[Q] Enable Simultaneous Voice and Data on 2G or 3G? - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is anyone aware of means/method of enabling Simultaneous Voice and Data on 2G and/or 3G?
Scenario::
You receive a call and you are talking on the phone but the same time you want to browse through a couple of websites using browser, or check for new incoming emails, or lookup for some location on Google maps.
I am on 2G Network, Airtel (Maharashtra Goa) based out of India.
I checked a few thread on XDA and found one which talks about this by doing a few tweaks in the Build.Prop file.
Like for example
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=951765
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11329631&postcount=19
This one is for Xperia X10
ro.ril.hep=1
ro.ril.hsxpa=2
ro.ril.enable.dtm=1 (This is the setting for enabling Dual Transfer Mode or simultaneous Voice and Data
ro.ril.gprsclass=12
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=8
ro.ril.enable.a53=1
ro.ril.hsupa.category=5
So I indeed added the below line in my build.prop file and rebooted my Xperia Z1, but no luck.
ro.ril.enable.dtm=1
I haven't done all the settings i displayed above because i am not sure of what class Xperia Z1 is (i think it is Class 32, but i may be wrong).

It must be supported by your carrier too, if your 2G network dosent support dual transfer mode it will not work even if you have 2000$ worth phone.

Appreciate your response.
Ok, I understand. And i did read a few articles saying the same thing.
Strange that Airtel Calcutta has this feature supported (when the initial post was subbmited in the other thread on 13th February 2011) and Airtel Maharashtra does not. By the way, Airtel Calcutta and Airtel Maharashtra are two different cellular circles but in the same country (India) and managed by the same company Airtel.
Anyway, is there a way to check if this feature is supported by my cellular network without having to contact them. I can bet they would not know what this is. I did try to Google this info but was not helpful.
I am looking for a way like an app or a link where we can test if this feature is supported by the Cellular company. Is there a way to test this ourselves?

I know app open signal map, but I don't know will it help you to much.
I think only contacting them is easiest way.

Globe Access Point for Galaxy Note from Philippines

I'm from the philippines and i am using globe prepaid as my network. I asked from globe what is the configuration for 3g, the lady gave me a configuration sheet but when i entered as my access point, i cannot access the internet. I have a friend who uses xperia ray and he cannot connect as well. Any note user from the philippines kindly help or share your 3g settings. Thanks!

I've just had a quick Google and there are lots of suggestions out there. Here are some, hopefully one helps you:
First
Second
Third
Fourth
Fifth
APN
I tried all the configuration for the said links but unfortunately I still cannot make my 3g work. Although I found in one forum that when he changed his SIM card to a new one (probably a more recent one), he was able to make his 3g working. Can anyone confirm this? My sim card I think is about 4 to 5 years old but when in my Nokia N95 before, I was able to have 3g connection (it is the one instead of the antenna signal icon in turns into 3g icon).

[Q] HELP UK model with serious signal issues on ATT in the USA

Hi all, well my One arrived from the UK today.. As I feared it does not have the ATT LTE bands that PDAbd.net suggested it had, bummer, but I can live with HSDPA... Set up the phone, it asks me to select the operator I am unsing, with ATT as the first choice... all goes well.. I load it up and initial impressions... WOW.. what a great phone.
BUT and and very BIG BUT.... the signal is terrible... bouncing from no signal to 2 bars and displaying H one minute, 3G the next and then E...
Driving down a notorious road it drops the call at least half a mile before typical and doesn't pick it up again until even later..
Does anyone know if there are any setting I can adjust to optimize to ATT?
I really do not want to put it is back in the box, but unless someone has a suggestion for me, I have no choice...
Help!!
Many thanks,
Nick
A quick question. Where did you get your HTC One? And have you used any other HTC Phones before and got good signal with it?

