Hey Guys, been lurking for awhile with my Note 2 and before that my LG G2x, A few questions I hope someone can point me in the right direction as you guys have before just using the search button. I've done some searching but have found conflicting answers as well as not finding my certain situation
I recently broke my Verizon Note 2, not flashed, or rooted just basic stock updates and such. The screen and touch input are useless. I came across this 5-in-1 Micro USB MHL to HDMI Cable with OTG Camera Connection Kit / 11-pin Micro USB Adapter for Samsung Galaxy S2 S3 S4 i9500 Galaxy Note, Note II (Micro 5-pin to SD card slot/ TF card slot/Micro USB2.0/HDMI) on amazon and bought it without researching too much further.
I figured I would be able to plug in a USB keyboard or mouse and my HDMI connection to TV and away we go. The phone needs to be sent back to the insurance company and I'd like to get files off the phone to retain or at the very least erase everything. I have a lock screen with PIN and I don't have Bluetooth enabled or any wireless keyboard/mouse paired on the phone so I haven't been able to do too much, it seems that only MHL or OTG will work not both. I know the Samsung Smart Dock will work but since I already ordered, received and opened this device I thought I could get this working. When I plug HDMI, USB keyboard and external power from MicroUSB, in a what seems to be a certain necessary order, I get the note 2 to mirror onto my TV and a USB icon in the upper left hand corner. The optical mouse light turns on like its getting power but no pointer shows on screen. I've had the same indicators with a keyboard but when I input on keyboard no response on screen. I'm kind of lost in what to do next or if the Smart Dock is the best option. I've seen some posts in my searching that people opened up their OTG or MHL device and replaced or added resistors. I don't think that its a viable option as I can return this item less the restocking fee and buy the Smart Dock at a reasonable price. However, that being said I welcome any input as I am looking for help. Thanks in advance for any input or ideas.
If you can view your screen, use an otg cable first and connect a wireless or a wired mouse. With that you can atleast access your phone. U can then turn on ur wifi or bluetooth and connect other device.

Not able to view screen at all on Note 2. Only when is hooked up to the device I bought am I able to see it on TV. If the device is capable of doing both which I'm not sure of it, I'm kinda hoping that it thinks the USB keyboard or mouses that I have tried are mass storage. But again I don't know

Hi,
I just received an OEM Micro USB to HDMI adapter today.
I connected my Note to the adapter and then to the HDMI cable of my TV.
Unfortunately there is no HDMI signal on the TV side.
Now, I don't know howto activate TV output on the Note. I don't even know if that's possible.
Can anyone guide me on how to activate HDMI output on the Galaxy Note ?
Should I make any settings ?
Should I play a video ? (or would it give out video from HDMI even at home screen ?)
Should I power the phone and/or the HDMI adapter through USB ?
Thanks.

Connect HDMI cable to MHL adapter, and other end into TV. (duh...)
Plug your charger cable into the MHL adapter. (output won't work without this)
Plug your MHL adapter into Note. (no configuring required!)
Everything you do on your Note will be mirrored on your TV/Screen, at the Note's native 1280x800 resolution. Plain and simple!
Video's that are played via the MHL adapter will be played at their own native resolution, up to and including 1080p.
Enjoy!
thank you.
it doesn't work unfortunately.
maybe my adapter is not working but it passes power through USB.
how can I understand if it really doesn't pass HDMI ?

It's possible that you have a faulty adapter. It should just be plug and play, but you have to make sure that the adapter is receiving external USB power in order for it to work.
ok; it works now.
the micro USB connector was not fully connected...
thanks.

Hi, me to facing similar issue. The MHL adapter when connected does not show any notification on the screen. The only thing it does is charging the phone. Does it mean its a faulty adapter?
i hope i am answering my own question but still if there is anything which i may be missing here

and what rom and kernel are you on ?
I'm on stock running ICS and I get funky results, sometimes it works for a minute or two sometimes just a few seconds. The problem seems to be on the TV, a Sony Bravia, the HDMI setting has to be Wide for picture quality (it has zoom, smart zoom, wide, 16:9 and 4:3) but as soon as there is some glitch in receiving data from the phone the TV begins to scroll through those settings to regain a signal and I can't force a setting on wide for the HDMI connector, only for one of the SCART connectors.
The frustrating part is that it works flawlessly when I connect an Asus Transformer. Could it be the MHL's USB connector? If that is the case how can I check it?

