(Rant) Laggy - Galaxy Note 4 General

Okay so I'm not one to complain but I just got the note 4 about 5 hours ago and damn does this thing stutter, Like opening apps scrolling through the home screens and stuff is fine but no apps and I mean none run smooth, they all have the micro scrolling stutter and even after switching to art they still do it. And I'm coming from a nexus 4 so this phone shouldn't feel like a high end phone yet perform like a a low end phone I have not rooted but I am deciding to just Duke it out and wait for roms I already received the update that's supposed to help the lag and no difference I mean I kind of new what I was getting my self into when I got it considering it is a Samsung phone but still. Hoping for hyper drive or at least a debloated stock rom soon

I have no lag at all. Have you tried rebooting it and maybe a factory reset?

Even in power saving its pretty smooth i m an old nexus 4-5 user too i wouldnt expect this smoothness from a touchwiz phone

Yes the first thing I did was factory reset then I disabled a bunch of Samsung and Google Apps I didn't use and yea I'm giving it a week if nothing improves I'm swapping it out for another one

Is this snapdragon or exynos ? No lag here aswell (910c)

If you're planning to root, don't just yet. It could be a hardware fault somewhere, because as you said, it still stutters after a factory reset. Once you root, you lose all warranty, even if it turns out to be harware fault.
If you can try visit a store with Note 4 demo units, compare them to yours.

I already tried some days a couple of Note 4. 1 abit lag, stutter lag, but another much smoother. Pls return it and get another one

Run some benchmarks before you return it - if it's hardware reason it should result in lower benchamrk results.

I was messing around with my brother's Note 4 (Snapdragon) and noticed lag as well. Which is funny because I was exploring my friend's S5 and there was absolutely 100% no lag. My brother had a live wallpaper and a bunch of apps running in the background, so I assume that could be the reason. However, there shouldn't be any lag what-so-ever at this point. WTF is going on?
Maybe I'll wait for the Note 5. Lol.

I use exynos version and get no lag at all
My ram free never over 400mb but it still very smooth
Maybe you should try factory reset and make sure dont change your device to art

ok! thanks!

I have the t mobile snapdragon version and yea i will be testing it extensively for a week before I do anything because I mean even some of the display models at best buy were being smoother than mine haha but don't get me wrong guys I love this phone it is amazing I just can't take the stuttering and about the s5 yes that's weird my dad has the s5 and I was comparing it to my note and noticed no lag at all compared to my note :/

Or could it just be that the display is so clear that even the littlest things are noticeable? Lol

Mine is really laggy (snapdragon UK version) it takes 2-3 seconds to load up the open apps menu, 2-3 seconds to then open an app such as facebook, google, menu, gallery etc, I don't play many games but one I use quite often which the phone should smash through is Words with friends, it takes awhile to load and you can literally see it lagging as you move the tiles from one section to another.
You can see it lagging as you scroll through facebook and twitter also.

Got a SA Vodacom Snapdragon one and no lag.

Not really lag, but more like device throttling. Check out this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-sprint/help/camera-video-lagging-t2913392

Mine is N910C (Exynos Edition).
No lag as you mention.
I even test with my friend iPhone 6 Plus, 99% apps opening in Note 4 is ahead faster than iPhone 6 Plus.
The only slight delay is Recent Apps and also sometimes they is a little slight jittering animation.
Overall this Note 4 is pretty smooth. I rate it second smoother animation android after HTC One M8 but for speed, it is the most speedy android phone ever for the moment.

[Q] AT&T Note 3 Iffy Framerates/Benchmarks?

