Which one are you guys using?
It pisses me off that hangouts archives pics regardless of setting. I was surprised to goto picasa/google+ photos and see every pic ever sent via hangouts there. Until Google changes this, I've gone back to stock SMS.

Both. I use SMS normally but I use Hangouts when my girlfriend is at work because she has chrome and the hangouts extension on her work computer.
I like hangouts.
Are any of you having trouble with Hangouts? When sending a reply message/text or simply navigating through the app, it's slow and clunky. A lot slower than any other app on the phone.
It seems to have really noticeable micro-pauses when sending a message and the text box animation comes up. Maybe I'm the only one having this issue?

Holy cow, stock SMS is so ugly... the three default backgrounds and the bubble styles... looks like Cookie Monster vomit.
I'm using Hangouts and couldn't be happier. And MMS works on it with WiFi Calling, which was a pleasant surprise!
Stock mms need wificalling text and mms over wifi hangouts dont do that

I've been using hangouts. My gf was having issues sending messages yesterday but other than that we've hadn't had any issues.

What apn settings is Hangouts using? (Hangout settings) Also, what apn is your phone set to?
Screenshots would be awesome!
Ive been using Stock but mainly because I feel like Hangouts isn't as speedy as it use to be on my Note 3.
Mms over wifi doesn't work in hangouts right not the Google.Com but when it's set as default using ur number

Tried that once mms over wifi didn't work for me
I tried Hangouts but couldn't stand how it wouldn't use my contact pictures, it would only use their Google+ contact picture and most my contacts don't have a Google+ so it was a blank picture. Am I right here or is there a setting that eluded me?

Same experience here. Seems like sending hangout message is fine, but sending an SMS slows it down considerably to a point that SwiftKey stops registering swipes for a couple of seconds.
Hangouts seemed a big slow at times, and also would send pictures only when it felt like it. I could find no pattern to when it would or wouldn't. Stock works all the time, recently switched to the lolipop messaging app.

haven't had any issues yet, slower than using stock app but still goes through for ME. Takes around 4-5 minutes to round trip send myself one and receive it.

Same here. It's pretty slow.
A good way to get any of the MMS to send almost as fast as it does in stock messaging app is to attempt to send the MMS and you can immediately make a call or AirPlane Mode or Mobile Data toggle it and then hang up or disable AirPlane Mode or Enable Mobile Data and it'll send much quicker. The phone call method only when on 3G though, not LTE
How is the interaction with google voice? I frequently dont receive messages using GV integrated on sprint.
Hangouts took control of the voicemail on my phone after I enabled SMS. Instead of getting a voicemail notification I received a text saying I had a message.

It's ok. Full integration won't be until May 2014 though.

Were you able to figure out how to disable that sms voicemail? I'd rather use the visual voicemail that came with HTC One.
No, I had to undo sms with hangouts.

I was having the same problem. Download System Panel lite from the play store. Open GV then press back. Open System Panel and tap on GV in the list then tap exclude. This will stop the service from being flushed.
The problems i have with MMS is that it has to be on 3G to send. Otherwise (if i am on 4G or Wifi) it wont send.
I currently have a mod to enable MMS on wifi with the stock app, that also takes the compression off.
Also. It wont send SMS when roaming. I need to be on sprint.
Do you guys expreience this too? Or is it just all the mods i have affecting my phone?
Not Sure But..
Theres an Stock Messaging app in the play store that does SMS over Wifi.
Its basically the CM messaging app with some extra goodies.
Its called 8SMS
id supply a link but XDA isnt letting me post a link since im new. Sigh

So strange issue. I enabled SMS for Hangouts thinking I could deal with its inability to split text messages. Turns out I can't, oops....
ANYWAYS, Typically when this is enabled you can disable it in the SMS settings under Hangouts. This seems to not be the case anymore. Trying to edit the SMS settings now takes me to the general "settings" area of the phone as if I had selected the "gear" icon in the apps list or quick settings area of the phone. has anyone else run into this issue of 4.4.2? Have you found a solution? I would appreciate any assistance.
So are you trying use the HTC messages as the default instead of hangouts?

I've been using Hangouts lately for SMS needs but lately, I have not been receiving a notification for every new message. I have all the default notification settings turned on and I still won't get every notification...
Essentially, I'm asking what messaging apps we all use on the HTC One that don't hog the battery. I want to change messaging apps but I feel that the popular messaging apps on the Play Store are huge battery drains with their hundreds of useless functions and features.
I'd like to use the default messaging app but I can NOT stand the 5 lines of the message editor that show up every time I go to reply to a text message. Its just a nit-picky thing, but it bothers me that it wastes all that real estate on the screen with empty space...
Can't wait to see what everybody thinks and I'll be conducting some battery tests in the days to come as well. :good:
I was using 8sms and loving it. Just moved back to android after a spell with an iPhone. Won't get my One back until May.

