[Q] Error 171 on my htc one while running RUU - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After months of thinking it through, i finally decided to give up on sense and try cyanogenmod... horrible desicion. I tried the installer and according to to the installer itself the install had concluded without error and all i had to do now was wait for my device to boot. When booting my device off andd after 5 minutes of beeing stuck in a bootloop, i realized that something had gone horribly wrong. I found many solutions online, but ended up narrowimg down to 2 options: wipe data/ factory reset and wipe dalvik through CWM or running a ruu to go bavk to stock and retry from there. Tried doing the wipe but i kept getting the error "Cant mount data" so i pretty much gave up on that option and went for running the RUU. Succesfully locked my bootloader again and all that was left for me to do was run the ruu and wait for my htc one to be running sense again! While going through the installer, i got an error at around the" 1/5" part of the ruu install (i used an exe) which said "error 171, check usb connection" and i also simultaniously got a pop up window that said "htc_fastboot.exe has stopped working" . At this point i really dont know what to do. PLEASE! Someone help me!

I think it's down to Windows 8 - fastboot isn't detecting the drivers Which is why it fails with error 171
Have you tried again with a Windows 7 PC?
I think there is a post on here about getting fastvoot drivers to work on Windows 8. I'll have a look

Does fastboot work normally or does it only fail when running an RUU, if that's the case uninstall HTC Sync if you have it installed. But leave drivers installed. HTC sync is known to cause problems with RUU's
But there is no RUU that will work for you since your device is s-on and on the latest firmware. Downgrading is not possible with s-on. At this point the best you can hope for is to flash a custom rom. At least you can get the phone booting that way.
Do if adb/fastboot is working normally just push a Rom and install it. If you can't get adb/fastboot working on your Windows 8 pc try my mini guide here to create a bootable Linux pen drive.

Fastboot and ADB only fail while running RUU. I thought i could use the ruu since i pretty much had cyangenmod installed (Got stuck in a bootloop). I still want to install cyanogenmod on my phone so if you could help me with that it would be great! Fastboot and ADB work so if you could help me push cyanogenmod on it, this poblem would be fixed! You can't use this RUU on your phone because its an older version. You need s-off to flash lower version RUU. You will need to either s-off your phone or restore it using a nandroid backup of 6.07.1540.1 or flash another custom rom like Danny suggested above. Look in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2355992 you might found a nandroid backup of that version. If you can find it just tell me and I'll upload mine for you. I also have the stock recovery for that version if needed.
to install cyanogenmod you need a recovery with block:by-name support like newer version of TWRP.

Download the latest CWM recovery and flash it with fastboot. http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/HTCOne/recovery/M7CWM/recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.8-m7.img
Code:
fastboot flash recovery "nameofrecovery".img
fastboot erase cache
Download CM11 here. Rename the file to rom.zip and place it in your fastboot folder on your pc.
http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/HTCOne/M7/roms/CM11/cm-11-20140624-NIGHTLY-m7.zip
Also download gapps rename it to gapps.zip and place it in your fastboot folder.
http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/gapps/PA/pa_gapps-stock-4.4.3-20140608-signed.zip
Boot your phone to cwm recovery and connect usb. Do a factory reset then in the command window type
Code:
adb push rom.zip /sdcard
Wait for the push to compmete
Code:
adb push gapps.zip /sdcard
again wait for completion, it's normal for the command window to appear unresponsive until the push completes.
Now use cwm to install the Rom.zip followed by gapps.zip.

He also asked me (via PM) a TWRP nandroid backup of stock 6.07.1540.1 which I have uploaded for him yesterday.
No update yet, still don't know if the OP will flash the rom or restore the nand but I think he wants to flash the rom (but have the nand just in case).

[Q] please help me restore my One

Good day all
I have been running CM 10.2 on my One for some months. Recently its started playing up so ive decided to go back to stock.
Ive googled the process. Fastboot works OK and see's my One connected OK.
Im having issues figuring out what RUU I should be downloading. Initially I went for RUU_M7_U_JB_50_HTC_Europe_1.29.401.2
After a number of minutes it failed and said something like it cannot use this on my phone. My phone is a UK purchased unlocked device. Can anyone point me at the correct RUUI should download?
Looking at the fastboot screen I can see that my OS is 2.24.401.8
hboot is 1.54.0000
Please, any pointers to get a stock OS installed and my device booting again.

You can flash this (compatible with your firmware, CID & MID): http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/guru_reset_m7_2-24-401-8-zip/
if you want to receive OTAs, you'll need to select "stock recovery" (which will overwrite custom recovery).

If you have unlocked bootloaders then download twrp or cwm and rename to recovery put the file in the fastboot folder.
Then type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
this will flash the custom recovery.

