G2 still worth getting? - Verizon LG G2

Thinking about ditching my iPhone 5s and coming back to the Android world. Had several Android phones in the past, last one was the Note 3.
Is the G2 still considered a good phone after being out for a while? I'm with TMO right now, and if I switched to Verizon they have it for free with a 2-year contract. How does the G2 compare to its newer G3 sibling?
Thanks.

:highfive::good: I certainly feel the G2 is a powerful device I would recommend to any one!! Still no custom recovery for G3, so my friend is still stuck with stock, I'm enjoyin' Jackpot Clavin's CM11 on my rooted device!! No offense, def a step above apple devices!! :good::highfive:

Yes it is. Great phone, great hardware, great battery. I don't feel the need to upgrade any time in the foreseeable future. There's substantial rumors it's getting lollipop (here's to hoping) so that's a plus!

I read a review recently basically saying there's no tangible difference between the G3 and G2. You wouldnt really notice or care. If modding is important to you then the G2 has been hacked so custom recoveries and stuff are available. I tell you the last time I picked an uncracked phone it was pure agony waiting for the dev's to break it, which took like 7 months.
Also the whole free thing is nice. I got 3 of them for my family just because of that. I am a HEAVY user and the battery easily gets me through the day, usually down to about 25% after 18 hours of HEAVY usage.
The only thing I'm torn on is the size. I've actually thought about "downgrading" to an Iphone 5 just to get something thats more single-hand friendly. The G2 is kind of a two-handed phone. But of course if i need to use a phone that much whereby single-hand is important, then that also means I use it enough where screen real estate should also be important. What good is surfing the web with one hand if I cant read much of anything on the screen? So I think I'll be sticking with the G2 now that I have tweaked the keyboard size and installed Opera which are better suited for one-handed operation.

Why did you decide to stay with the N4 after the N5 was released?

I actually bought the N5 before getting the N4. The fact is, I'm gonna get all of the Nexus devices (all new in box) just because I can. And I plan on using most of them.
But anyway, for those that aren't as Nexus obsessed as me, why did you stay with the N4? I know one answer I'm going to hear: "because it still does what I need". (fair enough)
Just interested in what people think.

Good response. Thanks for sharing.
Some of us are enthusiasts interested in other people's opinions and experiences.
I stayed with the N4 because I think it's more handy. It's a little smaller than the nexus 5 and since I have smaller hands I prefer the nexus 4. Also, the nexus 5's earpiece is weird (atleast for me)
I stayed because I didnt find mych difference and also Im in a condition that buying a new device will probably waste my time ! And also planing to move to google silver or iphone 6

That's different.
Hey, I totally understand why someone would stay with the N4. To be honest, I have relatively small phone needs. My Moto G actually did everything I needed and more. (I gave it to my mom) While we're at it, I bet the Galaxy Nexus would be more than enough for most people. But some people just like having the best. Not that I need it, I just like having it.
No doubt the Nexus 4 is still a strong player in the market. It will have no problem running 5.0
I just wish there was a CandyKat rom for the N4.
I know, a lot of people whom I've told about the earpiece think of it as a weird reason. I, however, just didn't like the design of the phone. But hey, that's just me. I love the moto g and x. They're both very handy phones and pretty solid performers too!
my reason :
- I got my N4 cheap (got $100 discount when I bought it).
- screen density is more than enough for my poor eyes. (tell you the truth I really can tell differences between 415ppi vs 318ppi).
- CPU sector, for me myself my nexus 4 is already fast enough. I mean this is a phone not a laptop/pc, I don't need huge clock speed or ram to play games.
only one two cent personal opinion.

I haven't owned a Moto X, but I know all about it. I bought the Moto G and was very happy with it. My tech-ego got in the way and told me I need a Nexus 5. I don't regret it one bit.

