Stock recovery - Moto X Q&A

Can't I just get back my stock recovery without flashing the whole firmware ...
I'm already in stock firmware .the only thing I have changed is my recovery (clockwork recovery)
Can't we just flash it like other recoveries

You can use mfastboot to flash stock recovery back on. But you may need to download the SBF of the rom you need, and unzip it to have the stock recovery.img file.
mfastboot flash recovery recovery.img
mfastboot reboot-bootloader
then enter recovery.

Asia retail of 4.4.4 is not available.. Can I flash the recovery.img of other carrier or
Can I flash Asia retail's 4.4.2 recovery.img

Asia Retail not available yet. I guess we'll have to wait or try our luck with the UK firmware.

Will only flashing recovery. Img of UK firmware work on Asia retail @athulele

Quite frankly, I don't know.
But hopefully it should work.
When the android L update arrives, I'm going to try that. If it doesn't work, I'll flash the full system image.

Same here I guess

There's a firmware of Asia retail..but its 4.2.2

There's also a firmware of asia retail 4.4.2
But if you flash that and then upgrade to 4.4.4, you'll hard brick your phone

You can take the long way around...
Download a common version of the Asia Retail and UK that might be available (like 4.4.2 or 4.4 of each), unzip them, and to a file compare on their recoveries...
Example (in windows): FC /bin Recovery.Asia.img Recovery.UK.img
if they match, then you know you can download the UK 4.4.4 and use the recovery from it.
In other words... If Recovery.img in Asia 4.4.2 SBF matches Recovery.img in UK 4.4.2, then recovery in UK 4.4.4 should be the same and usable on Asia 4.4.4.

Actually you can flash the whole UK firmware package on the Asia Retail device.

Hi, I'm latching onto this thread because I have a question (more of a confirmation) that is related to stock recovery.
I'm currently STILL on 4.4 (pre-4.4.2, 4.4.4).
I flashed TWRP and now I can't install the OTA because of this

Yes, as long as you haven't altered much else on the system partition. Like Xposed needs to be properly uninstalling. Original system apps need to be present, etc.

4) Any mods to any system file must be reverted to stock
5) Running the stock odex ROM

If you have at any point of time flashed any 4.4.2 firmware along with the boot loader 30.B3 or 30.B4

You don't need to remove root, however if you are rooted with SlapMyMoto or the like you may want to return to stock.
Apps disabled via settings -> app manager. Can stay disabled. Apps frozen via Titanium Backup may not need to be unfrozen, there were mixed reports from users. Some had to unfreeze, some didn't so it's advised to unfreeze anyway.

Stock ROM Reset | 1.31.651.2 + 1.29.651.10 | Stock Recovery Included

If you are still S-On (or S-off but lazy or tentative) and want a simple way to return to the stock ROM and also be able flash back the stock radio and recovery then this may be for you.
XDA member migascalp gave me the idea of packaging stock ROM's with the aroma installer and include the ability to flash the stock recovery also as sort of a poor mans RUU since so many still are S-on and cannot properly run a RUU.
I have been making these for a few different versions for the GSM model M7 UL:
See here: http://www.htc1guru.com/downloads/stock-rom-downloads/
I got a request to do one for the Sprint Variant, so here it is. To be clear, I personally do not own the Sprint version, so I couldn't test this, however it is a fairly basic script and I only changed the partition info for formatting and copying the data. Thanks to XDA member @(^_^)@ for the partition layout.
If you are looking to run the stock ROM but rooted (You can add root during my installer) or modded then you will probably want one of these:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2368907
Thanks to Indirect for the firmware and stock rom dumps.
Thanks to the.emilio for Radio information.
You simply flash in recovery like installing any other rom.
Here are the screen shots of the Aroma Installer. Sorry for some the bad edits, its really hard to get a good pic taken manually at bootloader or recovery:

It seems like the Radio flashing was a problem, so I have removed it from the package. It will not show up as an option during the installer.
ROM and Recovery flash fine.

Stuck on the "Installing Stock Rom" screen. Won't flash anything, just stays at 0.00%. Just stuck on that screen... I'm HTC Dev-unlocked only, on stock 1.31
Edit: Tried it again, this time with just the recovery, no radio, and it worked fine :good: Still waiting for it to reboot but it looks good.