Do one thing install a custom rom like ARHD etc. and then S-off your phone using rumrunner.
This is going to be one of those jobs that just fails and all I end up with is a bricked phone.
I am a mac user and was using a windows XP VM to communicate with me phone using fast boot... When I try to push a recovery image XP fails badly and reboots...
I can't boot camp my mac because I'm running without a CD drive and boot camp needs a CD drive before installation.
Any tips on how to get my phone sorted using a mac?

1- just use mac versions of fastboot & adb, i believe you can find them here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2365506
(or google for them)
2- do you care about having your phone "out-of-the-box"? that entails much more work. Can you live with an UNLOCKED or RELOCKED bootloader, and possibly the TAMPERED sign?
3- if you don't care about ^^ (2), then just use the Guru Reset ROM, i linked before.
get adb and fastboot working on mac, then in bootloader/FASTBOOT USB:
fastboot flash recovery <name of recovery>.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
-> enter recovery
adb push <name of guru>.zip /data/media/0/
then in recovery choose "install" and select the Guru Reset ROM.
Ok so i reloaded the recovery image. Rebooted and hey presto Cyanogenmod 10.2 loaded again. Phone is now working BUT I would still like to go back to stock.
With that in mind I followed your instructions above and tried to load the Guru zip on to the SDCARD. The ADB process finishes and it says its copied the file over but I can never seem to find it whe i load the recovery and try to install from a zip file.
Questions. Am I right in thinking I can continue to load the Guru zip to attempt to get back to stock?
What am i doing wrong?

if your phone is booting up again
just copy the guru.zip to the phone storage from your mac
no need to "push" if your phone is booting up
To confirm, I am now copying the zip over.
Is there a chance of me bricking the phone again or will the Guru zip return the phone to stock and allow OTA updates?

yeah the Guru reset was designed to put the phone back to stock
it uses an Aroma installer .. choose Stock Recovery to be able to receive OTA in the future. but you won't be able to flash any custom roms or Root with the stock recovery
that seemed to do the trick. phone is back stock.
after initial setup t imediately downloaded and installed a small update. rebooted and then asked to download another 4.3 675mb big update. that one seemed to reset the devce to new again. after setup the 2nd time i can see it didnt work as the phone was as if i had just completed the guru install...
thoughts?

[Q] HTC One stuck in recovery and bootloader

Hello,
I recently decided to update my ROM to Renovate 8.2 (I had a really old version of it before so I already did all the necessities to install a ROM). Everything went perfectly, I downloaded the ROM and put it in the phone's storage. Went into TWRP recovery (2.5.0), install -> clicked on the ROM zip, followed the on screen direction, installation went smoothly, then finish -> reboot.
Since then, the phone default boots to recovery; I can also access bootloader, but that's it.
I have looked for a solution everywhere, but nothing seems to work. The most promising seems to be the adb sideload, but I get the device not recognized error (all the fix for this error need me to get into the settings page in the phone, which I can't access).
I suspect it has something to do with dalvik cache/cache, but I don't know what to do.
Any help would be appreciated!
Have you updated your TWRP to the latest version? What about firmware updates prior to flashing the ROM?

I put the phone into bootloader no problem, ran the program, connected it to my PC via USB as instructed, the bootloader even reads FASTBOOT USB which is suppose to happen; but when I proceed with the program, it's stuck on "waiting for device". My PC gives the error "USB device not recognized".
I am using this recovery program.

Guys I am so stumped!
I can't update TWRP because my PC refuses to recognize my HTC One, I have tried numerous driver fix solutions but they all end up with either "USB device not recognize" or "the best driver is already installed" when I tried to manually install the drivers.
I am also considering just resetting the phone, how would I go about that if I am stuck in recovery and bootloader?
Any help would be appreciated!

HOLD YOUR HORSES!!
since PC isn't seeing your phone, go to bootloader screen, and report back the following:
1- What kind of phone do you have M7_U/UL ?? cause the recovery you posted is for "TWRP 2.6.3.4 for HTC One 802w (M7C_DUG)"
2- What's your hboot version
3- Which OS are you running on your PC?
Have you got a friend or family member with a PC running Windows 7. Windows 8.1 has known issues with fastboot drivers.

Forgive my stupidity but what would I do with the file? Do I mount it with something like daemon tools?

I did erase cache and re-install it but it doesn't work ...
To the original OP.
Windows 8.1 will not work with hboot 1.44. You will need a windows 7 set up for adb and fastboot with HTC drivers installed.
The file i sent you is TWRP 2.6.3.3. Once you have fastboot on windows 7 type---
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.3-m7
or get the TWRP from here--
http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/m7
This will give you the correct recovery for your M7ul
Say I am considering a complete reset? What options do I have given that I am stuck in recovery/bootloader and have trouble getting my PC to recognize the phone.
Thank you to everyone for all the help so far.

