Light bleed !!

Im very picky so first I notice a tiny chip in the surrounding metal and I can feel it by hand, but I thought oh well this is ok if the screen is perfect. but then when I turned the brightness to max, I noticed light bleed at the upper corner. It's also noticeable at 50%. RMA asap.. shame I just got it today, the replacement could take up to 3-5 weeks. Actually I ordered this for my bro who is oversea so I need to get the replacement before the last week of january for my uncle to bring it oversea to him, and this makes me worried if it takes till february. I don't wanna send a defected one to my bro and he's really looking forward to this.

I have 3 noticeable light bleeds all on top. Nothing like the poster above me. But I'm definitely keeping mine.

Turn any LCD to full brightness and you get it, the only reason you don't see it from the media is they all have auto brightness on which solely exists to hide this IMO..
If it bothers you then use OLED.
The so called amazing Retina screens Apple have used have the same issue when you turn it up full brightness....

Wao... actually mine is better than this (only 1 at the top right corner). But consider this is a phone ..light bleed is not acceptable whatsoever. On a tablet it might be ok. I can keep this N4 till I het the replacement. Hopefully the replacement will be better.

You might be right... I have a S3 and there's zero light bleed on every unit ive seen (3 total) since its amoled. Ive never owned a lcd phone so I dont know. But if this is a common issue for lcd screen then im ok with that. I just dont wanna buy a defected one.

Auto brightness exists to save battery and increase brightness only when necessary, not hide light bleed

I find auto brightness to be perfectly acceptable on my nexus 4 (way better than gnex) and notice no light bleed . only time I notice it is on the boot screen

I have similar light bleed on my screen but I never have my phone on full brightness and at auto I notice no light bleed so I am content with that. No other issues with the phone so will not be RMA it just incase I get a phone back with other problems.

Yea, mine is a little less than that and im keeping it. The world is not gonna end if u have this. My gs2 had more and never notice it unless i want it to see it.

lol.. will lg ever learn? this happened on the g2x (but worse).

I have a little on the top right of my screen. I do notice it, especially since I'm coming from an AMOLED screen. This phone is easy better, and I don't want to RMA it and chance getting one with a big problem. But my Nexus 7 uses an LCD a well, and there is absolutely no light bleed. My HTC ReZound had no light bleed, and neither did my LG Spectrum... both of which use 720p LCD panels, though slightly smaller ones. So, I'm a little frustrated. But, it's still the best phone I've ever used

any amoled cannot have light bleeding because the technology works differently.
LCD screens have a light behind a liquid display the display cannot emit light and requires an alternative light source to be behind it to shine through so think of it as a sandwich (backlight) / LCD / (glass)
ideally there should be material that prevents most of the light from escaping around the LCD itself however its not a 100% seal hence you get light on the edges; small devices like phones its more noticeable cause the light does not need to travel as far making the issue seem worse. generally this is a normal part of LCD technology however if it is EXTREME you should RMA some light bleeding is normal extreme light bleed is not.
AMOLED Does not have a back light so there is no external light source that can leak out around the screen itself instead the individual pixels emit the light hence AMOLED will never have light bleeding.
so if you have a little light bleed dont RMA you might get something worse and yours is most likely fine; your just complaining about a normal and acceptable flaw in LCD tech.

I've owned 3 different n4's and they all had light bleed. Noticed all had them in the right top corner, with one unit having more bleed at the bottom left. Don't rma it unless it's pretty bad

[Q] Anyone else have parts of their screen with red tint?

As you can see, my first N6 had a pink tint across the whole screen which is why I initiated the RMA. While the replacement is better, there's still a red tint to the right half (bottom half in portrait). Actually looking at both, the reddest tints are in the right half.
I also have some bands that are dimmer than the rest of the screen which is very noticabke when scrolling but not so much if looking at a static picture.
It seems these really are using Note 3 Samsung AMOLED panels because the same complaints were posted on another thread last year.
Both devices were manufactured 11/12 if that makes any difference.
I'm just wondering how common of an issue this is. I don't think I'll RMA again for awhile as I'm just taking up devices that should be going towards fulfilling orders and my replacement is serviceable. But considering the price, I really expected better and I don't think I can stomach the flaw.

