How I Fixed This
I just had the same issue (using SHOstock ROM 1.9.4, Android 2.3.6, kernal 2.6.35.7) and fixed it by clearing the application cache:
- goto settings
- then applications
- then manage applications
- select Google Play Store
- select Clear cache and Clear data
Hope this works for you.
I have the same problem as well. just started happening today.
The clearing cache/data method does work for me to get back into the Google Play Store, but whenever I try to download anything, it then crashes again. I can browse and view applications. But once I click the accept & download button on any application, it then forces Google Play Store to close. Any help would be greatly appreciated...
Google Play Foce Close on Polaroid tablet
I've attempted the steps from the previous posters and am running running Android 2.3.4 on a Polaroid PMID701C with the 3.4.7 version of Play Store and I can browse files, download them and as soon as the download completes the "Sorry! ...(process com.android.vending) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. Force Close" window appears.
I hope someone who understands this OS better than me can help. By the way, this device didn't come with any Market/Store program loaded so I found the apk on the net and downloaded it, if that matters.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Polaroid PMID701C PLAY STORE
I have this tablet and experienced the same issue. I only have a few minutes right now...but this has to do the read write permissions I believe. There are several forums that outline the install procedure and fix, in this case. Google Play/Market install to tablets and look there. If you have no luck I will check later tonight for some solid links. Good luck-
First post for me in a few years ! Same problem here. HTC Desire, Rooted, S-Off, Redux 1.1.2 ROM. Market updated to Google Play Store, loaded OK, I can search apps etc but as soon as I try to download, or update it crashes with the error message.
Once it has crashed it will not load until I clear cache - it then loads OK but the same happens when I try to download or update an app.
Market was built into the Redux ROM so I've now removed that using File Manager and also removed Market update. Still the same. I've spent the last 2 hours googling for an answer without any success. It appears that most people get a cure by deleting the cache (or maybe they think they have but haven't tried to download!)
I deleted downloadproviderUI.apk and downloadprovider.apk and it didnt work because of that , just add them if you thought they were bloatware and deleted them like I did -_- from the custom rom .zip , delete cache , delete play store , download latest , copy it to /system/app and name it to market.apk and should work fine , works fine for me now , downloads and updates
Google had released the new play store apk. The version is 3.5.16. Have a look on it.

I tried to manually install 3.5.16 over 3.5.15. It fubared my device where it constantly FC'd the app. Couldn't delete it after that so had to restore a back up. Fair warning.

Thanks for the advice but it hasn't worked for me. This is so annoying !!
I updated to ICS over Kies, then restored my apps with Titanium Backup. For those that don't know, Adobe Flash Player is installed as a system app. I think something went wrong with the restore for flash player with TB, because after restore finished, Google Play notified me that there was an update to Flash Player (even though I had already restored the latest version). So I updated through Google Play.
Now my current situation, the flash player doesn't work now. However, the flash player setting icon is still present in Touchwiz. To get it to work, I have to restore it with TB, which installs successfully, even though it's treated as a system app (and at least for me, TB has always hung when trying to restore a system app).
Every time I reboot the phone or power off/on, flash player stops working and I have to restore with TB to get it working again. Checking the list of system apps after I do a restore does not show anything new - so I have a feeling TB is not actually restoring it as a system app?
1) Does anyone know what is causing this problem and how I can fix it?
2) I've pulled up the list of system apps, and the only .apk I can see corresponding to the flash player is titled "com.android.flashplayer-2.apk". Is this how it appears for those of you on stock ICS?
(I also tried removing com.android.flashplayer-2.apk, then installed it as "com.android.flashplayer-1.apk" in system apps and the problem still persisted.)

tried it. i removed the apk from system/apps first, rebooted, then installed from play, rebooted, and ran into the same issue after rebooting
For those who don't want to call google every couple weeks.
I think there are better ways of doing this but it worked for me. Any recommendations for something NOT rom specific.
\Nexus 6\Internal Storage\Android\data\com.google.android.music\files\._playmusicid
"._playmusicid" - You probably need to make a backup of this file every time a new version of the app comes out.
I tried to copy this file over a new install version after a rom change... it did seem to work.
I did the above all from recovery.
I used TiBu to reload just the apk for the app. For some reason a TiBu of this with user app data never worked
I tried it again for giggles and noticed that if you actually play some music on the new id file then overwrite with your back up it will corrupt the play music install... (just force close, delete data folder, reinstall app from store to fix)
Anyone else getting these types of errors or know a fix? I just updated my Play Store to 6.2.13.A-all [0] 2655766 but was still getting these errors on the previous version.
The first picture below is an attempt to update an already installed app, Ultimate Guitar Tabs & Chords. The second picture is an attempt to install a new app to my device, Stack.
These errors occur sometimes on other app installations and updates, not just these two. The troubleshoot link option provides no solutions. I've already tried clearing all Play Store data and cache, wiped the cache from my recovery, and ran CCleaner. Uninstalling updates fixes the issue but the Play Store automatically updates to the latest version. I want to run the latest version anyways. Anyone else run across this issue?

Didn't work.
Try this I suppose
Happening to me now. Seems to only affect the apps that I've moved to the SD card. Uninstalled the updates to Google Play Store and cleared the data and cache without success.
Unmount the sd card before installing or updating the app that causes the error
I've been fed up with the poor battery life on Lollipop and Marshmallow, so I decided to downgrade my Z3c to KitKat. I did it "by the book," using Flashtool to downgrade (I checked both boxes to wipe everything in Flashtool), giefroot, dual recovery, etc. I installed a prerooted zip of 23.0.1.A.5.77 and then flashed RICdefeat and a mod specifically designed for 23.0.1.A.5.77 so I could have Xloud. Both the prerooted firmware and the mod are from XDA. So far so good. I had root and recovery working perfectly, and I started downloading my apps from the Play Store.
Everything looked great until I tried to access the Play store after the first reboot. The Installed Apps under the My Apps menu would not show up at all, and anything I tried to download would just hang at "download pending" and never make any progress. Furthermore I could not download anything from my browser (Chrome). And every time I tried to assign ringtones or notification sounds, Media Storage crashed. I did some searching and found that the Download Manager and Media Storage are somehow linked and seem to be the cause of this problem. Things went back to normal after I cleared the cache (or force closed if there was no clear cache option) from both of those in settings, but this does not persist after a reboot. So every time I reboot the phone, I have to go back and clear those manually, and then re-assign all of my custom sounds (ringtones, notifications, etc) due to media storage being cleared. Luckily I don't reboot all that often, but obviously this is not ideal.
I do have Xposed with a few modules (Gravitybox, Amplify, Greenify, etc.) installed, but this problem occurred before I even installed Xposed. I use Titanium Backup to freeze some of Sony's bloatware. Otherwise I'm basically stock with a locked bootloader, and I have plenty of free space on internal storage.
What is causing my download manager and media storage to keep messing things up, and is there a fix?
You mentioned that you have frozen some of the Sony's bloatware on your phone. Might have something to do with that!
About the download pending on Play Store: Play Store might be needed to be updated, so go to settings (sliding menu from Play Store) and tap on Build Version, it will say something like "Newer version will be downloaded and installed etc" IF you have an old version of the Play Store.