Hi There,
I bought it in the UK. It was a legitimate HTC supplier and an unlocked model 801n.
I have used a couple HTC phones in the past:
ATT 8X - worked well (at least as far as signal was concerned, but that was the ATT model)
I also had a Verizon Incredible, but since that is a different provider, I am ignoring it.
Other phones I have right now adn tested in the same location with the same SIM:
1. ATT - Galaxy note 2 - good signal no issues
2. ATT LG Optimus G - Good signal no issues
3. ATT Iphone 5 Good signal no issues
4. ATT Nokia 920 - good signal no issues
5. Blackberry Z10 - unbelievably good signal - no issues - Unlocked ATT bands, not ATT branded (Purchased from Expansys USA)
This is why I am wondering whether it is some kind of optimization issue. I cannot believe HTC could have made such a mistake in design. Also, if I switch to GSM only, I have full bars.... It is only on 3G and HSDPA that the signal is poor and the display oscillates between 3G and H
Any advice?
Many thanks,
Nick
Are you rooted? The solution is disabling fast dormancy on HTC One. New HTC devices enables fast dormancy by default which affects & weakens signal strength on networks that doesn't support it yet. If not I am not aware of any ways to disable it without root yet. I'll update you if I find one.
On UK almost all networks do support fast dormancy already except for Three UK so that maybe the reason why it's enabled by default in the US however I am not aware of the implementation of network carriers there sorry.

Thanks for the advice!!!
No I am not rooted - what will I lose if I root it? Do you know of a link to a simple thread with rooting instructions and how to disable the fast dormancy? I am not super experienced with Android yet
Does anyone know whether ATT supports fast dormancy of not?
Also, I have been led to believe that the One supports a number of carrier frequencies, but they only enable those for the specific region it is sold in. Do you know if there is a way to enable the other frequencies? Or is this just an unfounded rumor? Also, do you know if there is a way to check which LTE band the phone I have is equipped with - Not an on-line reference, but a way to find it on the phone?
Many thanks!!
Your warranty if you mess something in the software's side like bricking your phone & OTA updates. But you'll be able to update anyways just by directly flashing on the phone.
Anyways here's a noob proof app to rooting. Please do some research first before going so you'll not mess this up.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2183942
And... No. AT&T doesn't support fast dormancy.

Check this regarding what is Fast Dormancy and tell us if it works(probably NOT (it works only to samsung phones) but it is easy to try) http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-international/674208-fast-dormancy-in-nutshell.html
"To turn FD on/off enter *#9900# in the dialler to get into the SysDump screen then select the Fast Dormancy option"
You mind sharing the link if they have stock? Good luck with the signal issue.

I had a friend with an international GS2 with the same problem. Constantly bounced from HSPA+ to 3G to EDGE to no signal. I'm 99% sure that the issue is network settings, you likely need to check SIM card, data plan provisioning, APNs, etc.

Hey, thanks - Do you know what settings I should use? I have an LTE provisioned SIM card...I assume that should be ok, since the phone is LTE enabled, just wrong bands? I have tried with Auto LTE on and of - I currently have it on GSM/WCDMA - it has been working better the past day, but it is still not right..
The SIM works perfectly in the Note 2, Optimus G etc. So I am wondering whether I need to look at the APN or something like that, but I do not know what the best settings should be. Anyone have this info?
Many thanks,
Nick

APN shouldn't affect your mobile signal reception. It's just made for cellular data profiling. So you are able to connect to the internet.
How about try setting your network selection mode to manual and just select the top most usable network there?
Interesting... I am in Korea right now and have great signal... no issues at all. However, my data indicator is still bouncing between H and 3G, so that is very strange...
Despite the indicated low signal and bouncing data connection type indicator, the phone is working well, have not dropped a call recently and excellent phone call quality...
NO LTE connection in Korea though.. I assume that is probably due to ATT not having a LTE roaming data service agreement here? I believe my phone has at least one LTE band that it supported here.
Have fun..
Nick
I think u should talk to att people may be they can help? With the signal issue or the data connection issues!

