Okay. You can try the steps below:
1) Unlock bootloader
2) Flash custom recovery
3) Root your phone
4) Boot into recovery and restore from there
5) Reboot your phone to see if the problem is solved.
If the problem that you were facing is solved then
6) Full unroot you device
7) Reflash stock recovery
8) Relock the bootloader *
Done! And now, you will be able to install the OTA updates .
--------
*If you are not rooted and have stock recovery in your phone already, I don't think locking your bootloader is necessary to install the OTA updates.

No. But you will be able to download the OTA updates but it will not be installed on your phone.
Installing OTA updates require Stock Recovery.
You need to unlock your bootloader and then flash the stock recovery for your phone.
So how i install stock recovery bro pls tell

How did you flash custom recovery with locked bootloader???
Sent from my A1 using XDA Free mobile app
Follow the instructions below.
1) Backup all your important data
2) Download the zip file from the attachment and extract it into a folder of your choice
3) Enable USB Debugging on your phone and connect it to your PC via USB cable
4) Open the folder where you extracted the downloaded attachment
5) Run "Unlock Bootloader.bat" file. Follow the on-screen instructions. This will unlock your bootloader and will factory reset your phone. Your phone will now reboot automatically.
6) Go to Settings >> About Phone >> Tap on Build Number 10 times >> Go back to Settings >> Developer Mode >> Allow USB Debugging . A pop-up message will appear on your screen asking you to confirm USB Debugging from your PC. Tap on Allow.
7) Now, connect your phone again by enabling USB Debugging mode.
8) Run "Recovery Installer.bat" from the extracted folder. Now, your phone has stock recovery (for Micromax Canvas A1). Your phone will now reboot automatically.
9) Again, Run "Lock Bootloader.bat" file from the extracted folder. This will relock your bootloader.
---------------------
Now, your bootloader is locked and you have stock recovery in your phone. You can confirm this by booting your phone into recovery.
Now, you'll be able to install the OTA Updates.
DONE!
Moreover the official image file here: Android One Stock Recovery.img (KitKat) can be used to flash the stock recovery from fastboot mode or using flashify app in rooted phone.
nope that dosent work

Hello,
I have 4.4.2 installed on my One. I had rooted it with custom recovery. But as sense 6 is there I un-rooted it, locked it properly and removed tampered flag. Installed stock recovery and also put it in S-ON.
I can download OTA but while installing it is failing. It is showing red triangle and restarting it.
Can somebody help me to proceed further? If I go to HTC, will they update it?
I think , preload file is wiped when u unlocked ur device

Your problem is the current ROM is not 100% stock, some files are missing especially the preload.
1. What is your current software version no. ?
2. unlock the bootloader again and flash TWRP
3. flash a stock ROM.zip of your version no. or restore a proper nandroid backup
4. reboot and do the normal setup
5. reboot to bootloader
6. flash the stock recovery
7. reboot and do the OTA
So ... solve the no. 1 first.

Hey,
My software version number is 4.20.707.7 with HBOOT 1.56. I don't have stock ROM readily available anywhere like htc1guru etc., so I am downloading it from one of the xda thread.
Now
I will install TWRP,
reset stock ROM (there is also an option of installin stock recovery) once my download finishes.
Then again will lock boot loader,
put S ON back
update sense 6 OTA.

1. There is another file that you need to flash after that ROM zip.
See : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52981541&postcount=57

Hi guys, today I am going to share this simple tutorial on how to root without unlocking bootloader of sprout.. Many people asked me how to do so I am here to create a simple tut for everyone..
Requirements
1. Any custom recovery for sprout (I prefer philz http://forum.xda-developers.com/cro...e-general/sprout-philz-touch-v6-57-9-t2887574 )
2. Fastboot files (google for minimal fastboot) and fastboot drivers
3. Supersu update zip (http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu)
Proceedure
1. Install fastboot drivers and fastboot files..
2. Rename the custom recovery as "recovery.img"
3. Place the recovery.img within fastboot directory (where the fastboot.exe located)
4. Put supersu.zip in root of your phone's sd card
5. Connect your android one device to pc using usb cable in fastboot mode (switch off phn and press power+vol up and then select fastboot)
6. Use the following fastboot command
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
This command will not flash the recovery, it will just let your phone boot into recovery and it will work on locked bootloader
7. You will get the recovery menu then. Install the previously downloader supersu.zip from external sd card using the recovery menu.
8. Congratulation, You have successfully rooted your android one device without unlocking bootloader...:good:
Here is a video guide created by @thesaurabh7777, u can check it..

thanks
Thank you. Just what i wanted.
Anyone tried? And how to unroot if needed ?
UPDATE : I tried. It works and works like charm. I have created CWM backup of my stock ROM, rooted device and installed xposed also.
You can always unroot from settings in SuperSu - Which essentially removes itself and su binaries.

