[Q] Developer Edition? - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just what exactly is the Developer Edition?
Is it just a plain & simple Sim Free, No Carrier Device in UK.
I see this phrase bantered around with the Moto X 2014 & never find out what the Developer Edition is.
I have a 32gb Sim Free Moto X 2014 coming direct from Motomaker to the UK.....Is this a Developer Edition?
Can someone advise?
I am wanting to Unlock the Bootloader & Root when it comes.
Does unlocking the Bootloader void warranty with Motorola?
Ta

You have the developers edition. It just refers to the unbranded and unlocked Moto X.
Its also the only one where you can unlock the boot loader and not void warranty.

You'll be copying the code wrongly. It's very strict. You have to take out spaces.

There's no financial cost to unlock your boot loader, its free.

Thanks for your reply.
I was going off a FAQ in the General section
Please note, In order to flash any custom Recoveries, you need to have unlocked Bootloader. Barring the open Bounty, the only viable option right now is to buy an unlock code from Motorola.

Motorola does not charge you for the boot loader unlocking code, the only cost is your warranty if you do not have a developer edition.

You can only unlock on VZW and AT&T if you get the developer edition, and the cost is $50 more than the standard device.

So if you just get the regular one, you are stuck with the stock ROM?
Also, is it possible to get the VZW dev edition? I just went through the whole Moto Maker process and didn't see anything about developer edition.

Developer editions aren't eligible for MotoMaker.
The unlock process it free, but as mentioned, it is not currently possible to unlock a non dev Verizon or Att model and the Dev models are not available through Moto Maker. If you're looking at another carrier then VZW or ATT you can unlock from what I read, but since theyre not DEV editions you lose your warranty.

I'm pretty sure they're referring to the SIM carrier lock. Correct me if I'm wrong folks.
I have a Verizon Dev edition with my boot loader unlocked. And I did not have to pay for a unlock key.

I'm not going to go into the reasons why, but Moto does NOT give out the bootloader unlock code for the Retail and MotoMaker X for Verizon, ATT and a few other carriers. There was this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/verizon-moto-maker-bootloader-unlock-t2680651 on purchasing an unlock code from a 3rd party source via Chinese web site, but it has not been available since April 1. And we don't expect it to be available again.

The Dev edition Roms aren't one byte different from the regular ones.
The vzw Dev edition uses the regular xt1060 ROM.
The GSM Dev edition use the T-Mobile xt1053 ROM.
What are you trying to accomplish?!?

There is no hardware or software difference besides the unlockable bootloader. When the bootloader exploit gets released, unlock your device, and it will be nearly the same. (I only say nearly because I feel like i'm forgetting something.

That really doesn't make sense....but no. You can't.
There are SEVERAL XT1058s. Which do you have? The AT&T Variant, or a different one?
If you do NOT have the AT&T variant, you can already unlock the bootloader which basically "transforms" it into a DEV edition without doing anything else.
Any phone with an unlocked bootloader *IS* an un-official "DEV" edition. There is nothing "special" about the Dev editions except for their unlockable bootloaders, or rather the fact that they retain their warranty after being unlocked.
I'm not understanding what you intend to gain?
ALL Moto X's have unlockable bootloaders *EXCEPT* for the Verizon, AT&T, and Republic Wireless variants.
The only thing "special" about the dev editions is that they keep their warranty intact after unlocking the bootloader. But if it isn't a device SOLD as a DEV edition, you will void its warranty anyways.
And if you happen to have the AT&T, Verizon, or Republic Wireless variant, see the thread in General titled "China Middleman Back" - that guy sells codes that unlock the bootloader on the locked variants. If you pay him and get a code, your phone will be a non-official DEV edition. If you DON'T have AT&T, Verizon, or Republic Wireless variant, you can *already* unlock it *FREE* from Moto's official unlock website.

I don't know if vzw provides unlock codes.
But what I can say is warranty won't affect your chance of getting an unlock code.
You should check on moto website.
If you enter the imei number they'll tell you whether it can be unlocked

No. Moto will never give out the bootloader unlock code on the Non-Developer Edition XT1060 (likely due to their contract with Verizon), and Verizon does not give them out (for dev edition either).
And with the locked bootloader, once 4.4.4 is on your phone, you can't root it.

Its likely for an OLDER ROM.
There were about 3 or 4 different processes for X with a locked bootloader, but it was based on ROM version on the phone (i.e. 4.2.2 w/camera update, 4.4, 4.42). Once 4.4.4 is on there, all past vulnerabilities that were exploited on phones with locked bootloaders have been patched/closed, so if you have 4.4.4 on the phone and can't unlock the bootloader, you can't root.

XT1060 Bootloader unlock

Hi just wondering if i buy this phone http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Blac...41?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item280344d421
Will i be able to unlock the bootloader? assuming it's not verizon if coming from hong kong or would i be wrong? cheers
I'm guessing the "unlocked" in the title means SIM unlocked. If it isn't a developer edition, your only chance to unlock the bootloader is Sunshine.

Would this still hold true given that this is coming from Asia? or are all xt1060s locked aside from the dev model?
As far as I'm aware, yes.

Do you mean that Sunshine might eventually work to unlock the bootloader on XT1060s? or is it working right now?
(I know I can check by just running the app on the phone, but I don't own the phone yet either, was considering buying one)
EDIT: just did a little more research, seems like sunshine will work for XT1060s if it hasn't been upgraded to 4.4.4 . If anyone knows otherwise, please correct me.

I'm not aware of the XT1060 being sold by any other carriers that Verizon in the USA. All Verizon XT1060's are SIM Unlocked (aka carrier unlocked) due to FCC 700mhz C-Block rules.
Moto only gave out the Bootloader unlock code for the Developer Edition XT1060. Sunshine will work so long as the phone is on 4.4.2 and has NEVER been flashed with 4.4.4 or higher.

It was either just lucky, or you used the China Middle Seller/Middle man that was available long ago and not Moto's web site.
