[FIX] [Android 5.0 Preview LPX13D] Green/purple video in browser (chrome) - Nexus 5 General

I just thought i would share with you guys a fix i have been looking in to since installing the new LPX13D preview a few days ago.
Quit a lot of videos that are viewed inside of browsers try to use the vp9 codec, and by the look of things it is not yet fully supported (both in chrome and the android /framework itself).
I have spent hours of my time trying to figure this out, simply because it was just bugging me. I could have easily just watched the video in the YouTube app itself which seems to work just fine.
This fix is assuming that you use the chrome browser on your device.
Open up the browser and type in to the address bar chrome://flags
Next, find the option "Disable media source API" and press enable so it now says disable.
Now find the option for "Enable GPU rasterization" and set it to "Force-enabled for all layers"
That's it, now you can watch and enjoy your videos without the green/purple tint overlaying them.

Thanks! It worked like a charm

Awesome. Worked like a charm. Thanks.

permanent fix
Is there anyway that there is a more permanent fix for this. I am on CyanogenMod 12 nightlies and I still have that problem...

Thank you so much for this fix! Too bad this does not work inside feedly where I still get the pink tint in embedded videos

[Q] unable to play video from gallery

I'm having a problem playing videos from the gallery app.
I can see them in the gallery, but when I click on them I get a message saying "Unable to play video".
If I try to open it from Astro I get "File type <WHATEVER> not found"
However, if I open Rockplayer it works fine. I'm assuming it's because I used TI to delete the stock video player app (thinking rock would just take over), but I can't say for sure.
Has anyone else seen this? If possible can someone link me to the original video player app so I don't have to flash back to stock to get it?
Did you try clearing the defaults in settings?
Unless I am thinking of the wrong thing (settings > applications > manage) I have the following options that sound like they could be applicable (meaning there might be some I'm overlooking):
com.samsung.mobilevideo
com.sec.android.app.videoplayer
rockplayer
none have any defaults set.
is there a way to just globablly reset the defaults?
problem solved
Go to settings, all programs, gallary setting, clear data, force stop if it is currently running, disable the app, wait for few seconds and again enable the app, on first start it will ask default video player select whatever u want and enjoy.
Problem may be the default vedeo player set earlier is uninstalled by u. Thanx
I am having a very similar issue. I record a video. 30 seconds long. I stop recording tap the image of what I recorded, it opens gallery.- I select to play the video. the video opens. I click play and a grey message comes up (unable to Play Video) the standard played just fine. I made no changes to the phone after rooting and installing custom rom. it worked fine. now all the sudden. it will not play videos. (only videos I recorded on the phone) everything else such as web and youtube work fine. this is not the first time I have run into this the only option was to install a retail rom and everything worked great. this is a Samsung galaxy s5 g900v I have spent over thre hours on google and bind searching for a solution and I can tell you..it would seem this is an issue many people are having. I don't like VLC I like the stock player. though I dont know what it is called but I have this Rom (VZW_BPB1_ODEX_DEODEX_V9) it has no file browser and no purple video Icon. (thats the one I dont know the name of) and I am not sure what this rom uses to play video. ..so if anyone has a solution please post it. I tried the above and they did not work. I also tried solutions that were offered on other sites to no avail.

Can't multitask in full screen mode

When I first got my Chromecast, I was able to play a video (on hulu for example) in fullscreen mode, then alt tab back to Chrome so I could still use my laptop while casting to the TV in full screen.
In the past week, it no longer works. When I alt tab, it automatically goes out of full screen mode. So now I have to have my laptop playing the video in fullscreen if I want to cast it in fullscreen to the TV.
I can't find anything in my searches about this happening to anyone else when I google the problem. Has anyone else run across this issue?
Thanks

What do I reinstall? I've reinstalled the cast extension and that didn't fix it. I have the most current version of Chrome. I can only thing to uninstall and reinstall Chrome to see if that fixes the problem.

My guess is this is related to the Flash Player or the player on the site that you are using. I have seen this happen on my two monitor setup where when I go to the second screen it breaks out of full screen mode on the first monitor. I'm pretty sure all i had to do was restart my machine. But I would try reinstalling Flash, clearing cache, cookies, etc.
Do you see the same behavior when you are not using Chromecast?
Good luck.

It happens with any video, whether casting or not. I used to be able to watch Hulu.com in fullscreen and cast it to the tv, then I could alt tab to another tab to check FB or something. Now it doesn't work. I've tried hulu, youtube, and some other video sites and they all the the same thing. When you hit Alt they immediately go back to the small screen page. I've rebooted my computer and reinstalled the Cast extension. Wondering if I need to reinstall Chrome. It did crash one me a few times this weekend, though not in the past couple of days.

