Try using Hangouts.

Thanks for the input, but sorry not an option for me, hangouts is trash imo. Really would rather handcent or stock mms. To ask again, any else experience very compressed almost pixilated photos when sending mms?

Any other suggestions, like a build.prop edit or something?

Go Pro SMS has some specific options for Multimedia MMS settings, and if you attach an image it prompts for conversion and sizes. I can't find the same things for the default Messages app.
There are some tweaks available via the XPosed Framework, too like blocking SMS to MMS messages
*** Correction I'm running the Unity ROM and I'm no longer prompted for the MMS image conversion and it's a very big compression.

What app are you using to send sms?
I've tried both handcent and stock messaging, neither work. I had the same problem with cyanogen. My friend's hero has the same problem.

Im having trouble sending a text message that is greater than 160 characters too. I am using Aosp 2.2, latest one.
I'm surprised we're the only ones having this problem, although most people don't send sms messages over 160. I on the occasion do, so it's a necessity. I recall 2.1 being able to do it.

To send messages over 160 character, you will have to use a SMS app such as Chomp or Handcent to split up the message(s).
@ stayclean
I've tried several SMS applications, including CHOMP, Handcent, Go SMS, and stock. All show that you are going beyond the two page limit, but once you exceed it says send failed.

With Handcent, did you set it to split after 160? If not, you have to go into Settings > Send message settings > Split 160 > Simple Split.

[Q] Google Hangouts vs. stock messaging app

For SMS and the like, do you use the official/stock messaging app or Google Hangouts?
Nether, I use YAATA. There is quite a bit to choose from.
I use Chomp or Textra, many more options to configure including delayed sending(if you notice you are sending to wrong person) & ability to choose multiple recipients(group text) simply
I used hangouts on my LG g2 for ages, but I haven't missed it yet on the z3c yet..... But I've only had the z3c a week haha.
Anything you guys don't like about the stock msg app in particular? Or is it mainly that the others have more options to tweak?
Was just randomly inquiring.
I'm currently using the stock messaging app and have no issues.

I do like having a few more options but mainly I like dark themes and third party messaging apps offer those.
I use Textra myself, been quite happy with it thus far, enjoy the customization options in terms of LED and notification bubbles and sounds that you can customize per contact.

I was a fan of Textra early on. However, I don't understand why they continue to use their own database for sent messages. They used to only keep sent messages in their database thus preventing you from doing backups. They now copy sent messages from their database to the Android database so backups and restores work fine. If you don't mind the extra space used it is a good app. I guess they do it for performance though I don't see any difference between their app and other messaging apps.
I have a group of 50 people, and sometimes i need to send an sms to all of them.
Stock sms app cannot fulfil the job and does not have an option to keep contacts in groups after sending messages.
I have to use handcent instead.
By the way, if anyone knows a decent sms app that can overcome android sms/hour limitation please give me an advice.
Thx in advance!

What ROM are you running? I have seen that setting in CM12. I don't believe it's an Android limitation but rather a ROM setting.
Stock 4.4.4.
I don't have the courage to install a custom rom

MMS in the Stock Text Messaging App on AL10

So I have the AL10 version and normally I use Hangouts as my messaging app. But I noticed over the weekend, it wouldn't send a picture to a friend. So I went into the stock text messaging app and I can't find any way to send or attach a picture. Am I missing something? Will I not be able to MMS any pictures on this phone?
Figured this out finally.

Live message, does this mean the native messaging app can now send GIFs?

I had to use 3rd party messaging apps like Textra to be able to send GIFs, but now it seems that since the stock messaging app utilizes Live Messages by converting them into GIFs, we can now send GIFs in general without size limits. Can anyone confirm this? I would love to be able to take full advantage of Live Messages and sending random GIFs without size limits using just the native messaging app.
Lol that was the first thing I thought of as well during the conference

Never occurred to me but it's rather cool if so...

