Google Services battery drain - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Moto X (2014) arrived two days ago. Battery life is pretty bad - noticed that the "Google Play services" process under Battery seems to take up a lot, more than anything else. My Location is set to "Device only". But under the History battery details (the chart with the battery drain), it shows "GPS on" always - any ideas why?

I turned Google Now off entirely BTW. Turning off location entirely stops GPS from being on but on my old android phone that was always on, just GPS would know be used in Google maps, etc.

Also have "google play services" as my largest battery drain on lollipop. Was just going to start a thread...ugh.
So I've got 2hr SOT right now and google play services is STILL the largest drain. I've cleared cache partition, and did a reset. Any ideas?
On kit Kat, it wasn't even in the battery usage statistics..

Same here.
I almost have same battery time like with KitKat, but now play services is #1 battery user even with 3h SOT. I don't know why and how to stop it.

Interesting, I found the culprit. The Weather Channel app was constantly accessing GPS and that kept the Google Play Services app awake. Uninstalling the app did the trick. Of course it took a full factory reset and a lot of time installing and uninstalling various apps.

[Q] Google Play Services/Now Battery drain observations

So since the latest Google Play Services update, I have been suffering some serious battery drain issues. There are various mentions all around the internet and most point to the issue being 4.2.1, which, we aren't running.
I spent some time over the last few days trying to figure out what the issue is and have some observations. But, for some background, last few days I have been getting no more than 10 hours battery with no more than an hour or two screen time.
Google Play Services is listed as the biggest battery drainer with 49%, so I started looking into that.
First off, I noticed in battery stats that if Wifi is on, the device doesn't deep sleep, even though wifi is set to never on when sleeping, the wifi never turns off and the phone never deep sleeps.
First thing to try was turning off wifi, so, I turned off wifi, straight away, phone deep sleeps again.
Next I began messing with Google related things, first of all I "uninstall updates" on GPlayS, tested with Wifi on, great, no more battery drain, phone sleeps, BUT, phone keeps bugging me with notifications to update.
Next was to update, battery drain returns. So, disable Google Now in its own settings, battery drain remains when on Wifi, however, if I kill "Google Search" after disabling Google Now, the battery drain stops.
Various mention on the internet has attributed it to location history and location services in the "Google Settings" however I have had those disabled for a few days now and they seem not to be the issue in this case.
My conclusion so far is that the link between the latest GPlayS and Google Now is the real killer.
At present, I have Google Now disabled, and no battery drain, Wifi turns itself off as it should and the phone sleeps. This isn't a great solution since I use Google Now regularly.
I'm hoping that unless someone has come up with a realistic solution that doesn't involve disabling services, Google will release an update to fix the issue.
Currently without access to another device other than my N10, I'm unable to test whether this particular version of the issue is specific to the XZ or the GoogleNow/GPlayS versions.
My next test is to install Network Info from F-Droid and Better Battery stats, and see if I can attribute the thing preventing wifi from turning off during sleep, and hence the failure for the device to deep sleep, to a particular activity going on.
Further, I have already tested the GPlayS related services by disabling everything such as Calendar and Contact Sync, disabled all of books, movies, photo sync, disabled Google Plus, none of these had any effect on the issue, which all but rule them out of the equation.
Has anyone else got observations on this, is anyone else suffering the issue, or has anyone got a real solution?
I'm off on Holiday on Saturday and would really like to have access to Google Now back, but not have the battery drain that's going to kill my battery while roaming the streets of Rome without access to a charger.

I shut it off it was draining my battery!
I had the same problem.
And here's a solution for you: Factory data reset
After that there will be no problems with battery drain.

I did a factory reset and have the problem.
So the amount of battery drain has lowered significantly, but it is still there. I attached a screenshot from before the change and a screenshot from after.

[Q] Google Maps sucking offline battery power

Recently, I've noticed that the Maps app really wastes power on standby time. Left the phone for one night from full battery and I wake up the next morning to find battery down to about 74% (no usage between those times), and a short check to the battery management section shows that about 68% of battery usage was due to Maps, and the display used less than 10% of the battery.
It seems that STAMINA Mode can't shut Maps down for one reason or another as it always asks me to force close it, like when I checked my phone first thing this morning. Does anyone have any idea on how to force close it until it's needed? I hardly ever use it, but it just keeps turning itself on again and again during standby, and since there's no blacklist feature in STAMINA Mode, I can't really force it closed either...
Yeah, I had the same issue when I first got the Z running 350 firmware. I disable Google Now, Location services and then reverted all Maps updates to prevent maps eating up battery. Now I'm on 434, I have Google Now and location services disabled, and Maps is up-to-date, the problem haven't came back. This at least works for me.
I've experienced the same issue with both firmwares 350 and 434, the thing is that google maps only seems to suck the battery dry after location services is turned on. You don't need use google maps for the program to kick in and start draining battery. I usually get rid of the problem by turning off location services and killing the app from memory.
I've an exact problem before. You can tried using Greenify application which can hibernate schedulers.

