Hi
I appreciate your Android knowledge but..
the 10.5.A.0.230 build number is not Android 4.2.2. It's 4.4.2.
And 4.2.2 is outdated now because there is Android 4.4.4 is released for this device.
Anyway. You getting this error because something in the system is modified by your friend which was rooted. So the updating via OTA won't work for you. I recommend you to you Flashtool software for PC and download a FTF file which contains the whole device software and system and flash it with Flashtool. But your phone will wiped for sure so backup first.

Thanks.

I had the same problem with OTA . Just flash it with the Sony's program (when you connect your phone to PC,you are asked to install this program). It will not deleted anything, but it's better that you do a hard reset after the installation

When downgrading from 4.2.2 to 4.1.2, you need to wipe all data or it won't work. Why do you need the 'Generic US' firmware anyway? Does it contain any special features which you need and which are not available in 'Generic TW'? It's the worst customization when it comes to updates..
it doesn't have any special features, i don't knowt what in Generic TW firmware have. I just worry that if i flash other region firmware i won't get update over the air later. and i think the original firmware is good for me.

Today, Generic US has been updated to 10.3.A.0.423. You don't need an FTF to flash this firmware. Just follow this guide to change your customization number to 1271-0119 and install the update with Sony PC Companion: [GUIDE] Download ANY firmware customization from Sony & create an FTF with Flashtool

LTE firmware is for C6603. The C6602 contains different hardware and has no LTE support. If you flash firmware for the wrong device, you might get connectivity problems and you will no longer receive any software updates from Sony (because they check the first 8 digits of your IMEI number, which is different for C6602 and C6603).
I just updated to 10.3.A.0.423 last night using a FTF I made from PC Companion. Posted here in case anyone needs it

Just noticed that using C6603 firmware for my C6602 phone wasn't a very good idea.... Sony PC Companion doesn't allow me to update it.
After I reflash the C6602 version of firmware, will I be able to automatically update my phone using Sony PC Companion? My phone is a C6602 bought in China but the Chinese firmware has been flashed out of the device.

Were you able to get the phone back to stock? Also is there not a way of flashing the ROM without using the PC and ftf.
I prefer flashing from the phone on CWM because I'm lazy, Is that not an option for installing a stock rom for this phone?

If you find a flashable zip with stock rom, you can flash stock.
But if you have your booloader locked, chances are you lose your root, recovery and go back to barbone kernel.

thanks for the info. Im not 100% knowing if the bootloader is locked or not. I just assumed its unlocked because the phonr is rooted and i'm running AOKP on it. i guess the main reson i want ti know is because i know its not the correct rom for this phone. it works fine but it should be the one that should be for the phone. not c6603 when the phone is a c6602. would you happen to know the link for a cwm flashable rom version of c6602?

OP's issue is solved.
Downgrade your Phone to Jélly Bean
To do that, simply check, if you are able to do that, first.
You can do that by typing the Telephone Number „*#*#7378423#*#*"
Then tap on „Service Information" and go to the Configuration.
After that you've got to go to unlockbootloader[dot]sonymobile[Dot]com to get your Unblock-ID, also-called Unlock-Key.
Accept the terms and Confirm, if you're REALLY SURE!

CVE-2014-3153 (towelroot exploit) is patched in Sony kernel source and doesn't work any more.
To root, you need to flash a 230 kernel with Flashtool, root then flash back the 283 kernel.

Guys! Try this (read it some where)
1. Flash 4.4.4 tft
2. install supersu, and towelroot then
3. flash only 4.4.2 kernel (don't tick anything in wipe, in exclude list tick everything except kernel).
4.It will boot, then root with towelroot, give it a reboot.
5. u're rooted.
6. Now flash only 4.4.4 kernel back

Hi,
Today I have upgraded my "towelrooted" Xperia Z (C6603) from 10.5.1.A.0.230 to 10.5.1.A.0.283 and guess what? To my surprise, the root remained in place in my phone after this upgrade. This is contrary to all my previous experiences with upgrading firmwares in this phone. How did I do that? Nothing special. I have downloaded (OTA) the 10.5.1.A.0.283 firmware and then I let my phone upgrade itself. That's it.
I don't know if this is a region-specific anomaly but I have an unbranded phone purchased in Germany. I checked the details of this newest firmware in my phone and it is a German generic OTA version, exactly this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/general/stock-rom-xperia-z-c6603-10-5-1-0-283-t2876005 , so it's not some special build or something like that.
Until now, all firmware upgrades used to wipe out every single root I had but this upgrade didn't, luckily. Anyone here with the same experience?
Updating via OTA usually doesn't remove root as long as the OTA doesn't fail.
This is because an OTA doesn't format /system, rather it just replaces the necessary files.

You're on the latest available software for your device (C6606). It seems that T-Mo aren't interested in the C6606 any more and won't approve updates for it.
I've seen around the forum that some people have flashed the C6616 firmware to their C6606 with success. You could try that. I'm not sure if you would lose any T-Mo features like wifi calling though and it's obviously at your own risk. Nothing should go wrong though.
If you want to try, you can download and flash the latest C6616 firmware (10.6.A.0.454) by following my guide - How to package and flash stock roms in FTF format

flash tool
@kingvortex buddy hery is something i didnt get http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
(WARNING : Since Xperia Z, sony added a new set of files I called bootbundle. Those files can be bundled from 0.9.13 and can be flashed from 0.9.13 only. To all those flashing devices from Z edition to all after Z, it is highly advised to use 0.9.13 and to be sure FTF you flash contain the bootbundle set. I've been reported of hard bricks because of missing such set of files from bundles.) copied from there
what is this thing ?? and download link for flash tool there are to many links on that page
Just use the latest version. You can download it from here. I suggest downloading via torrent if you can as it's the fastest way.

How did you actually get 5.0.2 installed to your phone after you flashed 6616? Did you use PC companion or do an OTA update?
Thanks ahead of time.

The guide I linked to will allow you to download and directly flash 5.0.2 to your phone.
Here it is again: How to package and flash stock roms in FTF format

Thanks a lot dude. Would've been stuck on 4.3 for I dunno how long if it weren't for you.
So since I updated to 5.0.2 a couple days ago I can't seem to use mobile network for internet access. Only wifi works. Any ideas as to why this is happening?

Did you try downloading Internet settings? It's under Settings -> Wireless & network -> More -> Internet settings.
