Hello all,
I recently bought my wife and I new phones. I chose the US version of the 2nd Gen Moto G. This is model XT1064. We plan to use Consumer Cellular as it's cheaper than T-Mobile, but has all the features we need. Should I have bought the Global XT1063 model instead since Consumer Cellular uses AT&T's network? Obviously these are not LTE phones.

US model has Tmobile and ATT bands. Global model has ATT bands and 2G tmobile bands, (unless you are in a refarmed area)
if you are in ATT either one is good, dont be like me i bough the Globan and i was on ATT... had to change company(it was easier than returning the phone and getting the US one)

Ok, thank you for the reply. I seem to be missing something though. Why did you have to switch away from ATT if the global model is supposed to work with it?
We got the phones yesterday, and our SIM cards will be here today (wed). They shipped out of China on Friday and got here Tuesday, amazing. Compared to my droid HTC Incredible 1, this phones is big. I have them charged up, but haven't done anything with them yet. Our 32GB flash cards should be here today as well. I can't wait to see how well these phones work and what kind of signal we get in our home. Even if I have to go outside to make a call, I don't care. I'm just glad to be rid of the $160/month Verizon bill. It was an unlimited data plan, but we just don't use that much. 2.5GB shared should be plenty for us. If not, we'll switch to T-Mobile. Either way, it will still be a ton cheaper than what we were paying. I hope this phone holds up as good as the Incredibles did. I guess I'm officially old now since I'm switching to CC.

Ok, I understand. Any reason you chose Cricket over Consumer Cellular? Is it because you use a lot of data? Cricket looks to be the best deal if you want a lot of data and only one line. I can't tell, but if you have two lines do you "share" the data allowance, or is it for each phone like t-mobile does. CC shares the data allowance and talk/text limits across all the phones so each additional line is only $10. If we start using a lot of data, we may switch to t-mobile or cricket, whatever is the cheapest to use for us. Right now we use less than 1GB/month between us, usually less than 500MB total per month. We don't text either or talk very much on the phone.

where i live there was a promotion where you got 100 dollar credit when switching to cricket lol so i got the 35 dollar plan (15 dollar more than what i paid with tmobile) and i got 3 months paid, my family was on cricket already i was the only one that moved out but since it was bought by ATT i needed to see what was new on cricket, and i gotta say its good c: unlimited everything for 35 dollars

Cricket looks to be a lot cheaper than T-Mobile around here. CC is the cheapest provider that I could find, but they nail you for overages. They now support LTE phones which is fairly new I think. They don't have any "unlimited" plans and you have to share your data/talk/text with everyone on the plan. They don't charge you anything for the SIM card though. Verizon seems to be the most expensive guys out there for family or single lines. Their coverage was good though.

As mentioned with T-Mobile YMMV depending on where your at, I use the Global Moto G 2014 for my business phone hooked up to T-Mobile and with my travels around I've been getting a good 8-10mbps upload and 2-3mpbs download speed with my phone usually being on H+ and in weaker areas 3G with Edge (2G) only rarely popping up when I'm deep in a data center or in the middle of a big concrete building.

Following up, man what an ordeal to get the data working. CC even sells this model of the phone now, and I could have bought from them for $30 less per phone ($150). Oh well, live and learn. I don't know if they are selling the US or the Global model though.
Didn't have any trouble getting the numbers transferred or getting the voice service to work. Even though data was "enabled" online in the account settings, the phones weren't connecting to the mobile data service. I didn't notice until I left the house for the day.
They are really nice and try to help, but first level support is lacking in technical expertise. They couldn't remotely configure it so I had to wait for second level help to save the day, more or less. They gave me some APN settings that got it limping along at about 512Kbps (yes that's bits per second) even though the phone showed H+ in the display. After spending a couple hours on google reading about APN settings, I was able to make some "adjustments" and get it moving at around 4Mbps down and about 300Kbps up. Certainly not LTE speeds, but usable nonetheless. I have no idea if MMS (whatever that is exactly) works or not, but the web is working now.
I really like the phone. It's way way faster than the Droid Incredible 1 that we had been using for the last 4 years. At 1/3 the cost per month, I can live with the data speeds.
EDIT: I just ran a speed test in good signal area and I'm getting 7.5Mbps down and 1.5Mbps up. I can definitely live with that. Not bad for H+ considering that most LTE users I know are getting pretty much the same here in Houston.

