[Q] Samsung ATIV S Neo ATT downgrade and interop unlock - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Sorry if I'm asking something that were answered previously, I didn't find anything at the forums, that's why I'm here. I recently acquired a Samsung ATIV S Neo from AT&T but can be used with any other carrier.
I've tried to perform the interop unlock, but the application fails when launching the register editor in the Diagnosis application. I read it could be because the device is running the GDR3 firmware or a recent version.
If I check the settings menu on my device, this is the information that I can see there:
Samsung ATIV S Neo
Model - SGH-I187
Carrier - AT&T
SO - 8.0.10512.142
Firmware - 2013.13.09.4
Hardware - 3.1.1.0
Radio software - 0321.13.9.4
Radio hardware - 0.0.1
I didn't updated nor installed anything, first thing I've tried to do was to interop unlock it. So after hitting this error, a couple questions came to my mind:
- I assume that 8.0.10512 is GDR3 Preview, and that's why this method is not working for me. My CSC version is I187ATTAMI4 and the current CSC is ATT. Is there any chance to downgrade the firmware to GDR2 and then perform the interop unlock?
- If so, after downgrading to GDR2, and performing interop unlock, could be possible to maintain it and upgrade the device to GDR3?
I think that's all, in case you need additional information about the device, please don't hesitate and let me know.
Thanks,

Custom CSC. I don't think we have a flashable stock ROM for the S Neo phones, but MBN builder will let you make a "custom ROM" (actually just a custom set of carrier customizations, but that includes registry changes which is all that interop & capability unlocks are...) that you can then flash to the phone.
If you did manage to downgrade - the critical thing you need is the original version of the Diagnosis app, though downgrading the driver *helps* too - then yeah, there's a way to keep it through upgrade.
ALL of this stuff is (repeatedly, in many cases) documented and easy to find on the D&H forum section...

Thanks for your replay GoodDayToDie, I finally found these two posts:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2480510
And a fake wp8 rom for my ATIV S Neo: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2692049
Problem is that for the fake_SGH-I187_SIGN file, I'm getting in the flasher a "This is an unknown binary" and because of that, I can't keep doing the process.
Any suggestions?
On the other hand, when I open the flasher, the device is not being detected, I installed the drivers.
Thanks,

Can't help you there; I don't really "do" custom ROMs or flashing or anything. My phone is, at least for the moment, still just running a (heavily hacked) stock ROM.

You can use latest MBN Creator. It can flash phones without fakeROM. And create a custom CSC for you too.

Help with understanding samsung/android ROM

Hi all, im new to android and i recently purchased a samsung galaxy S. i come from htc windows mobile and i need help understanding the different components of ROM in the galaxy S/android.
right now i have
PDA: I9000XXJF3
Phone: I9000XXJF3
CSC: I9000XAJF3
basically, i dont really understand what are those things. Im assuming phone=modem/radio, and pda=ROM revision.
1.what is CSC?
when i downloaded a new ROM from samsung-firmware, there is only one file in it, which is PDA.
2.do i need all 3 components to ensure the phone is usable after flash?
3.can i mix and match any phone and csc file from different ROMs?
4.im trying to get my phone to work in china, is there any region specific PHONE or CSC file that i should use, or can i just use any Europian files and they will work automatically in china?
5.is there some kind of HSPL thing in android phones i need to take care of before flashing so i wont brick my phone?
i find them really complicated, in htc windows mobile phones, there are only 2 things to consider and they are straight forward. Radio ROM is what it is, Radio. and there is the ROM version, which is straight forward as well. and they can be mixed and matched as long as the phone model is the same. no region problems. can someone help me to understand this from a windows mobile user perspective please? thank you.
Hi
I'm newbee too - and it seems that we are on our own, since nobody here answers Q unless the Q is top dollar relevant :-(
I've f/w updated my Galaxy S Gt-i9000 twice.
I did it PRECISELY as described in the "how-to-doc" that U-ll find on Samsung-firmware. And YES; they say use PDA if there's only one file.
What I did, was looking carefully at the printed screens in the how-to-guide.
CSC: Language-something.
PDA: ...?
After fW update I "reset-to-factory". Don't know if thats needed. Maybe it resets original fw? Does it load settings/fw from ROOT.... Don't know; but would like to know if somebody would be so kind.
Kindly (but...)
I think the reason for no answers is that they have already been answered in the forum.
Frezore is right. Questions like that stay unanswered because they have been asked 100 times before. I'll make an faq thread tomorrow morning.
Basically:
CSC is country specific code. It's some app as well as settings for 3G network providers and things like that. However, as of now only russian and region independent CSCs are available with the newer ROMs. In order to get internet on your phone in china you'll have to enter the APN manually. Info like that varies per provider and its easily found using google.
The phone file is what you would call the radio rom.
The PDA is the ROM. The software/firmware. It include android and all the apps that get installed along with it like samsungs touchwiz and swype.
It is preferable to update all three at the same time, however, not always necessary. An outdated modem (phone) firmware might result in compatibility issues (although very unlikely) and old CSCs can cause problems if the apps are outdated or apn settings are wrong.
However, CSCs, phone and pda files ate always distributed in complete packages so there really isn't abig deal.
There is no such thing as HSPL. Firmwares on samsung phones are installed using Odin (samsung-firmwares.com).
If you factory reset (just like on the wimo phones) you'll revert to the original settings of the rom/firmware you currently have installed. To get your phone completely back to factory settings you'll have to flash the factory rom that came with your device.
FAQ thread tomorrow.

