Hello,
I seem to have gotten myself into a bind, and looking ahead to the 4.4 KitKat release, I am not sure how to get myself out of it. I've already done a lot of research and troubleshooting on my own, but can't seem to resolve the problem.
I purchased an HTC One Google Play edition, and decided to root to apply a quick fix with utilizing the Nexus 5 launcher. To that end, I unlocked my bootloader and rooted. I had a Windows 7 partition on my Mac at the time, but it was giving me trouble. Since the root, I became dissatisfied with the performance of the phone, and attempted to restore to factory.
I flashed stock recovery again, and relocked the bootloader. Now the bootloader shows as "relocked" and "tampered." However, in between root and unroot attempts, I upgraded my partition to Windows 8.1. Suddenly, when in fastboot, my HTC One shows up as "USB Device not Recognized," meaning I cannot issue any commands using ADB. If I don't get "waiting for device" I get "device offline," and my device is still rooted.
Whenever I uninstall Super SU, it's right back upon reboot.
I currently have S-ON. I am unable to get S-OFF because my computer doesn't recognize the phone when in fastboot. I tried updating and downloading different HTC Drivers to no avail.
I want to attempt to get my device back to its exact status when I bought the phone. Meaning, I want to have my bootloader as locked, keep S-ON (although I don't mind having S-OFF temporarily), and flash the stock RUU/Recovery. Upon Google Search, this seems easy, but there is not much out there for the GPE. A lot of the guides I have found are for Sense versions. My phone is not a GPE conversion. It is an actual GPE phone purchased on the Play Store.
Phone is functional, but I am concerned when 4.4 comes out, the update will fail or brick.
Sorry if this thread is long. I wanted to be as detailed as possible when asking for help. Thanks again to anyone on XDA who can assist.

try this http://plugable.com/2012/12/01/windows-8-and-intel-usb-3-0-host-controllers
it worked for some users
Thanks. Will try when I get home. I was able to use my Win 7 computer at work to unlock the boot loader again, but I cannot get S Off. I ran rumrunner and it looked like it was working, but then said FATAL: download update. Is there no rumrunner for GPE?

Update: Your suggestion worked perfectly! I was able to unlock my bootloader again from my windows 8.1. I'm now trying to get S-OFF and flash the stock gpe RUU. To date, the RUU fails to install, and rumrunner gives me errors that ask me to run the program again. I feel I am still stuck as I want to eliminate root and make sure I can receive OTA. Is there anything else I can do? I'm still running stock 4.3 and stock recovery for the GPE.

Yeah I have stock rom and I removed TWRP and flashed stock recovery. Because I did two factory restores from bootloader, I'm assuming the stock recovery is working properly, but I'm a noob at this stuff so I could be wrong.
Going to relock the bootloader, remove SuperSU, and attempt the update when it hits. Hopefully it will work.
Thanks for your help! Since I'm a new member, how do I add to your thanks meter? Want to make sure you're properly....thanked.

you can still get OTA with a rooted phone, as long as you have stock recovery and flashed stock ruu.... tip if your having trouble with flashing ruu change the zip file name to something simple like ruu.zip worked for me.:good:

Can you tell me if your bootloader was 1.54 or 1.55? I have been unable to get Windows 8.1 to recognize the 1.54 bootloader. It always says "device not recognized" If yours was 1.54.0000 I will try this fix. Thanks.
I am 1.54.

Hi All,
I'm new here and I came here because of some verizon HTC One (M7, cid = vzw001) troubles.
Last year when I got the phone I was intent on making it like a Google play edition phone. I did rumrunner to get s-off and I unlocked the bootloader somehow (I don't remember) and rooted it. I tried flashing a GPE rom but being a noob, I flashed a GSM rom and it did not boot. In a frantic effort to make my phone usable I downloaded a deodexed verizon stock rom and flashed it, and thankfully it worked. I was able to get the Sense 5.5 OTA update after that. A little while later, I installed TWRP because I did not have a recovery at all. Now the Sense 6 update has been out for awhile now and I had tried updating to it but it would take me straight to TWRP and stop. Later on I read about how TWRP stops OTA updates so I installed a stock recovery. I also uninstalled root. Today I looked at my mom's HTC One, and I looked at her stats under Recovery Menu:
hboot: 1.57
radio: 1.13.41.0.421
OS: 4.10.605
I flashed a 1.13.41.0.421 radio and updated somehow the hboot got updated when tinkering and now all those specs match my Mom's, but it is obviously not the same OS. My phone from the settings says it is 4.4.2, 3.11.605.1.
What can I do to essentially return it to fresh out of the box state with restored ota capability? I want to be able to update normally like my Mom's phone and I don't care about root access. I'm not sending it in for warranty do I don't care about turning S-ON or dealing with tampered flags.
Also I'm sort of a noob. I only have a basic idea on how to use fastboot, so a step by step walkthrough would be helpful.
Thanks,

Here is a step by step instructions for returning to stock. There is a Verizon HTC One Forum which has a ton of information much more than this forum. The Verizon phone is very different than the GSM version.