I can't really help you but as far as I know LTE is already unlocked and working on all international S4 Actives. Mine certainly worked perfectly out of the box - although I turned it off promptly because I have ****ty 4G coverage where I live so it was nothing but a battery drain for me.
Are you sure you have a 4G sim card, and that you are in an area where 4G has coverage?
If you go in under settings > connections > more networks > mobile networks > network mode don't you have the LTE option at the top?

Im not 100% but i got the textmessage from my provider, so i recon they only send it to people who are able to use the 4G.
Yes, i am in a 4g coverage area
i dont have the LTE option at the top no. i have:
- wcdma/gsm
- only wcdma
- only gsm

Well then I really have no idea - the only thing I can think of is that you might need to replace your sim card if your provider didn't already do so in advance of the 4G rollout. Hopefully someone with more information might step in here, but the international version is LTE capable out of the box. If you don't hear anything else I'd suggest to try and contact vodafone and get a clear answer from them first.
If you check the mobile networks in your area and don't see anything that supports LTE, you may just live in an area that doesn't have it yet (people get 4G and LTE somewhat mixed up - 4G is the overall identifier for a whole class of technologies with "4th generation cellular networks" basically while LTE is technically one of those technologies so, it should rightfully be classified as 4G in most respects.
Having said that, the only way I got my GS4A to function in LTE mode - meaning it actually shows LTE in the notification bar under the 4 with a small G and LTE underneath it - was to go into the service menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and change the preferred network type to either LTE only or LTE/GSM auto (PRL). Once I did that the radio would reset and connect and then it would be in proper LTE mode. Doing a speedtest with the Speedtest.net app shows LTE as the connection whereas with my standard setting which is WCDMA Preferred (T-Mobile AWS) it'll just show as "4G."
I've had no luck making alterations in the Settings/Mobile Networks section, I have to change it in the service menu to get LTE functional. I don't use it because here in Vegas where I live (specifically my home location) the LTE mode gets me about 1-2 bars of signal (about 8-12Mbps) whereas the WCDMA Preferred setting pulls in 5 bars rock solid and 25-35Mbps.
Can't do screenshots or I'd add them, I'm running the pre-release MI2 ROM presently and that aspect is borked.

That would be because you're on the i537 from ATT, rather than the i9295 that this discussion is about. I checked google and vodafone holland does indeed use LTE on the right bands in its brand new rollout, so it isn't that - most likely it's his sim that needs replacing or it's just not activated on his account yet.

Will nexus 6 support data while on a call?

Apparently the droid turbo can't, which is amazing as far as I'm concerned, and unfortunately a deal breaker for me.
Someone please tell me this phone won't have the same problem?

This will be fixed soon on all the new Verizon phones. Same with the Sony Z3v.
It depends on the network. ATT can data and call.
Verizon phones can. I have a note 4 and can make calls while browsing the web

I'm not sure about all Verizon phones I guess. I just mean it's possible on their network right now
At first most likely not. Droid life did a video making a call while on Verizon and it dropped data as soon as it started calling and came back once finished.

Its not something that is broke ....the oem are making these phones with only one path from modem .... either data or phone can use but not both. ..it's been that way since g2 on sprint ...you can use wifi and phone though
You can when vzw goes VoLTE since it will be using the same network type. This uses same antenna as I phone and other moto devices that do not support simultaneous voice and data
Does Sprint's Spark network support it?
I think Verizon has given the date for the update as mid December. At least for the Turbo, that's the case. Still somewhat mystifying why you would release three major "flagship" phones— Sony zv3, Droid Turbo and the Nexus 6— before your ducks are in a row with simultaneous calls and data.

