I am starting to get the itch to root, but do not want to unlock the bootloader and using features and warranty. Is there any progress being made on finding an exploit? Any devs working on it? I'm hoping that one comes soon because I am seriously missing some root features and apps.
I see those bounty threads every once in a while?
Should one of those be started? COuld the expedite a solution?
same here
Likewise. I like the idea of a bounty thread
Honestly, if I would be a developer and working on a root exploit, I sure as hell wouldn't make it public and just release it when it's done.
Otherwise that developer will be nagged constantly by impatient people who demand a nearby release and expect him to give up his work- and social life until it's done.
But the bounty thing is a good idea. Whoever releases a working root exploit first should receive the money.
What he said.
Same here..anxiously waiting for root
Hope somebody try something http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/general/rooting-z3-locked-bootloader-t2907674/post56066434
I have found some interesting things but not played more:
Putting su to data/local/tmp we are abble to login like diferent users (usb user, modem user, system user...). I had look into /dev path and found /dev/usb_accessory have perms rw-rw--- and user-group is root-usb... so maybe we can research for possible exploit in usb_accessory... just example Allso /dev/smem is word writeable so maybe we can reasearch in smem...
Bounty! Bounty! Bounty!
Kindly u try dear.its a request from a noob...we are all desperate to get root this device.u are a recognize developer...plz try for all of us

Qft. Great initiative! Please start the thread - there are nice templates put there from other phones you could basically just copy/paste. I'd gladly donate to whoever finds an exploit first!
Same here. I would be happy to donate.
Same I'd donate happily for a perfect locked rooted phone
I would also be very happy to donate!

Somebody try z2 stock rootable kernel and post here last_kmsg ?
Interested to know... if a root is found for Kitkat on the Z3C, would it still be valid for Lollipop come next year? Or would the devs need to start all over again?
(sorry if it's a daft question!)
p.s. If someone starts a bounty thread, I'll be donating for sure :good:
I have found something, hope somebody get idea exploiting this:
1. remounted all partitions to read only mode by command "/data/local/tmp/su -l system ; echo u > /proc/sysrq-trigger" which caused kernel crash with null pointer dereference
2. this is a last_kmsg log -> http://pastebin.com/0XXqL1GM
If you have idea let me know!

As Coburn64 said: There is a howto about getting root on the tattoo. But I would say: If you don't know what root is, you don't want to do it AT THE MOMENT. In general root will make us able to put custom roms on the tattoo (hopefully) and will enable us to use some programs that otherwise wouldn't run (for example sharing tattoos internetconnection over WLAN with a Laptop) - but not at this time. At the moment getting root doesn't bring anything to the normal user and getting root is not easy at the moment!

We will try to answer all your questions here. And please keep the original thread nice and clean. Thanks to jenny we now have a thread that can be open for answers.
I hope jenny is willing to update the 1st post with faq's and alike. (i will try to provide them as much as possible). Thanks to knightrocker we have a lot of good basic stuff to tell about
So lets discuss and ask
p.s. yes i will be annoyed by people who don't read and ask the same question that has already been answered (probably multiple times )
So how do I root my IS? can someone give me a link please?

Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA App
Hmmm did a bit of reading on kexec. Timbo i have a question, u said u are trying to use it, but u cant boot into it.
Maybe that is because it is already being used? From what i read, kexec sounds a LOT like the fastboot option on htc's to me. And i don think u can overlap two kernels over the original one. Maybe thats why it was never tried
Please correct me if im wrong.

Knightrocker just wait mate we are busy with it
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA Premium App
I must say u: im not that much of a linux programmer, mainly tester, but getting to know it. We are just trying to use it (or misuse if u want) to run our code.
Dont know exactly how it works, but it is useable to bypass some of the HTC security that is build in. But like u said: its never been used before, but thats only partial true. It is being used on the X10, and 4 days ago they announced that they succesfull used it to run there own kernel and roms.
Currently there are people working on it and as usual there are only just a few persons who really know what there doing (not me included ) so also i have to wait. Just have a little more know how because i'm involved with it
As soon as i know how it exactly works i am willing to document it (if allowed by the devs though) because maybe we dont want HTC to know how we do it exactly, because it will probably be to easy to disabled again haha.
Heres a starter for the faq
Root, s-off what does that mean?
If you don’t know what root is, go away and do some research. Not going to cover that.
Temp-root/shell-root: By using the psneuter exploit we can get temp-root. This allows us to execute more commands and gives us access to the whole system.
S-on/S-off: Disable the security that is also known as the NAND lock. When S-on is enabled it prevents us to write to the system partition (and various others). They can be written but it will be discarded when you reboot. So we see it as not writeable.
How do I check if im s-on?
Disable the fastboot option in setting > application. Shutdown. Hold down vol-down + powerbutton until you get to a white screen. Read the first line. Should say something like “Vivo bla bla S-ON”. If it says you are S-OFF you are lucky .
What is responsible for the s-on?
The radio firmware (not accesable trough the system directly) sets an flag (secu_flag) to 1 or 0, 1 for s-on, 0 for s-off. To get s-offed we somehow need to change that flag. Currently not possible for our phones.
The kexec was allredy used on the Motorola Milestone, but the Radio was always hanging. But possibily it can help you guys looking at the sources http://and-developers.com/custom_rom:2ndboot
Nice info! Have not looked so good at it (yet) so will do now.
Further more: i know about the X10 since one of there developers is on our team too. So have not looked at other phones yet who uses it
Had an Milestone before my Desire
You can ask the guys on #milestone-modding on freenode on IRC if you need help, they made a lot of experience with this methode since more than six month.