It is a great phone, no questions there
Why did you decide to stay with the N4 after the N5 was released?
I guess because not everyone is as independently wealthy as you. Geez, I just bought the thing only a year and a half ago. Assuming that someone keeps making OS updates for this phone on this forum to keep up with security updates, I will keep it for around the same time-frame as I refresh my main desktop computer, about 5 to 7 years. Heck, my older second desktop computer is 11 years old and runs various versions of Linux as well as XP just fine (Although I disabled XP because it was finally discontinued.) I understand it is the constantly changing hardware that forces Google to very quickly stop supporting OS upgrades on older devices (really just an excuse to sell more devices), but it is really ridiculous that my Nexus 4 will shortly become obsolete by Google's standards, unlike Microsoft who supports their operating systems for a very reasonable amount of time.
I stayed with my Nexus 4 because Nexus 5 didn't offer a significant difference in performance. I was able to compare that side by side, and the performance of my Nexus 4 was just fast as Nexus 5. So i saw no point in change.
As i'm a non gamer guy, i think Nexus 5 will perform better games than Nexus 4, but i really don't play much.
Personally speaking, changing phone every year (some people always want to stay on fashion), seems to me like throwing money away, i think it's better change of 2 in 2 years, then you'll notice more technology improvement.
Another situation, was when i saw the Nexus 5...i was totally disappointed with his design..i mean look at the Nexus 4...it has an amazing design, glass on the back, all seems to be in harmony.
In Nexus 5 it's just a phone...don't know...lack of personality, i guess....lol
Now, i'll be waiting for Nexus 6...let's see if it worth...
Most of the replies posted in the thread apply to me as well. Some additional thoughts that kept me away from the n5:
It feels better in my hands and the size was perfect. The main things I liked were the corners of the nexus 4 were more curved than the 5, and that the tapered edges of the n4 screen felt natural.
I also preferred the n4's "discrete" camera compared to the gigantic wart that's on the back of the n5.
Sent from my Nexus 4
I stayed because I won't jump to another phone until I see significant improvement in technology as nowadays it's just spec bumps. I think the 4th is more than enough to last for another 2 years. I'll probably change next year with the coming of L and 64bit phones and only if it really matters. Oh, and I'm not rich enough to change phone every year ?

No CandyKat? It is there, right here.
My reason? Saving up my money for my masters degree studies.
I got the N4 on contract which isn't up until March next year.
Being a student I couldn't afford to buy it outright, and obviously couldn't afford to buy the N5 when it came out.
I will, however, be buying the Nexus 6 the moment it's released. I should have my student loan through by then.
Priorities, right?
I think the Nexus 4 is a gorgeous looking phone (I'm a sucker for the glitter back) and I like how the edges curve as well, it is a unique design. It's also one of the most comfortable device to grip. Lastly, the size of the screen and phone are very similar to the Moto X, which is the ideal size for me. I believe LG went with cheaper production cost with the N5. I originally sold my N4, but when Android L preview image was announced, I was dying to try it out, so I bought another N4. I'm not planning to sell it again (I hope), there is a charm about this device that I like.
I to am a nexus lover. I did buy a n5, I do use it as my daily phone for the most part. but I do occasionally use my n4 as my phone as well. actually, I use my n4 and n5 every day. my n4 I use daily as a WiFi device at work. and it is still a great device! but those that say that the n4 is on par with the n5 when it comes to speed, are just kidding themselves. sure, in the ui, its just as fast as my n5. heck, my gnex is as fast in the ui as my n5. but I'm not talking ui, as any phone(even my nexus s) can have a fast ui if you set it up right. I'm talking opening apps/process, and computing. the n5 blows my n4 away when it comes to apps opening, and the speed of actually computing. anyways, that doesn't take away from my n4, as I do love it as part of my family
I stayed because it wasn't that BIG of an upgrade from the N4 to be honest. Definitely getting the N6 whenever its announce/released.
I got the my Nexus 4 when Google put them on sale last year before the 5's release. I'm in the process of convincing the wife that I need (aka want) a Nexus 5.

Give up g3 for n6?

I have a g3, currently. I've never had a nexus phone, although my son had a n7 a couple of years ago so I'm slightly familiar with nexus.
I've been dead set on getting n6 upon release, but as I get more used to the g3, I find things that'll be hard to live without.
Something I really like about the g3 is the ability to just start drawing on my screen and then share the screen shot. Its called quickmemo and it's attached to the nav ring, very easy to access. I'm wondering if nexus has a feature like this?
The other thing is the clip tray/board. Does nexus have an accessible clip board with multiple past "copies"?
Will I need to get third party replacements for these things? Is nexus still as bland as I remember that old 1st gen n7?
I don't care to run custom Roms but I'm sure I'll root and use some xposed mods. Os updates is the biggest factor in why I want a nexus.
The thing about the G3 is that it's a lag fest so for me personally it's a phone that turns me off.