I've been using the Moto G 2014 (XT-1063) with Consumer Cellular for about a month now and am very pleased with it. I think you will be quite happy. We have the 2 gig data plan (shared) and have no problem staying under the limit. We live in a rural area and the download/upload speeds are very good. The overall performance of this phone is fantastic. My wife has a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and this phone out performs it.
I found the APN settings for Consumer Cellular online two years ago, when I got my first smart phone (a Huaweii 8800), so it was just a matter of copying them over to my new phone. But I do know from experience that when you call their customer service, it is iffy as to whether you get a rep who knows the answer to your question.
MMS (Multimedia Message Service) deals with photos, video and audio that you include in a text message, as opposed to SMS (Short Message Service) which is text only. If you want to test its functionality, send somebody a text with a photo attached.
FYI - the model Moto G that Consumer Cellular sells is the first generation model, thus the lower price.

Ok, so you have the Global model then. Can you tell me what your APN settings are? I found that by clearing the first Proxy and Port fields, that my speed increased drastically along with response time.
FYI - CC actually sells the 2014 as a Moto G EXT, they just listed it this week. The 2013 sells for $100 and the 2014 goes for $150, no kidding. I wish I'd have waited a week before buying phones directly from Motorola. I could have saved $29 per phone by buying them from CC. I'd like to know what model CC is selling though, XT1063 or XT1064. I'm still wondering if I should have bought the XT-1063 instead since T-Mobile has already upgraded (refarmed?) their stuff in houston.
So far, I'm very happy with the Moto G 2014. It's a little big compared to my old phone, but I'm getting used to that. It still fits in my pocket. I wish it had a metal back instead of plastic, but it still looks and feels like a well made phone. Can't beat that Gorilla Glass for durability. My 4 year old HTC Droid Incredible still looks like brand new. I'm going to put a new battery in it and give it to my kid. I don't think it will work with CC since it's a CDMA phone, but Straight Talk says it will work with their service. It doesn't use a SIM card either. The HTC Droid Incredible was a fairly high end phone back when it was new. It even has an 8Mpixel camera in it.

Wow! That is interesting about CC selling the 2nd Gen now. I looked at their offerings before I bought my phone and they didn't have it yet thus I went with one from Amazon. No regrets though as I was ready to upgrade and I got a month's usage out of it before they offered it. My old phone was just too obsolete. The newest version of Android I could find in the custom ROM's was 2.3.8. There were several apps I wanted to use that are not compatible with it. CC is doing much better at staying up on more current phones. They now offer the iPhone 6 as well. We've been with them for four years and this year has been a dramatic difference with their offerings.
My APN settings are as follows :
Name - Consumer Cellular
APN - att.mvno
Proxy - Not Set
Port - Not Set
Username - Not Set

Server - http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMSC - http://mmsc.cingular.com

Yeah, I kinda wish I would have waited a week and gotten my phones from CC since they're so much cheaper through them. The savings would have paid for the 32MB SD card and a protector.
My settings are pretty much the same except that I have:
APN type - default,mms,supl,agps,fota
MVNO type - none and the MVNO value is greyed out
I've tried hipri, but it didn't seem to help at all. It's my understanding that fota allows for OTA updating. I guess agps tells the phone that it can get supplemental position information from the network, but I'm just guessing on that.
If I set MVNO type to GID, my specially named APN profile vanishes and I can't select it from the previous screen. I also see one named AT&T PHONE with an APN value of phone. I don't know what that one is for, but I do know it doesn't work if I select it.
My speeds are all over the place. I guess it's due to congestion. I can pick the same server that gave me 7.5Mbps and it gives me about 2Mbps from my home even with 4 bars of strength. I get the best speeds when I'm away from home for some reason. Well, except when WiFi is turned on then I get about 52Mbps down and 12Mbps up.

