micro usb cable

I am using the Nook color wall charger, but left my cable at work. my nook was dead, i plugged in using a standard micro usb and the wall charger, it says wait 15 minutes, which makes me believe it is charging it. Let me go check...still says that. Do you think it will charge? I was able to transfer files with the micro usb cable to my SD card on the nook, but it wont charge it?
It may trickle charge on a non-OEM Nook Color cable (a standard micro-USB), so it would probably require charging overnight at the very least to get a near full charge once again, and certainly longer than 15 mins to get it back to usable from a low charge state.
Depends on the output of the charger, but youd likely be looking at anywhere from 4 to 8 gours for a full charge...

i think i can confirm standard micro usb does not charge this thing, even with the nook wall charger. I had it plugged in from being dead for about an hour and it never came on. Thankfully i found the real charger and am back in business.
It will trickle charge for me with the nook cable hooked up to my computer, but I thought this issue was already covered and others said it would charge with a regular usb cable (again on the computer not via the adapter). Is this not the case? I hate to think I'm reliant on the nook's usb cable and can't charge at a friends.
I have charged my NC with the cable from a cell phone. It takes a LOT longer and in fact, doesn't seem to keep up with even moderate use: wifi and web browsing and battery will slowly continue to go down. Just not AS slowly as being unplugged.
But it does charge.
Hopefully someone will find a way to make the damn thing charge without verifying that it's using a Nook cable.

False, it does charge. I assume at .5A, but it's possible it's lower. Haven't looked.

Plug it into any USB source using any cable providing 500mA, it will charge. It won't SHOW it is charging, as it doesn't appear to show charging unless it's on the fast 1.9Ah speed the Nook charger + special Nook cable provides. However, if it's idle enough the thing does charge.
Sitting on my desk playing with adb one day plugged into my workstation it charged 20% in a little over 2 hours. Of course that's pretty slow, but consider this is a 4.0Ah battery, you cannot compare to your phone charge times unless you multiply by 2.5 to 3!
So 20% over 2 hours would be 50-60% over 2 hours on a typical Android phone battery.
you say it charges, but leaving it plugged in from being dead to the Nook wall charger but to a standard USB did not charge it at all. No power
I have no doubt that the nook cable, plugged into a PC will charge it. It is the cable that is different.
Here are the ways that I have verified that my Nook Color wil charge:
NC wall charger/NC usb cable- best and fastest
NC wall charger/Droid usb cable (standard) - charges slowly
other USB wall charger/either usb cable- charges slowly
computer USB/NC usb cable- charges slowly
computer USB/other usb cable- charges slowly
What I have NOT done is completely drain the battery and test.
My guess is this: it charges slowly without a high rating charger and the special NC cable and when it is dead it takes a LONG time to get enough juice to boot.
Another possibility is that device variance has kicked in and while most people seem to get at least a trickle charge out of any cable/charge source we have, other units simply will not.
that is kind of what i was thinking, the fact that it was dead was not enough to even charge it properly where as if it had kind of been charged then maybe it would be more noticable that it was charging.

It charges no matter what cable or charger as long as it's providing reasonable current. Most USB ports and non-fast chargers provide 500mAh.
If it's dead I don't know, I don't do that to LiIon batteries.

charging using usb

Hi,
I bought the nook but live in France. Can i charge my nook with my HTC Desire power supply and cable? The nook usb cable doesnt seems to be "only usb".
Thank you.
You can probably use a standard USB power inverter and generic cable. If it's safe for your Desire, it's almost definitely safe for the NC. However, some cables might randomly not work.
A standard micro-USB and charger will work, but it is slower than the Nook charger. I routinely charge from a powered USB hub at the office.

Ok thank you!
Hi I am also from Europe and I checked that Nook Color have a multi 220/110 voltage charger

You need only plug adapter
Yeah, that what i use for now. As i have my htc power supply alway connected to my wall i wan't to put the NC us power in his box.
I tried one of those cigarette light -> USB adapters for charging the nook in my car. When I plug it in, it wakes up. But it's not charging. Anyone have any idea? I'm using the Nook cable, btw.

It's charging, just slowly. Charging from a standard 500mA USB jack doesn't cause the "Charging" indication to appear in most battery monitors on the NC, but if you leave it there for a while with the screen off and not doing anything you should see the battery percentage go up a bit. It takes about 8 hours for a full charge via USB. It's enough power to either run the NC if you're actively using it OR to charge the battery, not both at once.