I have had a similar issue. I received mine on Tuesday and the first day full screen worked for espn and I was able to Alt+Tab to continue browsing. Last night, I tried to do the same thing but It would only display a picture of the tab with the embedded video (when I would go to full screen, the embedded video was black with the tab content around it. when I would exit full screen the embedded video began playing again.) Essentially, I can no longer go into full screen mode for any flash based video (tried with NFL network too). Mine did an update first thing when I turned it on yesterday. I didn't write down the original version I had nor what it updated to. My flash player also updated recently but I think that was before I tried it for the first time. I did not try to reboot my machine or reinstall flash / chrome but I did attempt to do it from 2 different computers on my network and both suffered from the same issue.

I found a post on another forum that helped me resolve the issue. In your google chrome browser (assuming that's what you are using), type in about://plugins. Click on the Details icon (+) on the far right of the Plugins title bar. Look for Adobe flash and you probably have 2 plugins listed. Look for pepflashplayer.dll . It should be listed in the location section. Click on disable. You may need to restart the browser. Try your fullscreen again.
That fixed it for me, so I hope it fixes it for you.
I just found a pretty neat trick to do fullscreen.
Install the "Chrome Toolbox" which allows you to open flash videos by themselves, separate from anything else on that webpage.
Go to the page with the flash video you are playing. Cast that tab. Hover over the video and an icon will appear to allow you to put it on its own window. Chromecast will now only show the video, same as if you went fullscreen. Video quality seems better when the window is not minimized.

Toolbox Pop-out link??
Hi guys!
Any chance of a link to the Chrome Toolbox in the app store? The one I'm looking at is probably not the one I'm looking for.
BTW, Alt-Tab is working for me, but the full-screen video is playing in the background so I can see it in place of the Windows taskbar. I can move about the desktop though

Unfortunately Chrome Toolbox doesn't work on Windows 8? And isn't available anymore anyway?
This is really annoying. Just got Chromecast.
But when casting a tab of full screen video on certain websites and I move from the tab it reverts to its original frame.
Basically I just want to be able to play full screen content from sites like BBC's iPlayer while doing other things on the computer.
Fiddling with flash plugins doesn't seem to change it. I looked for other possibly relevant extensions in the web store but none really worked.
This seems to me a fundamental but should be pretty simple problem for Google to fix.
Any other ideas now?
Thanks, Tom

Not sure about Windows 8, but in 7 I am pretty sure I can hit the Windows key + D which will minimize the browser and allow me to continue what I am doing.

I like that "feature" - my old ATI TV tuner card used to have that.

It seems to depend on how the player achieves full-screen. Some sites have a full-screen option from the browser level, and that seems to behave differently (also sometimes different resolution) than using the full-screen/zoom option in the player.
Good example is www.BabyFirstTV.com
The blue-background full-screen button just full-screens the video in the tab and shows the Exit Fullscreen button when casted.
The full-screen button in the player window (bottom right corner) make the video full-desktop size (and replaces my desktop background), and doesn't show the (annoying) Exit Fullscreen button. The bottom does get cut off, likely because my desktop is 1920x1200 so I'm losing the bottom 180 pixels.
For me at least, either method allows me to Alt-Tab to another application without messing up the Chromecast playback though.

Can you try it on www.babyfirsttv.com ? I'm guessing any browser/tab-level zoom will depend on how the site is coded.

Yeah, if it takes up just the tab it's ok, but when going completely full screen it doesn't stay like that if I move... And unfortunately many sites with video, like the ones I want to use, only have that option.

[Q] Chrome 39 or Lollipop Youtube Link Issue

Having an issue and not sure if its a Chrome 39 issue or Lollipop issue and was looking for some help or some people to test.
When you open a embedded YouTube link in chrome it opens the mobile YouTube web view in another tab instead of opening the YouTube app. I tested the same link on my Note 4 and it works properly, so I'm not sure were the issue is.
Example:http://www.theverge.com/2014/11/14/...-and-kings-divergent-insurgent-bosch-and-more
In the embedded YouTube view if you click the title in the embedded view it should open the YouTube app instead it opens another tab with YouTube web view.
I have already cleared defaults, cache and date on both YouTube app and chrome app to verify that is not the issue.
Any suggestions would be appreciated or I guess confirmation that this is happening to other people so I can file a bug report.
same issue for me
same issue on nexus 5, lollipop, chrome 39
I also have cleared defaults and did factory reset but it did not work
Works as expected on my N5. It plays in the current tab unless you hit the YouTube link in the upper left corner.
Same issue here with a Nexus 4.
I noticed sometimes it works (i.e. from a google search) sometimes not (like in the link posted by the op)
I'm having the same issue on my Nexus 5. Instead of opening videos in the app, it's sending me to the mobile YouTube page in the browser. Cleared app defaults in YouTube, for Chrome that button is greyed out.
i'm having this same issue on my nexus 6. its pretty annoying
I noticed the problem is fixed when you deactivate "merge tabs and apps". It is connected with the new tabs in multitasking feature.
yup noticed that too.. but i want to keep my tabs merged with recents... i don't know if this is by design or an oversight. i'm hoping google isn't thinking that opening in a new tab is just as good as opening in an app.