[Q] How do I get my phone operable again?

Hi Guys,
Sorry to start another thread like this, but I've read and tried everything I can find on here and nothing seems to be working, in fact I seem to have made things worse.
Long story short I did the whole HTC dev unlock thing and all was fine, then I installed TWRP and pushed SuperSU, after this my phone would boot up and run for about 1 minute then reboot and go through the same routine (I let this go on for a few hours before I gave up)
Since I have tried installing different ROMs and changed the Recovery several times but I am in a position where I can boot into recovery but nothing else, unfortunately I don't even seem to be able to install any ROMs any more, I just pushed ARHD to the phone but as soon as I try to install it TWRP comes back with a failed message.
I'm sure this situation must be recoverable as I can still access recovery and fastboot but I seem to be going round in circles at the moment and getting nowhere so any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated, if there is any specific information that you need then just ask.

you'll most likely have to format data and push the file to the phone again. This will wipe the entire phone same as a RUU

Afaik ARHD must be installed using twrp 2.6.3.3 (higher versions of twrp are not compatible, or at least, they are not all compatible)
flash twrp 2.6.3.3
Code:
fastboot flash recovery name_of_recovery.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
then in twrp selsect "install", browse your phone storage to find your ARHD zip file, select it and then swipe to flash.
If this fail again, format data like cisa said above, but you'll have to push the rom to your phone storage again.

What was the error code in twrp?
What is your adb version?
Do you have latest HTC drivers installed?
Are you using a usb 2.0 ports? Maybe try another usb port/cable.
Have you checked MD5 value of your rom/recovery files?

After you done wipe/format data. Did you reboot the phone to recovery?
You have to do this to write the new file system.
If it's still failing after reboot. Disable HTC sync or better still uninstall it if you don't use it.

[Q] How to restore original ROM from CM11

Hi,
I am running CM 11 on my M7 (rooted, usb debugging on,S-On). Question is how to restore original ROM on the same phone. I tried Guru_Reset_M7_5.12.502.2_clsA but phone goes in bootloop.
I have the nandroid backup HTCOne-32GB-ATT-5.12.502.2-TWRP-stock-unrooted.zip but not sure if I can use the same.

Guru reset posted by @clsA should work. What recovery are you using to flash it? Did you check MD5? The nandroid should also do the job but this will not flash stock recovery back like the reset rom. If you want to restore the nandroid backup instead of using the reset rom, you could extract the recovery from cIsA's reset rom and flash it after restoring the backup. Stock recovery for your version is also available here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2545227

The only reason you would get a bootloop is by using an old recovery ...update to TWRP 2.6.3.3 and your be fine.
Someone in the thread also suggested a factory reset after restoring the nandroid.

You pretty well covered it ... I'm betting on an old version of CWM or TWRP was the problem.

@clsA and @alray.. I have been using TWRP 2.8.0.2 from here
http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/m7/openrecovery-twrp-2.8.0.2-m7.img
I am facing issues with adb in older versions of TWRP. (tried on two systems)
I couldn't find the md5 at the download location. Also during installation I tried with and without stock recovery, with and without wipe, with and without radio but no luck. I am facing bootloop issues even after nandroid restore (from my original post). In both cases of guru reset and nandroid restore I do perform factory reset.
As a matter of fact I have never been able to install any ROM other than CM11 after the phone crashed last week. (ClsaA might actually remember me by now since I am troubling him/her since last week

Then you might want to downgrade to 2.6.3.3... worth a try...

@alray.. I am going to try that but last time I tried I wasn't able to use adb. On upgrading to current version I was able to use adb so I guess it may not be drivers issue since at least one version of twrp worked.

I do remember, But I'm a little distracted, i got an M8 last night
got the sim card for it today (damn nano sim) and have been doing s-off and all the updates tonight.
Luckly most everything i have learned with the M7 transfers over to the M8 (just a bunch of new files to download )

well you only need adb to push the rom to your phone once! If you flash twrp 2.6.3.3, the rom will still be on your /sdcard so you'll only need to install it from recovery, no adb required.

@alray and @clsA.. well none of the above worked. I also tried Arhd 81 but still getting bootloop. I also tried flashing ElementalX kernel sheer out of frustration but got bootloop again. Looks like the only thing that's working stable is CM nightly builds. I also tried S-Off while CM was running with Rumrunner and firewwater but as usual no luck. I REALLY need to get this device back to original rom ( I don't care even if I need to go back all the way to 4.3,4.2 if it's easier to upgrade from there. Please please advise.

