I was trying to get rid of the kindle fire hd's media player on my rooted kindle fire.
rooting was no problem using XDA's exellent documentation, but I deleted Media provider .apk before making a backup.
I think it is what makes the Kindle show up as a media device, and now both my computer and my kindle don't recognise each other.
If I switch to ADB mode, the computer does something, but otherwise, I can't do anything with it. WiFi still works, though. The file was located in:
/system/app
Can anyone find it for me and post a download or something? I think deleting that apk was the cause of it.
Would really appreciate it.

Can someone make a recommendation? I basically want to sideload some apk's & pictures, videos & books. I was using Calibre for sideloading non B&N books with Win Explorer for wallpaper. I was partially successful at getting USB ADB working, got driver working, but realized that Windows now does not see the NC as a mass storage device & Calibre will not ID it. Am I better off just putting apk's on the sd card & installing via Astro file mgr? Any insight on this subject is appreciated.
Thanks,
kev

For me... Got my NC for Christmas ! I followed the BN instructions to download and update my NC to 1.0.1. I then followed the instructions for using Auto-Nooter and then these for setting up the USB drivers in Windows:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=882751
And it works for all cases. I can use ADB, Windows sees it as a mass storage device and Calibre connects to it. Something could be wrong with your USB setup. Try checking out the thread I used.
OK, as long as Win. still sees it as before & Calibre still works, I will try to get ADB working over USB. Right now Windows "computer" doesn't see it, but it shows in Device Mgr as Android Phone/Android ADB interface. The NC is ON & displaying the USB mode screen. Since explorer doesn't see it, I can't eject it. As I said, I will back up & try the ADB setup again. If anyone knows what I did wrong, please speak up. I will be working on this this afternoon. Should I remove the ADB driver & start from the beginning?
Thanks,
Kev
Update: Got it working. At least it reported the serial number when I ran "adb devices". I can now see the NC in explorer & device mgr shows the device. I now need to learn to use these new adb tools. Any helpful instructions I can read?
Thanks,
kev
If using my computer and I find an apk. I want to install, I use dropbox. I then open dropbox on the NC download the apk and install it.
Also the Wireless ADB app works well too.
I honestly have no clue why so many people are mucking around with ADB and command lines. If people like doing things the hard way, fine, install apps via ADB, but there are much simpler ways to do things.
Yes, there are a handful of things that need to be done by ADB, but installing standard apps is not one of them.
EDIT: Reworded for clarity of target.

Well, I did ask for recommendations in the OP! Care to make one?
Cheers,

Oh, certainly, what I meant was a file manager is great for it, as it's the other method you mentioned. Dropbox is by far the easiest way I've found to move things from your PC to your Android device, too.
My comment about people "doing things the hard way" wasn't specifically directed at you, either, although upon looking back it does seem to come off that way. I'll fix it. Anyway, what I meant was that everywhere I go I see people posting very long sets of commands for people to type in to ADB or the Terminal so that they can accomplish things that are easily done with the push of a button or two in the appropriate app. And then I see lots of people responding with "It didn't work" which usually means they typed something wrong.
The command line is wonderful because it's so powerful and precise, but that doesn't mean it should be used for every simple task.
I find that the majority of things that I need to do can be done with Root Explorer.
I want to try different rom on TP. I need to factory reset in order to install a different rom.
I downloaded a lot of books from Kindle app and Zinio. I'm wondering if there is anyway to back up the books.

Don't know about Zinio but for Kindle the main content is kept on the SD card under a top level folder called Kindle and also a folder under sdcard/Android/data/com.amazon.kindle. A reset should leave those alone but you might want to back them up. In addition the databases that tell the Kindle app what you have downloaded are in the normal app databases place which would be backed up by a app backup application like Titanium. So if you have backed up your apps then a restore after the reset then the app should be able to find all your kindle stuff.
Unless you're doing something out of the ordinary, there's no need to back them up. They reside on the server and are automatically associated with your respective accounts. When you change ROMs (or even from Android to iOS or whatever), you just install the correct app, log in, and re-download whatever you want to have locally. I've noticed that the Kindle app will sometimes realize that it thinks you have it downloaded because of another installation, so it'll prompt you to remove and re-download, but you still get it in quick order. This has worked fine for me with Kindle, Nook, Zinio, Google Books, and really every other similar app I've tried.

I understand I can redownload them from the server, but I just don't want to spend extra time to download them. Thanks.
For me, if I flash a new ROM, Amazon shows me as using a newer device within the Kindle app. So I have to redownload most of them all the time anyway - unless I'm just doing an upgrade to the ROM itself. So if you're planning on changing ROM's, know that you probably are going to have to get them again. You can try to back it all up using something like Titanium, but know that it may not work. I say may.
Just backup the kindle app+data and restore it on the new rom. Theres plenty of apps that you can use like app extractor, rom toolbox, nandroid browser, etc.