Now that I know my Droid 3 will work, I tested it with a ATT gophone SIM after doing the radio flash and such but now I'm trying to get real service with a dataplan and it is hell.
They say I need a certain sim card (W7 sim card) and they seem to think it is a micro sim which the droid 3 doesn't have that. the phone support told me they could not mail me this type of card and the store people can't seem to bring up my information from the phone order and keep saying I need something else.
Keep getting the 'its not going to work' thing but obviously it will.
Did any one else in the states run into this trying to get your D3 on ATT with service other than gophone service? Trying get a 550 sharte plan and 3gb data plans for 2 phones, both are Droid 3s

You can buy sim adapters fairly cheap, if they sent you a micro sim, grab an adapter on ebay for a few bucks (usually comes in 3 packs for micro mini, and standard). Don't ask any customer service/corporate if it'll work, as by 'stock' the D3 does NOT support ATT (the mnc block Verizon has in the radio prevents this).
I have Straight Talk's BYOP service using AT&T's network on my Droid 3 and it works just fine (albeit hating ST ). If you want a go-phone plan, your cheapest option would be grabbing an ATT SIM from ebay (I bought one for a penny, trolol free shipping), and activated it on gophone awhile back when I was just first testing the radio swap, worked great, but I never tried doing much beyond a 10 dollar card for talk/text while away.
If you're trying to get on a contract, etc etc, I'd suggest you just don't tell them you have a verizon droid 3, tell them you just have an unlocked GSM phone, and if they bug you about it, tell them it's an XT860 4g or an XT883.
EDIT: You can also try just buying a SIM on ebay (make sure to get the newer orange ones) and just activating that on your AT&T account.
I had a free or discounted feature phone / dumb phone with them, with the 2 year contract, and I've used that SIM in subsequent phones with no problem... the SIM had 3G branding. Currently that same SIM and same account are working fine in my XT860 from Bell Canada (unlocked).
If you don't mind a contract, go with the simplest 3G feature phone you can get from them, and add Media.net Unlimited if they still offer it. Sell the feature phone or keep it as a backup.
I ran into the problem also with them saying I can't transfer my line because I now live in a different state. So I was give nthe option to go and sign up in that state OR send the sims to someone in that state....
what a pain. I never thought it was would be so difficult. If I'm going to get into a contract, I'll just get a new phone, I just fear that even though it seems to work with the ATT gophone SIM that once I pop a normal SIM in there, it won't work and I'll be switching to a contract and paying the 'upgrade' charge (which is really jut anoher way to make you pay the activation again)
That was my main fear.
I'm hoping they will let me just test a sim from another device at the store. I was going to show up with our phones radio flashed and ready to go for GSM and then see what they will do for me. I hope they;ll let me test it some how and/or let me sign up month to month and if it doesn't work, let me switch to contract and wave the upgrade BS.
thats the only thing I'm unsure of if I reflash to the GSM radio, take out my verizon SIM and show up with no sim. new build prop and it set to GSM before I show up if it will work or not.

Welcome to the world of AT&T! Where they win worst in customer satisfaction 3 years running by consumer reports.
"Each year, Consumer Reports ranks all manner of U.S. wireless carriers based on customer satisfaction in a number of different categories. AT&T ranked dead last in the customer satisfaction survey for the third year in a row. It was hit with the worst rankings for any major carrier in value, voice quality, and customer support."
I'd suggest you go with a prepaid like Page Plus. I've used them, good flexible plans, friendly customer support, free ESN changes via online chat, no bull. Any Verizon phone outside of 'new' inpulse and blackberries can be activated (I've got Page Plus on my CDMA side and a *shudder* Straight Talk AT&T SIM on GSM in my Droid 3)
If you call customer service, you can usually get it activated for free, or find a 3rd party page plus dealer (I have a couple that do free instant activations). They're an MVNO of Verizon, so same network, but very much lower price. Verizon prepaid smartphone plan; 70USD for unlim talk/text and 1GB data. PagePlus? 55USD For unlim talk/text and 2GBs data, or 69.95 for 5GB of data, and buying online, no taxes either.
Anyway, luck to you. If you decide to go in-store, make sure your phone is completely GSM ready, leave the Verizon/Vodafone sim at home. Tell them it's GSM unlocked and it works on AT&T's network (mention you tested it, or let you test a SIM. I've *yet* to find a store that lets me test a sim though.)
The Droid 3 supports up to HSPA 14.4 on AT&T's network, I can get ~5.5Mbps, but I have noticed it's not as stable as Verizon, and calls drop, due to CDMA having better hand-off than GSM (CDMA actually connects to multiple towers at once for seamless handoff, GSM has to toss between the towers). Been awhile since I've really read into it, and I'm likely getting a bit technical...
for me, I can't even use verizon at home or anywhere with in a 30 mile+ radius. The ONLY carrier that has coverage out here is ATT and oddly, they have 4g coverage. My neighbors use them and the signal strength and data speeds are superb. There isn't another carrier.
I know straight talk and such might use ATT towers but I worry about the so called unlimited data and everything that really isn't unlimited.
I guess if one of those carrier actually use ATT towers then I guess I'm ok but how would I know without trying them out some how?
looks like straight talk no longer does ATT
net10 seems like you can still get ATT sims
I'm in WV and, again, ATT is the only provider that has voice and data coverage out here.

