Other phones to consider - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Unfortunately, I will not be purchasing the phablet, it is simply to big for my taste and small hands. I was gutted when the rumors of it being 6 inches ended up being true. So, I am now lost as to what other phones to look into as I would like to upgrade my Nexus 4.
What are some phones with similar specs to the Nexus 6 without the ginormous size? I travel quite a bit so a good camera is a must.
Cheers!

The Sony Z3 looks interesting. The Verizon Z3v isn't quite as good, but I'm guessing you're not on Verizon.

I know this is the Nexus forum but the LG G3 might be a good one to put on the list. Still top specs and large screen without the weight and size.

Z3 Compact. Great specs and one of the best battery test in the market.

If the Moto X had a 3000 battery it would be my new phone.

Same situation, that's what I'm trying to do!

I would get the Droid turbo if I wasn't getting the Nexus. I believe there will be a GSM variant. Smaller but huge battery. I would also consider the OPO.

Ditto what hockeyman12c said. Droid Turbo or the GSM variant (Moto X Play) have nearly the same specs as the Nexus 6 but in a smaller form factor.

Droid turbo, opo or whatever phone that has huge battery.

Was once the best phone you couldn't buy.
Now it isn't the best phone, the company selling it has the worst customer support in the industry, the Q/C is no bueno...and...wait for it...you still can't buy it even if you wanted to.
Posting their "pre-order" 2 days before Nexus6 is just monumentally stupid timing.

My first recommendation would be the Moto X. I just got mine and it is one seriously amazing device. Same look and feel as the N6, stock Android, unlocked bootloader if you get the Pure Edition... It got kind of a bad rap for its battery, but believe me, it's not as bad as its rating would have you believe. I can get 6 hours screen time, no problem. I can't recommend it enough.
Another option would be the Nexus 5, which is still a beast of a phone. It definitely has at least another year of life left, especially with Android L on the horizon which makes it a completely different phone. I just flashed L on it last night, and it makes me want to use it as my daily driver again, even though I just bought the iPhone 6 and 2014 Moto X. You can't go wrong if you get the N5.

If you are in the US, droid turbo is a good choice

Another vote for the Z3C, battery life is a beast. 7.5 SOT over 13 hours of heavy usage. (no games though)

The Moto X or Note 3 or LG G2 or Nexus 5??

Which one y'all this going to be the best? Right now I have the Moto X and it's the best phone I had so far but what about these other great phones are they just as good or better? Will the Nexus 5 be like the Moto X just with a bigger screen and a little differences? What y'all think?
Sent from my XT1056 using Tapatalk
I have the SGS4 and honestly I'm so over skins on android. so no matter what the specs on a phone I'm done with anything skinned. That said I am torn between the Moto X and nexus 5. The 5 maybe has better specs but I really love the X and want motorola and the USA made X to do well. So in in the fence. 60% Moto x 40% nexus 5
I tried the Note 2 last year and hated the huge size. So for that reason the Note 3 is completely out of the question (even though i'd love it).
The LG G2 is out of the question for me also because in my opinion if i'm gonna get a 5" phone it's going to be the Nexus 5.
That being said, I love my Moto X. I have one more week to return it to AT&T and decide if I want something else but i'm not sure what i'm going to do.
From what I can tell the only advantages to the Nexus 5 will be the larger screen, the fact that it's LCD (which I prefer) and the development will probably be awesome.
The Moto X has SUCH good battery life, comfortable size, active notifications, and as someone else mentioned... built in the US which I like.
I'm pretty torn between the X and the Nexus 5 and ultimately i'll probably end up keeping the X and if anything i'll sell it down the road and pick up a Nexus 5 off contract.

Its posts like this that make me want the X and not wait for the nexus 5
Yea I got the Moto X on the first of October so it's to late for me if I wanted to switch. I have Sprint. I love the phone but I have a feeling it's going to be like the Nexus 5 so it's no need to bring the Nexus 5 but I hope it gets Updated just as fast as the Nexus phones.

Are you still using an S4? It's hard to appreciate how awesome the Moto X is until you actually use it.
Every night I still have between 20-40% battery with 2-5 hours screen on time over about 16 hours.
I've never seen anything like it except phones like the Note.