Sorry, but i not see any sticky about that, and yes, Im same like alexnvidia , old WM user, but dont know much, aka nothing, about Android, because it is relative new OS, and total otherwise than Windows Mobile.
Example: No where i cannot read, how i can enter in terminal mode on Galaxy ? No sticky, no wiki, no google, and nowhere...
Thanks any on answer forwarding

Terminal mode? It's a kind of Linux. Just download and install terminal software, there are plenty of them on Market.

[Q] Interop unlock on SGH-t899m

I have a Samsung SGH-t899m that is on the Telus network at the moment. I need to get it interop unlocked so I can add the registry tweaks needed to see the full filesystem.
Can this device be interop unlocked in the manner of the others that I have seen?
Is there anywhere I can buy a device that already has interop unlock and full filesystem access?
Thanks,
Kevin
The original WP8 interop-unlock hack was developed on a phone exactly like yours, as it happens! However, it doesn't work if your phone has the firmware version that normally comes with GDR3, or if it has any version of WP8.1
However, -W_O_L_F- has produced some fake carrier customizations (part of a ROM, but not a full custom ROM) that can be flashed to such phones, and will do the interop-unlock for you. It's pretty straightforward. Check the Dev&Hacking subforum for threads about custom ROMs or CSCs or MBNs.
Thanks for the help everyone!
So it turns out I had to buy a sim card so I could get access to the dialer to get the Diagnosis app unhidden. Fortunately, it looks like my phone has GDR2 and is carrier unlocked already. Yay!
Now if I can just figure out how to get all capabilities so I can install the native webserver all capabilities version.

If you're using an interop-unlocked Samsung on WP8.0, just run the standard process in the interop-unlocks thread; it's not too complicated. Install an app, run it, install another, run it too.
already on 8.1.xx.xxx
I have the SGH T899M and already went into 8.1.xxx.xx.
Reg edit and hidden diagnosis menu have since been removed after gdr3 I believe, this we know already. I have also purchased the developer account and have dev unlocked this phone to allow use of deployment.
However we cannot have full app capabilities with just a dev account. Is there any safe rom to downgrade to be able to make use of reg edit , interlop and gain full app rights? I am sorry if this has been covered somewhere else but I have been searching everywhere for this info before I made my post here.

Wolf,
About the Ativ S with region CSC ZTO
I did all the things we talked about. following the entire procedure you sent to me, but the result was not so good.
After hard resets, my carrier continues broadcasting me a message in every reception signal change (and turning off the broadcast messages in settings don't resolve this issue).
I follow these steps:
1) downgrade to GDR3 (I8750OXACMJ1 + original CSC with ATO)
2) hard reset
3) install all updates via ota (including wp8.1.1 + sammy update + new bootloader)
4) hard reset
5) MBN Creator to change region with the file you sent (evrything was ok, all 5 "Dones" appear)
6) reboot
7) hard reset
8) in Diagnosis (*#1234#) the ZTO was there (system adjust CSC version to I8750ZTODNI3)
9) everything was going fine, system downloaded my portuguese language package for keyboard and speech
10) engines to install language support .......... and.........
11) ANNOOOOOYIIIIING BROADCAST MESSAGES!!!! (((
So, now I downgrade again to GDR3, but this time with my original region CSC ZTO.
Everything is great. Carrier broadcasting was gone, but no updates for me.
Thats it. I'm waiting for a solution, because official wp8.1.1 is awesome,
Ativ S worked better than ever for me on it.
Wolf,
thank you A LOT for supporting me, I hope you find the "missing line" that cause that region carrier issue n the new MBN Creator.. I'm sure many people will benefit from the solution.
There is an option in "advanced text messages" settings. May be it's selected.
You original CSC version (that you flashed) was I8750ZTOALL3. So, it was updated somehow. May be Samsung did something wrong once more.