Hi all so let me start by saying ive always enjoyed this site and its users and help. unfortunately what brings me here is that Im having issues with some fluidity of this device based on what ive seen from other videos regarding games and their benchmarks. Ok so heres a few examples of titles im speaking of. Dead Trigger 1&2, Modern Combat 4, all of the Grand Theft Auto games. Even DraStic DS Emulator which ive seen running perfectly on a user posted Note 3. My wifes iPhone 5c runs these games literally perfect, my Note 3 struggles here and there. So that led me to running almost every benchmark i could think of and to my concern again all of my scores are coming up a hair shorter than other users. And gameplay isnt just quite as smooth as other user videos. I almost have no other issues with the device and im constantly taking care of its memory and cache. Even factory rest a few times. Its nothing more than normal Android hiccup that ive been used to. But with Project Butter and these other videos I just need to know if theres an issue with my device or did I get screwed buying the Note 3. Has anyone else noticed this? Either via gaming or web scrolling or the notorious Youtube Streaming smoothness issue. Please any help is greatly appreciated. Ive even taken the liberty of posting every screen cap of benchmarks that i took. You dont have to look at all the photos but im thorough so i gave you all of them.
I don't know what is wrong with your device but something doesn't seem right. You Antutu seems way low compared to mine and even the stock phone. Do you have any power saving apps running or something?

See thats what I dont understand its a factory reset. Heres my other concern with your screenie, yours is even higher than alot of scores Ive seen. So I cant quite get a figure on what the norm is for this device. Especially since there are so many versions with two different chipsets too boot. What I dont get is if these scores are the norm then why. Since as much as I hate iOS i have to give it credit where its due: ITS ABSOLUTELY SMOOTHER THAN A DEVICE WITH MORE PHYSICAL RAW POWER? My gripes arent even major the hiccups are only every now and then but for the most part I have a hard time seeing any other YouTube Note 3's that display the behavior. And its not even that its bad or doesnt work, i just got concerned with the hiccups.
I'm running a custom ROM. But yours is even lower than the stock mark?? Weird

Should really try and root and install safe strap and run a custom rom see if it help. Power saving mode on maybe?

I thought about trying the same idea of flashing it and Ive done many other devices. Buts thats not why I bought the device, I dont wanna brick it or just flat out tamper with it, and it seems hit or miss from person to person or at least what Ive seen. Reviews say it hiccups but videos Ive watched on youtube dont really do it or i cant quite notice it over the occasoinal stutter that youtube itself presents lol. Any ideas? Even the Exynos Bench's are alost identical to our SnapDragons save for one or two tests. i dont get it im confused lol.

No power save. And theres no AT&T Stock Binary yet. Im not messing with that OneClick lol. Any other ideas?
Id be just as satisfied if everyone can say their device runs all these games with out one single hiccup. Ever. Lol. I know Android games arent as optimized as ios but Im just trying to understand why or how to fix it or if some poeple have also experinced it. And like i said youtube stutters on its own on my laptop and Note 3 so its been hard to use that as a reference.Ive been able to use it to compare my ps3 games framerates but the quality of vidoes out there are crap since most are being recorded unprofeesionally. The other half is just as a i said hard to tell from youtube.
*bump*
*bump* I hate doing it, just looking for more input. Thanks.
I know you said you dont have "power save" on...but this sounds stuiped but I had this problem before...Even though your button says power save is off Have you clicked to the left of the button and bring this menu up and make sure its not on Auto on is enabled?
yeh auto save was enabled on mine.cool I took it off.Didn't even know that menu existed.lol
Ok so this was after turning every option I could think of. My question still remains that I don't understand why others are still getting higher results. Also these numbers have had no effect on gaming it still hiccups in most hardware intensive applications just slightly more than an iPhone 5c I just don't get it.

Well I've been keeping it eye on it more and i've gotten as high as 33,000 or whatever it was in that screenie but it's not consistent it'll drop back down in the 27'000 area. Plus like I said my main concern is I can't get this phone to play games as well as my wife's iPhone does. I mean this is a quad core right. Last I checked no iPhone should beat this on pen and paper right? And it's not unplayable and most wouldn't care but I just wanted to know if this hiccup here and there is acceptable as normal?