Yes unfortunately haven't decided if I want to plunge the 600-650 for the moto x or wait and see what the nexus 5 costs
I hope the Sprint Moto X gets updates right away. And when I went to Sprint I was going to get the IPhone 5C but then I saw the Moto X so I got it and I made a good decision it's a very awesome phone.

Well that changes things a bit in my opinion. If I were looking at paying full retail for the Moto X or potentially as low as $349-399 for the Nexus 5 I would absolutely choose the Nexus 5 every single time.

Phone is up. Selling it a 32g Samsung SD and the S view cover
I know I hate skinned android and I dont have much time to flash or keep up with the latest ROMS, so LG, Samsung, and HTC were out for me. I picked up the moto X and I will probably hold onto it for a little while and then sell if for the nexus.
That being said, the X is an awesome phone. Great form factor, active notifications are awesome, good battery, no lag or issues.

Touchwiz has it's pluses and minuses, and yeah it's ugly, I much prefer the nexus software, I'm currently using an N5, but I will also make pretty good use of the s pen, I definitely miss it at times.... plus, the possibility of a zerolemon extended battery.

The Nexus 6 is just a big phone. The Note series are a true phablet. You can live with it for ebooks. I'm a heavy user. I currently charge my Nexus 5 2-3x a day.

Sell my S5 and get a Moto X 2nd gen

Hey guys i know people are going to have very different opinions but what do you guys think i should do? I really like the look of moto x and like the fact that i can customize the look in moto maker. S5 doesnt really have any huge features that i use. The only thing i would miss is the camera as i take pics of my 10 month old son.
moto x has the cool notification thing and stuff. And the fact i have the £100 off promo code. I would be looking at tue 32gb model and can get around £260 for my S5.
So is it worth buying the moto x and selling the s5?

I can tell you as a moto x owner, its a great piece of hardware IF, if don't mind the camera producing barely adequate photos and below adequate battery life. If you don't mind these two then its perfect for you but I do suggest you get the turbo charger, probably the best little battery solution if you don't mind carrying a charger
Cant the camera be sorted out using a different camera app? I heard the camera app on the moto x is a bit pants. The camera and battery are the only 2 things holding me back right now. If i can get a full day at work out of the phone then i would be happy with the battery

The two phones are very similar, but completely different. Almost exactly same size, AMOLED screen, same processor. Samsung is touchwiz SAMSUNG environment (I have a SAMSUNG tablet) with every feature possible stuffed in someplace, but with the chance of lag. Motorola is Android, with some neat interaction features that you can load or disable. Moto X camera and screen are fine, but the Samsung screen and camera are a little better, Samsung has a microSD slot. Samsung has odd plastic materials that you throw in a case to cover. Motorola has ultra-premium build with custom materials that you don't want to cover. Do you want a super-loaded estate that can carry anything you need, but is not so much fun to drive or look at, or an ultra-light stripped-down sports car with premium finish? They will both get you to work.

From my reading about the Moto X 2014 camera; it pretty good. Only in low light situations is were it has trouble. Other then that; the pictures are " pretty close" to that of the iPhone 6 in quality.
I think you will like the new Moto X 2014. I just purchase a 32GB Yellow 5C and like it very much. But I going to get a new Moto X 2014 because I like the look too! Plus, I never had an Android phone before! With the $150 off; it makes buying the Moto X that much easier to do! After all; you only live once!(that I know of). LOL!

Yeah my problem is ive had 2 phones since the LG G3 was released. I had the G3 and got rid of it due to it shutting itself off (which happened to my gf's G3 too) and then got the S5 a couple months later. And my only real issues with the S5 are its plastic build, touchwiz (using nova though) and all the pre installed junk. Love nexus devices and really wanted the nexus 6 but that bad boys just far to big for my small hands lol.

