FoxFi (paid version) is working fine on my N4. So is the proxy add-on.
My only question is How do I hide the hot spot activity from TMo? I have the top plan which includes 5gb of tethering data.
How do I test this and fix if necessary?

Foxfi doesn't work for me. Its still using my tethered (Hot Spot) plan and not my data plan. Even after creating an alternative APN setting. You sure yours is working?

When I said "working" I meant it's producing a wifi signal. I have no idea which part of the plan it's pulling data through.
That's why I asked how I test (hotspot or data plan) and fix it.

correction:
FoxFi is NOT working to divert data from hotspot to data plan.
Even using the proxy feature, it still shows up as tethering in the My Account app.
It seems all FoxFi does is turn on the Tmo hotspot app.

Updated thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2914057
So wifi won't work, but could anyone please verify that the Note 4 can at least be USB tethered to a PC with FoxFi and use T-Mobile mobile data, instead of tether data? I've searched all over and saw no one specifically verifying this with TMO, even though FoxFi generally says it's possible. I don't have a Note 4 or TMO yet to test myself, and prefer to stay unrooted so all the other options I've seen wouldn't fly. I'd probably barely go over 20GB in a month.
If USB tethering does properly hide it as mobile data, I wonder if it'd be possible to USB into a wifi router. I saw someone on Reddit doing that, but it wasn't a Note 4 and there was no specific hiding of tethering as it just used android's baked in tethering.
I've never used FoxFi before so if anyone could help with the following questions I'd appreciate it too:
1. If I have to use USB to PC, could I still use my phone for calls/texting/etc at the same time? Same question if FoxFi WiFi was eventually supported for N4?
2. While USB tethered to PC would my phone also be charging?
3. If I can USB into my PC, could I create WiFi from there in some way?
Thank you for any help!
Just coming back to update that yes you can use FoxFi to USB tether to your PC and have the internet useage be recognized as mobile data. Just need to put PDAnet on your PC. It does charge the phone at the same time, though extremely slow compared to fast charging. I've texted at the same time and used my phone in other ways as well.

Hey Other Glass Explorers,
Just wanted to check and see if anyone has found a way around verizon blocking bluetooth data sharing unless you have a tethering plan. Out of the research I've done so far supposedly google built a work around into the MyGlass app (the icon shows up and down arrows) but I still get not data connection when only connected to bluetooth. I thinking my option at this point is to root and say "Forget you Verizon, I'll do what I want with my data". Has anyone else noticed this?

I can confirm that Verizon was blocking my bluetooth tether. I'm on a grandfathered unlimited data plan. Once I rooted, and went to a custom ROM, I'm happy to report that bluetooth data tethering is fully operational.

Ok so I'm running a Rom that has the native Wi-Fi tether enabled but as soon as a device connects the signal drops (meaning I loose data on the phone)
I've noticed many many people after updating to kitkat having the same problem but no one has a solution.
Has anyone found a workaround to get Wi-Fi tether working again?
I'm using a sense based rom. Not sure if aosp rom would fix this issue.

+1. I have been searching for a fix myself. The 4g and native tether do not work well together, at least with me. I've tried the patch on stock roms as well with the same results. I connect just fine, but then seconds later the data will drop. I have good 4g coverage and without the hotspot active, the connection will never drop. If I switch to cdma only there are no drops while tethering. I have been testing different scenarios to find a solution, but no success yet. I also have not found any mention of the problem on the cm threads, but I prefer sense and have not tested. It makes me wonder if the sprint proxies are causing this. I am tethering a window device.

Just curious...do you have a hotspot plan with Sprint?
I am having the same problem with the stock OTA and and using the hotspot hacks since I don't have a hotspot plan. It would be interesting to know if those with a hotspot plan (for which the native app should work unhacked) have the 4G problem too...