Just in case anyone relooks this up.
Connect everything. Then REBOOT PHONE/NOTE. The TV will then detect it auto.
Hope this helps someone !!
It didnt help me... my sony bravia 32" tv just wont show the gnote's video. the same adapter works fine on my samsung 32" tv but not on the sony. I have even upgarded the sony tv's firmware too. tried changing to "Wide Zoom" settings and other things but still no video showing, although the tv does know there is something plugged in to HDMI port 1.
Anyone else got ideas?

lol, just don't try that any sony device to work together with another samsung device, this is a general rule for electronic trademarks.
*Frankly my friend, I lost a complete day trying my sony ericcson bt handset to work with my note, no success at all, so, I just bought a samsung one and everything gone well.
that sux, bluetooth is a standard and im sure there are no variants... they are cheap, so i will buy another one from ebay and see if it is bcos of the adpater and not the TV.

This did help me using a Galaxy Note and a cheap no-name MHL adapter I bought of eBay. Had it connected to the HDMI input on my Dell WFP3008 monitor.
mhl n7000 camera not starting when connected
hi sorry for posting after 4 years on this thread. is the camera or camera using apps (like skype) working for anyone when the phone is coonected and displaying through mhl to tv? because whenever i try to use camera when i am connected it is not working. on stock 4.1.2. thank you
I'm hacking a portable USB keyboard (from HP iPaq) to work on my note and planning on including USB hub, battery power pack, USB port for flash drive.
I'm also planning on adding HDMI out. I'll either include a switch to go between USB (keyboard etc) and video only or if I can have everything then this will become my "turn Note into a computer" all in one solution when plugged into HDMI monitor/television.
All the pins are there. But I don't know if MHL and USB can be used at the same time. Anyone know or do I have to try it and see what happens?
Blowing up my Note USB chip would not make my day! LOL

Sorry to rain on your ideas for the second time but not possible. Even if the logic were there to somehow implement both modes, there just is not enough bandwidth on those wires. You only have two twisted pairs and 1080P needs almost all that bandwidth to push enough ones and zeros to fill the screen at 25-30fps.
Your best bet for satisfying that fantasy is bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Think I saw a youtube video yesterday of a guy playing a game through MHL out while controlling through a bluetooth keyboard.
They are mutually exclusive connections at the hardware level, so no software mod can make this possible.
Bluetooth keyboard and mouse are great - check out my youtube channel "AndroidNZ" for a demo on MHL and various uses.
I was already impressed a while back by your video showing MHL video and so I went and bought a connector of my own on ebay
My main focus is to make a little do it all dock for sitting having lunch in a cafe. All built into a wired HP iPaq keyboard. I currently have a Dell Axim bluetooth keyboard and Logitech bluetooth mouse, but they aren't as smooth as I'd like. But the mouse is probably only useful when using a big screen.
So hardware hacking time!
But even if I can't do both, it will be nice to have my phone sitting next to the television with only a short HDMI lead and the phone doesn't flop around because of the stiffness of said HDMI cable as it does currently with my existing octopus setup of leads.
So it will have two modes.
Video mode where the keyboard only acts as a stand, battery pack and video port.
Cafe mode where I have keyboard with stand, USB flash drive, battery pack and USB.
All in a 15cm x 10cm x 2.5cm tidy expanding package :-D
Maybe when the Note 2 comes out with USB 3 we might be able to have both video and USB
oops, duplicate
MHL + OTG Multimedia dock is now available!
Heres the answer to your mhl + otg problem guys but a bit costly!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Sa...axy-Note-2-N7100-EDD-S20EWEGSTD-/230889526839
who can read is in advantage
this dock station is for the note II and not for the note I.
The pinout is different.
but 1 solution could be plugging in otg then usb hub then the micro usb female to usb A then the Mhl adaptor and the other connector of the hub with the mouse and the keyboard
http://de.focalprice.com/CA0352B/USB_A_Male_to_Micro_USB_Female_Adapter_Black.html
but finally i think it won´t work because there is not enoug voltage and power to get all devices so u need an external power supplier for the hub or an battery connect with the hub. try it out and tell us of your experience