We all have different needs and requirements from phones, but I will personally state the Moto X2 is the finest phone I've owned so far. I've never owned a contract carrer phone, but have owned the Moto X 2013, Nexus 5, Galaxy S III, and now the Nexus 6 but this phone beats all. Battery life has not been an issue for me - with moderate screen on time I'm getting 24hrs until a recharge is necessary.
Now's the time to make the switch if you can take advantage of the $140 discount being offered today until 5PM CST...
Thanks for the help everyone any more info on the battery and camera of the moto x would be welcome. If i k ew how to upload pics of my S5 battery usage i would ask for an idea of how long you think the moto x battery would last in comparison lol.
Oh and i think us guys in the uk may have less options in the moto maker compared to you guys across the pond. Dont quote me on that though. Just very hard to tell what the colours look like without a real world screen shot.

Got the models mixed up! Apple and Samsung! Yes, think you might like the Moto X 2014 better then the Samsung Galaxy S5 since Samsung customizes their launcher and the look of the back cover is sort of cheesy vinyl but that all up to you to make the call to switch! $150 off is the equalizer if however, you choice to do the switch! What a decision to make!
I've had the GS4 and this MotoX. I can tell you without a doubt, after using it,I would jump on the S5. The sd card, the display, the battery, and camera, its all superior. The sd card alone is worth the lag that touchwiz gives. That said, this is the fastest phone I've ever touched.

Take a look at the thread under general of photos of peoples phones. It will give you a good idea of what the combinations look like. 2 or 3 leather, 4 wood, and 10 or 12 colours with white of black front and 8 or 10 trim hi-lights.

Same processor, same RAM, same screen... though I find the S5 better. Worse battery life by far, worse camera, no SD card, no water proofing, no USB 3.0, no awful fingerprint reader. Then again, you gain a better build and some exterior features, along with the active screen and other software stuff. Don't know about you, but I don't spend much time looking at the back of my phone.
If you put your phone in a case, then there's no doubt you should stay with the S5 and invest when a real upgrade comes along. The Droid Turbo 64gb maybe, this I'd say no.
Anyone else got any opinions on selling my galaxy S5 to get a Moto X? Im really torn at the moment and really want the moto x for its beauty and vanilla android experiance but am still a little worried about battery life and the screen issues ive read about.

All I can say is that you'll love the Moto X. If you have the money, go for it. I had a Moto X for a week and returned it. Now, I'm already missing it a lot. I didn't return it because I didn't like it; I returned it because it is a pain in the ass for me to get the 32gb version and it was costly to import. So, now with the 100 euros discount, I'm definitely gonna order one through Moto Maker and get it delivered here through a mail forwaring service. I was going to get the Nexus 5 32gb instead because of the reasons I pointed earlier, but now it's a no brainer.
The software features and build quality of it are impressive.
At this point, I had never considered buying a Samsung phone. If you like yours, nothing against it, but from my experience in store, the build quality and Touch Wiz is like a repellent.

Understood.
If you do get the X, the options for wood or leather do make it special. Nobody else has that. Natural leather appears to be ageing poorly, but the dyed versions are holding up well.

[Q] Worth switching from a Moto X 2014?

Hi all,
I currently own a Moto X 2014 and I'm considering buying a Nexus 6. Does anyone who owns the Nexus 6 think it's worth the upgrade from the Moto X 2014? I know the Nexus 6 has better specs, but the devices look near enough identical apart from size obviously. I miss my fast Nexus updates which is the main thing pulling me towards the N6.
Had the X 2014 for about a month. Miss the development community of the nexus. If you can handle the size then its an all around better phone. No regrets since switching.
I have a N6 in my cart and a X 2014 in my hand. If moto suite were able to work on the N6 I would click on process order now. But I don't think I could live without it.
Thanks for the replies. The Moto suite doesn't bother me too much I could easily live without it. The size of the Nexus 6 is a bit of a concern but I'm sure I'd get used to it. I think I'll sit on this over the weekend before making a decision. I do miss the Nexus developer community.

Yes.
I had the 2014 Moto X and returned it for the Nexus 6. I too was concerned about the size of the Nexus but its really not that bad. I don't miss the Moto X at all. The fast updates and Dev community makes the Nexus a clear winner IMO.

The size is what made me leave nexus. I had nexus 4 then nexus 5. Now I am on HTC m8. Glad I didn't jump to nexus 6. I will wait for the next nexus;if there are any.

I had an M8 too, loved it. I only got rid of it because of the camera really. I'm almost certainly going to get the M9 or HIMA as it's being called.