You answered your question (the very end statement). I can't really see what you're trying to show in the picture as everyone see's colors differently and not all phone displays/pc monitors are color calibrated in the same ways. GL finding the right display for your tastes. They all have compromises albeit some less than others

You don't have to have a calibrated screen to tell that the top screen is darker than the bottom screen. It's also not hard to tell that the left is lit brighter than the right on both. Whether you see pink or not may be arbitrary but that's why I put it in the description.
My original question of if anyone else is having that issue is not answered just because I found a thread on a year old phone that may or may not be using the same panel Would prefer if other owners chimed in so I don't waste my time RMAing if it's unavoidable.

I have the same problem, the upper part of the screen has a pink Tint and it's bugging the hell out of me, but since i've had my friend bring it with him while coming back from USA, i'm obligated to swallow up whatever defects i find in it

My mistake. In your picture it looks like the right side of both screens is a little darker than the left.
That said, and you don't have to answer these I'm just thinking out loud here, what were your camera settings when you took the picture? What camera did you use? What screen brightness was each display set to? Could the ambient lighting in the room have affected the photo results? Could there have been inconsistencies in the results caused by the angle of the photograph taken? Those are a few of the variables that I can think of that could skew what we're all looking at.

I used a Sony NEX-5R Mirrorless DSLR. I probably didn't use the best settings (automatic with manual focus) but I was kind of in a rush to get the old one out to UPS to get the CC hold for the new one to drop off. I didn't use any special lighting, just natural day time lighting. I think the pics are pretty representative of how tinted they were though because the old one was very red heavy everywhere. I should have taken additional pictures of the home screen to compare. On the default background, the new one looks turquoisish but the old one was dark blue.
Brightness was at 50% for both and I believe I had adaptive brightness turned off. Either way it was light up much brighter than I keep it at day to day (I usually have it at 25% at most with adaptive brightness on). If I had to compare the pictures to the actual devices I'd say the camera didn't pick up enough of the red tint. So in person, it's much more red and much more obvious.
But honestly, I don't care that much about the tint as much as I do the uniformity. I can live with an all yellow tint or an all red tint if it was consistent across the whole screen. I'm sure a custom kernel will come out at some point with gamma calibration so I can adjust as I please. But the way it is, the top half of the display looks brighter than the bottom half. The easiest way to see this is by setting the keyboard to Material Dark and putting the phone in landscape. The left side of the kb will look greenish grey and the right looks darker purpleish grey.
I've not heard anything about this issue. Maybe one or 2 posts on here and reddit regarding banding. Everyone else says their screens are perfect. I was hoping people would share their pictures so I can tell if I got 2 bad screens or if they're all like that and most people just don't care.

I hear ya. The uniformity, or non, would bother me too

Welcome to the world of amoled. .lol The note 4 has same issue.Replaced 3 times still have pink/purple hue..If u test this image out with brightness turned down a bit you'll see darker area's on display that's causing the issue.

I can see the light / dark difference in the screen with that image, but it doesn't bother me across such a dark background because it still looks grey all over (just to different degrees). I actually find that it's much worse with light backgrounds because it doesn't look all white or light grey. The darker parts are always pinkish. It also doesn't help that Lollipop is all about white screens everywhere either
Also found out that I don't qualify for the extended holiday return, so I have until Friday to return it for a refund. I guess I'll be calling for device #3 earlier than expected and crossing my fingers.

My note 4 looks similar to ur replacement device, the first 2 were really bad,half of bottom was really pink,2nd one the top half was really pink..This one I'm learning to deal with,it just blew my mind last night while laying down in dark messing with wallpapers and noticed all the uneven darkness on dark grey image,dark area's and faint vertical lines everywere.It appears it's from uneven distribution of glue.

I dislike the warm color on mines. Nothing is perfect, there's always something to disliked

Just wanted to toss in my 2 cents. I have had two Nexus 6 devices now, both with discoloration. Both are from ATT. The first device was darker to lighter, from left to right. Current device is darker on top, and lighter on the bottom. It is really frustrating because I love the size, and the screen is great in terms of resolution.
I am thinking about taking this one back as well and returning it. I have never had problems on my smaller devices. It bugs the crap out of me that I can tell the difference, mainly on lighter backgrounds. I don't think I can live with this phone for a year. Waiting on the M8 GPE to get lollipop might be a better solution for me.