Hello,
I want to do some stuff at the same time with my phone.
Watching a movie from an usb stick while charging the phone.
So, I've bought this HDMI converter
When you plug this into the phone you can plug in your charger or USB OTG adapter in the usb port on the HDMI converter.
But i can't find any splitter cable on the internet or ebay so i can charge my phone and connect my usb stick at the same time.
I wonder if this is even possible. It is possible to charge the phone when HDMI converter is connected and it is also possible to connect my USB stick to the HDMI converter.
Anyone ever tried this or has found a simple micro usb splitter cable or normal usb splitter cable?
You can't connect a normal USB Hub because i can't send power back to my phone through the hub.
Thanks :good:
Sorry I can't help with your splitter request.
However I'd be really interested in knowing if those two items work fine with the Note 2?
Sent from my Nexus One using xda app-developers app
so the i know it isnt possible with the 5 pin mhl adapter (the old one thats not compatible with this phone)
I wonder if the 11pn version does allow this. I know the cables dont exist for what you are looking to do, there is a galaxy note smart dock 2 that seems to allow hdmi and 3 usb ports, if they allow it at the same time then it would be at least possible.
it must be. did you try the smart dock?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953061&page=2
I've ordered one and i will see how it will perform. smart dock is nice but pricey i'd like one for home and work!
Bought this one http://goo.gl/6OiGx and as it is listed compatible with the NOte 2 and the Galaxy S3 i was hoping it would work with the Note 2 as well - nope: only power OR OTG, not both.

Old thread... at least on my GS3 I have found that the ability to charge and use USB OTG at the same time is kernal specific. Anyone ever find one that works on Note 2?
Hi all,
I know there have been other postings regarding this, but none have helped me solve my situation:
I have a "stock ROM" AT&T Note 2, and have tried two different Smart Dock units from Fry's. I get NO usable HDMI signal from either when connecting to my ASUS V228H monitor; the HDMI cable/monitor have been checked as working by connecting my DVD recorder up and successfully playing video content. USB connections to a wired keyboard and mouse worked well on unit #1, for some reason not on unit #2. There was no improvement when I rebooted the phone into safe mode. Lastly, the phone is correctly recognized by a PC when connecting via USB (MTP mode).
I'm ready to scrap the whole Smart Dock idea and instead buy an MHL-to-HDMI adapter and bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo, which I think can be found with total price just around that of the Smart Dock... unfortunately, I guess there's no "splitter" that could let me hook a hard drive up as well, like I could with the Smart Dock.
Does anyone have any ideas? I of course would hate to have to hard reset the phone, but might do it if there's really a good chance of it helping.
Final question: is it possible that the microUSB connector at the base of the phone could get damaged in such a way that USB to PC connections work, but MHL video does not?

did you plug the dock into an original Samsung charger?
did you reboot?
mhl takes a lot of power, so you need to have the charger plugged in to make it work.
and the usb port can get stuck in a certain mode if you've used it too much without rebooting, a simple reboot will reset it.
I am using the new micro-USB to USB cord connected to the wall charger (FYI, plugged into a power-strip, not directly into a wall outlet, would that actually lead to MHL getting too litle power?). The phone was recently rebooted. I have typed this response using a USB-connected mouse, so at least that's working. HDMI is STILL not working.