OK, I know in TWRP when finished you have select to reboot, I didn't insert that into the script.
Odd that it is the Radio that has the issue. I will pull the package for now and update it so there is no choice for Radio install only recovery.
Thanks

That is correct.
Well technically 99% as the stock radio was pulled from the package and can't be installed with the rom and recovery. The radio version shouldn't matter but you can always manually flash the correct radio before running this installer.
This demo is of AT&T Stock ROM and then OTA but the install and procedure is the same. I can't update this video for the roms in the this thread because I don't have a Sprint phone.

Well, I can say that this has worked for me. I flashed the radios, did the reset and back on all stock everything. The only issues are that Qualcomm's Enhanced Location stops working, and my phone randomly rebooted once but that may have been coincidental. I just v wished I had saved the firmware update to dropbox so I wouldn't have to download it again.
My issue was I am s-on and running a 4.3 Rom. There was no way to get the entire firmware package (PRI, firmware, radio's, etc) without being s-off. I noticed revone AND moonshine wouldn't work on the new 1.55hboot so I used this download and flashed it then manually did the OTA update to 4.3. Yes I lost root, yes my Qualcomm would not work, however, I got the FULL firmware update. I then just re-rooted and flashed OMJs deodexed and life is all good. Thank you for making this, it helped me a ton. Now I just gotta wait for an s-off method on hboot 1.55.

if you have at any point upgrade to 4.3 from 4.1 using a rooted rom, back up your 0 folder or this process will wipe it out completely.

Doesn't 0 live in the media folder? I checked the wipe script and it should leave everything in /data/media alone and I thought that would include the 0 folder.

You will not be able to take an ota with a rooted rom. The rom must be unmodified in any way for the ota to succeed in the upgrade. So your only chance is to either unroot the rom or factory restore the rom. If you factory restore, remember to backup your data.

Root=no upgrade. FleetPhone is saying because you are rooted your phone will not update. You can't have root.
Guys....it's not about being rooted. It's about NOT having STOCK RECOVERY, *or* about changes that were made to /system.
Usually just being rooted won't stop you from taking updates. But you can NOT take an update without Stock Recovery. You probably have TWRP recovery still installed - this will prevent the OTA from installing.
Aside from that, any significant modifications to /system, for example Xposed will need to be uninstalled first.
If you can't figure out the problem, use RSD Lite to flash the entire 4.4.2 ROM, then you can take the OTA.
NEVER DOWNGRADE. You can only do this because you are still on 4.4.2 and haven't updated to 4.4.4. Once on 4.4.4, any attempt to downgrade will likely result in a brick.
Good Luck :good:
You must hide root with SuperSU & use STK recovery

Ok, your problem of not being able to take the OTA... that is because of how SlapMyMoto works, and tricks it plays to give you root and write protection disabled.
If you want to take the OTA, you will have no choice but to flash completely back to stock (using RSDLite) and WILL lose root. For how, see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/guide-moto-x-return-to-100-stock-using-t2446515
Keep in mind that with a LOCKED bootloader, you will NOT be able to DISABLE Write Protection when on 4.4.2 and above. If on 4.4.2, PIE or TOWELPIEROOT can be used to root, but write protection will still be enabled, so root and changes made by root apps would be lost at power off/on or "hard boot" and root apps done have the ability to create files in /system and such. There is no root for 4.4.4 with locked bootloader. For more see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/one-stop-shop-how-root-moto-x-confusion-t2826159 its not a very long thread, so please read ALL of it... including Post #70 of that thread
And before you ask... No, if you are on 4.4.4 you can NOT fully downgrade to 4.4.2 or lower. If you are on 4.4.2 you can NOT fully downgrade to 4.4 (aka 4.4.0) or lower! If you try, you will likely brick your phone or set it up to brick with future OTA's. (this is true for locked and Unlocked bootloaders)
IF you have an ATT, Verizon or Republic wireless, you can try the China Middleman thread in the general section to see if you can get a bootloader unlock code if you want to root and disable write protection no matter what ROM is on your phone.