[Q] Aftermarket microUSB cords?

I bought a 10ft aftermarket microUSB cord from monoprice for my e-ink nook since the one that comes with it is ridiculously short. Worked great with the original nook. Since then I've bought a nook color and went to charge it with the charger that came with the NC and my aftermarket USB cord. No go. None at all. Not even a little. I read here that the NC and the cord that comes with it is special in that it has more connectors to enable faster charging but I'd think any microUSB would at least charge somewhat. I hate non standard cords because I lose them so often. Am I stuck with the cord that came with the NC?
all my standard usb cords do charge my nc, but VERY SLOWLY.
Yeah, see thats what I thought would happen too. But when I plug it in with the aftermarket cord it doesn't charge at all. Doesn't even say its charging.
It won't say that it's charging but it is. Problem is, it barely does if you're using the device heavily.
Inspection of the microusb tips of a standard cable vs the nook color one should clearly lead you to the conclusion that the nook color's cable is special beyond just the LED. It has more pins in order to deliver more power needed to charge the nook. You must use the cable in conjunction with a power source capable of delivering 2 amps in order to charge the nook properly (meaning it will act similarly and just trickle charge with no charging indicator if you use the nook color cable in a computer's USB port).
To solve the short cable issue I purchased a USB extender cable instead.

It's important that the charger circuitry in the Nook recognize the charging, because overcharging is the worst thing you can do to a Li-ion battery.

alternate source of fast charger?

So I left my NC wall charger and cable in my hotel room in South Korea last weekend, and of course I am back home in TX with no way to charge besides normal microUSB, which takes forever.
Is there any source other than B&N for a high-speed (high current) charger and cable? The B&N one is like $25, which is not too bad, but I still would rather find an alternative if possible.
What you're looking for on the charger is something that's rated at 1.9A or better. Most made for the ipad are 2A. The only alternative I've made use of is a Belkin one they sell at Wallyworld for $20 bucks, (same type deal as you but I still had the cable and was still on the road). With the stock cable I get a full charge in about three hours and with a regular cable I get a full charge overnight. If I had to do it over I might have pushed my schedule a little harder and looked for a B&N so I would have ended up with a "spare" cable out of the deal.

Bummer! I travel to S. Korea regularly in Jan/Feb and in early Aug. Team development programs with Samsung at their Cheonan S1 Training Center. Where do you travel to in S. Korea?
Where as finding an adequate charger seems easy enough, its the cable that's the problem. Has to be an official B&N cable for fast charging. A standard microUSB will charge very slowly. I've yet to find an aftermarket equivalent.
Has anyone checked out a touchpad charger? It looks like it's just a standard micro usb charge that puts out 2A. It seemed to charge my nook reasonably fast but I didn't let it get above 95% since I wasn't sure if it would hurt the battery. I'll have to do a better test to see how long it takes to charge

Here are the results of a very quick test that I just performed:
Nook Color running Mirage CM7 latest version (5/18)
Overclocked to 1100Mhz and interactiveX governer
Screen at 100% brightness
Battery Monitor Widget main graph screen displayed entire time
Logging set for every 60 seconds
Test lasted about 5min for each combination
Battery at about 70%
Nook charger & cable
- average reading of +892mA
- mV increased 3844mV to 4053mV
Touchpad cable & charger
- average reading of -335mA
- mV increased 3847mV to 3901mV
Touchpad cable & Nook charger
- average reading of -407mA
- mV increased 3847mV to 3888mV
Nook cable & Touchpad charger
- average reading of +1211mA
- mV increased 3826mV to 4081mV
So it looks like the Nook cable is the key. As long as you have a charger that puts out around 2 amps or so and the Nook cable, the Nook will fast charge. It actually charged faster on the HP charger (2.0A output vs 1.9A for the Nook charger).
I also tried a cheap data cable I had and it stated "USB charging" and the results were similar to using the HP cable but a bit lower on the mA readings.
I plan to run the test again using a high Amp car charger but I think the results will be pretty much the same.
The best combination for a super fast charge is the HP Touchpad wall charger and the Nook cable
Just call B&N, talk nice. They will either give you a new set, or set you up with an order. They gave one to me, 2 day ship too...
My cable broke last weekend. I went to a BN store, and they sell the cable without the charger for $15.