Net10 at least came out and said there was a 1.5gb cap now on att. Albeit net10 and straighttalk are the exact same company. Outside of that, most any mvno of att is expensive, att itself is expensive, but you gotta use what you have to. Any that run on att will work on the d3 once modified to do so. Net10 and Red Pocket are the only two that come to mind at the moment, but do a bit of research and find a good one that fits your needs.
I have to search for a list since I'm reading now that some services like Net10 and such may use the ATT gohpone service area or they may use the normal service areas.
Can anyone confirm if Calls, SMS, MMS, and full Data and 3G coverage all work correctly on AT&T on the Droid 3 once unlocked?
think I'm going to try net10. $85 bucks a month to use the postpaid ATT network for 2 lines is alot better than 120 going with ATT and we don't use a lot of data. Looking back at our Verizon account over 6 months, we've never used even 1gb worth of data in a month. I can't find a chart or anything that shows which ones use the postpaid ATT network as I am up for other carriers other than net10 if they do.
seems like moving my number might be an issue though since I am no longer in PA.

I have a Bell Canada XT860, unlocked, and I use all of those except MMS, which I'm pretty sure would work too... I have the APN settings for it.
I am using a Droid 3 on At&t with the Medianet plan that only costs $10(if you're on an unlimited text plan).I'm getting speeds of
up to 5.5mb down and 1.5mb up. The speeds are better at night though.
If you want to use a prepaid GSM,the cheapest I've seen is Red Pockect that uses AT&T's network. They have unlimited talk, text &MMS.

i have an xt862 that i flashed with the chinese radio. I love it honestly, especially since I can have a decent android phone with keyboard + a cheap data plan.
id love to see ICS on the droid 3 but i know it wont happen, the phone is going on 2 years into its lifespan and that kind of age means DEATH in the phone industry .

Oh yeah, that's my goal here in looking for a replacement for my Milestone 1. I just know that I won't be able to take full advantage of the device without the newer Android OS versions available, and that's too bad because everything else is perfect with this phone. So I'm basically sticking w/ the Milestone 1 on CM7 until something better becomes available. (Weird part is even my Milestone 1 can run JB 4.1 100%...!)
I honestly have no phone to get that meets my upgrade specifications for AT&T (JB, keyboard, global phone), aside from attempting the PhotonQ SIM Card Mod, which is a huge risk since I don't know if it will work on AT&T. Blah.

LOL I have spent some time thinking about the Photon Q,you can buy one with a bad ESN for around $120... but I am not that handy and taking apart the phone kind of scares me.
I'd be happy with a Photon Q for a while tho.

Wow, that's so tempting. Didn't realize they would be that cheap.
It could be a fun project, as long as I don't screw it up completely....but I also would feel bad about owning a device which was most likely stolen.