Change your launcher to GNL. That might give you an idea of how the stock Android would be. Of course, a lot of the tweaks that the G3 has you may not see on the N6, but the N6 is still all about having the latest Android software. Not so sure about the G3. The AT&T G3 version has not recieved any updates, while there have been a few for the international G3 versions. At least with the N6, you would be getting update support for quite a while.
GNL still lags... or at least isn't as smooth as it is on the Nexus 5. I'm not sure if it's the stock ROM, or if this phone just isn't destined to be fast with this chipset. I do like some of the stock features of the LG ROM, but you can always find apps or other ROMs which build in similar functionality on a device like a Nexus. Just takes a little more work, but you can get things exactly how you like them.
I'm making the switch... The G3 is a nice phone, but does have a bit of lag. I thought it would be an upgrade from my N4. IMO the only improvement has been the screen. N6 will be even better!
XDA and the Nexus6 will blow the rest away!
I have the G2 and my friend has the G3. The thing I'll miss most is knock on/off, although N6 is supposed to have double tap or pick up to wake.
IMO G2/G3 have far less lag than Samsung phones and are a real design innovation with minimal bezels, huge battery life and a skin with useful features instead of gimmicks. I have no doubt Nexus 6 will be better though and plan on getting one.
N6 >>>
I'm enjoying this Nexus 5 other than the battery life. My Note 3 on AOSP was faster than it but this is smooth af and the N6 will be much more smooth
I'm going to be getting the N6 and selling my G3 (providing UK pricing isn't crazy).
Although the G3 is brilliant, and I don't have any of this so called 'Lag' I did originally want the N6, but needed a phone!

I'm going to use T-Mobile Jump to move from my G3 to the Nexus 6. LG isn't known for doing the best job when it comes to supporting their hardware after they have your money. Also, the nearly nonexistent development is a huge turn off for me. I'll miss some G3 features, but most can be emulated.

The dev isnt non existant, there are devs working on CM11 although with L and a new code base coming up, many devs for the G3 are waiting for L source to drop...the G3 with CM11 is alot more smooth than the stock rom, L will only improve it...the G3 is a good phone i've used it, isnt any worse than TW on a samsung device, but the the n6 will be the latest and greatest...is it worth the money to fork out for the n6 at 649 probably not for most ppl, now if you can sell you g3 for 350+ at 300 it mite be. That said as i've gotten every nexus device since the gnex as a result i'll be getting the n6

As crazy as it sounds, when I ditch the G3 for a N6 the one thing that I'm probably going to miss the most is the back buttons on the G3. I've never realized just how convenient it is to have all of my buttons on the back of the phone essentially right where my fingers are typically resting. It seems like I'm in the minority of users who are actually going to miss the G3. I've never had any noticeable lag problems with mine and it's a very well built phone with some nice features. This will be my first Nexus phone purchase; it's just too nice for me to pass up right now.

I have similar feelings about my G2, you are not alone, lots of people love LG phones. I like them much better than Samsung's locked down, Knox ridden, TW infested phones, that's for sure.
Im keeping sometime my g3 waiting for a clean stock rom with all crap removed. I sacrified my n5 and sold it.

I would do the same if I were you too. I played with the G3 in a store and while I liked the overall phone (a bit thick for me and the screen wasn't as bright or vivid as I would've liked but the screen size-to-body ratio is fantastic) I would still hold onto it. I'm sure you can remove all the software and install vanilla Android L on the device.
'Sacrificing' the Nexus 5 for the G3 isn't such a big sacrifice you've now got a bigger screen in a similar sized device, bigger battery, better cameras & flash. The downside as noted is the OS but that can be removed.
In my opinion by the time the Nexus 7 (Nexus 6 replacement) phone arrives you will still be with your 'vanilla' G3 and be comfortable to upgrade then. No rush. Real world difference between a totally vanilla G3 and Nexus 6 would be negligible - I would go so far as to say that a vanilla G3 would match the Nexus 6 in everyday speed and probably have longer battery.
I have 2 G3's the Cat 6 (SD805) and regular SD801 model. Neither lag and I really love the G3 but I'm selling the SD805 model and getting a Nexus 6. I'm keeping my other G3 because it's a great phone. I just want a bigger vanilla android phone so the Nexus will be my daily driver while the G3 will take a backseat for now.