I contacted AT&T and they're sending me a replacement. Well see what happens then. But you guys never see a hiccup in your gaming. Never the slightest framerate dip? And i should clarify that when im comparing it to the iPhone the framerates there stay consistent. My device plays great but here and there it hiccups. That's actually what I'm really referring to. And if so how is that possible comparing it to s device of lesser power? I mean I don't make this stuff up I keep noticing that almost every game I play runs just that much better on my wife's iPhone 5c than a Note 3...

[Q] Performance Issues

I purchased a new prepaid T-Mobile Note 4 from BestBuy few days ago. Today I have noticed that when I run benchmarks, I am getting very low scores. On Antutu, I am only getting around 26000, but sometimes I am getting the normal scores i.e, 46k. Even when running other benchmark applications, I noticed that I was getting only around half scores but sometimes I am getting normal scores.
I don't understand this strange behaviour. Is my phone defective ? Should I return it ?
P.S: I have not rooted this phone. I tried a factory reset, and there is no power saving mode turned on.
Does the phone feel slow? Is it heating up under normal use?
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Premium HD app
The phone is OK and gets heated up at times. Yesterday I played MC5 for about 15mins it was okay, but sometimes while running benchmarks it gets heated up
Can someone help me my phone feels absolutely normal but my benchmark scores are not that good.... Really?
Stop benchmarking phones I keep telling people that.. Not everyone phone will perform the same as long as it feels nice and snappy you should be all set
Some people have loaded hundreds of apps on to their phones, which can affect performance.
Do you have a lot of apps? How's your free space?
I wouldn't really rely on benchmarks as the sole indicator of performance. That being said, is the phone laggy? You said it performs "OK" but one person's idea of OK can be quite different than the next persons idea of it.
Also, where did you purchase the phone from? There's quite a few fake Note 4's floating around. If you purchased it through your carrier, go ahead and request a swap.
Do you have on power saver mode?
Best buy sells note4 for TMOBILE? Hmmmm by me they don't support any TMOBILE.

I know benchmarks are not an indication of performance, but atleast there should be some consistency, right ? Sometimes, I get normal scores similar to other Note 4 devices as expected. But sometime I get HALF the scores or much less than older devices, something which is not expected out of this device. So I doubt is there anything wrong my particular unit ?

Yes they are selling a prepaid No contract Note 4 locked to T-Mobile network. I got it for 699. Now it is out of stock though ! And yeah, it is indeed a bad ass PHONE !!
Majority of benchmarks put so much load on processor that after few minutes it heats up, overheat protection kicks in and slows down cpu. If you run few benchmarks one after each other then phone has no time to cool off. There is some roms available on xda which modifies how long you can run on full speed and higher temperature until cpu slows down.
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app
A modified kernel is the only thing that will allow you to adjust thermal throttling. Hoever i do not recomend adjusting theses settings, this will damage your cpu. Thats what the thermal governor is for.
Oh, yeah. When I got my N4, the benchmarks sucked! Slower than my S3! Rooted, put on a custom ROM and it's all good. No heating, nothing. Even went back to Stock when the update came...and it was still good. Not sure, what was wrong...or what happened from Stock to Custom to Stock...

Haha yes. It's very strange though. So, I have finally decided to root and install a custom ROM. I only hope there is no heating.
And do I lose the possibility of updating to official Lollipop through Odin (not OTA's) when the offical 5.0.2 comes out ?
Thanks

Overheating should be reduced. Lollipop you will have to odin stock firmware or if you made a back up of stock rom with a stock kernel.