Good question. No I do not have the hotspot plan. Never have needed it with the fix prior to kk. I'm not abusive of it, but I simply hate the fact that 4g now doesn't work very well with tethering. Seems to be a hit or miss with everyone. Mine will connect, load a few pages then out of nowhere the connection drops. Go cdma only and it works as should. I'm hoping a few of these threads will gather some attention and help us find a solution for everyone.

Been testing some CM builds of Kit Kat. I have been running CM11 build modded by IrocEvo the last few days. I have had zero issues with any type of tethering. 4G tethering works as should with no disconnects. I'm not sure what the difference is in the scripts for the mods, but possibly someone could assist here. For now, ill be keeping a backup of this build specifically for tethering purposes.
I don't have hot spot on my plan, but I'm trying the new ecliptic rom with sense six, just haven't been able to try4g tether today...been to busy building an engine :/ hopefully try tomorrow
After some further testing on the CDMA+LTE mode, I was able to determine that I could successfully tether my android tablet and samsung smart TV with no interruptions. The problems begin while using this mode (rather than CDMA only) and tethering my laptop. It appears while using this radio mode sprint sniffs the packets for user agent data and once determined its a windows device the connection is interrupted. My question is, why would this happen on this radio mode only? Are the APN settings different for this mode and can those be changed. Sorry to keep beating the horse, but I would like to find a solution rather than running a VPN to tether my windows 8.1 laptop. Any ideas? Thanks everyone.

I've looked into this before and the common response I would find is that it has to do with the Hotspot apk in Sense. There was some sort of change when moving from JB 4.2 to 4.3.

So I've been a longtime foxfi -> PDANet user and ever since 4.3 dropped I've lived without tether. It wasn't THAT big a deal for me since I tether in emergency situations only and they don't come up often but now that I'm on the S5 and root has dropped I realized it's time to get tethering as a backup working.
So my question is what's the current best wifi tether option for the S5 if you've rooted it? I don't mind paying for an app if there's no free version that does the same thing or just to support a good developer. I've found things like wifi tether:
https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
but every one I've found seems old and hasn't been updated in quite a long time.
Any feedback much appreciated.

Grandfathered unlimited with no option to use the built-in Mobile Hotspot without giving up the unlimited. I use MAYBE 500MB-1GB tethering a month and I'm not willing to give up unlimited for the ability to tether those rares times especially since pulling into the parking lot of a starbucks has worked for those emergencies in the last few months.

That WiFi tether is OK to use. The core system has not been updated in a while, but if you look into the project a little deeper, you will find that the S4 just received it's own configuration into the tether.
With the S5 recently obtaining root, I'm sure the configuration will be patched in soon.
I am using 3.4pre1 (experimental). There are only two issues I came across.
1) The Logging portion fails.
2) If you are connected to a wifi hotspot, then start wifi tether, you will loose the configuration for that specific SSID. Don't worry, though, as a reboot will fix this.
Also, I use the S4 device profile. It seems there is somewhat smoother operations with this.

I just tried that and it didn't seem to work for me. I got impatient and just bought Wifi Tether Router 6 (that $25 google play credit makes it hard to be patient). It seems to work but I had some issues when I was connected to Wifi when I started to initiate the tether and actually if I was even in a place where I had a signal for a saved wifi. Forgetting the wifi networks in my house and it worked which I guess is ok since I wouldn't ever be using it someplace where I had another Wifi to connect to.
But I wouldn't mind figuring out how to use wanam xposed to do it, if there's a way to.

Yes it does seem to. Allows me to use native app, doesn't mess up wifi if connected already. I think I'll use this method. I'll just eat the $2.50 for wifi tether router I guess.

