[Q] Pen mode - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know that this is a good phone with a reasonable, not too big screen size, and wonderful processing package available. But does this phone come with the pen mode? Because sometimes I need to use stylus. I like pen mode because I can even use my pencil. If not, should I pick z3 or note series? Thanks

And also, if this phone comes with pen mode, is the screen responsive?

I'm also interested in this. Maybe pen mode needs to be enabled like this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2652762
Has anyone tried it?

I'm using a metal pen I build for my z ultra using a old 3.5mm audio jack for both devices. You need to activate the glove mode. But sadly it's not as direct as in the z ultra... You get some false touches when "hovering" over the screen

Have you tried the stuff in the thread I mentioned? I haven't unlocked my bootloader and rooted yet so I can't try it.

I'm also at locked bootloader. Sorry

So the linked method of enabling Pen Mode involves editing file /sys/devices/virtual/input/clearpad/pen and changing its contents from 0 to 1.
But even though I can save the file with the new value, when I open it again it is back to 0.
Any ideas?

You need to be rooted and your system must be mounted as RW. Use root explorer

I do have root and system RW and even / RW. I can change the file's owner and its permissions and that does stick. But changing its contents gets reverted immediately, even though there's no error when saving it.

Check out this app. Enabling Glove Mode seems to make pens/pencils work as well.
Here is the thread with more information.

[Q] Removing media volume limit with headphones

I noticed, that media volume can be set only up to 8 steps, when headphones are connected (not to full 15 steps).
I guess it's result of questionable EU safety requirements.
Unfortunately, my headphones are not very sensitive and the volume is very low. Is there any way to remove this limitation?
Thanks in advance for any idea and help.

Install the apk as said, and if you get the warning just dismiss it and increase sound level to 100%
Thanks a lot. I did exactly as said, but the problem remains.
There is no warning, the media volume slider simply won't go beyond 8th step.

Search and download "buildprop editor" or similar app from playstore... There you can easily edit the above given code.. Or if you are confident enough, you can do it manually by going to your phone's root directory using a file explorer (on your phone, no PC required)
Then go to system... It should be like
/system/build.prop
Then open it in text editor and look for the above lines and make changes...
Be careful though, because it might lead to soft bricks if you mess up the build.prop... So I suggest making a copy of the original build.prop and save in sd card

Camera Launch Noise

Anyone know how to turn off the camera launch sound ?
Had a quick look around and can't find any way to do it.
Not talking about the shutter sound, it's the noise that it makes when you press the dedicated camera key to launch the camera app.
So that would be no then?

Maybe you can't do it in the Sony stock ROM, if you've rooted your Z1 though you can probably locate the audio file and delete it, or modify the apk file that calls the audio file and delete the line that actually plays the audio file.

Probably would work but find it incredible that such an intrusive noise like this can't be switch off. Currently the only way to stop it is to turn the volume down on the phone.

I just received my device and I'll have a look for you. I can't provide an easy way to disable the sound though since I'm not that good with smali or whatever. But I can probably locate the audio file and tell you about it. Other than that, wait for the custom roms.
Perhaps it can be replaced by a quieter shorter sound, the current noise is the electronic equivalent of Dom Joly shouting 'I'M USING MY CAMERA'.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Okay I found the audio file for you, didn't do it last night because of other things.
It's located here: /system/app/SemcCameraUI.apk/res/raw/start_up_notifier.wav
I assume you can delete it and you shouldn't have the start up sound anymore. The problem at the moment is that unlocking the bootloader breaks the camera, and I don't feel like breaking my camera to try and see if it works.
Just to be save, make sure you backup your "SemcCameraUI.apk" file before modifying it and if things don't do as planned, put it back.
you dont have to unlock the bootloader to delete that file, root is enough.

That's totally true, but you can't modify the odexed apk file. You first have to deodex it, delete it, then odex it again and see if it works.. speaking of which I can give it a shot. Will report back later!

I don't think you can enable it unless the devs put it in there, afaik. So, if the option isn't there, I'm sure you can do it manually without adding in the code for it yourself :/
But, I think that'd be fantastic.