After using the g3 for some time, i installed lollipop on the n5, i loved the rom but the smaller screen felt like a toy for me, so i sold it to cut the price on the n6 and went back to g3.

So can someone confirm the N6 will have double tap to wake? I know the N9 definitely has

Anyone coming from G3?

I am debating going for the nexus 6 or the G3. Normally I would be all over the nexus but with the recent unlocking of the ATT version of the G3 I a now torn. Has anyone left the G3 for the nexus, and can you tell me why you left? How did they each compare : screen, camera, quickness?
Probably a little premature with the question since the first people are just getting the Nexu 6 delivered today.

Just wanted to get it out there early. See if any one wanted to chime in on why they are leaving the G3 or had any info that would be helpful.
I have the G3 and can't decide what to do. This years round of phones was difficult.. they all had some kind of flaws. The only real flaw of my G3 is the lag. I have it pretty customized at this point and have gotten it to a very minimal amount. Standby time is awesome.. SOT sucks. I wish the screen temp wasn't quite so cold, and the over sharpening does get annoying to look at. Then again, knock code, IR blaster, removable battery and sd card, laser auto focus camera... ugh, such troubling first world problems.

I have both and in keeping both. I love my G3 and its fantastic camera. Both phones serve s different purpose for me but the G3 camera focuses faster than the Nexus r due to it's laser. I just got my Nexus so I can't fat to much else but I'll update you when I get more of a feel for it. It's a big phone but result manageable with my average sized hands. The screen isn't as bright as the G3 but it's easier to read on the sun for me. The Nexus also feels more solid to me and I love the size.

I think I am leaning toward the Nexus just based on specs alone. The 805 paired with 3gb and 420 gpu are good enough to last for a couple of years I think. Coupled with the updates and I hope it will be a solid device. Just want to make sure. $700 is a big chunk of change to drop n a device and not be satisfied.

I had the G3 Cat 6 (SD805 model) and the regular SD801 G3. I sold the cat 6 one and got the Nexus instead. I love both phones but each serves a different purpose for me the nexus will take some getting used to but I really enjoy it. I don't think I could choose just one right now but the Nexus is faster than my cat 6 G3 so it's worth it to me. It also makes my regular G3 look slow. I've had a G3 since launch back in May (3 models total) and I wouldn't sell my last one because I like it too much. The nexus is great its a solid phone with a nice screen and good battery and I will be using this as my DD for now. I can't wait to get TWRP and custom ROMs because that's why I have the Nexus. I'm probably rambling on but that's just because I'm excited about using my Nexus 6( I'm typing this on it)
ill be leaving my g3 in the dust come wednesday. the battery life sucks really bad with the snap 801. i cant even tell you my Sot because i had to charge my phone twice today.
Lately ive had issues with the g3 where ill double tap to wake and/ or press the unlock button and it wont respond.
I also told myself when i got my nexus 5 that i would never get another carrier branded phone.
Double two to wake doesnt work on my nexus 6 but it does work on my nexus 9. I miss tapping to wake but both phones are still great.

No please continue rambling.
I've grown to hate my g3. The battery seems good to me. The screen and camera r great but it just lags way too much, the screen always turns back on after using the button to lock it. I've also had problems with data where I have to turn it off and back on to get it to work at an acceptable speed. Now the other day I noticed it has the famous crack at the bottom mic.
Motorola nexus has always been my dream phone and while I will miss a few features of LG I actually like and the ir blaster which I use all the time, I won't look back. My last nexus I was very happy with for 2 years and I think this will be a great phone. Can't beat Motorola build quality.