Well "bad ESN" doesnt always mean stolen, could also mean the person owes money and the phone is blacklisted till they pay it.
My Droid 3 had a bad ESN but it was because I lost my job and couldn't afford to pay Verizon's ridiculous prices. My income was literally cut in half.
I am currently out of contract with Verizon and am debating whether or not I should switch carriers. I was originally with a single line, 2GB paying roughly $55.00/mo with my VZW Note 3. Now that I am married, and have to take care of my mother, I need to change to a family plan (mother uses very little to no data). I'd much rather outright purchase the Note 4 and am debating between the following: VZW/TMo/AT&T.
-I like the fact that I can swap out SIM cards if I were to travel abroad, (not all that often mind you, but nice to have).
-I like the fact knowing I won't have issues running into data caps/limits, (2GB I REALLY had to limit my use to only WiFi for the most part).
-I would like a reasonable family plan that would allow more than 2GB/line, (I'd have to get 3 lines regardless whether on single lines or family with either of the providers listed).
-I like the fact that the device has multiple antennas should I want to swap my provider after buying the phone.
-I like the fact that there will be strong support in the rooting community.
With that said, VZW/AT&T have the strongest signal/service quality in my area with TMo coming in 2-3rd place in some categories. I suppose my question is, what do you guys feel would be suit me? I know with the VZW Note 3 you could pop in a GSM SIM and change out APN's to allow usage on, say, tmobile and thus was a great version to buy.
What do you guys think? Any input would be great!
I have cricket which are owned by att and use their signal. 3 lines with unlimited talk text and 3gb data for each line (throttled to edge after 3gb) is 120 (no taxes or fees charged its already included). If someone doesn't use much data drop that line to 1gb to save 10 bucks bringing it to $110.

This is what your monthly would be on T-Mobile for the exact same plan (if you plan on purchasing the device outright) FWIW.

I know of T-Mobiles pricing and tried them but signal here is horrendous. Dealbreaker
Well I would say t-mobile of you don't mind the reception in your area, and if got are going to root since the bootloader should not be locked down like att and vzw. If you don't mind that the bootloader might be locked then I would say go with att since now they have a promo with their shared plans... You get double the data. The promo ends Oct 31. The promo starts with their 15gb plans and up. So you would get 30gb for the price of the 15gb and so forth... Hope this helps...
Sent from my Note3 Rocking DynamicKat or my G3
I would say T-Mobile and just get one of the new cellspot routers for voice over WiFi. I got one of the cellspot routers, the range on the WiFi is really nice. With my old Netgear wndr4300, I would barely get 2.4ghz signal upstairs, and 5ghz wouldn't connect most of the time. With the T-Mobile (rebranded Asus) router, I am able to have almost full 5ghz signal all over my house and even reaches halfway across my yard.
I have been on ATT in the Chicago burbs for a few years now, been happy and satisfied with their service, no issues, and we have a good plan = 2 lines Unlimited minutes Unlimited texts, and 10GB shared Data for $130/Month. And with me on next it is $155/Month.
But I always like to at least root my Wife's phone for AdAway and XPosed stuff to tweak her phones better, and me I always root, and install Custom Recovery and ROM my phones, right now on a HTC One M8 converted to GPE and love this phone.
My point is, ATT has gotten worse and worse the last 18 months with locking down their phones, even root can take months to come by on flagship phones. And on principle it is really pissing me off, why give ATT money, if they won't even let me customize my phone anymore ? The ATT Note 2 I had two years ago, was the last best ATT phone IMO, I rooted it and ROM'd the heck out of that phone, but sadly with the new Note 4 those days are long gone and history with ATT.
Long story short, does T-Mobile offer competitive plans to what i currently have ? And how is their service in Chicago area ? Thank you
Well, you have two choices based on what you're interested in:
1. Switch service to T-Mobile. I also live in Chicago. The service isn't as good as AT&T here in the city, or elsewhere. LTE/3G data doesn't penetrate buildings as well. The calling and texting seems to be about the same when towers are near, but I know for a fact that AT&T has them beat in terms of coverage outside of major metro areas. I frequently drive between Chicago and Indianapolis- AT&T has 4G or LTE about 85% of the drive, while T-mobile will barely get phone calls to go through, much less high speed data. T-Mobile is cheaper service than AT&T, but you're getting what you pay for.
2. Buy the T-Mobile Note 4 off-contract and unlock it for AT&T. There are lots of threads here on xda about this- and it's what I've just done with my T-Mo note 4! I had done the same with my Note 3, there are presently no issues with t-mobile samsungs and at&T. connecting to LTE, phone calls, mms, sms, etc all works perfectly.
As you said, the AT&T variants are locked down and will probably remain that way. The ONLY note 4 you can buy that has the unlocked bootloader AS WELL AS support for LTE networks in the United States is the T-mobile Note 4. How much of a premium are you willing to pay for having the unlocked bootloader, is what you need to ask yourself. An off contract Note 4 from T-mobile costs $850 after Illinois taxes, and you'll need to activate the line for at least one day, meaning a few more bucks.
Hope that helps. I would go with option #2, especially if you're like me- grandfathered unlimited data from at&t.
obviously, the cost of the note 4's from t-mobile will decrease after the product is widely available and the initial hype dies down. So if you're enjoying your M8, wait a few months and grab a note 4 from swappa.com, ebay, or craigslist
Good points thanks.
I would almost like to test drive T-Mobile first for like a week, see how it is around town and in my office, etc... I am happy with ATT the past couple years, good service, it's just the principle of them locking down phones really irks me, and makes me want to take business elsewhere.
hey man, nice to see you here
I dont know about that other dude, but my service in the burr ridge/willowbrook area is fantastic with T-mobile
Also, I travel through lombard/villa park/elmhurst alot, and always have super strong signal, and in 8 months, I dont think I have dropped a single call; 4g speeds usually between 15-35 down, and 6-15 up, so I am one happy camper with Tmobile in chicagoland..
Do the test drive if you want confirmation yourself..