I tried this like i said in the reply. No changes at all.
And that thing only happens with differents CSCs than the original ZTO here in Brazil.
I read in some place, I can't remember, some guys from London, when travelling and using local SIM carriers, had the same problem.
My question is: why when i aplly the CSC ZTO directly in rom flashing the things work fine..... but when i flash only the CSC in wp8.1.1 it turns my region into a mess?
Misteries..............

Some curious..
I noticed something when I tryed the rom I8750OXAALL3 (GDR1) + original ATO CSC.
In Diagnosis info versions (*#1234#) appears in fields PDA, Phone and CSC >>> last 4 characters ALL3.
Then the system updated "Over The Air" to GDR2, and the last 4 characters changed to BME1.
Same happened after GDR3 update. Last 4 characters changed to CMJ1 ...
and finally after the wp8.1.1, last 4 characters changed to DNI3.
In all these times, keeping the rest intact, I8750OXA----.
And conferring with the available ROMS out there, the names match.
So, i guess the last 4 characters indicate the system version, GDR 1,2,3, 8.1.1 ..
When I did those tries with your file MBN to my ZTO in WP8.1.1, before hard reseting the diagnosis didn't open, and I couldn't view the version that it showed to the CSC.
After hard reseting, my CSC was I8750ZTODNI3
Now I'm using GDR3 flashed with my original I8750ZTOALL3.csc file, and in diagnosis the version shown in CSC field is I8750ZTOCMJ1. >>>AFTER HARD RESET!
Before hard reset, it showed I8750ZTOALL3.
Crazy. But its working fine.
I think when this rom I8750OXADNI3 (official 8.1.1) appear, it will save a lot of people in same situation as I. With all these flashes that I've done in the last few days, the best choice always was flashing a ROM togheter the original CSC ZTO.
Ativ SE
Will the MBN Creator work with an Ative SE, If so is there anything that needs to be altered?
Can a Custom Rom be made for the Ativ SE like the older models?

Changing some registry entries
Hey everyone, I have an Ativ S Neo with the option to enable voice roaming greyed out. Someone found a fix by changing these four keys from 1 to 0:
[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Connectivity\CellUXOEMConfigurable\]
"HideDataRoamingInternational=0"
"HideDataRoamingDomestic=0"
"HideVoiceRoamingInternational=0"
"HideVoiceRoamingDomestic=0"
People have been using this fix by interop unlocking the phone and using the registry editor, but I thought maybe this tool would be easier. Could someone help me out? I generated an MBN using the tool and added exactly what appears above to the registry. I don't want any other tweaks. So my questions are 1) did I format the above correctly? 2) If so, how do I use the MBN generated to actually make the change on the phone? I've flashed my phone back to stock before using the flash kit, but I've never flashed anything custom. Do I use the .wp8 file that came with the flash kit, and the MBN instead of the CSC? That would be easy!
Maybe I would be better off just interop unlocking using the other guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2435697) but I wasn't sure if that still works, plus it seems harder.
Thanks for your help!

To put it differently, and perhaps better, will adding those four keys above change the existing values from 1 to 0? Will it overwrite? Thanks,
This seems great, really appreciate the effort wolf. Going to play around with this soon.
How to change model name?
I've looked at the MBN Creator tool and it isn't obvious how to change a phone's model name from there. Your OP said it was possible to change the phone model (model name?) on a Neo; how does one do so?
I'm migrating from one carrier to another and I have the new carrier's signed CSC and WP8 images. Each carrier uses a different model name for the same phone, and looking at the raw files it does seem all of these phones share the same code base.
Even so, the WP8 downloader tools (up to 5.3 anyway) will not send a mismatched model number image up to a phone, and there didn't seem to be a way to override that.
And a Thanks already for the MBN Creator tool.