DISCLAIMER: This is my first thread on XDA, so hopefully I'm not posting in the wrong place/format/context/whatever. If I am, sorry.
For those of you with AT&T plans that don't include Tethering, I came across a simple way to bypass this with root and allow you to run the built in tethering instead of having to use FoxFi.
What you'll need:
Xposed Framework
X Tether Module (Xposed Module)
Root (towelroot method)
Titanium Backup
Root Explorer/ES File Explorer
Step 1:
Install Xposed Framework.
Once installed, launch Xposed Installer, go to Downloads and search for X Tether
Install X Tether, Activate the Module, and reboot.
Step 2:
Open Titanium Backup and find TetheringProvision 4.06.72
Press the App and select 'Freeze !'
Step 3:
Open Root Explorer and navigate to:
/system/app/
Now rename TetheringProvision.apk and TetheringProvision.odex
to TetheringProvision.apk.bak and TetheringProvision.odex.bak
Step 4:
Reboot, Set up Hotspot and Enjoy!

Yea, that looked too easy. Usually you would swap the tethering provision files with hacked ones.

I see you changed the instructions in the thread. That just renaming the file like you suggested earlier, well AT&T caught on to that, and now that doesn't work anymore.

Hi shortydoggg,
You're right, I left out the most important part, the Xposed Module.
X Tether (or Moto Tether) is what actually clears out the array that stores the provision varification data (config_mobile_hotspot_provision_app)
Just running this module didn't work for me at first but after renaming the Tether Provisioning files it worked fine.
I also had trouble renaming the files until I froze the Tether Provisioning apk file.
I just ran another test and the built in wifi hotspot is still working great with my 3GB monthly plan.
Works awesome!!!!
BTW, I have the Grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan.
Thanks!
Did this yesterday, worked fine. THANKS!
Also another grandfathered unlimited plan here; they provisioned the plan on my new GS5 but couldn't enable tethering. This solves that!! Awesome!!

Open the Xposed network on your phone and check that the tethering module is activated, and that the xposed network actually installed. You may need to do another step (hint)
Wifi tether speed
I was able to allow mobile hot spot on my Att S5 using the S4 method of replacing the tetherprovision.apk, problem is the speed of the devices connected is terrible. Fine for checking email on one device but not for streaming netflix on multiple like I need. Anyone know of a way to change this? Is it some config file that is set purposely to limit tethered devices?

Note 3 AT&T on T-Mobile, never used hotspot before
A few questions -
1. Phone gets hot when hotspot is on. Is that normal?
2. Connection drops from time to time. IPv6 connectivity shows "no internet access", but then works without me doing anything. Is that T-Mobile's fault?
3. When I received a call the icon changed from LTE to 4g, but while hotspot is on and pc connected, the signal never changed back to LTE. Is that how it supposed to be? I have to turn hotspot off and on after every phone call to get LTE back? Or is that T-Mobile not being happy (I have not used the 3gb hotspot limit on my unlimited data plan)
Thanks
Hi, first off a major thanks to OP for posting an excellent tutorial on how to do this. I was really hoping to get tethering enabled on my grandfather unlimited data plan before vacation and am so excited to not have to pay $15 a day for WiFi.
I've been having a lot of lag with the phone lately. Its very slow to respond to typing, switching apps, and even waking and putting to sleep takes 5-10 seconds longer than normal. Any suggestions? I followed all of the directions to the letter and aside from this massive amount of lag, everything is perfect.

Hey Nikon,
Hopefully someone with a little more knowledge on the subject can help out but here are my thoughts.
1. My s2 always got hot while tethering for long periods of time and my s5 seems to do the same as well.
This is normal and caused by the 4G antenna and WiFi antenna running simultaneously.
2. Perhaps IPv6 is not working but IPv4 is? I'm seeing the same thing on my AT&T connection.
3. I never had this issue. You might want to double check your APN settings, it could be a t-mobile thing but I really don't think they're targeting people who tether, it sounds more like the connection can't re-establish after connecting to a phone call.

I followed all of the directions to the letter and aside from this massive amount of lag, everything is perfect.