I just watched a Youtube video where the guy explained that with Live Message you can create a message by writing/drawing with the S-Pen and it converts it to a standardized GIF so any phone can see the animation. It's not like Textra where they have a dedicated link to grab GIFs and attach to your text.
Check this video out:

i've been playing with Live Message on my Note FE with Hangouts; when done, i have to "share the GIF" as a picture versus sending right away to the person i'm texting. seems like a nice feature, not sure how often i would use it tho.
So now it looks like they updated their native messaging app able to send up to 10mb size on the Galaxy s8 series, not sure about lower models. Unfortunately, when using third party keyboards on the native messaging app, the GIFs are still sent as a link unless you download and save them to your phone and send it as an attachment. This is will probably be the same for the Note 8 as well. Why cant they just embed it like the rest? oh well....baby steps I guess. =/
No live messages

This Sucks I got my Note 8 two days ago and you will have to us Textra or another app to send Live Messages. So my question is why include the feature that you can't use with downloading another app on the NOTE 8?
I have the unlocked version of the Note 8 and just sent a live message using the stock messaging app just fine.

Tetra won't compress the image like stock will. In Textra I tried to make an image and it was 9mb, system wouldnt send. Used stock app and it compressed same image to 600kb and sent fine. Tetra or any other app needs to make that adjustment and it doesn't.
I have seen weird behavior with live messages and the stock messaging app. It will play an animation, but often it is truncated, and doesn't run at the proper speed when using the "share" function of live messages. I haven't tried saving them and sending it via an attachment or something else.
Likely something to do with the compression mentioned above I would think.

If your sending to anyone who doesn't have a Samsung device on the same carrier as you it compresses the hell out of the message..... Of you send to someone with a Samsung device on the same carrier it uses Samsung's "RCS" and doesn't compresses so like me and my dad send each other cool fully animated ones... But the ones I send to my fiance's iPhone get all pixelated and choppy.... But it's better than nothing. On my s8 any gif over 1mb would fail. Now it just compresses them for me. I'd rather have that than trying to find another app all the time.

Can't you go into settings, and change image size from best available to original? So the images will not be compressed.

I read that if you change the MMS setting in Textra from System to Legacy Live Messages will send. Lots of positive feedback too but it does not work for me on my AT&T N8. Works fine in stock message app and people who received the GIF say it looks fine. They are all iPhone users. I prefer to use Textra. Gifs also send in Yappy SMS app.

Those settings are only for "chat" meaning other ppl with a Samsung phone on the same carrier as you if I'm not mistaken. Because mine is on original and it's the same outcome as I stated before.
I was able to attach the Live Message GIF to Textra once already in the app, then sending to my wife and daughter who also use Textra was fine. Once or twice it came back as failed, but after a retry, it sent. But I really hate that the native messaging app doesn't allow for adding random animated GIFs like it does in Textra.
While I have only used Live Messages on Twitter (actual tweets, not direct messages), and know it can be accessed from the stock Samsung keyboard (which I hate) and Air Command, I believe they can only be sent in apps that allow animated GIF files to be sent. Most likely, with Samsung's stock messaging app, they probably are being sent as MMS messages, unless there's that extended SMS technology (I forgot the actual name), but I'm not sure if that's true because I don't think the carrier I'm on supports that.

I think Gboard can do that through its blue suggestions, but can't really remember because I have that disabled, and I doubt the Samsung keyboard supports that. Even then, I don't like the stock Samsung touch keyboard, for similar reasons to why i have a "stock Android" theme applied on mine.

facebook messenger mms photos appear for split second then disappear

hello all,
i've been trying to setup facebook messenger as my default text messaging app (meaning sms and mms). i seem to have no trouble sending out and receiving sms messages, but i do not receive mms messages that others send to me, and when i send one out to others, it appears for a split second, then disappears. my app defaults show facebook messenger as the default sms app.

This is an old post, so I hope you found a solution for it. I'm having the same issue an I found if you send it with text or the person sending it includes text it shows up. That's the only fix for it I've found.

On Facebook messenger you can't, but on other sms apps you can. Like on gosms you can include text with the pic which stops it from disappearing. I wouldn't recommend gosms cuz of the ads. I just have an old copy from Titanium back up that I use with no ads. Besides that you have to stick to the sms that comes with it or go with a good sms with no ads an just include text with the pic, unfortunately a person sending you an mms without text, the pic will just dissappear.