Then how it is possible to have a permanent root with S-ON on other devices like DHD?
The way I understood it,is that we can get root privileges but they vanish once we reboot cause they only existed in a volatile memory (since we can't write the code into the non-volatile area because of the S-ON)
This makes me ask: What's a permanent root then?
It is possible on other devices because it (the radio) can be somewhat accessed within userspace (kernel/programs) and than sets the flag to s-off. But it is required to exploit the radio so that it will do what we say. All current know exploits don't work on our phone. So its currently not possible on the new HTC devices.
So it is possible to access certain parts of the phone that are locked. but it requires a lot of skill to get there and than you must find something useable to change the flag.
Permanent root is what it says: stay root even after reboot There were times (mostly early cracking of new (currently old) devices) that people could temporary turn of the flag, set root in the system and that way gain permanent root. But most of the time your not very far away from fully s-off.

Fancy a beer?
@androf : lol bro, ur crazy.
I have more questions if some1 dosent mind answering. From what i read, kexec skips the firmware part, thus we skip security. But about flashing a custom recovery? Will kexec still be effective or will u use it just to root and then chuck it?

p.s. you can pm me ofc when u have questions, but i think that you should post them here, so other people can learn too. I call BS on this, the file download site only lets you dowload if you complete a competition (where the entries cost £5 each), or you buy a premium credit.
Also notice how the three comments sound very similar and are posted within 5 mins of the article. Google isnt that fast at indexing.
I think it is someone out to make a quick buck on people looking for root on this device.

It's definitely a scam, there was a tutorial on the tube a week ago which also pointed to this location and wanted you to participate in a so called "survey" before letting you download anything.
BEWARE!!
Well it got me creating a new e-mail address for spam mails, completing one of the surveys, only to end up looking like a jackass. Completing the survey didn't bring forth any download link.
Before starting the survey I studied the source code of the site, including some .JS files, and couldn't find any sign of code to generate the download link, so I guess I was warned.
As far as i know, there is not a root exploid for our LG P880
The only way to get a reliable root function on our device is to develop it here.
I tried several existing methods to do it but with no luck.
I think we need to extract the full rom implement the root function and upload it back to the device or...
Try to develop a update.xxx with or without CWM and use this to root or...
Maybe we can use NVFLASH to reach our goal...
The word is to our LG experts here on the board who already rooted a LG, and give us a direction to go to...
Hopefully we get a breakthrough soon because i realy need to kill some autostarts here...
I'm counting on xda dev right now, hope someone can root this device soon. ^^
What about plain root privilege escalation bugs? I'm thinking of Mempodipper, which is younger than the 2.6.39.4 kernel on the O4X. I would try it myself, but I don't have a toolchain for the android platform, and didn't want to buy the C4Droid App for nothing. ^^

You'll first need to unlock the bootloader and then wait for chainfire's magic. It is possible to root through fastboot also so there is a good chance that you'll get root before a custom recovery.
Due to seamless updates, things have changed a bit so it'll take some time to be figured out

This is the first device with Android's new partition layout. Having looked at the firmwares and at running devices (remotely), I have some ideas on how to do it.
However, it will be a while before I have SuperSU fixed up. The changes will be quite a bit of work and testing, and doing so remotely will make that take significantly longer. So I'm just going to wait for my own device, but as they aren't available in my country, it has to be shipped from another country and go through customs. I don't expect my device to arrive for another week or two.
In the meantime, it's always possible someone else releases root for it.
I saw @jcase and @Dees_Troy have been playing with TWRP, to me it seems wholly possible to fix that up (mostly) as well. But even if TWRP is released tomorrow, using the existing SuperSU ZIP will not work on it, due to all the breaking changes in Android 7.1.

If your intent was truly altruistic, you wouldn't feel the "burden" of stating it publicly. So no, it doesn't matter.