Hi, if I root my device this way, just to backup some apps via TB, and not modify the system any other way, are you sure just unrooting will be enough to safely apply the Kitkat to Lollipop OTA?
I've read about this new "verified boot" thing in Lollipop, which essentially means if you modify system partition in any way, even if just to add the SU app/binaries, the OTA will fail (where it obviously didn't use to, before lollipop). I'm not sure if this verified boot thing will apply to the OTA for Kitkat to Lollipop too, or just updates From Lollipop to future versions.
(AP did an article just a couple of weeks back, check it out here: http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/1...e-means-update-will-fail-system-modified-way/ )
I have made a backup of Stock ROM before rooting it,so when LOLLIPOP arrives and in case i have changes some system files, i can simply restore the stoock ROM to recieve the updates right???

No. But I do have a backup that I had created using CWM recovery. But currently, I have flashed Philz recovery on my phone as it has more feature than CWM recovery.

thanks that was useful...but...
dude,
great job... will definitely hit the THANKS button... the procedure of running into recovery without installing a custom recovery is indeed very helpful. but i got caught in a slight snag: (a) i choose backup, (b) it suddenly pops an error [it was about to finish the backing up procedure] and does not continue.
questions:
a) to do the backup procedure - will it REQUIRE an unlocked bootloader?
b) will one also have to root first, that is, using the 'virtual custom recovery', should one install ROOT ACCESS first, then REBOOT, then proceed with backing up following your procedure?
thanks so much,
bod68
So i have successfully installed a custom recovery on my phone running Marshmallow and also unlocked the bootloader!
Its quite simple actually!
I am not responsible for any damage you make to your phone!
Steps-
1. Download the zip file from the link and extract it.
2. Install both the drivers and then proceed!(The drivers are universal and work for Windows 98,xp,vista,7,8,8.1,10 but in 8,8.1,10 you might need to turn off the digital signature verification-Make good use of google)
3.After installing the drivers , connect your phone in switched on and remember to turn on usb debugging in the dev options!
4. Open the unlock_bootloader_... and run the .bat file and follow the on screen steps( All the data will be formatted so make a backup beforehand)
5.After doing this you will void your warranty so make sure you know what you are doing!
6. Open the one click installer folder and replace the recovery.img with any recovery that you want.
7. Now again connect your phone in switched on mode and usb debugging on and run the .bat file of recovery installer.. and follow the on screen steps!
8.As soon as the the recovery installation is over do not let teh phone reboot just press the vol up button as the installation process stops and then go to recovery!
9.Boom!! Now you have a phone with unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery installed on marshmallow!!
10.Flash custom Kernels,Boot Animations, Logos and root your phone running marshmallow and brag!

Recovery Kernel?
Hi bro just a quick question did you use the MM kernel in the custom recovery?
On our None AOSP standard Mediatek devices the rom does a Kernel check to ensure both the boot and recovery Kernels are of the same version eg KK boot = KK Recovery LP boot = LP Recovery so I just wondered if the MM Kernel still works in the Philz recovery or are you still using a kernel from a older version of android eg KK or LP.
Hope that makes sense to you

Asus ZE500KL (may work on ZE500KG, but haven't tested, do it on your own risk) on Marshmallow, NOT LOLLIPOP!
Also, it must have fully booted AT LEAST one time, otherwise, you'll soft-brick it.
If your phone is not on Marshmallow, you can use THIS guide insteadDownload and put the unlocker zip file and the SuperSu zip file in the phone
How To:
1 - Install adb and fastboot driver (follow THIS guide)
Now you can connect the phone to your computer2 - Reboot in fastboot mode with one of the following method:
a -Volume Up while booting upb -With adb, after enabling USB debugging in developer settings, using:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Now that you are in bootloader, you have to boot in TWRP,
download THIS recovery (is the twrp one) and boot in to it, using this command:
IMPORTANT: DON'T FLASH IT OR YOU WILL GET BOOTLOOP!!!
Code:
fastboot boot TWRP-x-x-x-x.img
(Obviusly the recovery name must be the one you downloaded)
IMPORTANT: DON'T FLASH IT OR YOU WILL GET BOOTLOOP!!!
It should automaticaly enter in recovery.
Now you MUST flash FIRST ZE500KL_BootloaderUnlock.zip, otherwise you'll brick your phone
Btw, the recovery will mount your phone's memory, so you can put now the files in the phone, if you forgot to do it before
AFTER you installed the unlocker zip, you can install the SuperSu zip
When the install is complete, clear the cache and reboot your phone, now you can enjoy your root!

So.. I'm thinking of buying a ZE500KL and I've been doing some reading on this phone on the forums.. did it really just get unlocked like yesterday? does that mean custom roms from now on?

I would recommend Z00L/T, you will get cm13, official unlock at least.
You Say " May Work On ZE500KG" Is ze500kg already receive Marshmallow Update?

Working! Have you tried to flash Viper4Android? On lollipop this will break Call recording and FM Radio, maybe this will not be a problem on MM?

i think isnt permanent, this step is needed to boot into twrp then flashing a unlockBL..
to make permanent.. the command must "fastboot flash recovery twrp_X.X.X.X.img"
but make sure to unlock bootloader first...

Is it me or everytime I reboot the device after rooted, it's going back to unrooted?
Root is a success tho, great job, OP!
Edit: okay, not every reboot, but after several reboots, then it went back unrooted