If you're on kitkat, EvolveSMS looks really good with the kitkat theme though last I'd checked its interface was slightly laggy. Great app nonetheless
Does evolve sms allow mms over WiFi ?

I'm not sure but when I tried evolve it was compressing my photos even after adjusting the mms settings. The stock mms app didn't compress the same photo

I've been pleased with hello sms. Multiple recipient messages actually work, and it's relatively light. Best of all, it's very nicely organized.
One issue though: sending picture messages is wonky due to square reformatting. I still use the stock app for this, but changes get picked up by hello without issue.
That was my issue with hangouts. Mms was problematic most days.

One other problem with Hello SMS is that we cannot delete individual messages from a thread. We can only delete the entire thread, not a particular message from it.
This is my wife's new X. She wanted a freaking Iphone but I talked her into this. Just some color here.
She now has a notification in the tool bar that reads "messages unable to send." If you pull it down, it brings you to the general text app. There is nothing that tells her WHAT messages didn't send. It's driving her crazy. Even to the point of her going to Verizon (which she despises) who were, of course, zero help. Made her delete all her texts and it's still happening. All her texts read as sent and if you exit the text app, the notification goes away for a few seconds then reappears.
Need to know if any of you guys have an idea of why this is happening and if so, how to stop it.
She'll turn that thing into an iphone by the end of the week if I can't figure it out.
Thanks gang.
Does she have an active mobile data connection? I think she needs that to text on Verizon, wifi may not be sufficient.

Anyone else have a guess? It's driving her nuts.
Are her messages actually being sent and received?
Remove her sim and reinsert.
Google the Verizon APN settings and confirm they are correct in network settings.
Try a different texting app. I'd recommend Textra or hangouts.
If none of that works reply here I'm sure there will be more help incoming.
I sometimes have this problem when sending pictures to iPhones, it will constantly fail to send. Rebooting usually solves it

Have you tried Settings > Apps > swipe R to L to get to All > Messaging > Force stop > Clear cache > Clear data. Restart and try another message. Or as others have suggested, try another messaging app. I really like 8SMS and have set that as my default messaging app and set Active Notifications to show 8SMS notifications by default.
Switched to Chomp SMS and it's fine.
Thanks all.

I had the same problem before the 4.4.3 update. It was picture mail that wouldn't send. Our APNs have a dedicated MMS APN that needed to be configured for my mvno . once I configured the APN I rebooted and it sent whatever picture mail I had been trying to send out.

A lot of people actually seem to be having trouble with SMS after the 4.4.3 update. It generally seems to be because they've disabled the app "messaging" and for whatever reason, they can't reenable it after the update.
It doesn't make much sense though, because texting apps can't rout messages through other apps anymore.

I'd been getting the unsent SMS every couple days on 4.4.2. I used 'Permission Friendly Apps' to find what had 'Send SMS' permissions. I don't use Skype from my phone, so I uninstalled it. I also disabled SMS and turned off the 'Improve Hangouts' option in Hangouts. After about a week, still no mysterious empty message.
It's not proof any of that fixes anything, but may be worth a try?

I have 2 gmail accounts work and personal and it is a pain in the butt looking for different contacts in hangouts because you can only use one account at a time they dont combine the contacts of the 2 accounts
It seems like Hangouts does not work with the Galaxy Gear (watches), huh?
my choice messenger will always be WhatsApp (messaging, voice/video clips, voice calling) for its simplicity, yet is pretty feature-packed. i hate what Talk has become (since it became Hangouts Messenger). but for voice or video calling, i ultimately prefer WeChat. the quality is really good and it holds on to a connection pretty well (doesn't disconnect so easily) when in poor signal conditions.

I like the way Google Messenger and Hangouts work with group messages but for right now I can't get with the lag that both app have so im sticking with the stock messaging app for the moment. if they update them to make the more fluent I will jump on hangouts. Google Messenger also have too many colors.
I went back to the stock messaging app, Google hangouts doesn't have quick reply, and it lags.

I noticed the new 4.0 version of Hangouts lags backing out of app and opening some MMS. Clearning cache/data and reverting to previous stock version fixes the lag.
I'm currently using Google messenger. It does lag a bit.

Hangouts notifications were really inconsistent for me on the Note 3, so I'm not even going to bother testing with the N5. I have my Google Voice integrated into Hangouts, and I use it occasionally for work chatter, but nothing that requires any sort of reliability.
I only stick with stock apps if they off what I want, and that's mainly a Quick Reply feature. I was using Google Messenger as my SMS app because my last phone (One M8) did not have that built in. Since the Note 5 does have it, I found no need to use Google Messenger anymore. And I like the stock app cause I can quick reply while in landscape aswell. Google Messenger would only allow you to quick reply in portrait.

If you are using the stock keyboard because you like google's speech-to-text, check out the swype xposed plugin 'SwypeTweaks.' Replaces the dragon voice with google's. I get lots of lag in several apps with the Samsung keyboard on my Note 5...Swype all the way for me.