VoLTE
I'm confused. I thought the fact that voice was over CDMA is the reason why we can have simultaneous data and voice. Back before Verizon got LTE there was no simultaneous voice and data. Then once LTE came along, suddenly simultaneous voice and data worked (and has worked for me since). The way this was explained to me was that voice uses CMDA and data uses LTE (which is GSM) so they can coexist.
So I guess I'm confused about two things...
1.) Since simultaneous voice and data has been working for years now, what makes these new phones (Turbo & Nexus 6, specifically) any different. Why is this suddenly a concern again? It feels like 2012 all over again.
2.) Whatever the reason is that it supposedly does not work, why will VoLTE fix things? It seems to me that once we have VoLTE we'd have voice and data both trying to use the same pipe and have issues again, just like before LTE existed and we had only CMDA.
Perhaps someone can explain

1. some newer VZW phones dont have two radios (ie, one for CDMA voice and the other for CDMA or LTE data).
2. VoLTE with one radio has enough bandwith to simultaneously handle both voice and data. However, VoLTE has a much, much bigger problem as I see it:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/advanced-calling-faqs/
Will my call be handed off automatically when I move from the 3G network to the 4G LTE network and vice versa with Advanced Calling 1.0?
No, calls won t switch between 3G and 4G LTE networks. If your call starts on the 3G network and you move to a 4G LTE coverage area, your call will continue as a 3G/CDMA call. However, if your call starts on the 4G LTE network and you move to a non-4G coverage area, your call will drop.
I live in Houston....presumably a place with lots of LTE coverage. In reality, I am constantly switching between LTE and 3G. with VoLTE, I'll be dropping calls like crazy.

There are several factors that may affect Volte:
1. Your provider may have restricted Volte only to their own devices
2. The frequency they use volte on may not be supported by the phone
3. You may require IMS credentials from your carrier
4. Your device may require modem upgrade, which is not available.
Look at Volte discussion on Z2-Z3 threads. You may need to install LP stock firmware and use a special app to select Volte modem that is already in baseband, but not activated and then return to Jaguar.
All I have said in my thread is that Volte is supported on Android side...

You can only have high definition calls when both devices have a working Volte. If the other phone doesn't have it (which about 95% don't), you are limited by the quality coming from the other phone. In other words, the channel you are on is wide enough for HD, but if no HD is coming from another phone, there is no Volte quality. It is going to take years and new devices for this to work...

Bro, you don't seem to understand the situation with Reliance Jio; its a brand new 4G ONLY carrier with NO 3G/2G fallback. Which means that if your phone doesn't have VoLTE then you can't make a phone call. To circumvent this problem , Jio made an app - Jio4GVoice , which lets you make calls and send messages even if you don't have VoLTE . But that app isn't working for me. I just wanted to know if this is a common problem with the Z1.
P.S: can someone confirm that band 40 works if I unlock it using olokos' method?

Try to see if the app can be configured. If you can place a call and then it cuts off once the other party picks up, you may not have enabled the correct codec.
In my view, having a Volte only network is stupid. The company probably is cutting corners to save money. Also, check LTE speed, I bet you are not going to have high speed at all. I have read Reliance's website: looks like too much hype...
Edit: Again, the only benefit of having Volte is high definition audio and video. And neither would work unless both phones are Volte and on the same network. If you don't have that, you have no benefit of Volte. Here is the same from the Indian Express::
"HD Calling is being touted as a major feature of the VoLTE saga, but there is a caveat. Calls are in HD only if the parties engaged in a phone call are both on Reliance’s Jio network The call has to originate and terminate on a VoLTE enabled handset. You can still make and receive calls from other networks, but they won’t be in the higher quality standard that you can expect from a VoLTE call."

No , the app doesn't have much config options .
Sometimes , the phone I call rings half a second and then cuts out other times it just cuts out out without anything.
I've tried it and volte doesn't work on jaguar ROM. Any ideas??
Your right though the avg DL speed is around 200kBps where I live which ain't nothing to write home about for an LTE network . Then again our Z1 doesn't support band 40 out of the box and that's supposed to be jio's high speed band. But jio is totally free till Dec 31st and well voice calls are free forever. So being able to make a phone call with this sim is kinda important

Volte is a sip call, which requires 1 mb to connect and 3-4 mb for a reasonable quality. 200 kbps, which is gprs, is simply not enough to carry voice.

Hmm ... Maybe that's the reason . But my friends have no problem with that app. That's why I need to know if this is a Z1 specific problem.
Oh and I'd like to point out that its actually 200kBps.
