Has anyone tried the sunshine app on the new moto x? Mainly asking Verizon users. Thinking about trying it because it does clearly say it will work on some 4.4.4 devices.

Not yet, they just recently added Moto G, supposedly they are currently working on Moto X 2014
There is support for first gen moto x but the website and the thread you directed me to makes no mention of the 2gen. moto x.
It says it MAY work on some 4.4.4 devices and to go ahead and try but I don't want to break anything. I'll let someone else be the guinea pig.

I just tried the app to see the error message. Answer is no..you have to at least be rooted for the app to have a chance. Right now there is no root method for this device :/

It doesn't work on 2014 X. The "some 4.4.4 devices" it worked on previously had root and lost it (that I can tell).

I assume jcase the creator did and it didn't work. He found another root exploit but isn't going to release it.
I wanna try. Will it mess my phone up?

no, that vulnerability has been patched, so if something you'll test your phone againsts that vulnerability and you'll fail (so you won't mess anything up)
Really sucks he wont help us out with 4.4. Being a family guy with a career...I understand. But damn...would love root on this thing

I hope I'm not jumping the gun here, I did a while back and jcasr corrected me. But, if you read the bounty thread in the general section, he's 99.5% sure that he has figured out how to root 4.4 (may only be att though) without burning up an additional exploit... He is working on it and said he will release it when he gets a copy of the att ota.
Moto X rocking 4.4
I was thinking about getting a Moto X due to having an mf3 locked down bootloader. However, it looks like the development is completely dead for this device. Is the bootloader completely locked down for the AT&T version? Just wondering why these forums are so dead. What about rooting with 4.4.2? Thanks

They're dead because the stock software is just that good. There is no real need to hack it up because it's fine as it is.
That's what I figured.. Is there any problems with rooting 4.2.2?

Use RockMyMoto for 4.2.2. Use SlapMyMoto if going to 4.4.
So with the new 4.4.2 slap my Moto works perfectly rooting the phone?

Yes, but he's asking about root. If he's flashing 4.4.2 ROMs, he's already rooted and it's a moot point.
I recently ordered a GSM unlocked moto x from motomaker and I was wondering if the gem unlocked version's boot loader is unlockable. I plan to get a sim card from T-Mobile soon, if that info is useful at all. Thanks in advance guys!

Yes, it is unlockable: I just did mine this evening! However, it will void the warranty..but hey, I sometimes live dangerously.

How did you unlock it? And was it on android 4.4?
More than likely it still comes with 4.2. You unlock it by visiting Motorola Unlock Bootloader page. It lists all the steps needed. Simple process, should take no more than 10 minutes.
Btw, the T Mobile Moto maker version comes with a T Mobile SIM inside already. Just has to be activated.

Forgive me for being such a newbie, but if you unlocked it while it was 4.2.2, and updated it to 4.4, it remains unlocked? And what do you plan to do now that you've unlocked it?
It remains unlocked regardless of which version. Now that you are unlocked. You may install TWRP and superSU. To gain root privileges and get xposed framework with gravity box. Which remains the best combo so far for most who have rooted and are on 4.4.

I reinstalled mine so no can do, it might not have been 4.4.2 exactly but I know it was at least 4.4 for sure.
More than likely 4.4, we are all awaiting the arrival of 4.4.2 and a better camera though.

Is that expected to change any time soon? I know in the past the dev community has had these things hacked apart like 24 hours after launch. We're now months into the launch of the Moto X and we only recently even got root. So I guess my question is twofold:
1. Is there a reason that the Moto X has proven so darned hard to unlock?
2. What are the limitations of having a locked (but rooted) device as far as custom ROMs, kernels, bootloaders, recoveries, etc.? Coming from a Galaxy Nexus that I was able to fully unlock and root on day one, I have no idea what's accessible via rooting vs. via unlocking. It all just kind of felt the same to me.
N00b questions I know, but I'd really like to know what I can and can't do with this VZW Moto X of mine.

All I can say is the Bionic and Galaxy S4 both on VZW have not been unlocked and never will be.
Either buy the overpriced Dev edition or the unlockable gsm version... when it is discounted again.

I didn't get it in the mail yet but I was told it's on the ota 4.4.2
just did mine last week, same model, same 4.4.2, first you have to get it unlocked through the motorola web site, then follow the unlocking guide posted, takes about 5 minutes total to root and install exposed
How can I find out about updates for an unlocked Moto X? Motorola said contact the carrier but why? It's not carrier branded. @sd_shadow can u explain?

Ok soo my phone hasn't got any updates past Android 4.4.2, all the other 1st gen Moto X's got 2 after that. Motorola keeps telling me to contact my carrier but there's a slight problem with that. Alltel was my carrier but they got bought out by at&t so I switched to h2o. My Moto X is carrier unlocked tho, how would that affect system updates?

No update has been push out for my version of the X tho. It makes no since why they tell me to contact my carrier, because mine doesn't, have a carrier logo on the back nor does one come up when you turn it on. The system version says something about acg. I looked at a chart on Motorola's website, under acg regional carriers it says 4.4.4 "coming soon" its really confusing
