Display backlight LEDs clearly visible at the bottom! - Mi 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got the Mi3 a few days ago and the first thing I noticed was a very minor defect- a pattern at the bottom of the display which was only visible on white screens.
Here is a picture of it (move your head a bit away from the monitor and look hard at the very bottom edge of the display to see it):

I guess this is where the backlight LEDs are placed and the pattern is formed due to it. This pattern is less visible when looking directly but it can be seen well enough while tilting the screen a bit.
It is a very minor issue to me as it is visible only on white screens/screens with bright colours but it is still a bit annoying while browsing, reading an ebook, etc.
So, it this present on all Mi3s due to the way the phone is manufactured or is my Mi3's LCD defective?

Bump

Now I guess this isn't an isolated issue and is present in most Mi3s. But I don't know why they designed the display this way.

Thanks for the confirmation. I'm not that bothered about this problem now and I won't try for a replacement.

Has anyone got a Mi3 which doesn't have this problem?
Also, is there any method to find out whether my display is made by Sharp or LG?

i really don't have that problem. I tried to look in ever angle. It is clean white down there. Can't see led.

Snapdragon. it is not bright like on top or sides but also not dark in "waves" like on picture

So, this defect had started to annoy me a bit and I took my phone to the Mi service center(Egmore, Chennai). I showed this problem to them and right away they recognised it and told me that this was present on all Mi3s and it wasn't a defect. They handed me over another Mi3 which they had and, sure enough, it also had the same "problem".
I wonder why no reviewer has mentioned this defect though and why there isn't a lot of talk about this. There has been a little talk about the gradual darkening of the screen from top to bottom(which I have recently noticed in mine too). I guess people aren't that bothered about it. :silly:

My mi3 also has this thing. Its not a defect. Try seeing a teardown of the device and u will see that the display leds are located at the bottom in the same pattern as you see those black shadows. This is completely normal.

Try a screen trainer (or whatever they're called) to see if it's stuck pixels before you return it. But yeah, I totally understand. I can't stand them once I've spotted them; it looks like you got a few of them too.

Yikes. That sucks man. No problems here, on two N7's (I scrutinized both at max brightness as I'm a paranoid type). Take it back, get another!

This isn't going in a dark room and turning up the brightness to look for light bleed; dead pixels really are an annoyance, especially when you've got four or five.
Dead pixels drive me crazy... I've always been anal about my screens. I would still try a screen fix app though before I would exchange.

I've counted five problem pixels on mine. You can only notice it on a black screen. They have a very tiny whiteness to them. I think I can live with it though.
I too have a few bright pixels. I also of a dark spot under the glass between the screen... guess I will be exchanging mine as well

Did you get it from the playstore? If not, Google will tell you to take it back to where you bought it from and get it exchanged there.
What can be seen cannot be unseen
I had mine delivered about 2 hours ago and right up until now I haven't noticed anything.
After seeing this thread I thought I'd check and whilst I only have one stuck pixel (white colour) and it's not in a particularly noticeable location, it's all I can see!
I guess I'll RMA it and I'm glad I can wait until the new one gets to me before sending this one away. Especially after the 3 week wait for it.
I was nervous this would happen with mine but my screen is pretty much fine. Had a little bit of the screen lift but I loosened all the screws and then tightened them and now it seems fine.

Awful Screen Colors

Have any of you gone to a different model of phone then come back to the D3 and realized the screen colors on this Pentile display just suck? It really jumped out to me when using the Handcent Emoji Plugin and when viewing from an angle. Here's a side-by-side comparison with my DX. Both photos were taken with the phones at max brightness with no screen protector on either. D3 has consistent color when viewing from an angle whereas the DX doesn't, but the DX's LCD does have a hairline crack underneath and used to have a flickering dot whenever touched. It's since gone away, but the screen has been damaged from pressure.
DX on left and D3 on right.

In the second picture, the one on the left seems to have weird wavy lines in the white section, and honestly, neither one of their colors look too hot at that angle anyway. Yes, the Pentile is somewhat less vibrant than a Super AMOLED screen, but it's not that big a deal to me; I'm not color-sensitive designing digital art or using Photoshop on the thing, just surfing and texting, with a little gaming. The biggest factor for me is that the Droid X doesn't have a keyboard, which means it's not even in the cards for me. A close second is that, since I live in Hawaii, good visibility in bright sunlight (all year around lol) is fairly inportant.