Multitasking rant

I love my Note 4, and I spend a lot of time on it because of work, personal and to run/manage a blog. I'm definitely a heavy-user, which makes what I'm about to say even more upsetting : Multitasking on a stock Note 4 (and apparently the Note 5) sucks.
I know that it has everything to do with software, and it's so frustrating to see that it's not being addressed by Sammy.
Last night, after reading many complaints about the ultra-agressive memory management on the Note 5,I decided to do a little, unscientific test with my Note 4 and Note 2 running CM 12.1.
I set up a page on Nova launcher with some apps I use often, including twitter, Facebook pages manager, instagram, the calendar app, chrome and so on.
I cleared all running processes and ran System panel to keep an eye on free RAM. Right away I noticed that both devices start at pretty much the same free RAM, despite the note 4 having an extra GB. No biggie.
Then I run each app in a cycle, checking back with each one in the series to see when they start to reload/refresh.
On the Note 4, I was able to open around 5 apps before it needed to reload the app - disappointing.
But on the Note 2, I got to a staggering 15 apps running before I noticed it reloading. WHAT??
I've seen tests on the LG g4 and Zenfone 2 handling multitasking like a boss, but what the hell is going on with Samsung flagship phones?
No matter what I do, and I've tried a lot of tweaks and adjustments to improve memory management, it still sucks big time on my Note 4.
Will this ever get fixed? [emoji21]
i dont know how bad note 5 multitasking is. but note 4 multitasking is way better than s6 edge. not even comparable.and cm multitasking will always be better than samsung. since i wont ever need more than 5 apps at a time note 4 multitasking is ok for me but s6 is just bull**** sometimes it cant even open 2 tabs in browser and 2 app at a time generally not possible unless they are very tiny apps,
and note5 is going from same way i guess. most of the apps can continue from last phase too so i can understand it abit but it also gets very annoying sometimes bank or payments in browser gets killed and you cant do anything. but like i said havent had any problems on note 4 but s6 edge is very very bad.
I noticed that if u open the app from the launcher is different than with te recent button. If u try with the recent button I can reach 7/8 apps running no refresh

Unfortunately it's TW. Using AOSP ROMs shows that multitasking is lightning fast and can actually multitask quite a few apps (I think like 10 at a time) however using TW shows us a very long delay before you can even open multitasking and you do notice it's "fake" multitasking because the apps have to reload everytime you open them if you use more then a few apps and switch back.
I don't think it will ever get fixed on our devices or even soon for that matter. It's been a known problem back since 4.4.4 and still hasn't been properly fixed in 5.1.1 (I don't expect to actually see official Android M on the Note 4, regardless of the rumors)

Note 5 horrible lag

Just picked up the Note 5. I came from the iphone6. Needless to say its pretty bad. Many of the games I have tried to play on it have horrible lag. Couple examples would be Big Fish Casino, Clicker Heroes, Order and Chaos, and Hearthstone. I did some testing with my GF's phone, which is the S6 Edge+, her phone does the same thing with clicker heroes. Didn't go much further than that. I still have a few days left to return the phone but I am having trouble believing that both my phone and hers could be defective. My iphone6 didn't stumble a bit on any of these games.
Anyone know if the above games should cause FPS lag? Facebook does a number to it also, but only when trying to make me sync new photos. I may just end up going with the iphone6s because I had zero problems with it the last 2 years.
Thanks

Update the software if there is any updates. Then factory wipe(make sure to backup any data to your computer). Fixes most if not all problems with lag.

Not sure if this is the right approach to this forum. When you say "needless to say" does it mean you were expecting it to be laggy ? Becasue I don't see this to be a common problem. Not even sure why you moved away from your iphone if you were so happy about it.
It would be useful , for anyone to chip in , to know what model and firmware you have.
As for the lag my simple answer is : I have a 920G , rooted with dr Ketan Fware and SkyHigh Kernel, and my N5 is screaming fast with no lag.

I apologize for the bad approach. Spoke out of frustration. The model is SM-920T and the build number is LMY47X.N920TUVS2COKC.
I also factory reset the phone and when I tested clicker heroes again its pretty much locks the phone up if there are too many coins flying along side clicking.

