No IMEI - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
my Moto X is currently not showing SIM, Baseband Version, Bluetooth Version and IMEI. Up until now i thought, that its an issue with the modem, but i figured out, that i somehow "destroyed" the EFS Partition. Does someone know of any way to reset that to default or fix it?

Not sure if this will work with the X, but it worked 9 times out of 10 with the N5- try wiping your cache in TWRP.
How did this happen?

While the phone and root cause are different, you might find some useful information in this thread > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2657519

No Service

I just updated my ROM I was using MIUI 2.9 (I think) and I just updated it to 3.2.8. Everything on the old ROM was working except the themes, of course.
After my update I don't get service. I have bars, but no service. Do I need to do the wire trick again or am I doing something wrong? I haven't had this issue before and I don't see anyone else having this issue.
I wiped cache and davlik before the update. Should I redo the update?
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thx

I did that. Still nothing. I did notice that I my APN disappeared. I have now done a factory reset. See if that will bring me back. I tried manually adding the APN but it wont save.
Try flashing another ROM. Also verify your imei is still in the settings. Factory reset won't help as it just deletes data/sdcard

Why did you flash 3.2.8? Flash the newest version. One version had an APN bug for some reason

I flashed 3.2.8 bc I thought that was the newest version. I guess I found the APN bug. hahahaha.
In either case I appreciate yalls help. I just went with a different ROM I went with the PAC MAN ROM but now I'm having an issue with it reading my SD Card. I'm wondering if it's the gapps file I downloaded. hmmm.. idk.

[Q] doesnt detect SIM network

Well after i stupidly got my phone soft bricked, I downloaded and flashed stock 4.3 rom correct to my region. Everyhting worrked fine after that i was able to call and send messages etc. But today i tryed to root the phone, With multiple ways actually, CF-root, thru CWM. but there was some problems, Bit off topic but after i flashed the CF-root i was rooted, But SuperSU asked me to update binary and after that i wasnt rooted anymore :/
and the problem thru CWM that it didnt root at all, Dont know what the problem was...
*knox warranty gone, didnt even know about such a thing before i searched abit...*
Well anyway now i flashed stock rom again, The same that i flashed earlier and now my phone is buggin with the sim card, It will detect it but its not detecting the network or twhatever it it, So its only allowing Emergency calls...
i have tryed pulling the sim out of the phone etc but hasnt worked
I was wondering it it can be phones fault, For the trys of rooting etc.. Or can it just be the sim cards or the providers error?
Did you check your IMEI? 000 or 04x or something weird?

Edit:
I looked my IMEI from *#06# on dialer, it looked alright but at the end theres " / 01", Should that be there?
The /01 is a check digit.... That should be there. ... Cant share from my Wikipedia app but.... Search for IMEI there, it'll describe it in detail...

And the IMEI Shows on the setting/about device/status, I can see IMEI and IMEI SV, But stuff like IP address, Network are Unkown and Service state is Out of service. Im bit confused what the problem here is
I would try your SIM card on another phone just to make sure, you can usually get a duplicate for free or cheap if thats the issue.
If the SIM card issue is working fine, get hold of the PARAM and WIPE images for your model and run them through Odin, then flash a recent firmware.
At least that is what I would try, but I'm not sure if knox bootloader is going to make it easy for you or not.
Maybe someone else knows more?
Good luck!!!

The sim card cannot be dublicate, As when i bought the phone, Around 4-5 months ago, The normal sim card got changed to the micro-sim that fits into s3.
Im not totally sure what u mean with the "get PARAM and wipe images", and i have flashed the stock rom couple of times, Heck i even ran the Kies FW recovery thingy that does the same thing.. and yea, That ****ing Knox...
WIPE and PARAM are images similar to the firmware ones you used to flash your phone. Except that what they do is completely wipe and re-partition (Think of it like formatting your PC before you install Windows) and then configure the device for the first time. This way we can make sure that it isn't an issue with the way that the firmware was installed (issues can arise if you flash too many times or different roms / versions of android are installed without wiping in between) I don't own an S III so unfortunately I can't help you finding them, though I'm sure someone else will be able to link you to them...

Thanks for the quick replys.
SO installing stock rom thru odin, OR Kies both can fail? if i understood correctly.
Does the region matter on those?
You are most welcome I hope I've been of some help. And yes, there is always a possibility of something going wrong if you do not wipe first (Not so much if you're upgrading from the same rom and android version eg: TouchWiz stock 4.2 to 4.2 , but yes if for example 4.2 to 4.3 or from stock to custom, or vice versa etc..)
As for region, if the model is the same there really shouldnt be an issue, at most you'll have a wrong CSC which would involve having to configure APN settings manually.... But to get that far first we'd need the phone to register on the network.... Which yours isn't doing at the moment... I do not think this is the problem.