Q&A for [RUU][Firmware]Sprint HTC One | 5.03.651.3 | Encrypted | Decrypted |
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer. Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
trying to root back to stock with ruu 5.03.651.3
tried the process in the thread related to this ruu and the aru wizard keeps getting stuck on 1/6 sending been there for about 20 mins have s-on and bootloader locked
Do we need to flash the modified firmware with the newest RUU if we flashed it the 5.03 RUU??
I have noticed on the last couple RUU's if your hboot did not match the RUU it would not work correctly.
So if you are not sure if the hboot matches flash the Full Firmware as that is the one that has the hboot included.
These are my observations...could just be a coincidence lol hope this answers both your questions.

You should be fine the RUU has the firmware included.
Might be a stupid question, but would it be bad to flash the new firmware with an older ROM that wasn't built with it?
Quick question, do you flash the OTA only.zip with TWRP???

No...it's for devs to use to update their roms if they wish too.
Ahhh, kk
EDIT:
I ran the RUU, snagged the files from the temp folder, I'll run the wizard from there, not sure if the little window is supposed to be there or not.
I never seen that before, freaked me out a little bit...heh
Decided to install the RUU tonight, but this aruwizard is in front of the ruu window and I cant hit anything but the aruwizard window.
Heres a screenie, any ideas????

Do I need to relock my bootloader before running this? This will be my first time trying to restore to stock so I'm a little hesitant. I'm running stock ROM with some xposed modules and busybox installed. Anything special i should know before running? I've read through the thread and nothing stuck out at me as strange except that some people had to flash firmware first. I'm still s-on and this firmware matches my current one so I don't think i will have to flash it first. Any input to make this as easy and less nerve racking is appreciated.
I cant get my pc to recognize my phone when it is in fastboot. I read in another thread that if I update my firmware it will fix the problem. But I can't update firmware since fastboot doesn't work. Im using Windows 8.1, hboot 1.44. Can I get some advice?
How can I flash a .IMG file in my HTC ONE Sprint?
I have downloaded this one:
Sprint_HTC_One_m7wls_5.05.651.2_OTA_only.zip
I have joined the 3 .img files called system1, 2 and 3 with this command:
copy /b system_1.img + system_2.img + system_3.img newsystem.img
I got a .img file of 1.8 GB which I am trying to flash in fastboot, but IT doesn't allow me
what should I do?

That zip is for devs to use as a base to build roms.

Ummm you have to be in fastboot to run the RUU
RUU wizard won't complete update process
When flashing the RUU of the latest firmware update for the HTC One Sprint edition, the process gets hung up at the 4% completion mark while its "checking header". Is there something that I'm missing here?

yes xt1068
1st try to enter twrp and wipe all except external sdcard and try to restore your back up - if this fails you will need to do a full flash of firmware
latest twrp is 2.8.4.0 though, may be why having trouble - if your TWRP fails again do this
click the green 4.4.4 easy installer in my signature
firmware A is your original kitkat
B and C will also work (newer versions)
ALL instruction, drivers, files and firmware are in the zip
read instructions TWICE and the try it out

YES IT WORKED
But unfortunately not via twrp, that annoys me, why even did a backup when its not working anyway?
But thank you for your great tutorial!
But now I have three other questions.
1.How I update twrp to v2.8.4.0 ?
2.How do I root my moto g? Again via pc and coding?
Is there a easier method?
3. How can I prevent the "Update to Android 5.0.2" screen?

Hello all Xda friends,
Thanks to the great team that are running such a great forum and thanks you all for all the amazing hard work and enriching discussions which we all learned from over the years
i have a Droid Turbo xt1254 with LOCKED Boot Loader
running Android 5.1 NO Root / Recovery stock
Stock Rom SU4TL-44 repaired with VerizonWirelessSoftwareUpgradeAssistant_1.4.7
because i was trying so hard to downgrade it back to KitKat But failed for sorry
my Question is if I get root and unlocked the boot loader with sunshine …
Can I get KitKat back ??
and if so after i unlock with sunshine .. will i be able to flash the stock KitKat with RSD ?
I really wanna keep such a great phone since I've been considering selling it because of the really unreliable battery drainer Android 5.1
Thanks A lot in-advance for all your help
Have a great day and a wonderful weekend
If you unlock the bootloader you should indeed be able to flash back to KitKat. However, i f you are looking for battery improvement you should check out computer freaks nodded stock build for battery life. We also have marsallow custom ROMs that for me has gave me great battery life on my turbo
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's my understanding once you are on Lollipop bootloader you can't downgrade back to Kitkat bootloader. You CAN downgrade back to Kitkat from Lollipop -- but when you flash the image, you have to exclude the bootloader portion.