I've sold My lg g3 for The Nexus 6 it will be my first Nexus device. I loved everything about the lg g3 I brought it day one and didnt have any problems with it. I've been waiting on Motorola to make a Nexus phone. I will miss knock code, the laster auto focus,ir blaster, the way they had the power buttons and volume buttons. Also for the sd card but I brought a WD wifi drive for that problem.
This benchmark is pretty good considering my phone was warm and charging when I tested it.
I'm coming from the G3. I like the 3 and think it's a great phone though. It has started to lag a little bit, but I'm running a lot of modules on it and those may be the cause.
The only real thing that I never liked about it was the colors. Both colors suck imo. The blue N6 sucks for the color too from what I've seen. So it's like an even trade.
The main reason I'm leaving it is because I'm on Jump and the N6 has a few features I want.
I'm also coming from the G3. I've had a great experience with the G3. I originally came from the G2 and the G3 was a great upgrade. I'm averaging about 5hrs SOT on the G3 and that's with constantly playing Clash of Clans. So I'm pretty happy with it so far. I'm running Darkwulfs Beta 2 BTW. It was an impulse buy while I was waiting for the Moto X and Nexus 6. But I have pre-ordered my N6 and can't wait to get it. Last year I was anticipating the N5 but jumped the gun impulsively on the G2. I did it again this year with the G3. Can't wait to have this behemoth any time this week. I just got my dad a Note 4 so I can't wait to compare the phones side by side along the G3.

The Nexus 6 camera isn't as good as my G3 but in happy with it. I just ever a decent camera app like LG's for the Nexus and then I'll be happy.

I wonder if someone could port the moto x camera apk if and see if that could produce better pictures. I remember someone on the G2 forums ported the G2 Stock camera so it could be used on aosp. I used it on PA and CM and it worked well.

I really want that because I hate the google camera. It won't install normally and there no root to yet so I can't move it manually to see of it will work.

I've made my decision....

I have both the G4 and the S6, as you may or may not know the S6 is unlockable and has had root for a while now. Despite that, I have decided to keep my G4, the potential locked in this phone is way too much to give up on. Odd thing is, the G4
doesnt seem to have had its radios tweaked or optimized, the S6 is a touch faster both on WiFi and LTE. The downside is
the bloat ball called touchwiz. It's choppy and eats a TON of ram. UX 4.0 is far and away better. As far as the cameras go, the
camera on the G4 is faster at getting locked in on what i'm shooting, but when zoomed in, the picture almost looks like an
oil painting. Once we do eventually get the G4 unlocked, I hope we get a camera mod much like the one I had for the G3.
I'm also looking forward to viper4android, that's definitely a must have for Google music imo. Anyway, hopefully we'll get
our beasts unlocked soon.
I agree totally. I had the s6 for a while. It has some awesome features and the camera is great, but it always was buggy and the ram issue was horrible. The G4 may not be perfect but I am enjoying it a lot more than my s6.

I concur with both of you. I had the S6 Edge and sold it for the G4. I'm just surprised we not only don't have root yet, but that there hasn't really been any direct talk of if anyone is close. That is a big concern to me. From my experience, there are usually folks chatting about their progress (or lack thereof). Anyway, love the device so far....

i agree too on going with the G4, i sold my nexus 5 and got the G4 before i even checked in here to see if it was rootable/unlockable yet
and the reason no one is talking about it is that so many people come in here complaining about no root or not being able to unlock their phone yet, but it is being worked on and in fact the devs doing it have unlocked carrier phones (from what i have seen), they are just working on a way to make it easy for the general public to do it and to make sure there is a way back or at least a way to not brick your phone. plus LG is on here too so there isnt much chatter here so that LG doesnt patch what they are working on before they can even get it out to us
it will come i am sure of it
Me too, i find this to be this first device i could use without root, i would still rather have it than not, but i could own this phone long term without it. Glad to see a positive note and people having the same experience i am with the phone. I also was a former S6 owner, my wife has it now so i can really check them out side by side and its no contest, and thats with my wife on a custom rom.
I was thinking how far phones have come since I got my first Android phone back in 2012 (Mytouch 4G Slide) Some great ROMS on that old thing. I moved on up to a Nexus 4 from that. The so called professional review sites claim that the differences between the S6 and G4 cameras are so small that it's hard to pick a clear cut winner, but I tell you, the only flaw in the G4's camera is the over sharpening. The S6's camera software kinda sucks, the viewfinder looks grainy and the pictures aren't any better. The ram issue sealed it for me, the darn thing has 3gb of ram available, how does T/W use that much?
Wow, so sad to see no progress on root and twrp. I bought this device thinking I was getting the "full" flagship experience.