Hello neighbor
I work in Willowbrook, and most of my business is in the western burbs, so thanks for your input.
And the principle of the idea is pushing me away from ATT, the whole lockdown is so upsetting.
How quick is a port of our numbers from ATT to T-Mobile, if I pick up the Note 4 ?
If I recall, when I switched, the number porting was done by the time we left the store!
just bring in your old ATT bill, and make sure you know the password on your ATT account, and the porting should be really fast..
I am in IL, but downstate and live in the Metro St. Louis area. The comments about T-Mo coverage are spot on. If you are downtown, or within about a 10-15 mile radius of it, you should be good. I was a long time Verizon customer, and I jumped to T-Mo when VZW pissed me off with that "network optimization" nonsense.
My experience at the office with T-Mo has been great. Faster even that Verizon. At home (30 miles NE of downtown STL) it is a different story. Maybe 1 bar of HSPA (never LTE) inside my house. I don't travel much, so I can't comment there yet, but I will say that if you spend a lot of time on the road you probably are best off buying the T-Mo Note 4 and staying with AT&T.
I really like what T-Mo is trying to do, they just have to get more towers out there.
Porting the number takes less than 30 seconds flat... It is incredibly fast. (done it already with 2 lines from AT&T to T-Mobile) Now I have 3 lines in total with T-Mobile, (an old one plus 2 new ones coming from AT&T)

I had the asus RT-AC87, but returned it, because I got the same wifi speeds from the T-Mobile router, as I did from the $300 RT87..
How did you get tmo to give you an Asus router? I just switched from att to tmo here in jersey and my reason was for cheaper prices. I'm still within my 14 days but I will say I'm impressed so far. Greats LTE speeds, no issues with calls. I have derive at work & home so I think I'll be staying. I'm on the note 3 now waiting for n4 pre-order.

So can you confirm the t mobile note 4 works fine with 4g lte on att? How did you unlock it? I current have the att note 3 on contract so would be paying out of contract prices and it seems to make more sense to go with t mobile if I want to customize it at some point or switch to t mobile later on. Also the t mobile note 4 is cheaper out of contract than att. If you are currently using the t mobile note 4 on att and everything works that's the route I'm going to go too. Just waiting for someone to verify that works as there are some threads with people having issues when going this route with the note 3. I've also heard if att ever asks for your imei or other phone info you should give them the numbers from an older att phone so they don't blacklist you and block you from using lte.