I have already talked to the service rep that sold me the phone. Of course hes like "Eh must be the sim card." He denied that the phone was locking up. I will probably go and get a new one tomorrow before my 14 days are up and they try to stick me with a refurb. I haven't had a rooted android device since the Droid X first came out. Is it a lot safer now days? Just don't wanna try to root a device that is having so many hicupps out of the box.
You don't need to root for great performance. I've been running stock for months and all is very smooth with great battery life.

So do you think I have a dud phone then? I think I will go get a new one anyways. It is probably the best thing to do if I am not happy with the current performance of my phone.
It's not a dud. Also, it's not lag, more like dropping frame rate or an inconsistent frame rate. The note 5 doesn't lag, it just can't produce a consistent frame rate in games I play. That's how android is.
I just got a note 5 as a business phone and I use a 6s plus as a main phone. On most games iOS is way smoother than android. It's because the games developed on iOS for very few devices. Android games on the other hand have to be made to run for many kinds of models. I love my note 5 but I just have to accept the fact that games run smoother on iOS because the game developers are able to optimize their apps. This is easily seen in hearthstone for iOS vs android.
My note 5 is my business phone, the iPhone is for gaming. I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for this but the truth is if you want a smooth gaming experience and can't have both operating systems like I do, just go back to iOS.

Yes. Dropped frame rate in games and in animations (scrolling through lists is the worst experience e.g. Youtube Facebook ...). Rooting and new kernel improves significantly, so it' a software issue, not hardware.

Is there any way to actually go against this and set a certain frame rate? Some guy developed an app that did it for the LG G3 but again they're very different devices so
Yes, there is a utility app from Samsung that allows you to adjust the frame rate and other settings as well. It is called Game Tuner, you can get it on the Google Play store. Enjoy!

So I'm fairly new to the Nexus 6, but I have had a Nexus 5 in the past (More recently coming from a Zenfone 2)..I've noticed that while applications open fairly quick on Marshmallow (Even the system UI is fairly smooth), I get a lot lag and jank in scrolling, and applications that work well on my girlfriend's 5x have poor performance on my 6.
Can anyone else relate to this? Apps like Pintrest, Instagram, Tumblr, Ebay, Amazon all aren't as smooth as they should be, and sometimes web browsing can be horrendous (Almost like a touch delay when scrolling).
I've tried clean wipes, flashed the stock images, tried non-stock roms, different kernels, everything I can think of, but to me, the phone just isnt as smooth as I thought it would be. I get that it's over a year old, but I still expected a bit more.
Am I alone here? Again, the UI itself is fine, its more application based \ scrolling based.
Well, the 6 and 5x have the same GPU, more or less. The 5x GPU is miniaturized, but otherwise identical.
The 5x has a 1920x1080 display, or roughly 2 million pixels.
The 6 has a 2560x1440 display..... 3.7 million pixels.
So, why would you possibly imagine that with the SAME GPU, but nearly TWICE the number of pixels, that the 6 would be able to produce the same graphical performance as the 5x?
*** UNREASONABLE EXPECTATIONS!!!

Have you tried turning off the encryption? When I came from the N5 I noticed the phone was not as smooth as the N5 until I turned the encryption off. Early on it made a big difference as they did not have NEON encryption optimizations enabled. Was that was enabled the difference was small but it is still noticeable to me between haveing the encryption running and not. It is not night and day but I think you will notice it.

I don't think expecting a phone that's a little over a year old, (That was a flagship mind you), to run smoothly is unreasonable. While it's pushing more pixels than the 5x, the processor should be quite similar, along with an extra GB of ram.

I am running a modified stock ROM now that has encryption turned off, and it is a little better, but unfortunately you're right, it's not night and day.