I don't know about the fast charger, but the charger for a samsung cell phone (not a smart phone just a normal phone) phone will charge the nook. I've accidentally plugged it in and it worked. I've not used it for extended periods so can't speak to its long term ability to work.

I've noticed that my NT on B&N firmware 1.4 will charge on a non-B&N charger, but that the charging status shown in settings always says "not charging". My NC on CM7.2 simply indicates it's charging. I don't know if the B&N status really matters or not, but it is finicky about the wall adapter. If/when you re-test, could you please note the battery status?
Meanwhile, I did some testing with a PowerGen 12v adapter. I was able to get the NT showing "charging (AC)" while using the 1A plug on the adapter with the B&N cable. Reading the little booklet that comes with it indicates that "some devices" can pull more than 1A off this plug, including the "HP touchpad, Kindle Fire". While charging, I did get the erratic screen issue while plugged in. With the B&N charger, the same cable didn't cause this behavior on the NT. Not sure what that means, but you basically can't use it while it charges with the adapter. The 2A plug, described as "for the iPad" shows "not charging" (but not discharging). Using a generic microUSB cable also yields "not charging".
I also tested a EZOPower 7800 mAh supplemental battery. I was able to get a NT showing "charging (AC)" while using the "S" plug, described as compatible with the Samsung P1000 (Galaxy Tab) with the B&N cable. The "I" (iPad) plug did not work. The battery itself does charge off any 1A USB source, and will charge external devices at full 2.1A power as it charges. This means you should be able to let this battery power your NC, while the EZOPower battery charges more slowly from a normal 1A USB 12 VDC or AC adapter. Once the NT is fully charged at full rate, the EZOPower battery will itself charge. There were no screen issues with this combination, and I could use the device as it charged (with the usual cautions about the fragile B&N cable, of course.)
I don't know if the distinction between "not charging" and "charging (AC)" actually means anything, but the B&N firmware seems to care, while CM doesn't.
The reason why people notice they need a stock NC cable to 'fast charge' is that While it appears at first glance to be a standard microUSB plug.... it is not. Go ahead, try and plug it into your cell phone (no, it wont hurt your phone). The NC 'microUSB' plug actually has many more pins than the standard 5 (Something up near 20 as I recall). There are the normal 5 upfront, then the rest as further back. When you plug it in to charge, one of the rear pins connects and can supply the 1.9A max charge current. That 1.9A pin is directly connected to the Power Mgmt chip and is the only way to get high current charge.
The <explicitvie delted) whole story
There are three pieces to this puzzle.
1) a high power 2amp / 2000ma USB charger
2) shorting the correct pins in the cable to let the device know it is connected to a high power charger
3) extra long 12 ping next gen micro usb cable.
Some details...
Not all 1.9 / 2amp chargers are actually 2 amps
Some are 2 x 1amp
Some are mis-represented
etc.
I have tried many...
Some are frauds
Some are designed by idiots.
Few actually work
Yes, this is a Ipad spec.
Shorting the data pins (2 to 3) is required.
Go on eBay and look up pwr+ usb filter.
This little USB type a male to female adapter
does just that
shorts the data pins
finally the cable...
There is a new type of micro USB 12 pin connector on the cable.
The other big side is standard 4 pin.
The micro connector is longer than a standard micro USB.
The are some overseas import cables that work.
A standard USB cable WILL NOT WORK.
PS:
using a standard charger and cable will work but takes 4x longer.
Charging while on will run the battery down.
Pretty much stay with genuine OEM parts.
Especially the cable.
Unless you are tech savvy.
Google 12 pin USB
You can source a good 2amp power supply.
You can use OEM Ipad chargers.
HP makes a good 2A charger. PN 157-10157
12V - Scosche big black 4" long job 2 port 2.1a + 1a
However you must short the data pins with the pwr+!

Nook HD won't charge in car

We have a number of phones and a Nook HD . The nook will not charge from our multiple car chargers. Does the nook only charge from a nook car charger?

To my knowledge the answer is yes. It uses a special 30 pin adapter that has been changed from the normal iPod adapter. It then also needs more juice then a normal USB device.
I would think that if you used the Nook HD cable and a usb 12v adapter that puts out more juice then normal then it should work though I don't know the exact voltage and amperage it needs to charge.
The AC adapter delivers 2 amps so I would think the car charger would have to give the same thing.
Mine charges in a normal car charger, but very slowly. My car charger ifs capable of 2a split between two ports, still nook charges very slowly.

