for me, steps wise. It doesn't really track any other activity. For other activities I log them in MyFitnessPal which the Vivosmart can sync with. I did wear it for a day with my old fitbit force and it registered more steps than my fitbit but it wasn't more than a one or two percent.

After looking at the Garmin.. i think ide like a few more features for my money than just counting steps.. plus I read that the Garmin mobile app is a little sparse. It would also be nice too count calories and sleep patterns, but the charge HR and flex look nice. While i dont necxessarily need something as feature packed as say Samsings S Health, a few app features would be nice.

I have the jawbone up24 and use it exclusively with my M8. I also owned the fitbit flex prior to owning my jawbone Up24. I liked the fitbit, but I LOVE my jawbone. The fitbit gave me tons of issues, not syncing correctly, battery status not showing correctly. Battery not lasting anywhere near the week it was supposed to (think 3 days), and wasn't the best looking band. After switching to the UP24, it's been smooth sailing. No connection issues, battery life was already good, but the new firmware update extends battery life up to 14 days between charges. I thought not having a screen would bother me, but honestly, with the smart alerts that the app gives you, I don't find myself longing for a screen. It also syncs with other apps such as runtastic and myfitnesspal (apps to track your run, and track your food intake). If i didn't already have one, I'd take at the jawbone 3. It does everything the up24 does, but adds changeable bands, and a heart rate monitor. Hope that helps.

The jawbone seems slimmer than the fitbit. As for the syncing issues with the jawbone, that was before when it was only for iOS. Now that it syncs with android, I've had no issues. I honestly had more sync issues with the fitbit than I did with the jawbone. You should be able to catch good deals on either one though. Another option that's could be worn on the wrist or clipped to you is the jawbone move. It's basically a jawbone up24, but with a user replaceable battery. It's also significantly cheaper than both the flex and up24

Ordered a misfit flash.. On black Friday needless to say hasn't even shipped yet. It was a bargain at $24, it does distance, steps, calories burned and sleep. Pretty sure it has a clock too.
Might post a review at some point if I'm happy with it
Hi everybody! I am planning to buy a Z3C now that its price has dropped into my budget limit. I was reading a few reviews about the phone and I stumbled upon this: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Sony-Xperia-Z3-Compact-Smartphone-Review.127925.0.html
Those guys did a test on the GPS and they claim it is not accurate. However, with GPS, it is a bit tricky to test since it depends on a lot of parameters, and that is probably why non of the other reviews have mentioned it. So I thought I better ask it here. Based on your experience, how does the GPS on Z3C work? is it accurate? (I would not expect military grade accuracy, just in comparison to the competition, and maybe to the Nexus 5x).

It has always been flawless with Garmin pro and Navmii.
But realistically I don't think there's any way you can test it, it works or it doesn't

Thanks! Yes that is what I think. It depends on a lot of parameters and it is impossible to control. Although, for example I can say that my Nexus 5 was worse than my friend's Moto X (1st Gen) in that regard. It always locked faster than mine. I was wondering if anybody had such a similar experience in comparison with other phones.
It works really good, I get lock in about 15-20 seconds and I can absolutely not complain about the navigation.
i faced sat locking problems without data and among skyscrapers
I use Endomondo on daily basis and sometimes HERE maps and if anything is good on this phone that is GPS.
My GPS doesn't work at all. Searching the net it might be Sony and/or Marshmallow-specific (many, but not all users affected). When my GPS was still working last year, it was really usable.