MBN Creator changes phone model of the ROM, not phone. You can use any tweak tool to change phone model like it's done for update to WP10.
Hmmm wait.
I have Samsung Ativ S with 8.10.14157.200. Can I use this hack to do interop unlock? I can't unlock it GDR2 way because diagnosis app is lacking regedit now.
Also sorry but You didnt gave any instructions how this tool works. Do I need to have WP8 rom and then generate MBN? Or can I just generate MBN and flash it to my current ROM? Do device need to be in download mode? Do I need to match CSC with current ROM?
So many questions, sorry.I would like to be sure that im doing it the good way.

[Q] Updating AT&T S4 Active to Android 4.3+

Hello,
in my company we are developing an android app. The lowest android version this app supports is android 4.3.
The company bought several testing devices including a AT&T branded Samsung Galaxy S4 Active. With Android 4.2.2 (Buid Number: JDQ39.I9295UCUAMF3)
I tried it for a while now, but I can't get the OTA Update to work. It says "Software update interrupted. Try again in 24 hours".
I can bypass the 24h lock by changing the date of the phone. But even after ~30 tries the phone is not updating.
There is no SIM Card in the phone. Is a AT&T SIM Card needed to update the device? I am not able to get one, because I am located in Germany.
Can I update the phone manually with Kies or something?
I don't have admin right on my machine so I need to know what to do, before I contact the admin to install a required software.
Could a blocked port be an issue? I do have access to the internet, but if Samsung (or AT&T) uses some non standard port, my company could be blocking it.
(Root is not an option.)
Kind regards
Cliff

Hi Cliff. I can't say for sure, but my guess is you can't access the OTA because you're not in the right region (someone correct me if I'm wrong). As far as I know, you shouldn't need a SIM to update, again could be wrong. More importantly, there are other ways to update. You could probably try Kies, but I wouldn't recommend it, it seems like users always have issues with Kies. I would strongly recommend you try updating the phone with Odin, a tool by Samsung that let's you change around your phone's firmware (among other things) when the phone is in download mode.
There is an exhaustive guide linked to here that thoroughly explains how to go from any version of android (official, for this phone) to any other version. In simpler terms, that link shows you how to manually update, which is what I think you're looking for. Also the files you'll need to download are located here. Hope I've helped, and good luck updating! :good:
Oh, just re-read your caveats: you almost certainly don't need a SIM for Odin to work, and you definitely don't need root either.

Thank you for your answer. Yes, maybe AT&T does region lock the update -.-
I've used Odin on my old Galaxy S2 some years ago.
I'll have a look into it and decide if this is the way to go.
Odin will do it as long as there are full install files for you to use.

You need an AT&T SIM card in the phone in order to install AT&T OTA updates. You can't use Kies to update because AT&T won't let Samsung post AT&T firmware on Kies. So your only option is to use Odin and the guide posted above.

chinese N920T board - another ROM

Hello everybody!
I flashed a lot of phones, however I am struggling with this Note 5 N920T a bit. Bought this mobo from Chinese reseller, looks like everything is working okay, however if I want to update the software, it reminds me that ROM was changed and I need it to flash it over cable. I am perfectly aware of ODIN, however the board is unlocked now for all the networks globally.
I tried to check the T-Mobile Device Unlock App, however tapping on a "Permanent unlock" option brings me message "Unlock failed" - try to reboot and try again.
So, questions!
1. I downloaded the Nougat original ROM for T-Mobile USA and generic ROM. Would you say that the device unlock will remain after flashing? I would try the T-Mobile firstly, if that will work, I´ll try the generic one. I assume it will be working again...but that sim unlock...will it last?
I wanted to do full backup, however the board is not rooted so I rather asked the reseller for sending me the ROM file that is actually in the phone (currently waiting for it)...and just roaming around about possibilities.
Thanks for any help in forward guys, you´re the best!
The unlock was probably done through third party software or a EFS method.
You can forget about the Device Unlock app from now on. It will remain unlocked as long as you don't rebuild the NV data.
That means that you can flash the T-Mobile firmware on it, or you can flash any other available custom ROM that can work on it.
The update error is probably appearing due to an unofficial system status.
Go to Settings>About device> Device status and make sure it says official.
If it says "Custom" then you have your answer. If it says "Official" already it's good to be flashed with the software of your choice. Is up to you!