So, if the boot loader is unlocked will i be able to flash stock KitKat back using RSD ?
also what about the radio downgrade will i need to be doing anything to it or it will be downgraded when i flash the KitKat back ?
also what about what our friend ChazzMatt mentioned about excluding the bootloader portion ??
on the other hand can you tell me more about your experience with the "marsallow custom ROMs that for me has gave you great battery life on the turbo" like how long did it last with you and with what type of usage ?
Thanks A lot for you guys and I really appreciate all your help
There is a solid chance of hardbrick flashing with RSD, as if it flash the bootloader you will end with a expensive paperweith. Motorola does not allow to revert to a prior firmware once the bootloader has been updated.
The only solution I see if you still want to go to the kitkat route, is to unlock your bootloader, flash twrp, and then flash this rom with the twrp recovery.: http://forum.xda-developers.com/dro...flashable-kk-rom-computerfreek2744-4-t3268385

The real question is why do you want to flash the bootloader? I wouldn't recommend trying to go backwards with factory images. Even with Nexus devices, it can get tricky. All the battery advantages will come with the OS, which is the ROM and Kernel. I'd just get a good 4.4 ROM if you want KK and flash that. But like previously mentioned, consider other 5.0 or 6.0 ROMs as well. But don't try to go to an older-than-current system image. Hope this helps.

Thank you guys for the info and help
its NOT that i want to flash the boot loader specifically
all i want is the stock KitKat that allowed me 48 hours of power with Wi-Fi on that was amazing
and when i get the Lollipop i lost that and also lost root
So, please let me know what's the best way to get stock KK back
i can unlock with Sunshine and then i need to know what's needed to get KK back

I'm afraid I can't help you there, as I do not own the device, you will have to ask in the specific thread or maybe someone else can chime in. It appears to be the stock droid turbo rom with some bloatware removed.
Now I get theTurbo Boot Loader Unlocked
and I Successfully have TWRP and (Computerfreek274 Stock Android KK 4.4.4 ROM ) installed on it ... Also i have downgraded to the 4.4 radio to work
Now my Question is :
I wonder ?
can I install the stock 4.4.4 now ?? in anyway without re-locking the BootLoader or brick the phone ?

Yes, as long as you don't flash the gpt.bin part.

EDIT:
Look at this thread from over a year, which ironically is actually STILL here in the Moto Droid Turbo forum. It was never moved over to the Moto Maxx forum when they were split September 2015 (two months before the Droid Turbo bootloader was unlocked)... So, even though it says in bold red letters "THIS IS NOT FOR DROID TURBO I REPEAT DONT DO THIS FOR DROID TURBO" -- it actually does now apply to all Quarks.
[Tutorial] How to Flash Different Official Firmware

Why did you not include gpt.bin in the flashing???
Because if you were on kitkat, installed brasil or another firmware and take a OTA to lollipop your gpt.bin version will be greater than the one you'll try to flash and it will FAIL TO FLASH. dont worry just skip that line.

in that thread someone was on CM 12.1 (custom Lollipop 5.1) after having taken the 5.0.2 OTA and now wanted to go back to stock 4.4.4:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62034411&postcount=56
ChazzMatt said:
If you downgrade to Kitkat 4.4.4 do NOT re-flash the gpt.bin file (which has been changed to Lollipop). You flash everything except that -- via ADB.
If you want "Lollipop" in the future, do you mean like 5.1? (at that point, in late July 2015, we still thought Motorola would give the other Quarks 5.1 like they had eventually given the Droid Turbo.) Because you already flashed Lollipop 5.0.2 earlier, so you can re-flash that again very easily, then not have to worry about OTA files.
No need to take the OTA files. You can reflash any upgraded images via ADB that are posted here. Besides, you can't take OTA files safely anyway if any system file has been changed (like custom TWRP recovery). For me, having the custom recovery TWRP outweighs any ability to upgrade via OTA.
Basically if you want to downgrade to Kitkat 4.4.4, yes you can do that, and have all the functionality and attributes of Kitkat. Just don't re-flash the gpt.bin to a downgrade.