I had the M8 too but it bothered me how tall it is and how the camera was worse than my M7. I ordered Moto X and it was almost $622 with leather back and I could not justify getting a bad camera and small battery for that price. I returned my Moto X 2014 (I've had 2) and jumped to Nexus 6. No regrets at all. It is every bit Motorola and Nexus. Miss the Moto Voice at times but that is the only thing I miss. Just my .02 cents.

Thanks. Yeah the M8 was a bit tall for me too. Isn't the camera in the Nexus 6 the same as the one in the Moto X 2014 apart from the ois?

They made M8 like iPhone and I dislike iPhone with a passion (trying to not use the hate word) lol
No, the camera module is completely different.
Moto X has an older version of Sony sensor (IMX135) that is 5 piece I believe and has f2.4. It's a pretty old sensor that I don't think anyone else is using but I may be wrong.
Nexus 6 has the same sensor (IMX214) as OnePlus One and a lot of other 2014 phones with 6 piece lens and f2.0 for wider aperture and better low light pics. OIS helps too of course. They need to work on their software but that's a whole different can of worms.
Motorola did something right with the X by going with Sony sensor but they picked a very old sensor that may have been laying around just like they did with the processor on 360. I have no complains about my 360 but I'm just making a point. I don't know why they do it but I am seeing a pattern here?

Thanks for the clarification. Do you think Lollipop will bring any software improvements to the Moto X? I'm close to pulling the trigger on a Nexus 6. I almost purchased a OnePlus in the week but decided I'd rather not go down that road. So, for me it's either stick with the Moto X until the M9 is released or get a Nexus 6. The only thing that slightly concerns me about the Nexus 6 is its size. However, I'm sure I'd adjust.

You're very welcome. Instead of saying thanks, better thing to do is hit the thanks/thumbs up that helps with other person's repo and gets the point across.
Anyways, I used the X with Lollipop and didn't see much difference. Don't get me wrong, it is not a bad camera and software is pretty decent but it is just not there yet. Being an old sensor, I think it has it's limitations on top of software. Go to a store like TMobile, ATT or Sprint and play with one before pulling the trigger. It feels just like X, just bigger IMHO.
I actually lioe the dimple and sides better on N6 since X is almost too skinny and slippery.

Haha, no worries man. I was just making sure you know. Feel free to ask any other questions you may have. I had both at one point and i picked N6 but YMMV. Just play with N6 and see if you like it. I know, I am not going back to X just because N6 is every bit X and some more IMHO. Be sure to play with one at a store first if you are concerned about the size.

Yeah, I'm going to go to the Vodafone store tomorrow here i the UK, they should have them in. If I like the size I'll definitely pull the trigger. I love Nexus devices ad the de community they have.

The size takes about a week to get used to. It also depends on what your previous phone was. To me, I started becoming comfortable after a day or two because the phone I had prior to this was 5.5.
Once you use it for a week, you won't want to go back and your view on phones will look different especially to phones that don't have wide screens

I did have a G3 earlier this year and I was happy with the size of that device, so the Nexus 6 should suit me. I really miss owning a Nexus phone and all the perks that come with it.
I've played with a Nexus 6 in store today and the size is fine. However, now I've got Lollipop on my Moto X 2014 I'm even more torn.
Maybe you should ask this same question in the moto x forum. Both sides of the fence...

Would you still buy the Turbo?

I'm honestly just curious as to how many of us would still buy the Turbo way back when if we knew Lollipop wouldn't be out until July and it wouldn't be getting the root we were all used to. I personally would have bought a Nexus 6 from the start seeing as I jumped ship to the Nexus a few days ago and I'm currently loving it and looking to sell my Turbo.
Honestly I would not have. Don't get me wrong I like the turbo, but I think if I had known it would take this long to get lollipop, I would have waited to get a verizon nexus 6/bought an unlocked one before it officially came out.

I just bought a turbo last week. I was using a Nexus 5 but mainly switched because of the battery life. I was very underwhelmed by lollipop on my Nexus 5, it made the battery life even worse so I ended up downgrading my Nexus to 4.4.4 SlimKat because I would get close to 50% more battery life that way. I don't get the hype lollipop gets on Turbo forums, maybe its just a grass is greener situation. And hey, maybe it will be amazing on the Turbo but I kind of doubt it.