Ah its so funny to what people write after all these years of people spending their own time to work out back doors and exploits to enable root / Xposed / Custom bootloaders / Kernels / Recoveries.
People can't just wait and see and if the devs ask for help or testers just be part of it, throwing a few dollars at them is not going to push things forward . . . let them do what they want to do its their project / baby and it will happen when it does.
Support the devs after the fact dont try and attempt to influence them into it with beer money.
Some of y'all are ridiculous! The guy made a harmless statement and didn't mean anything negative by it. And what do all of the analytical geekers do? Just that... Analyze his comment to the bone and find all sorts of self-serving intent within it. Blows my mind...

Hey I've unlocked my bootloader, but with the different partition layout and file based encryption (assuming this device uses that), is there any chance I'll have to erase my data and start over for root?
Because I got the 128GB model and I'm ready to start filling up with apps and keep a big portion of my Google Play music library to save on data and everything but I don't want to do it if there's a real possibility I'll have to erase everything if to achieve root.
I guess it is possible to use a custom recovery (once they come out) to backup, but that'll be a huge backup if I start keeping all my music to the device.

What ever but tour the same guys who's going to be asking for OTAs and asking devs to do this that and the other as fast as humanly possible.
If you want it that bad do it your self or sit and wait like a good little child.
No dev is going to rush something because of some people in a forum get a grip, like I said it's their time and it will be ready when it's ready.
You might think I'm going off on one but read the rules page for Christ's sakes.

The chance you'll have to erase is always present when rooting. Even when your device is fully prepared something may go wrong. At least you have already unlocked your bootloader, which reduces that chance.
File-based encryption will probably not be a reason to for wiping, though. It works fine in the dev version of SuperSU with Android 7.0 on a 5X.

I know this is early days given the device is still a couple of days away from being officially released, however so far root is not looking good for the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.
As we know the complexities of Huawei not releasing bootloader unlock codes has made things difficult, but I'm told by no means impossible. Sites like Funky Huawei claim to be able to provide bootloader unlock codes - but at a cost. We also potentially have the barrier of the OEM unlock option being greyed out which may make us fall at the first hurdle.
Therefore the way I see things we need:
- to be able to select OEM unlocking in the developer options (either after the 26th October we may be able to, or this may require some clever developer to provide a workaround...)
- to be able to unlock our bootloaders
- Potentially for twrp to be made available for our device, which would hopefully open us to the option of custom roms and perhaps flashing firmware updates etc.
- and last but not least, for root with Magisk (ideally this root method due to the great modules that it has!)
It would be AMAZING if we can root and if custom roms started being made for this phone, in time of course, given it has not been fully released yet. But regardless I wished to open this thread and perhaps we could start to pledge money to entice a dev to work on this for us.
I'll kick this off and would pledge £30 for TWRP and Magisk root working on this phone. I'm not sure how this bounty thing normally works and so if forum moderators have anything issues with this just let me know!
If you are serious about a pledge then post here and I'll update this thread.
If you're a dev then let me know how these things work!
Cheers
UPDATE:
Guys, it really isn't looking good. See attached screenshot of response from Huawei regarding the bootloader unlocking and the OEM Unlock option being greyed out in developer settings. As far as I understand it, that option is crucial and seems Huawei won;t even be letting that be an option, let alone provide unlock codes.
I have just had to return my Mate 20 Pro due tue screen uniformity issues and to be honest I won't be getting a replacement (I don't think).
It saddens me, but if anyone wishes to take over this thread/bounty just feel free to copy the pledges posted here and perhaps start a new thread.
Bounty pledges:
cd993 - £30
Railey - £22
Havokk -£20
Maddinuser - £22
WeWa2013 - £30
Asbogdan - £22
TOTAL = £146
Reserved....
Reserved - hopefully for the root method etc.

Method currently private. I can't recommend buying this phone and hoping for a root method based on my knowledge so far.

Oh what a nice surprise!!
Fully appreciate the method is private at present.
Would you mind PM'ing me for a little extra detail? (e.g. The steps you took, what form of root etc.) that'd be very much appreciated.
Maybe @topjohnwu could help you out and offer some assistance in getting Magisk working ?

Sorry, can't. I can say that it's not something that just anyone can do.
I can say that buying the phone pre-rooted will be your best chance of having a rooted device.
More details on that will be coming in the near future.

OK no worries, again that's appreciated.
Though one last question if I may, do you feel it is possible to flash prerooted firmware via Funky Huawei etc?

Flashing stock firmware is possible, but not pre-rooted firmware, at least for now.
It's a new phone so research is ongoing.

With a root shell, based on it's capability, it is possible to install Magisk with it. I'll have to see how it ends up to be before I can give a definite answer how I can achieve it.

25 euro in for the ride.
I have conditions for my pledge...so I'll remove this post if conditions for either scenario aren't met:
* $50 AUD if:
- Tested and trialed root method is delivered on/before before Dec 7th
- The phone does NOT LOSE functionality upon root (eg: VoLTE, camera limitations, poor phone or wifi single signal etc)
Unlike some others who back out late in the piece, I'm good for it