define full flagship experience?
[soapbox]
and just because no one is posting about it doesnt mean no one is working on it. give it time, dang, the phones only been out for 2 and a half months. thats the problem with xda these days, we are so hellbent on having root and being unlocked so we can void our warranty and flash firmware to our expensive devices for what? so we can say "hey look i unlocked my phone and flashed CM on it, take that LG, now my phone is not near as good as it was when i bought it"
LMAO

It was a figure of speech. Lol. In reality, I'm good without root for a while.

I just want ad blocking... Custom ROM's aren't my thing anymore.
Love the phone but the jank is really starting to get to me. Picked up my N5 today and was shocked at how much smoother it was than my G4
Hi all, jumped the Sammy ship after some 3.5 years using Galaxy devices (latest was a S4). It's actually the first time I get a flagship almost when it's been released, and so far this phone seems like a great device. I'm not looking for custom ROMs yet, root would be nice, but as it stands it's an awesome Android flagship.

Glad to see some people are not afraid to state the truth. I have a g4 s6 nexus 5 and oneplus one now and the g4 is the slowest. Just sits on my desk. Is funny how oneplus one and nexus 5 feel way faster than the s6 and g4.

Biggest issue I'm having is with WiFi. I'm not sure if it just slows itself down or becomes unresponsive but there's something that's making my internet hang.
I had the same issue. I installed DNSet and my WiFi started working better

Same here. My One Plus is smoother and faster . Rooted Zmax is faster . Love the form factor of the G4 ,but text and mms issues are starting to annoy me to no end....
Because the N5 use stock android, the biggest advantage of the G4 is much longer battery life. For me it's matter because the battery on Nexus is non-swapable and battery life is not good.

Left the note 4 because of the crap camera taking forever to focus and the gps that never could find a signal. At first i thought i made a mistake because of the lag i was getting before updating to the new N update and i am not looking back. The g4, at its 479 price point is a monster

LG G2 Thoughts in 2015/2016

With 2016 approaching do you have any intentions to upgrade to the LG G5 or otherwise? What's keeping you from upgrading or pushing you towards upgrading?
I only need Band 2 LTE to use my new T-Mobile line with. What about you guys?

I would probably switch to G5 if it comes with a 4k display and if it looks something like this the concept shown on techradar.
I'm pretty happy still though haven't had phone long. Would like an update to 5.1.1 then see what comes along. Lots of good phones out there now at good prices. But this is still one of them.

I wouldn't. The battery life of this one its incredible and the new ones dont offer anything that can be real % improvement.
Only if LG creates something like the S6 active (with incredible battery, water resistant, rugged, etc) that would be the only reason to change it. Otherwise, there's something that the G2 can't handle?
If the GPS was perfect, then I would never upgrade. This phone can still do everything and it's perfect size and screen to body ratio.
I feel like the camera could be better. So I am upgrading the note 5 or moto x pure. Going to try another rom first though.
GPS is my number 1 issue, mine doesn't work at all. I will hopefully upgrade when the new Nexus 5 comes out (Verizon better have it...)
This phone has aged really well though, still as fast as when I got it (my galaxy nexus not so much) and there's really been no significant improvements for phones since it came out.
I'm not interested in a phone that I can't update myself and there just really hasn't been anything that I am interested in upgrading to that's out currently.
The stock rom on this phone is god awful ugly though, got rid of it immediately with CM.
The battery life is why I haven't moved on to a G3,G4 or a Samsung. My GPS works fine, when I need it. I'm only rooted and using the LG stock rom 39a.
My only real wish is a better camera, though the video part comes out fine

the jury is out
My wife has had hers for over a year, my screen broke. I just bought her a nexus 6 for christmas, she bought me a note 4. The jury is still out for her lol I think she likes the G2 better. The note 4 she got me is verizon so Im not very impressed. Ive had the Tmobile note 4 and that was a GREAT phone. The VZW version just isnt development friendly. Sucks because I love the note 4.