I don't know. I have all my books and I didn't use the backup files.
One thing you can do it, after installing Kindle app, rename your device to the name you used last time.
I apologize if these questions have already been answered but I didn't see them in any Nook HD+ forum/thread.
1) I downloaded some books from B&N prior to rooting the Nook. I then rooted the Nook HD+ and I can still read the books thru the default reader but I can't seem to locate them in any folder. I tried two different file viewers from Google Play and can't seem to find them anywhere. Does anybody have an idea of where they could be stored? I know they are stored locally somewhere since I have WiFi turned off. My reason for asking is I would like to access them from the new launcher (using another reader) rather then going to the B&N home page.
2) My next question involves connecting to my desktop. I use openSUSE and run WinXP in an Openbox VM. Whether in Linux or using WinXP in VM I can't access the folders on Nook. I was able to get the drivers working to use ADB (in the WinXP VM only), but I can't get any folders to show up in a file manager. Well, I actually get one folder to show up, called "NOOK", but it has very limited storage. I tried this with both developer mode on Nook turned on and off. I can transfer files to Nook (and see personal folders) when using Win Media player and Nook set to MTP, but I can't see any folders with a file manager. Any idea on what is going on? BTW, it would be nice if I could see everything from Linux without having to use WinXP.
Thanks for any help. Also, many, many thanks to Someone0 for the simple root instructions. Much better use of the Nook HD with general Android apps available.
Rich

Thanks...that helps. Wonder what the purpose of the /sdcard/B&N Downloads directory is. Very confusing.

No clue...the external sd card also gets a B&N Downloads folder.
I am a noob and was wondering if there is anything less dramatic than a full system restoration that I can do to make my kindle fire hd to download and run apps again…
I don’t think I’ve hard or soft bricked my rooted kindle fire because I can I can still turn my device on , browse the internet, and open my app draw to see a few apps. With that said I can’t download anything that is not already on my kindle and I no longer have a file explorer to look at system files. The only apps I can open are the kindle store, a downloaded “free your kindle” app, and a launcher from the free your kindle app. I know I still have root access because my superuser still appears to be still working. If i try to open any other apps, the screen turns black and flashes back to the home screen.
(where the problem started)-
I rooted by kindle fire hd 8,9 , successfully downloaded Google play store and got the apps I wanted. Then I got paranoid or greedy, and deleted some of the of the Amazon apps (not sure which ones). Next I ran a “free your kindle app” and the Google play store stopped working. I got really mad and decided to start over by resetting the device to factory settings. The reset successfully deleted all of my applications and I no longer have access to a file explorer, and must have deleted something else because I can no longer download an app store to get the file explorer as I no longer have access to the Google play store. Is there a way I can get system access again?
Sorry if I missed the answer to this in a different thread, Thank you for making this site and contributing her knowledge.

Restoring a system.img would be the easiest and most straightforward way to fix your device. Is there a reason you're trying to avoid this?
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire using Tapatalk 2
You deleted critical system files and then reset your device which deleted the rest of the apps that had a chance at helping you. The only answer is to restore with one of the tools found here in these forums.

Hi All,
This is a desperate plea!!
My daughter deregistered my kindle (the screen was password protected and she tried to break into it and clicked whatever was being displayed it seems. She is only 5 !!) and when I re registered it all my files that I have downloaded the whole year are lost! I got normal books back. However, I have downloaded many pdf books related to all sorts of things, which I normally view using ES File explorer. I had Dolphin and firefox android browsers, which are gone too. Everything is gone now. Is there a way to restore my files ?
I have installed ES File explorer but can't see any of the files.
Many thanks in advance.

Any items available from Amazon will still be available from your Amazon profile. Anything you independently owned will not be retrievable if you made no back up. Did you make a nandroid backup? I would recommend using Titanium Backup from now on. In this situation the items would be retrievable.
Hi Thank you all for yout responses. I am looking for a data retrieval program that can retrieve files from kindle hard drive, especially free. The ones I have tried are not listing Kindle hard drive, though I can see the Kindle in the WIndows explorer after connecting it to the PC.
I will try to do it with Ubuntu..Hope it works. more ideas please?
That's because your PC doesn't have raw data access to the emmc, least I don't believe it does, it uses a mtp connection which is kinda like a network share in a sense. Short of pulling the emmc off the motherboard and soldering it to a USB SD card reader and using data retrieval software that supports the ext4 filesystem I don't see a way to recover the data unless there's a data recovery app in the Google marketplace. Sorry that this is a bit of a downer...