Do you recall what the build date for both phones were? Not sure if it matters but couldn't hurt to collect that info.
I just called for RMA #2. Hoping it's at least not worse than the one I have now. I think I'm in agreement with you regarding just returning it and waiting until next year, but I already gave the Nexus 5 to my wife so I'd be downgrading the Nexus 4 she had before that...ouch.

Assuming the date under the sequence number on the box is manufacture date, this one looks like 11/17/14. I didn't think to check out the original device build date, but it shipped 11/18/14 from ATT online and I received it 11/20/14.
I have had my current one now for a day, Moto and ATT claim devices shipping currently shouldn't have screen issues, although my issue is different than the screen not turning on, or flickering.
I was so ready for a big phone, I am still within my 14 day return period, and I'm wondering if I should try this again to see if I can get a good one.

Hi All,
I'm coming in late but I just got my Nexus 6 from AT&T last night. I've been using an N5 since may and haven't had any issues. I noticed this morning when opening Hangouts, Chrome or any other page that displays white as the background that on the top it has a more greenish hue and towards the bottom right it has a purplish hue. I thought it was my eyes at first because it's subtle but when I'm paying 700.00 for a device it better have a perfect screen. So I played around with the adaptive brightness, rotated it etc. It didn't look any less green to purplish. The bottom right side of the phone in portrait (to the right or the charging port in portrait at any given appropriate angle) had a more purplish hue than the top left (opposing the camera). I'll probably be going back to at&t tonight .. which sucks because I JUST got it set up how I liked it. I hate rooting anymore which is why I buy GPE devices. I could have gone with any other device and rooted and may have to get back into that game if this is how crappy this display is going to be. Also I might add that the encryption does slow the device down a little bit compared to the N5.
P.S. Ignore my sig, I need to update that..

For mine (bought from tmo) the bottom is slightly darker than the top. I only noticed when looking hard for the "link" issue. Out of all the issues I could have had, I find this the least annoying of them.
Over all I'm happy.

I just got my Nexus 6 direct from Google (one of the lucky ones) and for the first time ever, a phone screen is really bugging me. There is a tint, darker from left to right. The most expensive Nexus I've ever bought (and I've bought them all) and the worst display. Very sad.
Here's some images, one with contrast as it was hard to photograph. Much more noticeable to the naked eye.
Does anyone NOT have this issue? If so I'd rather take the chance on replacing it.
Update: Returning it for a replacement. Google kindly gave me $10 credit for the troubles.

I received my replacement. The screen seems perfect. No gradient. There are definitely some defunct ones out there, beware. Mine is going back now. I hope you don't get it.

[Q] Uneven Red tint on the screen?

Anyone having issues with their screens?
I have a red tint near the top right corner.. the bottom left is more bright than the top... it appears like a gradient accross the screen... noticable on dark greys... What should I do? is it a defect or are all devices like this?
Help please. any inputs will be appreciated.

The brightness is set to full, adaptive is off. When set to full, the tint is low but noticable.. when set to 50% the tint becomes more prominent.. and I do not have a problem with the tint.. it is just that it is not uniform.. the top right is tinted while the rest of the display is not.. it is really disturbing when reading an email or typing in landscape.

I think color uniformity issues are quite common on this device. You see some threads on reddit and also here on xda about this issue, most people have some sort of yellow or red tint on parts of their displays. The display of my Nexus 6 is a bit more yellow to the lower right of the screen, however I really only notice it on higher brightness with darker colors in apps like Google Camera or the Material Dark keyboard theme. It used to bug me in the beginning, but I somehow got used to it. I don't see the need for an RMA and get a potentially worse device with other defects as mine is perfect otherwise.

I read a lot of articles too.. the device is expensive and at such a price getting a flawed display is unacceptable. Are all nexus 6's suffering from this problem or is it just a defective batch that is affecting some people. ? My device is just 2-3 day old so I can get a replacement.... although I am hesitant to do so..

I know the feeling, when my device was just a few days old I freaked out like this too. It's hard to justify at this price point but the truth is, no device is perfect. I went through several N5's back in the day and none of them were perfect, most of them had a few dead pixels, creaking body or even dust particles in the camera.
If you say your device is perfect otherwise, won't you rather live with such a small and hard to notice defect than going through a cycle of potentially worse devices? If you ask me, don't go for a replacement. But in the end it's up to you.