correct about the imei. phone's working fine for me. speed tests are great, no issues with any LTE coverage. Maybe a little better than my previous phone- the T-mo Note 3 unlocked on AT&T.
I found a seller on eBay who got me the code. There's a thread in the questions/problems section that discusses my guys and all the other sellers.
I'm seriously thinking about dumping Verizon for T-Mobile with the 2 lines for $100 for unlimited everything. I want to get rid of Comcast and use T-Mobile as my internet connection for my home use also. The question that I have is can root bypass the 5gb hotspot connection so I can use the hot spot for more data?
Yes ... you can even do it without root by adding dun to your APN type in settings.
That is a bit of tricky question as we truly (or at least I haven't seen a definitive answer) don't know as how T-Mobile determines if someone is using their hotspot beyond whatever software might be installed on a branded handset which alerts T-Mobile to the use of the feature.
If T-Mobile can determine that you are using your hotspot feature regardless of whatever you do on your handset (like bypassing) than it wouldn't make a difference what you do.
I have seen multiple conflicting reports over the years and there doesn't seem to be anything close to a consensus.
Dan
I left Verizon for T-Mobile last month for the same deal. I was grandfathered into unlimited data for Verizon and 700 minutes, but no text. My wife texts like crazy so I was paying way more than I should have each month. Regardless, $100 for us both with unlimited everything was the catch. Texts for her, data for me. I tether a lot in my job, and I've been known to download heavy files from time-to-time. So far, T-Mobile has been great. Data speeds are a bit slower, but coverage where I am most of the time is just as good or even a bit better than Verizon.
The problem was the phone. I couldn't use my old Verizon Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile (well, I could, just HSPA+ instead of LTE). I got an unlocked Nexus 5 that worked great. Earpiece was busted, I swapped it, still didn't work, sold it and got a Moto X 2014 Pure Edition instead. So far, so good. Tethering works once rooted. I've not come close to the usually 2-3GB of tethering that I do each month. But no warnings or caps or throttle as best I can tell.
All I can say, keep away from the branded phones. Go and get a Google Play edition phone. You'll be thankful you did. My wife's T-Mobile branded LG G2 is great for her, but it drives me nuts. I had one too (before the Google Play Edition Nexus 5) for like 2 days before I sold it.
Although I have been a very satisfied T-Mobile customer for the last 7 years, it appears and tech support confirms that the tower that I connect to at home is oversold and instead of the 16 to 20 megs down that I used to get, I am now getting 1.5 meg on a good day and it goes down to .3 meg on bad days. I can't live with that as I have little other access to Internet bandwidth in my neighborhood and it gets worse every week. I use the Internet for business. The only fix appears to be another tower. Not a quick fix.
So, If I make the switch, what happens? Although it may work out better in switching if I give Sprint my existing Nexus 6, I will be using a Nexus 6 with them. I read comments that I will lose simultaneous voice and data use because of their Spark network. Is that true? What LTE speeds should I expect? I also understand that I will lose tethering if I opt for the unlimited plan (I am actually leaning toward the 20 GB family plan which I understand that I can share with my data enabled devices.) I don't read any nice things about Sprint.
Any thoughts you can share would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.
Dont do it bro, sprint is horrible. Tell me if you find 25 people you know that love sprint more than T-Mobile. Sprint is a rotting company hiding behind sales gimmicks and ideas from T-Mobile. T-Mobile is still rolling out this year with Band 12 700Mhz and its LTE footprint roll out replacing old edge areas. More people complain about sprint way more than T-Mobile. So if you dont like T-Mobile, you might as well get shartrizon or AT$$$T. I would recommend calling T-Mobile to send a tech. to your area to fix the issue or report it for fixing.

Is Cricket Wireless an option? They are essentially AT&T with throttled LTE speeds of 8Mpbs down, no throttle up. I am paying $55/month for 20GB of LTE data. They no longer offer that plan, but have the same plan at 10GB of data.

See, that is my feeling as well. I can't find anyone that has nice things to say. As to AT&T or Verizon, wow does the cost jump. And to the point about getting a tech out there, been there, done that. T-Mobile is very aware of the problem. They have bee running tests for a while. Sadly, it is oversold. Not broken. Don't have too many options. There were some numbers from Verizon that weren't horrible, but I don't think Verizon pays ETFs.

I have looked at Cricket. The problem is that I do exceed 10 GB in some months and there is no provision for tethering or tablets that I could see. One of those options would be necessary.