For me, going to the Nexus wasn't just about Lollipop. I love the unlocked bootloader and easy (and free!) root. Although I must say I really do prefer Lollipop to KitKat.

This as well. Prior to purchasing the turbo, I had a CM12 rom running on my bootloader unlocked Moto X 2013, and I loved it, but I wanted something a little more powerful. It surprises me how much smoother lollipop is on that old hardware than kitkat is on the monster that is the droid turbo. This is the main reason I can't wait for lollipop to be released for the turbo.

Agreed, Lollipop on the Nexus 6 feels much faster than KK on the Turbo. It'll probably be pretty great on the Turbo, ridiculously fast. I'm still keeping the Nexus though I do love the extra screen.

I know part of my problem just was the fact my Nexus 5 was on Sprint. But once I loaded lollipop I started having issues with MMS and calling dropping, which downgrading to 4.4.4 didn't really fix. I used to be big on messing with my phone, which is part of the reason I got the Nexus 5 to begin with, but lately I haven't done much like that anymore so the locked bootloader doesn't bother me so much anymore. I've turned into more of a battery freak and having to carry a battery charger in my pocket along with my Nexus was getting old.
Honestly though I am very surprised carriers haven't started selling an unlocked bootloader and rooted version of their flagship phones and just charging more for them.
I don't get all the people saying lollipop made their battery worse or made their device lag horribly - every device I have ran lollipop on has been better battery and smooth as butter. Don't know what I'm doing different.
But to the topic - no - if I had known how long I would have to wait and that the only stable root would be a crippled half root that requires a PC and paying more than my monthly water bill just to get - I would never have touched the turbo.
No, but not because of lollipop. Right after I bought my Turbo, Verizon released the Nexus 6. I would have much rather had the Nexus. I do love my Turbo though. Especially now that I've rooted it.

Yes, it is still the most "complete" 5~ inch cell phone on the market, for my purposes. I don't use the camera very much. Otherwise, it's fast, robust, and has stamina to get me through a work day or more. The only thing that would make it better, for me, would be a 5 inch screen without buttons, and the same battery. Basically, a Moto X with a bigger battery and more power. In less than a week, I expect it to be running Lollipop. But, frankly, Lollipop is not feature rich enough to make a huge difference in actual use.
At this point I would prefer to have the G4 mainly because the specs are about the same and the aftermarket support for the device is much greater than ours. Even if we got the bootloader unlocked right now, there would be a limited number of developers for our phone because it doesn't have as much of a userbase.
If the "I love that 3900mAh battery" portion was not there, I would have chosen the reconsideration one.
Just bought a Turbo for my wife over the weekend. She's the last person to care about which OS version a phone runs on but will benefit from the great battery life and moto features.
I would still buy it. It is stable for me, and has great battery life.
Am looking forward to Lollipop, but that isn't a big deal to me. I have it on 4 other devices, and simply don't see what the fuss/excitement is about.
Also wish it had a better camera, but it is good enough.

Another reason I bought the Nexus.. There's so many more options to play with and ROMs to try out.
I would not have gotten it. Wish I had waited for the nexus 6. I like the extra screen space. I could live with a smaller battery.

If youre willing to wait a little, spend some time hunting around on Craigslist, eBay, or Swappa. I got a Nexus for a ridiculously good price by waiting for a great deal to pop up.

Had the N6 BE AVAILABLE ON VZW I WOULD HAVE GONE WITH THAT OVER MY TURBO.. LOVE THE TURBO BUT ITS JUST BEEN A HEADACHE IN TERMS OF THE LOLLIPOP UPDATE IT SHOULD HAVE CAME WITH..SMH.. WAY TO FUMBLE VZW
I didn't buy and i wouldn't buy it today just because of the bootloader lock and verizon bloatware inside it.
Best phone I have ever owned, love all the features, performance, and battery. I would defiantly buy this phone again. Even had I known it would STILL not have an unlocked bootloader, it's just so damn good I can look past that.