Here my vendor is sending me a new device. A box packed one. It should arrive in 2-3 days. The tint on mine isn't noticable when the brightness is above 70% , but I cant use the phone continously at night at such high brightness. Besides the tint is so bugging me when reading anything.. browser, play books.. the uneven color temperature from top to bottom.. it is really annoying and considering that I have paid so much for this I wont settle for this. Lets see how the replacement is, I'll post when it arrives.

Got my replacement.
I got my replacement yesterday. THERE IS NO TINT. BUT. the display has a vertical band that is noticable at time. Well, I can put up with this atleast there is no uneven color anymore. I cannot describe how awesome it feels to use a flawless / near flawless display.

light bleed

Are you guys experiencing light bleed from the edges of your Note 8 screen. I just got my Tmobile Note 8 yesterday.

I was hoping to god this wasn't gonna happen again.. I hated this so much with the Note 7 -_-
It isn't bad at all when the brightness is lowered, but looks absolutely disgusting when using the phone for GPS at night.
Last thing I want is for a $1500 phone to look cheap.
Apparently this is "natural" because of the glass and how it reflects light, BUT... all they had to do was wrap the black around it to block that reflective exit alone the edges.. But they didnt.
I may just take my note 8 back over this. I couldn't stand this on my note 7
OP, you should max the brightness, show a white image, and put a credit card on top of the screen and then take a picture.

Wow! I probably would have never noticed, but I do now. Thanks! I have a VZW but it doesn't seem near as bad as yours. Luckily my case covers it so I won't OCD over it, like the bubble I have in the bottom of my screen protector, going back to geek squad tomorrow. On my s7 edge I made them change it out 3 times. :angel:

You probably aren't noticing it because it takes a relatively bright image closer to the edge for it to appear.
View a white image with maxed brightness while covering the majority of the screen, and you will literally see a white ring around the edge of the phone.
Super damn annoying -_-

After reading this post, I immediately took it out of the case, cranked the brightness up, turned the lights off, opened a web page, seen it! Aghhhh! On mine, it seems worst on the right side. Put it back in the case, took a shot, and now trying to forget it was ever there or my eyes will look for it every time, because it IS ANNOYING now that I KNOW it's there!

If it makes you feel better, its only noticeable when the brightness is at a decent level. Plus using a case will get rid of it entirely.
I'll probably whip out the microscope and apply a fine line of black paint along the edge of the glass lol.

I wonder when they're going to get rid of light bleed. I've literally had it on every device with a screen that I've ever owned.
I thought that OLED devices weren't backlit. Blah blah blah individual pixels lit. Isn't that supposed to be a selling point of OLED screens? Where does the light bleed come from?

I thought that OLED devices weren't backlit. Blah blah blah individual pixels lit. Isn't that supposed to be a selling point of OLED screens? Where does the light bleed come from?

It happens because the glass is still thick enough to allow light to travel along the inside and exit throughout the edges.
This is such an easy fix too, which is why I don't understand why this hasn't been fixed. All they have to do is literally wrap the glass around the edges with the same material they're using the the top and sides anyway..

Ahh, ok. Makes sense. Thanks for the explanation. It's different than the standard LCD light bleed then.
Hopefully I won't notice it much while it's in a case.

Zero light bleed on mine.

A blast from the past. Identical thread in the Note 7 and nearly all other forums concerning the 'edge screen design'.
It is not technically "Light bleed" That term is reserved for a phenomena (problem-fault) often common with IPS panels.
What you are seeing is......how can one write.......light escaping NOT into the screen as light bleed but light escaping from the screen.....There is a gap between the body and where the display ends, this tiny tiny tiny space, in certain situations, can indeed shine light OUT but not into the screen and there is a difference but both can be annoying IF we become OCD about it. I guess this situation is part of the edge experience? As suggested by peers, a case will stop such micro reflections or light escaping.

So this is a known issue with Galaxy phones?
I've never experienced it with the Note 7 or currently with the Galaxy S8 plus. Is this enough to get a replacement?

Wow, this thread is like dejavu, I had to really look for it with max brightness in a dark room to find it on both my note 7's. I didn't think it was a big deal but some did. If I get the note 8 I will look for it.