The issue is the voltage that the stock charger puts on the d+ d- pins (data, the two inner pins that are used in standard USB connections to transmit data). It don't know what that voltage is, but the device needs to see that to validate that you are using a valid charging block before it allows it to charge.
I cannot even get my Nook Color charging block to work.

Talk about inconvenient. So my 5000mah battery pack is pretty much a hockey puck for long distance travel. Kind of glad I didn't sell my galaxy tab yet. I just don't understand why companies make it difficult to charge their products. I mean I do, but there's no way I'm dropping another $20 on their car charger. Kinda defeats the purpose of buying it at $200 if I have to invest in all new charging gear.

Just got my HD+ yesterday, upgraded to v2.1, went to B&N and bought the B&N auto setup, tried a Sprint 12v/110v adapter and it charged from 89% to 95 in 15 min, at idle though. If using the HD+ don't know if it would supply enough power.

I bought a UNU ENERPACK VAULT 11000MAH Battery Pack on special and having read about yours, I thought I would try it.
Mine has dual USB outputs--a 1A and a 2.1A. I plugged in the Nook HD+ USB cable into the 2.1A output. Nothing. The charging light comes on green, but battery status show "discharging". For grins and giggles, I tried the 1A jack and IT WORKED! The charging LED is orange, and the battery status show "charging".
How odd that the 2.1A jack does nothing, but the 1A jack works. Someone needs to figure this out! Like it was said above, it shouldn't be so difficult to charge your device. USB charging is meant to be universal. If you're going to design a product that works differently than everything else, at least make it cool, like inductive charging or something!

It has to do with the status of the two inner data pins in the charger. Some chargers either have the pins shorted or have a voltage between them. The HD/HD+ can detect that and set charging accordingly.

Same situation here. The HD+ will charge from some, but not all, of my bricks with USB ports. Works on on my Nook ereader block and my Nexus 7 block, not with some others. And same thing with my 11000ma battery: won't charge from the 2A port but works fine from the 1A port. I think I read once that that has something to do with the way the iPhone charges.
To charge the Nook HD you must use power adapter with 5V and more than 1A (1000mA) of power. The original charger marked as 5V 2A.
In my experience - I've charged Nook HD with 5V 850mA adapter (from Kindle Keyboard), slowly, but surely.
So, proper and stable, branded power adapter will do the job.
5Volts, 1A (1000mA) minimum, but 2A is much better.
HD+ doesn't charge when it's off???
Hey guys,
I tried charging my Nook this morning with the power off because my phone charges much faster this way. But I noticed that the little orange charging light wasn't on and it didn't seem to charge at all. I got to work and plugged the cable into the USB port of my computer and same thing. But when I turn the Nook on it seems to charge fine.
Does the HD+ really have to be powered on to charge or do I have some other issue?
Thanks,
Darien

So has anyone found any good choices for a car adapter..I tried one from Monoprice and it doesn't seem to work.
I just want one that can charge two devices at once.
2 Port USB Car Charger 4.2A - Black Prodcut ID:10239 found @ Monoprice.com
As our mobile devices have increased in capability, their battery and charging needs have also increased. Now you can have up to 4.2 amps of charging power in your car with this 2-Port 4.2A USB Car Charger from Monoprice!
This car charger fits into the auxiliary/cigarette lighter socket in your vehicle. It provides two 5 VDC USB charging ports, both with up to 2.1A of charging power. That is enough power to sufficiently charge two Apple iPads® at once!

I checked voltages on D+ and D- (inner) contacts of Nook's power supply.
Inner contacts are isolated and connected together.
So, any voltage applied to these contact from Apple-fitted adapter with voltage-encoded maximum current ability, will affect operation.
My suggestion is to isolate and shorten inner contacts of one of USB ports of car charger. Apple devices will recognize it as ordinary 0.5A capable USB port, while Nook will be charged at full speed.
I did a short extender cable and it works with iPad and car chargers:good:
I have one that works with my Nexus 7 (2012), which was also notoriously difficult to charge :
http://www.amazon.com/PowerGen-charger-Designed-Android-Devices/dp/B0088U6OZY
But it does not seem to work with my Nook HD+ : the charging light turns green, but the battery icon in the status bar doesn't change to indicate charging. I'm running CM 10.2 (9/24 nightly) with the trim-enabled kernel (sandisk emmc).