I read the thread but the link to the decrypted ruu was gone.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I flashed a 1.44 hboot
and the did fastboot reboot-bootloader
it went to a bootloop and I cant use fastboot
When I plug in my phone to the computer
my phone never says fastboot usb
Windows also says "malfuctioning device"
When I press power on
It goes to boot loop
I can enter the recovery menu
I have no idea how to use adb.
I think I'm screwed.

It looks like you got a corrupt hboot flash. I hope you got the hboot from the Verizon forum instead of this forum. This forum is geared to the GSM phones not the CDMA phones. You need to find a hboot for a Verizon phone in zip format to flash in recovery. The hboot controls the bootloader, so this could be the issue.
If you get that straighten out and you are able to use fastboot again, this post has a stock rom and firmware you can flash. Then you would have been back to stock. Spend time in the Verizon forum.

I did get it from the verizon section.
But I have no custom recovery and no fastboot
I can't adb sideload either.
What should I do?
Hi everyone!
I unlocked using HTCDEV my One (M7-UL , Europe version) with Hboot 1.57 and 4.4.2 with S-ON. After rooting and putting a custom recovery, I received an OTA update to upgrade to 4.4.3.
My question is, Can I upgrade as it or my device will brick ("Furthermore, although you will still be able to receive updates to your device via FOTA (“firmware over the air”), we do not guarantee that updating your device via FOTA will not render your device unusable")? I have read from HTC that if you upgrade an OTA being unlocked, it may fail...
Then:
1) May I relock boot and put a stock recovery in order to upgrade? If so, How does it work?
2) Or maybe I can run Sunshine in my device (i tested and it seems to work, I stopped in paypal step) to get S-OFF and then obtain this RUU and flash it?
Thx in advance!
To receive the ota you need to put the stock recovery back and copy over some of the apps that get deleted when you unlock the bootloader. It's a lot of stuffing around to be honest. Why not just install a custom Rom that uses 4.4.3. They are better than stock roms anyways
But I'm actually receiving this OTA; I'm hesitating to press install button being unlocked...
Tell me examples of these ROMS. Are they 100% compatible with all HTC ONE stock staff, (infrared , beats audio...)?.
Thx
It will let you download an ota if you are on a stock Rom. But if you have a custom recovery or you haven't re added the apps that were deleted when you unlocked it won't install. It won't brick your phone or anything. It just won't install. Maximums and Android revolution are two off the top of my head. Both work fine. Why don't you just experiment a little. Back up your current Rom and try a few others. If you don't like them u can always restore the backup
Thx. I'll try.
One more question, do you recommend me to run Sunshine in 4.4.2 stock rom to gain S-OFF before installing MaximusHD ROM?
and how much is secure doing S-OFF with this tool?
Sunshine does work best on stock roms. It's quick and easy and does compatibility tests to make sure it Will work on your phone. It does cost $25 but we'll worth it if you ask me
Sunshined Done!
Now I'm going to installing MaximusHD, and possible later, GPE (that requires being S-OFF first).
Any good guide explaining GPE<->SENSE (stock or custom)?
Thx
Hello!
I've decided I want to turn my HTC One (International version) into a Google Play edition. I've watched a bunch of videos, and went for it. Everything went fine until the step where I should get S-off. I've tried quite a few tools, but just get an error that my version is not going to get S-off.
I have seen people been able to work around using CM11, but from what I've understood, you need S-off to write anything to /boot, which is where I presume CM11 would be flashed. So, am I missing anything important? Is there a workaround if my phone has HBOOT 1.57, and not S-off already? I hope someone can help me!
TL;DR: My phone is unlocked and rooted, but I can't get S-off using any of the most popular tools. My HBOOT is version 1.57.
I hope someone smarter than me is able to help me! If you need more information, please leave a reply and I'll get all the information I'm able to.
In advance, thanks!

No, you can flash cm11 with s-on. You have to have a custom recovery with which to do it, though. I don't know which tutorial you're using, but it should have a section where you flash the recovery after the bootloader is unlocked. If your bootloader is still locked, then... Are you rooted?
I'm pretty new to HTC, I just came off of samsung, and they seem straightforward and simple by comparison, but with s-off, it seems like there's more room for customization with HTC phones...
Anyway, I found that TWRP won't flash cm11, but Philz_touch will. If you're rooted, grab rashr off the play store and you can flash both of these recoveries right from your phone. I'd go with TWRP 2.6.3.0, though, since the latest didn't like my backups.
Then once those are installed, you boot into bootloader and volume down to Recovery and it'll pop up in a few seconds where you can take backups (<--DO THIS!) and flash new roms and kernels and such.