It sounds like you might have to go through more than one replacement to get one that doesn't do it.
Just for fun, I always follow the release of the new iPhone on Macrumors each year, and there's always a huge light bleed thread. I know (now) that this is something completely different than what happens with these phones.. People over there go through numerous replacements to try and get a perfect screen. Many never get one.
I will have my phone in a case from day one, so I guess that I won't see this.

Mine's good... no light bleed at all.

I'm not seeing any either even with the brightness turned all the way up and various bright pictures. There's a slight change in brightness but that's to be expected with the curve but nothing like the pictures.

at least one guy on another forum has reported his light bleed and is getting a replacement in exchange.

So maybe some were built with more of a "gap" there than others.
The way my luck with electronic devices works, I'll definitely have it. Glad that it won't be noticeable when it's in a case. I won't even look for it, because then I'll know it's there for sure and it will bug me.

Weird smearing/band on the screen

So, today at night I noticed that when I'm in the camera in dark areas, or in Spotify with a dark background. I noticed that the screen in the middle from the notch till the chin has a lighter colour than the edges. The width of it is about half the screen centred in the middle. It's kinda like how Zack (jerryrigeverything) puts a lighter to the screen and the pixels turn white, but it's not that extreme. It's only noticeable in low brightness, and dark backgrounds, not black. The most noticeable was in video on the front camera. The "stain" has a lighter blueish tone to it.
I'll leave some pictures for you to test them. I know that when I checked on my phone again with light, the stain wasn't there. Test them in a low lit area, and lower the brightness almost to the lowest setting.

The second pic is the front camera (the most noticeable in person). On xda, I find Spotify to the most noticeable.

Maybe I'm blind but for me everything is ok. Maybe you have DC dimming on. Sometimes screen may look weird in dark areas with that option turned on.

Yes this must be due to DC dimming, called anti-flicker in the settings, shut that off and see if it gets better. If you want to show us how it looks you will have to take a photo of the screen with another camera since it doesn't show in a screenshot. That picture is captured before it is sent to the display. The "anti-flicker" setting is known to produce distortion at low light conditions.

Ok. I'll test it tonight. If I use another camera, it'll just blow the image or just won't show up.

I just checked settings, and I have that I had it switched off. I'll see if it makes a difference.

so ive tested it on and off. With dc on, it made worse. So i left it off. The picture ive taken (which was the best i could take) shows a green hue highlighted with the circle. I dont think its the screen protector as it only shows up on low brightness and dark colours, especially grey. Any ideas?
P.s. It looks a bit worse in person than in the pic.

Oh, now I see but I couldn't reproduce it on my Mi9, no matter what brightness or with DC dimming on/off. I'm afraid it may be some screen issue.

That's a dark gray uniformity issue, it's fairly standard on oleds, especially low end ones such as this one. On mine the green tint is most prominent on the top right corner and gradually lessens to the opposite corner. There might be more uniform ones out there but they're like what, 1 in 10 units? If you say yours actually looks worse than in the photo you might have one of the worse ones, but if you can exchange this unit don't expect to get one that's significantly better. To get one that's surely better you have to go for the more expensive ones because those use newer generation panels so the uniformity issues only show at the darkest of grays and and the brighter parts will actually be brighter white which is correct, not green as is the case with the mi 9 panel(pre 2017 panel, samsung stopped having this issue on the s8).

Thanks for the reply mate! Is there any way to tell what specific (display) model do I have?. My box says it was manufactured in July.

Since I never saw this on a Mi9, not mine or any other, I don't think this is true in the case of the Samsung display used by Xiaomi on the Mi9.
The topic starter should contact the seller and get a replacement.

That’s entirely up to you! Can you disregard the distortion you will be ok, but if you find yourself constantly noticing it and being annoyed by it then it will be well worth the hassle I would guess. But only you know what’s right!

Have this on mine, ordered another one in hopes that I can get a better one but it was slightly worse, checked the one they had in a newly opened mi store, that one had it as well to a similar degree. Saying this doesn't happen on the mi 9 is bollocks, all of them have it to some extent, it's a question of how much you're willing to tolerate.
The best thing you can do IMO when you're in a pickle about returning something is do what I said I did: order another one but keep the first one around, compare and just keep the one you like more. That way you won't feel bad about returning the first one and being stuck with the 2nd or just being stuck with the 1st if you don't return at all. Obviously it all depends if you can fit all this into however much time you've got left to return, I was lucky to have 30 days.