[Q] YouTube HD not sticking?

Hi I've been constantly using YouTube a lot and I'm not sure if I'm the only one seeing this issue but it's very very annoying. The issue with YouTube is that for every video I play no matter what I always have to click on either 720p, 1080p, or 1440p if available HD option for every you tube video I play no matter what. I remembered before all you had to do is pick 1080p and that's it it sticks for every video even when you exit the app and launch it the next day it's still was on 1080p so I'm wondering why am I going through this? Did you YouTube change it up? Are any of you guys experiencing this?
I think it auto changes based on what it "thinks" your network can handle.

Well I can understand that but today I was in my house all day on WiFi and my WiFi speeds average is in the 40mbps and I was having this issue with YouTube all day. I just wish there where some kind of hacked YouTube apk like before when you was able to force 1080p to stick no matter what.
Yea it never does
Hey there. I have an issue with YouTube. When I select the video quality / resolution I no longer select 1440p. It doesn't show in the menu. I was previously on NOS 7.1.2 and updated two days ago to NOS 8.1.0 and the app behaviour didn't change.
I tried also with YouTube Vance magisk module and forced the resolution to 1440p but to no avail.
Has Google changed something ? Is anyone facing this issue or it is just me ?
Apparently the problem occurred after 1st of April. I mean if I go to see a YouTube clip uploaded before this moment I can select 1440p, but after this date it doesn't allow to go further than 1080p.
I guess Google did something. Maybe the option to select higher resolution above 1080p are restricted to YouTube Red only ?
If someone could check this and report back to me. I would really appreciate it. Thank you...and thanks to nittin for his amazing work with NitrogenOS.
from what I noticed it's something related to adblocking, at least in my case. Updating to latest yt apk often fixes this "auto downgrade" too for some time (I'm using AdAway and Youtube AdAway - the xposed module - without those, no quality downgrades, but bloated with ads: /). Not sure about 1440p, since I changed my screen res to 1080p
Edit: both 1440p and 4k showing up on my pc, even on latest videos, not sure how that compares to a phone tho.
Thanks for the reply but this doesn't apply in my situation. As I said, clips older than 01.04.2018 ate running at 1440p anything after this are capped to 1080p.
I believe there something broke by Google. I would like to know if someone else with a Nexus 6 is experiencing the same thing.

Same issue here. No option to play 1440p. I've read that it has to do with using an ad blocker ( adaway, etc). Sucks because I pay for YouTube Red through GPM.... Might have to figure out how to modify my host file to filter out Youtube now.
Ok. But I don't use adblocker. I have NOS 8.1.0 installed with gapps and magisk. I tried the youtube official version, i tried the youtube vanced (magisk module) whici by the way it allows youtube to play in the background even with your screen off (same as youtube red). You'd better check it out.
What I don't get it is why some clips are played in 1440p (the ones uploaded before 01.04.2018).
Maybe other Nexus 6 users will join us and will enlighten us.

Could you link to one of those videos? As far as I know, this is not possible. You have to either download videos first, and stretch it with a videoplayer, or you can parse the youtube link through one of those download services, then paste it in a player to stream it. Not a seamless experience exactly.
People say you can use certain web browsers (like uc browser, opera etc.) to open web videos in an external player, but I can't find the option in any of them. Maybe they have removed this option in later updates. I remember I could do it long ago. Doubt it will do youtube videos anyway. You get this sense that everyone wants to force you to use their own integrated player alone.
Anyone else who can point to a browser that can open videos externally? Just regular web videos?
Morning, about youtube, I like to ear movies as well but there is the touch issues... with SONY I have a smart app able to lock the screen from un-accidental touch, did we have app alike here?
Cheers,
Work with this modded APK:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-mix-2/themes/fullscreen-youtube-mi-mix-2-t3701979
You can do it without root on every video on Youtube !
Just activate the "Magnification gesture" setting and then triple tap whenever you want to "zoom in" a Youtube video,it will still crop a little part of the video to make it full screen if the ratio is not the same though.
Just install YouTube Vanced Rootless APK and the modded MicroG Google Service APK.
This gives you ad-free YouTube, background playback and full zoom to fit support.

You're welcome. This, retroarch with 2:1 ratio setting, moonlight with screen stretch setting and Netflix make for a brilliant multi purpose gaming and movie consumption device, as all of them will display content full screen.