[how to] [root req.] remove usb flap and back cover pop up warnings

this works on rooted devices only, should work on any variant of the s5.
option 1: with titanium backup, simply freeze "PopupuiReceiver 1.6" and reboot.
option 2: using your choice of root explorer, rename PopupuiReceiver.apk to PopupuiReceiver.apk.bak AND rename PopupuiReceiver.odex to PopupuiReceiver.odex.bak, and reboot.
the annoying notifications warning about the USB flap cover and the back cover will be gone.

that's possible. I prefer to freeze apps even instead of removing or renaming. I put the rename option out there as an option in case someone doesn't want to use titanium backup (don't know why...). heck, you could even remove them from /system/app/ with a root explorer.
anyway, my issue with removing system apps is that you're manipulating the system. if you ever needed to un-root and revert to stock without access to a computer that would not be truly possible. if something is frozen with titanium, a factory reset restores it.
just personal preference...

Popup IS stupid
It would have been nice to have the cover popup only popup when the cover isn't closed all the way like the USB cover. Why remind us every time? Useless feature.

I wish there is a way to disabling those pop-up warnings without compromising the phone's warranty by doing root process. I almost gave up buying the S5 because of this problem. Such a shame for an amazing phone like this. This was gonna be my first smartphone ever and I'm not a fan of avoiding the warranty in the first day. Never done that root thing and not a clue how doing it. It would be much easier if Samsung just provided option of turning pop-up warnings off so that they never occured again. But no, only for Verizon models... At least it is good to know that there is a solution. This made me there is a chance that I might buy the S5...
Hey, in case I buy the S5, if I do root thing, does the phone still get the updates from Samsung?

I would also love to know this too. I have been looking for a way to do this for awhile. Even went as far as flashing a ROM to remove it. Much easier!
Please, anyone know the solution for this one too?
Glad I found this thread. I have a sprint s5, so once I root it I will be doing this. Very annoying that anytime I unplug the charger it reminds me with the stupid pop up.

[MOD]-No Root DPI Changer [WIN Program]

Hi everyone!
Made a small stand alone program that will connect, display & change your DPI for any android device with USB Debugging activated and appropriate drivers installed.
Backstory:
It seems Im one of the unlucky ones with a currently un-rootable H831 and I had wanted to change allot on this phone on the system level. One of the current mods I always implemented was a DPI change.
DPI change on a non-rooted phone is not a problem and is outlined here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/help/how-to-change-dpi-root-t3351366 and is using adb commands to do so.
** But I wanted an easier way to change my DPI and have reference to density & resolution without using ADB and cmd commands all the time. Also my wife can change her DPI like this on any PC without hassle. Therefore I wrote this little program that will display density, resolution and allow you to change it on your phone easily by just running it stand-alone. Since I put the effort into it already, thought I would share & maybe someone could use it the way my wife and I are
Anywho, I also attached some operational screenshots.

Hm... I may have to try a new DPI again then. I know SwiftKey used to have issues whenever the DPI was changed to where the keyboard would appear very magnified but still worked as normal, you just couldn't see which keys you were pressing. If SwiftKey now supports different DPIs, I guess I'll have to try changing mine again! Any chance you can post a screenshot with SwiftKey open?
Is it possible to change the actual resolution to achieve more performance and battery using this program?
Good workaround! However, the always-on display is distorted. Is there a way to fix this?

Solution? to what? an over paranoid antivirus program lol!
Dude, In order to get an ADB terminal working I obviously need the ADB DLLs and my program when executed plops the 2 DLLs needed into a temp folder and also keeps ADB sevice open on the system. An antivirus program sees the dropped dlls and the live system service running as suspicious, but believe me its not.

Yes, There are commands using ADB that can change the render resolution mode so I would need to program it in as an option. Maybe I could look into adding that in the future.

No fix for this. You would need a rooted phone and that service framework modded on the system level to even attempt to fix DPI issues with the always-on display. Workaround - deactivate it, or see if there are any third party ones.
Awesome thanks. Just got my H831 today. Sad there is no root yet.