Possible fix for unexplained Play Services drain since last update

Settings > Storage > cached data. Clear it and reboot.
Went from 5% drain with 45mins awake time, back to not registering as a drain with minimal awake time.
Let me know if it works for you.
Edit: The Google Play service was called ApiService in Settings>Apps>Running and hasn't returned.

Had a strange one last night with a Google+ linked website asking me to log in. I was already logged in to Google+. Meanwhile the little white LED blinked all night. Battery showed Google Services gobbled up 60% of the charge.
I have it updated, no drain, didn't do anything special apart from already having Google Play Services' location Services disabled in the "Disable Service" app.

You might not realize it's there if you have other Google Play Services being used. Overall it drained about 3%-5% of my battery with 30-40mins of awake time.
The service was called ApiService under one of the Google Play Services found in Settings > Apps > Running. Since doing this it hasn't come back. Also clearing this data cache doesn't cause you to lose any settings.
Updating the original post with a screen shot.
It worked for me !
I think clearing cache will be a new thing to do when I will have issues in the future. I lost this habit when I decided to stay stock!

Tried to clear the cached and it did get rid of the api services, but I still have the other play services running all the time. The pictures show the three services and the services inside the three main ones. I watched a 3 minute video on uTube and my battery went from 100 to 98 after.

Those will always be there even with Locations off. The ApiService is the unexplained drain, good to see it got rid of it for you also.
My personal fix is to revert Google Search to 3.3.11.x
And then Google Play services stopped going haywire.
Also, turn Location Reporting off.

Exchange Services seemed to be draining the battery - it usually doesn't show up when I look under Settings > Battery to see what's running, now that I got a few settings tweated related to Google Play Services and Android OS - down 20% in a few hours after a full charge isn't the "usual" for my usage pattern.

[Q] Google Play Services and Battery Life

After installation of the latest update to Google Play services , my Moto X has become a battery hog.
Am rooted, have the Verizon Dev model.
Using Greenify BetterBatterystats etc.
Seeing CastSocketMultiplexer.mWakelock appear, never seen it before.
What happened and what else can I do?
I know its a dumb go-to answer but did you try clearing cache and then rebooting?
Also might let it settle, sometimes these things just need a day.

Did clear cache and let things settle for about 5 days. Phone never got below 50%, now needs recharging at the end of the afternoon.
Convinced that this happened after the latest Google Play Services update.
What is that CastSocketWakelock. Can't find much written about it.
I'm not sure. Normally I get a REALLY high wake lock on nlpcollectorwakelock.

I have determined that for whatever reason leaving location settings on battery saver consumes more battery than high accuracy with latest play services. My wife's moto x gets amazing battery life compared to my x. I couldn't figure it out except that she always has high accuracy and I was battery saver. Now I leave it on high accuracy and everything is back to normal for the most part.

Battery life Moto X 2014

Trying to get the most out of the battery. Tried turning as much as I could off. Any suggestions for optimal settings while not cutting all the good out. Currently running 5.1 pure. Rooted greenify everything that says running NFC off BT off location set battery saving. Google now cards off. Still getting extremely high Google services percent. Phone currently at 30%
Also under security and apps with usage access what is this MotoCarelnt.
What SOT are you getting?
OK here is today's still at 64% but barely used the phone and google services still seems high considering I've tried to basically disable everything possible. Also SOT yesterday was about 2hrs.

Here's today's still getting high Google services
Is it just normal or what
I having the same issue. battery draining like mad since I installed 5.1 leak rom. I'm on pure version, not rooted.
Post pics of battery info is your Google services really high

I've been having the same issue the past couple weeks. Phone seems to be staying awake (reported under Android OS). I've tried uninstalling a bunch of apps, turning off BT and location services, etc. Doesn't seem to be doing any good. I used to go to bed with about 50% battery. Now I'm lucky if I have 10% left. Maybe 2 hrs SOT with 50% brightness.
Ok I found this from another thread from another site but I think this might finally be fixed. So go settings->app->all-> then scroll down to google play services. Select uninstall updates and then clear dalvik cache and regular cache and bam! Google services no longer killing battery. Also turn off all the location reporting from Google and anything else you can find and turn off syncing that isn't needed. 2hrs sot at 69% not too bad and also turn LTE preferred to H+ still plenty fast and saves more battery.
so here's the stats after these settings
Definitely better but Google services seem to come creeping back later in the day.(which was said may happen). SOT still pretty dam good but will be interesting to see tomorrow. Obviously there's some little bug going on but I can live with it. Maybe one day someone will actually figure it out. Still an awesome phone. 5hrs SOT at 10% can't complain to much but would be nice to get through a day
I have exactly the same problem! But this didn't happen before. As you can see on my screen. Everything was OK, than I used my phone for a little while and from that point it started draining the battery like crazy. And I din't touch it most of the time! ...