I had verizon wireless for 10 years and left them over a year ago for T-Mobile. I didn't regret anything. I didn't switch because of price because I could afford verizon, but their plans and phones suck and they are scam artists trying to rape every penny from you just like John Legere quoted. In my area and even in rural places in georgia I get pretty decent excellent coverage and service. At home I usually get from 80-112mbps down and 7-15mbps up. Verizon couldn't match that and hell, everyone I know that has sprint hate it and are jumping to T-Mobile because they get less than 1mbps and call quality sounds like pure ****. T-Mobile has nationwide VoLTE and WiFi calling and texting and the "Uncarrier" exclusives. I have unlimited data so I use it as my home internet since I have root for tethering unlimited data and its way faster than charters fastest speeds they deliver to my house lol. Sprint is also bad just like verizon because remember they are money hungry companies and they will lock u in contracts and can only use their cdma devices or select unlocked devices like the nexus 6. I heard verizon doesn't recognize the unlocked nexus 6, idk if that is true or not.
Link? And what about tablets or tethering? I need that data sometimes when I am out in the field and I have to remote into something. Yes, even my 6 inch screen is a little small. I don't see any plans for tablets.

Although tethering is not supported, it does work.
There also would be no issue popping in a Cricket SIM in a Nexus 9. I've considered selling my WiFi N9 and getting a LTE N9 with a 20GB Cricket SIM.

There is an app on the playstore if you have root called "WiFi Tether Router" which will work or if you want unlimited native tethering.
#1 in SQL lite go to /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/settings.db/global
#2 add " tether_dun required " and set the value to 0
#3 in your APN settings add " dun " to APN type and set your APN to IPv4 only since IPv6 doesnt support this.
Either use OpenSignal app or their site and zoom in on your neighborhood. They have a list of carriers with their average upload and download speed.
Personally I wouldn't use Sprint as OpenSignal and Rootmetrics has shown it is the slowest network across the country.
Get a AT&T GoPhone sim and try them out for a month. Walmart sells the sims. They now have rollover data on prepaid just like T-mobile. Plus they're not throttled like Cricket.
I wait for Callingmart to announce their monthly 10% off GoPhone refills on Twitter. Then refill each month saving me $6.
Just my 2ยข but I have been with Sprint for going on 8 years. Their service is great in my area (now) and their customer service has always been outstanding. While I do agree that they don't have the best coverage, they have come a long way in my time with them. You can get unlimited, TRULY unlimited data with them for a good price. They offer payment plans on the top devices and as I said, customer service has bent over backwards for me more than once. Choice is yours, OP, just do your homework and choose wisely.
I have no complaints with Sprint. They recently upgraded my area to LTE and its fast. Its really pointless to ask random people on the internet because they more than likely do not live in your state much less your city. Signal strength is the most important aspect of cell phone service and you wont find that answer here. I would find a coverage map and compare the carriers, make sure it is a legitimate coverage map and not advertising. I would also ask people in your area with Sprint so you can compare.

To each his own. I have learned a lot from this, coverage map aside (I am in a Spark enabled area of moderate strength, the same as I am for T-Mobile and for that matter, likely AT&T, which tells me little that I didn't already know. It is a topology issue.) My question wasn't about coverage. It was about the experience. I have learned that, unlike T-Mobile, Sprint customer service is out of country, but some have had good experiences with the company. I have also received useful suggestions about alternatives. This has been very useful to me. Sprint could have the strongest signal in my area and still be a company to avoid like the plague.

Good point. Hadn't thought about those. Thanks.
This morning my Speed Tests were decidedly better. At least 8 and as high as 12 meg. I haven't seen those numbers in months. So, (holding breath), perhaps my last call got something changed. I won't make changes unless I am sure there is no hope for change.

Other than calling to activate new phones, I have only had to call once in all my years with Sprint and I have no complaints on it. I don't generally need service, I pay my bill and use my phone lol. As far as overseas call centers, that's not entirely true; there is a Sprint call center in my city (along with a T-Mobile call center). To each their own.
I switched from Sprint to Verizon as my family plan 4 years ago, best decision of my life. Sprint will frustrate you beyond belief with their slow data, you won't even be able to load Google. I know you said the big 2 cost too much, so I'd stay with T-Mobile if I were you, avoid Sprint at all costs. I personally love Verizon, have 5 off contract smartphones with them, 15GB shared data, and pay $153+tax a month.