I'm guessing that unless it's specifically stated for the gn2, like the samsung dock, the microusb connector is using 5 pins instead of 11. That's the issue you'll have with mhl adapters, too: find an 11 pin, or buy the 5-> 11 adapter.
If it says compatible with the note (not note2) or evo, that's a pretty solid guarantee it's using 5 pins.
-----
I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
in this case the amount of pins is irrelevant. (edit: unless you didn't get a note 2 smart dock)
have you tried a different screen/TV and cable?
there are multiple versions of HDMI, and your cable or screen may be sufficient for an old DVD player but not a newer device.
Interesting that nowhere on the Smart Dock's box does it say "compatible with Note 2". But looking up the part # on the Samsung.com accessories site yields the following description:
Smart Dock Multimedia Hub
EDD-S20JWE
Compatibility: Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S4
As for HDMI protocols changing over time leading to incompatibilities... WTF? They don't need to create specification version numbers like USB to clue the user in? I will test your theory with an MHL to HDMI dedicated connector purchased today. If you're right, even this device won't work with my monitor...
This is going to sound like the annoying tech support people on the phone but... are you sure everything is plugged in tight?
I only ask because when I first got my smart dock I was getting picture but no sound with my hdmi cable and I was about to try a different cable but decided to try replugging everything first and voila...it started working!
It didn't make sense to me because it must be plugged in if it's working even a little but apparently either the phone wasn't docked all the way or more likely I hadn't pressed the hdmi cable in enough.
Would be nice if it's that simple in your case. Good luck!
Sent From My Ginormous Note 2
Thank you for the suggestion. Yes, I had tested the Smart Dock's connections to make sure all were tight. No improvement.
I have given up on the Samsung Smart Dock for now. A "rig" that appears to be working is as follows:
1) Cirago MHL1000 MHL-to-HDMI adapter.
2) Mobile Phone->Voyage adapter (Micro 5 pin to 11 pin)
3) Comkia 3 foot HDMI cable.
4) ASUS VE228H monitor
5) HYPE Bluetooth Curve optical mouse
6) SMK-LINK Versapoint Bluetooth Slim Keyboard
You are definitely right about needing to check on the connection status of the various connectors. I periodically lose the HDMI video signal, which requires that I press the MHL adapter's plug tighter into the 5-to-11 pin connector. Yes, I also have the case off the Note II when attaching everything.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app (using the rig above).
Okay, I'm noticing that the HDMI signal gets lost every 5-10 minutes and blacks out the monitor for 5-10 secs. I also have been having the issue of definitely less than 1080p output (not sure if even 720p) except for video player and Angry Birds Star Wars which do look good.
Is this a problem of the Cirago MHL1000 plus 5-> 11 pin converter, which would be solved if I just spent some more bucks on a Samsung HDTV cable with 11 pins? Will the Samsung MHL 2.0 cable for the S4 provide better output for a Note 2 than the Samsung S3/Note 2 cable?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
Okay, I sucked it up and bought the Samsung MHL 2.0 HDTV cable for the S4 and backward compatible with the Note 2. I think I've gotten things as good as it's going to get. Video out is stable and actually at higher resolution than using a Cirago cable and a 11 to 5-pin converter.
I unfortunately have no USB input capability for hard drive access. Is there any adapter to insert in the "circuit" to let me attach a HD to the Note 2 if its MicroUSB is already occupied by the MHL to HDMI cable?

hi
Hello, I have a problem when connecting a peripheral (mouse, keyboard, etc) the screen automatically flips and turns black, saying, which it is connected by hdmi too. that's not right.
otherwise it has explain, does not leave me connect the mouse and keyboard, because the s4 assumed that this also connected the hdmi.
Does anyone here know if Samsung has an official forum or website for Dex related issues? My searches on Google have turned up dead ends.
Also, is there a thread here on XDA to discuss Dex related issues?
I have a Verizon Galaxy Note 9. I bought a Vava USB-C hub on Amazon that gives me HDMI out, an SD card slot, 3 USB type A ports, and a USB C port for charging. I have a Logitech Wireless Keyboard and wireless mouse connected via USB. I'm having some issues with Dex and I would like to know if they are being caused by my hub or are they general Dex related issues:
- All devices must be plugged into the hub prior to plugging it into the phone. Hotplugging devices causes the Dex desktop to lock-up.
- Mouse scrolling breaks everytime I minimize an app. It also breaks in one app when I switch to another app and then right back to the first app.
Is anyone with Samsung Offical Dex Pad having similar issues? Also, is anyone with another unofficial USB-C HDMI connector having similar issues?
Edit: When scrolling for the external mouse "breaks," scrolling while using the Note 9 as a trackpad still works.
There is no such line for the time being.
I use the cheap USB type C to HDMI output.
However, my tv screen only show minimum size (1.5x bigger than phone screen)
any setting I need to do on my phone?

Firstly if your Note 9 is connected to tv and in Dex mode, the tv should automatically, scale it correctly.
(I have found that some, older tv's it's a bit misaligned .)
Secondly, are you in Dex mode or
screen mirroring mode ?
See screenshots.