I have none of these issues on my 6
Go in developer options and try to turn off all animation transitions, that improved speed for me

I've had my Nexus for 13 months. (Purchased in February 2015). I've rooted and run various ROMs on the device over the last year. Since I have the Next plan with AT&T I've been planning on upgrading soon so a couple weeks ago I went back to unrooted stock. Since then I've been having the same issues you mention. I don't have a 5x to compare to, but it is definitely lagging a lot more than before. Last night I was trying to view something on Amazon, and it just sat there with a white screen. Many times my keyboard stays floating above the homescreen when I press the "home" softkey, or stays floating after I am done typing in Facebook, messenger etc. It just LAGS big time. Also the battery drain has been horrendous. I've been getting so PO'd at it I've been tempted to go get a Note (GASP!) Last night was the last straw I uninstalled swiftkey (been a avid user for years never an issue) and the CM Locker I had installed so I could have a different lock screen photo (since I'm no longer rooted). I'm giving it 24 hours, and if it is still acting up, I am either re-rooting or upgrading (although there's like NOTHING that I like right now for devices).

I just did that. Hopefully that helps with my issue too.
Well, mine is mostly related to the jank when scrolling through applications. The UI, keyboard, ect all works fine. However, The worst is browsing web sites with chrome - I can flick to scroll up and there almost seems to be a second delay sometimes. I've never experienced anything like that before. Also when when using apps such as twitter, amazon, ebay, ect, the scrolling is really bad - Worse than my Zenfone 2.
Again, I've fastboot flash'd the complete stock rom multiple times, tried various kernels\modded roms, ect. They all display this behavior, some worse than others.
I love the size, screen quality, and build of this phone, but for a phone that's last year's Google flagship, I find the performance horrible.
Try turn off animations anyway, you don't have to be rooted, unlocked, yust tap build number 7 times, back to settings/ developer options and put to 0 trazitions, animations,animator..and optionally reboot.

Have to say, I have none of those issues as someone else also stated. If it does the same on stock, it might be hardware related. How does the phone behave in recovery? Is scrolling as normal? What recovery are you using? And when you say you went back to stock, did you do a complete factory reset including deleting all your personal data? If so, you can also try re-locking your bootloader and unlocking it and then flash factory image from Google. That will also erase everything off your device, including personal data.
With thousands of people here on XDA using a Nexus 6, your issue seems to be specific to you and your device. Maybe it is a screen/digitizer issue.
Seemed to me the February build was slow and janky but the the March was back to normal performance for me, op didn't state what build you were on. Might be an option

I'm on the March build. I usually fastboot flash every img myself, then do a factory reset in recovery when trying to get back to stock..This time I just used the Flash-All.bat for the March image and I'll do some testing. I doubt this method is the difference, I'm grasping at straws. I'm semi concerned now if no one else is having these issues...Or maybe my expectations are just too high.
Perhaps I'll try a screen recording app and see if I can capture what I'm running into. It's not all apps, and it's not all the time, but its definitely noticeable.
you're not alone. i recently picked up a ZTE zmax 2 and did a side by side app load speed test. the ZTE zmax 2 loaded up youtube noticeably faster, had thumbnails faster, and played faster when clicking play. the zmax 2 is a midrange ATT phone with Snapdragon 410, 2gb ram, 720p screen. it costs $99 at best buy today..
I've noticed this too between my Nexus 6 (purchased 4/2015) and my wife's Nexus 6 (purchased 10/2015). Hers is noticeably smoother.
I do have occasional screen tearing on mine when I use certain kernel/ROMs, so maybe it's janky hardware.

I know the frustration, for me it is kernel related, but we cant do nothing, we need new device tree by google. I'm really disappointed that g3 has QHD screen with 801 and is smoother than nexus 6 with 805

My wifey has a G3 and I can't agree. When she is using my phone, she is always amazed how fluid it is.

Is your wife g3 on 6.0 marshmellow?
Flashing stock over again really didn't do much for performance. I Did however root it, and increase the GPU clock (Actually set it to performance idles at 300mhz then shoots to 600hmz), and that does seem to help. I can sacrifice battery for better performance in this instance.
Have to agree, at around the end of the day (by 40% battery) my phone slows down. I went pure stock. A quick reboot fixes it. But a tad frustrating