Nexus 7 Line Screen Bug is Software

Hi,
Many of us said the screen was somehow defect because of the while line bug on white pages/images. Well I succeed to take a picture while it appeared and it is software because as you can see, we can still see it in the red rectangle. It happened while I was checking my delevery status so yeah I have censured few things just in case.

I get one but it is horizontal and looks kind of jagged. It looks like what you get when a CRT television powers off. It used to be extremely frequent in the realm of multiple times a minute but a kernel change fixed it. I stopped following the forums for a while so I don't know if it has been fully addressed yet. Regardless, it would be nice to know if someone has fixed it completely. It happens throughout the system, no rhyme or reason, it has occurred on the home screen, in settings, app drawer or browser.

I have flashed the custom kernel for almost 1 month and never find the line again.

I just realized that I haven't seen the line in a while. Using PA and Faux.
Thanks then it means it is a bug related to the kernel 0o ?

Screen Discoloring?

Aiming for that 3500mAh, thinking that I could get a monster battery life out of it, and.... I am being stupid by getting the phone on eBay.
Well, let's say that the screen is fine when the brightness is above 80%. However as soon as the brightness is lower than that, the upper right hand corner of the screen with a radius of 3cm, and partially the whole right side of the screen appears to be blueish. Closer look reveals that the blue pixels are brighter than the rest.
Questions: any solution to that? I found the app "Filter Your Screen" may be helpful, but I only want that part of the screen to be filtered.
I recognize the noisy "filter" of the OLED display, so don't start that on me, I am only looking for a solution or "fix" for that blueish color.
Keep the brightness at 80%?

At the expense of the battery life? It's like taking the material from the east side of your house then fix the west side of the house.

I keep my brightness maxed 90% of the time and I would consider myself a power user. Flex battery life is phenomenal. One of the reasons is because of the screen.

It's long lasting, but I reckon if the brightness can be lower without compromising the battery life AND without the discoloring, that would be better.
I have a Droid Maxx on my way, should be here tomorrow. I shall donate the device to a dev or sell it at a super low price to help the G Flex community.
That's way cool. You could try one if the dead pixel repairs apps though. Maybe they'll shock it into working right

I am trying that software right now. Wow that is making me trippin'
Due to the nature of the new flexible screen tech used in the G Flex, there is always going to be some discoloration, graininess, and image persistence. Think back to the first AMOLED screens in the original Galaxy S. Its the price we pay for walking around with a mass produced engineering concept.

Dark mark beside nfc logo

Hi all,
I just noticed a dark mark behind the phone right beside the NFC logo and it's quite obvious from certain angles.
I don't use the phone extensively - messaging, twitter, instagram, non graphic intensive games.
Anyone know what caused the mark? I suspect its the processor or graphic chip.
Do you think it's a valid reason to head down to the repair centre and is it covered under warranty?
Thanks.

I have a white one also and I can see a sort of "halo" around the NFC from certain angles with certain lights, but nothing worth saying!
EDIT: Now I see, looks like it's about 1"x1" darker spot on the left? Seems rather weird indeed, do you have a protector on this side? You can look at a disassembly video to see if it's close to a processor... Surely is weird!
I can see the square from your pictures and I can say this, back cover is in glass and there is not way that any chip or whatever can do such a thing. Only 2 things can be, 1- the paint of the back cover (which I suppose is not on the glass but is under), 2-Back Plastic protector. I will suggest to take off first the plastic back protector and check if the square still there.
Hi all,
Thanks for your help.
I removed the protector but the mark is still there, so it's on the phone itself.
I'm thinking if the mark got to do with the chip heating up the paint or back panel thus causing the dark mark?

This protector behind is in case you break the glass to not hurt you...and i think it's impossible to heat sufficiently to make a dark mark like that.

The glass has a sticker protector, all Z1 have it in both side.
If you watch this YouTube clip. There is actually a square heatshield for a chip in that region behind the back cover. Maybe that would cause it. I don't know if my eyes tricked me but it looked like his back cover also had that square.