So you have
wiped everything + format data using your first recovery
then you have pushed arhd 81 to your phone
flashed twrp 2.6.3.3
erased fastboot cache
rebooted bootloader
rebooted in recovery mode (2.6.3.3)
installed the rom
and it still bootlooping?
You also have checked MD5 sum of twrp 2.6.3.3 and ARHD 81 before flashing?
@alray.. I just now tried again with exact same steps in sequence flashing arhd 81 installation failed (when it finished it said set metadata recursive and that some permissions failed. Then it keeped going in a bootloop). I tried flashing CM11 nightly build of 10/19 with gapps and it worked like a charm. I have no idea why only CM is able to get installed and rest others are failing.
PS: I don't NEED to get ahrd working on the phone. My ultimate goal is to get 4.4 running on M7. Do you think downgrading hboot can help since there are lots of posts that talk about downgrading it.
And for now I am downloading Google play edition of arhd and going to give it a try. (Pretty soon I am going to announce a prize for whoever gets my phone working )

yes its mandatory to use 2.6.3.3 for ARHD !
So yes you can transfer your rom to your phone storage (/sdcard) while on CM11 if its easier for you
then flash twrp 2.6.3.3 (not 2.6.3.0 nor 2.7.+ nor 2.8+, only 2.6.3.3!!)
Code:
fastboot flash recovery name_of_recovery.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
then reboot in twrp recovery and confirm your version is now 2.6.3.3
select "install" then your ARHD zip and swipe to flash!
I also assume that you already have checked MD5 on all your downloads (TWRP image and ARHD zip?) to confirm that they are not corrupted?

I see like 4 or 5 simlink errors
Pretty meaningless.
The guru reset installs and updates are still untested ( no updates from AT&T)
I don't remember everything you have tried. But do the factory reset again from the stock recovery. Flash the 5.x.502 firmware again see what happens
@clsA If I use a non-working SIM card uring flashing or install then will it be a problem. I got a new SIM card with my new M8 and the one in M7 is deactivated. ( I guess it won't make much difference)_.

You have the Sprint version of the HTC One. are you sure your using the Sprint version of the roms your flashing ? the GSM roms wont work and be careful cos if you keep flashing them they will kill your phone, the partition layouts are different.
Also make sure your using the recommended version of recovery for the flashes, on the GSM version its TWRP 2.6.3.3
Your HTC One is Sprint M7-wls, you should only be flashing Software for Sprint phones, The Roms you've tried are for International HTC One M7_ul.
Download TWRP from here and flash it with fastboot http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/m7wls To be certain you have a Sprint compatible recovery.
[
Code:
fastboot flash recovery name-of-recovery.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Boot to TWRP, Select "Wipe" then "Format Data" You will be prompted to type Yes to continue. When its done Reboot Recovery.
Download a Sprint Rom from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-htc-one/development put the rom file in your fastboot folder and rename it rom.zip.
With the phone on the TWRP home screen connect usb and push the rom to the phone
Code:
adb push rom.zip /sdcard
The command window will appear unresponsive until the push completes. When its done install the rom with TWRP.

Is that with all ROM's ? Just try a different one, maybe the one you tried is just a little unstable.

This ^^^^
It's worth trying a different ROM, but if all else fails you should be able to return to stock using the RUU and Firmware from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2795856
You will probably need to flash the firmware first to downgrade your hboot before the RUU will flash. I'm not 100% sure how that works for Sprint phones. It certainly won't do any harm so best to do it anyway. If the problem continues after the RUU then Unfortunatly it probably means you've damaged your flash memory some how. Does the device still have warranty?
thanks a lot friends!
I've installed the viper rom and it's works fine!
thanks again!
I'm trying to flash the new recovery to my HTC One but it just says waiting for device. I don't think my PC recognizes my phone. Its stuck in a bootloop also. On the bootloader it says fastboot usb though.

Windows 8 can be a bit finicky when it comes to fastboot. Is your device on hboot 1.44? Windows 8 is in no way compatible with hboot 1.44 if its anything higher you probably just need to play with the drivers.
What is the device listed as in Device Manger on the PC? It should be "My HTC"

XP is a little old but it should work with hboot 1.44. Alternatively you can use a Linux USB Pen drive

They both appeared to have worked. I pushed the rom to my phone and installed it successfully, however when I went to reboot the phone it got to the beats audio htc start up screen, and appears to be frozen.
Any ideas there? I have a telus phone and I used the international Android Revolution HD rom from the newest version.

Its M7_ul right? The rom should work with your device. Try flashing TWRP 2.6.3.3 then reinstall the rom :good:

Do I have to wipe anything or just try to install over the other rom? Thanks a ton by the way!
Edit: I wiped the cache and data so I'm trying another install.

Yeah that's fine. No wipe required but won't hurt. And your Welcome I think that will do it. i'm not sure ARHD has been tested with the latest TWRP recovery

It seems to be stuck at that same screen again, is it supposed to take a long time (>15mins) to boot the first time? I don't want to boot into recovery if it needs to set up or something. The phone is almost at capacity memory wise.