Have you tried Sunshine S-OFF, it will cost $25 but it is worth it. Once you get S-OFF you can change your CID & MID then flash the GPe RUU or ROM.
Thanks a lot for your replies!
I have actively tried figuring this out alongside reading for my exam today, and recently found and interesting option to work around S-on. My total goal is getting GPE Lollipop on my HTC, and I just now found a thread discussing using a backup from OPs phone. According to many users in the thread, they have been able to recover this backup and successfully run Lollipop with S-on. I did consider buying Sunshine, but due to finding the backup-option, I wanna try the free alternatives first. My goal is like I said running GPE, and I will most likely not install other roms on my phone.
My phone has an unlocked bootloader, custom recovery CWM v6.0.4.8, and my phone is rooted with SuperSU v2.37 at the moment. This might change some since I'm trying to recover a specific backup as my current tactic.
Your replies have definitely added to my understanding of the workarounds, and are much appreciated. If the backup-method don't work, I will try your methods!
PS: I posted in the backup-thread asking some questions. I'm posting my link here to string them both together in case someone else looks for an solution to the same problem I had.

Just got a new m9 been away from htc and rooting for a long time. just upgraded from my trusty galaxy s3. Is there any thing i should be aware of before unlocking boot loader and rooting. the phone is bone stock on 5.0.2 Should i let it update before unlocking boot loader and rooting. To my understanding i should unlock boot loader install twrp and don't mount the system before making a back up. Then install supersu and root or use sunshine to get root and do both.

Welcome back to HTC
It really depends on what you plan to do with your M9.
If you plan on using custom roms then yes unlock and install TWRP. Root is not required to flash roms.
Sunshine does not root or unlock but removes secure write (S-Off) which allows you to install different firmware's etc.
With S-on you can only move forward with firmware's. Lots of people complain about the 25.00, But its well worth it.
If you are not concerned about the cost, then unlock, twrp, flash superSu, and install sunshine and S-off then your free to do anything.
backup if you like but there is a thread with stock backups etc...
hope this helps
My main concern was if i want to use the phone first with out unlocking and it receives the tmobile update that i can unlock and root later.

Yes you can still unlock and root and S-off on the current OS 5.1 - 2.11.531.19, but I would do it before MM comes out for this device.
will do viperone had issues on initial firmware so i flashed the latest ruu, sunshine is next. thanks for the advice.
Hi everyone,
I need some help if you may please. I bought an HTC One M9 phone and for a while it's been telling me to update to the newest android version. However, this was impossible because even when I downloaded de update from TMobile, when restarting, TWRP would kick in and wouldn't let me go through the whole setup. So, I got to some tutorials and I found some guidance but it's all so confusing and I've gotten to a point where I have no idea what to do next.
Phone is from:
-TMobile
What I did:
-Got rid of TWRP
-Got it back to unroot
Phone status as of now:
It works fine, but it's still not updated.
When going into the HTC Download mode screen, i get the following info:
-UNLOCKED
-htc_himaul PVT S-ON
-OS-1.32.531.24
-Warning: Security checking failed NOT_FIND_SMARTIO
FILE /mnt/media_rw/ext_sd/0PJAIMG.zip
File NOT FOUND
ADB is not reading my device when in download mode, I was trying to install stock recovery by following a tutorian in android soul: how to install stock recovery on htc one m9 (sorry but the forum won't let me post the link.
What do I need to do? There are so many tutorials out ther with so many different instructions that I'm totally confused now as to what to install or not to install . I'd like to install the Developer version but if I have to deal with the Tmobile one, that's ok.
Thanks in advance

You say you got rid of twrp and tried to flash the stock recovery but adb is not working, so what recovery is currently on the phone?
I think the simplest solution would be to run the latest RUU from your sd card since you have adb issues (most likely a driver).
This will bring you to current stock 2.11.531.19. This will wipe the device and you must use a 4-32GB sd card.
Place it on the root of the sd card and boot into download mode, vol up to update and let it run.
you can get the RUU here

Wait. I just picked up an M9 myself, and my current plan is to wait until the official T-Mobile Marshmallow OTA is released before I unlock bootloader and S-OFF. My logic being that I could create then create a backup point in TWRP if I can't find a custom ROM that suitably handles T-Mobile specific features (WiFi calling, etc.) and just restore to the stock T-Mobile image.
Are you saying that updating OTA to Marshmallow could limit my ability to use Sunshine for S-OFF?
I suppose I could just S-OFF now and then RUU back to Stock T-Mobile Marshmallow once released?
edit: I'm already on Lollipop 5.1 on my M9. Am I already ****-out-of-luck for Sunshine?

Sunshine will work on the current version. We never know what will come when a new OTA's come out.
An OTA wont relock the bootloader or return it to S-ON. That is why I would recommend to do the S-off before an OTA.

Makes sense.
But won't unlocking the bootloader, flashing TWRP, then going S-OFF with Sunshine make it so that the newest OTA won't be accepted as an actual over-the-air update due to the altered filesystem? I know that I can still RUU, but will RUU not revert my S-OFF back to S-ON and re-lock the bootloader? Or are those things unaffected by RUU, even as an executable RUU?

The RUU will not relock bootloader or rewrite S-On. To accept OTA, you need to have stock unmodified device.
You could run the RUU again or just unroot and flash stock recovery. The OTA will not wipe the device but the RUU will.
Hope this helps.
