This is my first Sony phone and so far so good, but I can't figure out how to safely eject it when I want to disconnect it from the usb on my PC. Am I missing something obvious here?
Thanks for an explanation or fix for this in advance.
Just eject it. I ejected over thousand times.

If the device is set to MTP mode, it can simply be unplugged because all file system accesses are abstracted. Mass storage mode (MSC) is basically block level access, so data loss may occur if the host isn't properly disconnected and thus the file system dismounted before the device is unplugged. Most people using Windows are probably also using MTP mode, so there's not much that could go wrong. That's the same way most digital cameras or MP3 players work for example.

I needed to transfer some files from my N1 to my Pc, so I connected it to my PC using the cable. I was expecting the black mounting screen prompting me to mount the SD card, but nothing happened. I restarted my device twice, but the case is still the same. What could have been wrong? I have not installed any app within this time, not removed any. I have used it in just ordinary daily manner, messaging and calling and nothing else. My N1 runs on Froyo, OTA. No jailbreak.
Please help. Thank you
u need to assign a drive letter to your SD card
Noob answer: is it on the status pulldown bar?
Do you have USB Debugging enabled?
Does the phone recognise that it's been plugged in (ie start charging)?
Similar problem
I am having a similar problem with my N1 running CM6 stable. When I turn off USB debugging and plug the phone into my Win7 laptop, I get the USB connected screen, but when I turn on USB storage the SD drive doesn't mount i.e. I cannot see/access the drive in Windows 7. The N1 status bar says USB storage is on.
Under Device Manager, the N1 shows up as Android Phone-->Android ADB Interface with driver version 2.0.10.2 dated 11/08/2009.
Any help would be much appreciated.

No, THIS is exactly the problem, the phone dies not recognise that it has been connected to a computer. It does start charging, but no sign of SD memory mount/unmount. Nothing. Just simply charging.

No, USB debugging is not enabled. I double checked it.
I guess that Windows also doesn't recognize the phone as anything (Device Manager doesn't show anything new plugged in)?
In that case, enable USB Debugging, and see if the phone is recognized by Windows.
If it is - the problem is somewhere in SW.
If it isn't - then it might be a faulty USB cable or connector (from any side - phone or PC).
same thing happens to me from time to time. restart your computer and that should fix your problem.

I just discovered today If I put my phone into USB development mode the write speeds for the internal and external SD increase by a VERY VERY huge margin!!
Example;
I have a 238MB folder that contains 2,000 files.. placing that on the internal sd by not activating mount USB takes about 15mins, using USB mode takes something like 4mins... Also writing my movies gives me an average of 7.50~8.0MB/s as compared to something like 2.5mb/s if not mounted via USB mode..
Is this a phone/andriod issue or probably my PC detecting it as 1.1 if not mounted as a USB ?
Usb debug mode is slow, kies mode is slow.

USB debug mode gives me 1:1 speeds with Mass storage mode.
Those speeds are in the phone only? Or are you talking about copying files from computer to the phone?

PC to Phone
How do you change the mode?
Mine is stuck on Mass Storage and I see no option about USB Settings (in Settings/About phone).
I'm on JPk. Was planning to backup phone via kies and go to JPO.
Its in wireless and networks for froyo

Yeah I know its gone. Is it possible to restore this functionality in ICS? I know virtually nothing of Android programming otherwise I'd attempt to tackle this missing feature.
Plug it into a wall. That's charge only
#unseen
No kidding?
Aside from that, if I don't have my charger with me and a have a data cable I can plug it into my computer to charge. Normally this is not a problem but here at work we aren't allowed to connect "personal" devices to work computers. Doing this causes the SD cards to mount. I don't want the work spies (yes they do monitor us closely) to see drives being mounted. Fine I can unmount them via Windows. The problem with that even though they are unmounted the phone is unable to access either SD card until I unplug it. I just want to charge the phone and I don't always have a charger with me.
Edit:
Well I have somewhat of a work-around. If I put the Bionic USB into MTP mode and plug it into my workstation (at work) it will charge if USB debugging is enabled and it won't connect any drives. With that I can charge and I can simultaneously access internal or external SD cards.
Looking through system files there is an apk that says chargeonly.APk. maybe that's the key

I used QuickShortcutMaker to create a shortcut to the Charge Only mode which that APK refers to. When I ran it, the screen with the battery came up that you see when you are charging it while the phone is turned off. I then plugged it into the computer, and it mounted both of the SD cards, even while still showing the charge screen. It appears that this isn't really going to work the way he wants.
MTP doesn't mount the drives as drives per se. It mounts as a media device, which shouldn't show up the same way on the computer as drives obviously. This is the de facto charge only mode in ICS, though it does stuff other than charge. PTP mode should work more or less the same way too. I think that MTP can interface with programs like Windows Media Player and Winamp, while PTP mode is for picture programs.

Yeah when I plug in with MTP I do get a Media Player type icon in the systray. If I click on that I get the auto-run type screen and select "take no action" and the icon goes away and it will continue to charge (so long as USB debug mode is on). I tried select the "always take this action" option but for some reason it doesn't remember it. I think it has something to do with the way work has the group policies setup.

FWIW - I was struggling with this, as I needed to charge my phone, but wanted to listen to music...
Using the "Camera(PTP)" mode serves the same purpose as "Charge Only", in that I can still access my SD Card from the phone, and it charges fine.
Hope this helps!

I noticed that my phone is no longer recognized as a removable flash drive when connected to USB (like my all old devices). But the problem is that copying files to it takes too much time. How to remove this ****ty "Portable Device" way of recognizing my Z1 !?? I want the old "removable flash drive" way of recognizing, AT LEAST for my SD card. I don't care for the internal memory, but I don't want to see my microSD recognized as a Portable Device and I don't want to wait the whole day for transfering only one folder of music.

Thank you. Somebody told me that this can't be changed but after switching to mass storage my SD card now works normally. Unfortunately, now I can't see my internal storage. But I'll switch to MTP when I want to access my internal storage.

Anybody have a problem with an external storage disconnecting and reconnecting endlessly when you plug it in, and then after you unplug it, notifications still keep appearing which say it's connecting and disconnecting? The same storage thumb drive can also plug into the PC - and it always stays connected and doing a check on it from the PC shows there is no corruption to the drive or the files thereon. I have a huge number of files on that drive... maybe there is a limit with the Android OS? Or maybe my phone is trying to scan all the files every time I plug it in and is getting overwhelmed? Any ideas?