Hey RSCTurner20,
I haven't notice any lag since doing this, does the lag go away if you turn off the X Tether Module and reboot?
edit: most likely cause and a quick fix: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784945
that's right - if you get a call or access phone settings while client is connected phone cannot re-establish lte connection.
I know when you get a call (hotspot off) on Nexus 5 it takes anywhere from 15 seconds to up to 5 minutes to get lte back
Is there a way to force phone to refresh frequencies?
I was wondering if there's a workaround to the T-Mobile tether throttle on the One plan. I'm currently waiting on my replacement but was hoping to be able to get the workaround running asap. Thanks in advanced!
i am wondering the same thing about this and if there is a way to bypass the 480p cap on it ..
You can just turn binge on, off. No more 480p cap.

Not under the new plan. You have to pay to turn off Binge On.

That should totally be against the law. If i want to use up all my data watching netflix at full video quality it is my prerogative I say.

Well, that is just the beginning of not so nice things within the new plan. The new plan is really about throttling users after a small amount of data. Unlimited, just not unlimited high speed. Which is the reason I stayed with my old plan.

So true.
Forgot to mention about T-Mobile making Tethering users to be as monsters in their campaigns.

T-Mobile One is unlimited data, no buckets, so you're gonna use up infinity data at full quality with your proposal
My guess is you could root and probably use a 3rd party app to tether at LTE speeds. I've been wondering the same thing myself so I'm following to see what everybody else says lol
I have tried WiFi Tether Router by Fabio Grasso, but it doesn't help. Tried all different settings/methods combinations. Still tethers at the same speeds as Android native tethering.
I also tried changing User Agent string on my tablet and laptop to clone my Nexus 6's string but still not helping.
I did use to tether heavily, many months of around 300 GBs of data with this app "Wifi Tether Router". It's perfect for bypassing quotas, but so far not working for throttling.
Interesting fact: T-Mobile is letting speedtest.net traffic through without throttling, so if you run it, you'll notice it shows LTE speeds. However, if you run any other test like speedof.me (which is my favorite!) you'll be throttled.
I'll keep you guys posted when I figure it our. Shouldn't take long.

Have you tried a VPN?
You can download "WiFi Tether Router" in the Playstore, if you're rooted, it gives you unlimited tethering.

You have to edit build.prop file. You can do that easily by downloading the app called "BuildProp Editor" in the Playstore. Then look for the string called "net.tethering.noprovisioning" and set it to true. then it should be working no problem.
Any solution yet to this???
Found a kinda solution. I downloaded foxfi and the key (if you need the key I can send you the link) and turned it on and chose "run proxy" then connect your laptop, PlayStation, Xbox etc to the proxy and it will tether more than 500kbps I'm using my hotspot to watch Netflix on my PlayStation right now and there's hardly any buffer time so it's working for me.
Ugh wish I would've found this thread before the I upgraded to xfinity wifi...just got a $177 bill the other day so pissed

Method 1 – Dun = 0 [Android Only]
Requirements: Windows PC, USB cable
Download the ADB and Fastboot installer from XDA-developers. Select Yes when prompted by installation options (install ADB and fastboot, install system-wide, and install drivers).
Enable USB Debugging on your phone/tablet.
Connect your phone to your computer via USB cable.
Open up the command prompt.
Click Start, in the search Type in cmd. Next, Click on the program cmd (or Command Prompt).
Type “adb shell” and press enter.
Don’t type the quotation marks “”, just the text inside them!
Type “settings put global tether_dun_required 0” and press enter.
Note: If you see “error: device not found” it is usually because A) you need to update your phone USB drivers on your PC or B) your USB cable isn’t capable of transmitting data because it is only designed to charge the phone or C) USB Debugging isn’t enabled.

- Got this from Groovypost.com ... It also says you can change your TTL setting in the registry to 65 and that also works...
Here's the link for more info: https://www.groovypost.com/howto/hide-data-usage-get-truly-unlimited-tethering-tmobile-one/

Do you still get throttled to 128kbs or whatever?