So, If id now do full wipe/factory reset, And then flash the stock rom again, Whould it be possible to get the settings back, Or are they now kinda saved thgere?
I think its worth a try..
A wipe will clear all settings, but if you use the right region most will be configured automatically for you (I'm assuming you're refering to the APNs)

Did not help, Im at the same point as before, And it should be the right region as Kies also detects the same region code.
Well, Yea, akward....
I dont know if this did it or was it just the derpyness of me trying something. But what ever
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946915
I flashed this param.bin, But It did nothing, as i guessed tbh.
Then i went to the access points, And then i realised the network operators. I had to register into network there
Yea, Well it is fixed now,
Fix: The problem was probably it just removed me fromt he networks when i tryed to root. And then iu need to register into network again.
Thanks for alesa1988 for quick awnsers
You're welcome, I'm glad it is now resolved

[Q] My new nexus won't start correctly

Hello, I'm pretty much new to the android scene therefore excuse me for my stupidness on this field
I unlocked my nexus 6, then I rooted it and and then I flashed a custom rom (Euphoria 1.0) with WugFresh's Tool.
Yesterday I tried installing adaway and gave it full root permissions, it asked me to reboot and I did so.
After rebooting I realized that I can't unlock my phone nor do anything else except using the pull down notification bar and having a back button, no middle button nor right button.. The screen just remains black. I tried rebooting in recovery mode but nothing changes.
What do I've to do now?
The device doesn't show up as MTP.
When I enter TWRP now it asks me for a password??
I've a Nandroid backup saved on my HDD and I still have the custom rom ZIP saved as well.

Reset your entire phone by flashing the factory image. This can be done with the wugs toolkit as well.

It depends. If your phone doesn't work at the moment because something is wrong in the rom, the chance of the same thing happening could happen again. You can try restoring your nandroid and see if that fixes your problem. If not going back to stock is the best way to fix your problem.

[Q] lost imei

I have nexus 6 in Canada.
I had android 5.0.1. I know it was 5.0.x stock - not OTA updated.
I decided to install chroma rom using the thread here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/development/rom-chroma-01-11-2015-t3000003
I installed twrp, and chroma.
I followed the instructions and it worked.
I didn't flash a radio myself. just the chroma rom, gapps, and supersu.
It worked yesterday.
This morning I got a message that android phone app stopped.
I could not make phone calls or sms.
I didn't put much thought into the error message.
I wanted something more stock and I just installed lightrom.
I only installed lightrom, no other flashing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/development/rom-5-1lightromstock-lmy47e-03-19-2015-t3059493
The problem persists -- no phone calls or sms.
now:
I looked at my about phone in the settings and it says unknown IMEI.
Any pointers to how I can fix this?
Did you flash correct radio ?
Can you see your imei ?
If nothing works flash latest stock.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
What does it say when you type *#06* into the dialer
I see unknown imei in settings about phone status imei info.
I didn't flash a radio individually. I don't know if one of the roms flashed a radio with it.

Update:
I had made a twrp backup of the efs partition. I restored it.
Now the phone calls, sms, and everything works.
Anyone know why it lost the imei?
It was working, I didn't flash anything but the imei disappeared.

hi david,
i have same problem, lost my imei, and unknown baseband
can you upload "twrp backup of the efs partition" please...
i hope that can help me too
david please share efs backup from twrp, hope it help others
His efs backup will not help others. It is unique to his device and will only work for his. Its basically a I'd number. Loosing an imei is serious stuff and makes your phone useless. I'm glad you had a backup. Now I'm curious how so it don't happen to others. Flashing radios won't wipe efs.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
Should I make backup of EFS partition from time to time? Is it change? Is it depend on ROM? I made a backup after I unboxed Nexus. I have EFS backup on my phone, notebook and external hard drive... I hope it is safe
I had the same issue with a Galaxy S5 a while ago, I had to search and find a IMEI repair tool, which I don't think you will find on XDA as it can be used for bad purposes. But they are out there.
You only need 1 backup but the question is how this is happening. I see a lot of threads about it. So its an issue that we all need to figure out how and get preventative measures figured out

From what I've heard, if you flash all of the stock components through ADB (ROM, bootloader, modem, etc), it will trigger a rebuild of the EFS. I'm not 100% sure of this, but I remember reading something along those lines. I believe the phone has a backup partition for the EFS (which contains the IMEI, MAC Addresses, etc).

As others have said. The EFS backup is unique to my device. It won't help you with yours.
If you absolutely cannot regenerate it with the method I said, warranty service is your best bet.

Have you tried to ODIN back to stock? I would start there.
Or use Kies to do a recovery. Either should fix the issue.

Did you happen to do a backup in TWRP before this happened? If so restore it as it defaults to save your EFS folder which hopefully will fix your problem. If not, also try doing an Emergency recovery in KIES, some have said that worked as well. Another way that some have said it worked would be to ODIN back to KK and then upgrade to Lollipop. Just some more things to try.
