Just noticed that the app for CC released yesterday has a backdrop function to show your own images and weather etc.
Anyone had time to play with it yet.

Yeah, I've set Backdrop up on both my Living Room and Bedroom Chromecasts. There are several different features that you can enable/disable such as News and Lifestyle, Weather w/Temp(can choose Celsius or Fahrenheit), Art, Featured Photos, Satellite Images from Google Maps, and you can even have it stream pictures from your Google account with the "Your Photos" option. It's really cool and I'm glad they finally introduced this to us!!
Is there a way to set the time between two pictures? I want them to come faster.

I was wondering the same, except I want it to switch more slowly lol.
No news or lifestyle in Germany. Satellite images, temperature and a weather icon are the only difference.

I'll be releasing a free and paid version of this as soon as the SDK is finalized. The paid version will feature a higher limit on the amount of photos you can cast, customizable timing between photos, more image transitions, and perhaps control over the slideshow itself.
Cool! I will definitely be picking up a picture app as soon as the SDK allows. And I'm sure I am not the only one looking forward to casting their photos to their TV.
Will you be able to pause, skip, back up, zoom etc?
Also, any plans to allow multiple users to create a shared queue from separate phones ... like the YouTube app allows?
Working on controlling the slideshow now. Then I'll be working on adding photos to the slideshow from the same device. I'll look into a shared queue, that's a good idea. Thanks!
Definitely keep us informed on your progress. I like the ability to flick through pictures on the phone and mirroring it on the TV. Is this a function that your app will have exclusive or is it an ability the stock gallery has as well?
Good news and bad news Scott:
The bad news is that flicking through the photos at the end had no effect on which image was shown, they were just in the same order because I set that album to cast. I apologize for making that unclear in the video. However, in the final version, slideshow control will be in the notification dropdown (4.1+ required), or from a controller app.
The good news is that the app you see in the video is the stock gallery. The app I wrote simply adds the Chromecast as a "share to" option at the top. That means that you will have the ability to cast any image system-wide, as long as it has a share button with it.
Why not just use tabcasting with Google+? It's free and you can create whatever album you want.

Tabcasting doesn't work from android.

This is great stuff but I hate being force to select the pictures before chromecasting. I would want this to work just like the native gallery app but with Chromecasting in that I bring up the gallery and select to cast. Then I can flip through pictures and if I stop on one for more then 1 sec (configurable) then it will cast that photo. This was I can flip through pictures casting them on the fly...
I'm looking forward to seeing this app released. Being able to cast the gallery is something I definitely have been looking forward to.

This would require a rewritten "Gallery" app, adding swipe listeners and whatnot. I'm just trying to keep it simple. My app doesn't show up in the app drawer, it's treated more like an extension of Android. I do appreciate your feedback though, it's a great idea. Maybe someone will pick it up.
Wouldn't it be prudent to expect that most, if not all, gallery and slide show apps to have a Chromecast button in the future?
Hi,

I have an android with Allcast, Vget, Plex, Avia..

Anything based on YouTube would be out as live streams are not supported - unless someone's uploading delayed content in chunks.
Was thinking of a solution with a livestream on a website, I thought maybe it would work with vGet + Avia

It'll all depend on the stream format.
When using vGet, sometimes it's advantageous to use the mobile version of a website rather than the desktop version as mobile versions tend to use mobile-optimized MPEG-4 rather than Silverlight or other streaming technologies. Resolution may be reduced, however, so it really depends on the provider.
Popular sites often use m.whatever or mobile.whatever instead of www.whatever
Alternatively you can use a user agent switcher in your browser to send a mobile browser's user agent.
Do you not have OTA HD stations around where you live? I know its not as elegant as the Chromecast, but it should be available for free on your local NBC network.
Short of that, you will need to find a stream in the appropriate x264/AAC format..
YouTube is showing a live feed of the Olympic Games beginning at 12PM EST tomorrow.

EDIT:
Whatever it was which wasn't working when it was stated was removed by YouTube for violations.

Thats NBC main channel....which is not showing any live events, only tape-delayed highlights. And even then, many big events (like ice hockey) will not even be shown on there at all.
I would like to know if anyone found a solution yet.

Broadcasting live might be difficult because of the huge time zone difference. How many people are willing to watch a event after midnight?
Not a Chromecast solution, unfortunately, but the NBC Sports Live Extra app has quite a bit of live content. It'd be nice to find a way to cast it.
EDIT: you can cast some live content from your PC via nbcolympics.com, but you do need to have an account with a participating cable supplier.

At http://www.nbcolympics.com/olympics-live-extra-schedule witch is dated the 7th much is shown to replay because it takes place in the AM. Some are listed as live. I did select on one but didn't follow through with selected my provider, etc. Not sure it an event already completed.
EDIT
Found today's schedule and what's live or not, picked Luge, signed in to my U-Verse account and so far all I've seen is ads! I'm using IE but if happened to be using Chrome, you should be able to cast to the CC. After half dozen or so ads, I give up!

Yeah, it's not great. Can't do fullscreen unless you keep it that way on the computer. And the framerate is terrible - at least this morning.
VPN to Europe
I've had good results using tunnelbear (or your preferred VPN) and viewing coverage from european sites, such as BBC Sport. Both live and on-demand videos available. Surf there in your browser, then cast the tab to chromecast. Not perfect, but no commercials and/or pink-eye distractions!
I have googled how to display just the desktop on gear VR and always come up with results/aps showing how to stream games to the headset. All I want is to display the desktop so i can launch whatever i want (normal youtube, websites etc) all while using the gear vr. Latency is not much of an issue with this i would not think.
Anyone doing this? and if so can you share how (aps etc) or if its already been documented can you point me in the right direction?
Thanks

Not a single person has done this...or wants to?
actually thats not true, with secondsight we're doing exactly this late 2013
here's some poor demo's of it.

We made a custom libsurfaceflinger that renders all 2d apps in SBS mode, we're updating it for android lollipop but it's not ready yet.

First Vid did not play but second one did. I like the idea with the augmented setup. I was more talking about a simple solution like using Splashtop to send the desktop to the Gear VR and then some type of app that splits the streaming screen into SBS mode. Anything like that?
Google with recent Google photos have provided the option to set memories as bg image. However, i am unable to find live wallpapers in wallpapers section.
I downloaded and installed pixel live wallpapers but don't see the Google photos memories option. Anyone able to do it successfully?

yes I'm encountering the same issue also it seems to have happened on the most recent December pixel update for Google The Google photos update a couple days ago added the function and I was utilizing it but as of this morning it's not even available to pick to use I just don't understand why they can't just make the photo frame option like it they do for all the other devices like smart TVs and nest hub work the same for wallpaper on a phone
Hey folks
I bought a Chromecast with Google TV and I am experiencing an issue and I wonder if anyone can save me. I am trying to use an app which I know it wasn't developed for this device, but I know it works because have it installed on an Android TV. The difference is that on Google TV its opening as portrait and sits in the middle of the screen - doesn't stretch, where in the Android TV it expands and takes the whole screen. Same thing happens, for example, with Instagram. I've tried a dozen of apps that supposedly force the orientation, but none of them resolved this issue.
Is there anything that can be done or am I am chasing ghosts?
Thank you in advance
is there maybe an option in the settings of that app to set its orientation?
Unfortunately there isn't

Make the panel completely transparent in the settings, there are many different functions. Sorry, I write through a translator, I'm Russian.
@unleetz
You can try the little app attached
Works fine for me
