Note 4 Xposed DPI settings inc. S View cover - Galaxy Note 4 General

Having a huge, high DPI screen on the device is great, but many of the UI elements can be rather larger than is needed, especially if you have decent eyesight.
The best way to make use of this is to use the App Settings Xposed module to reduce the DPI setting for the system.
The default in build.prop is 640, personally I opt for 400 (I followed this guide), with a variety of other apps set individually to my own preference (Hangouts at 320DPI & 115% font size, for example).
Then my S-View cover arrived.
Close the cover for the first time and a thick black bar is present at the bottom of the S View window, with no widgets available.
Reset the System DPI to default and the black bar is gone with the usual widgets visible.
A little experimentation with intermediate DPI settings concluded that when lowering the System DPI the portion of the screen reserved for the S View display scales correctly in width, but not in height.
(Try setting 500dpi, and you lose the lower part of the widgets. Try dragging them with the S Pen in the blacked out portion and they don't respond - the window in which to display the S View app has been shrunk.)
The solution, as with everything, is a compromise.
Using the guide linked above, set the DPI as you desire for System UI (com.android.systemui) in the App Settings Xposed module.
However, return Android System (android) to the default of 640.
The S View window scales accordingly correctly, the Notification pane reduces, but many of the other UI elements will remain their original size.
Most of which can of course be tweaked individually using App Settings again for your most used apps, say 400DPI for Google Now Launcher (com.google.android.quicksearchbox).

superb
Great work ..keep it up

Does any launcher let you increase font size?

I've tried adw, zeam etc but I don't see a means of changing the font size for the icon shortcuts. The default is a little small.
I believe I read spare parts will do the trick (not sure if it works for launchers), but I surprised this isn't a default option. Is this only the case with the nook or do stock android devices not have this option either?
You can use LCD Density to increase the font size but it will also affect graphics too.
There is no default option in the Android OS that I know of to change just the font size.

read the how-to work around issues post stickied on this forum. there is an explaination how to change global sizes. also launcher pro will let you change the number of columns and rows displayed so you can tighten up the icon placement.
Thanks. I know launcher pro will let you set the columns, but I want the fonts bigger, and maybe even the icons.
I assume LCD Density is a separate app?
And I'll look at the stickied how to.
ADW EX (that is the paid version, totally worth it by the way) offers this exact option if you have the "new icons" option checked. It works great for controlling both icon size and label text size.
Cool good to know. I like the screens I've seen of modifying the LCD density, but I don't like it affecting the status icon etc. I wonder if that's an issue with a stock froyo as well?

Well this particular status bar is B&N's, so that will be out of the picture once custom ROMs are ready for daily use. If custom ROMs use the AOSP status bar, I think it's designed for a density of 240.

[Q] Increase DPI of Galaxy Note

I know most of you with think why would i want to increase the DPI of Galaxy note.. Lets just say a special person needs to use it and requires REALLY REALY LARGE fonts.. The largest possible hopefully.. is it possible to increase the DPI higher than 320? if so how?.. Most apps i found only limit to 320 DPI.. what is a safe DPI can i use higher than 320?.. Thanks alot..
if you need large font, just go to settings, accessibility, and change the font size from 'normal' to 'huge'. that should help with some apps. but i think what you want is lower dpi. fonts occupy a set number of pixels on screen. higher dpi makes the pixels smaller and hence font smaller, lower dpi makes the pixels larger, hence font larger.

Its already in Huge but, the its still to small for him to read.. If i decrease the DPI, The resolution of the phone increases and the fonts become smaller.. I tried it.. So far, i got the screen to go up to 400 DPI and the fonts get larger, however if i go beyond the default 320 DPI, the settings application FC.. Anyone have an advice?

Not sure if and how it'll work for you, but there's a "Font changer" app on the market, which can resplace default Droids Sans font on rooted device with any .ttf font of your choosing.
What you could try - if DPI attempts fail - is finding some readable font which will be bigger on the screen. What I mean is that when I tried replacing default device font with e.g. Segoe UI or Tahoma or Calibri (copied from my Windows), some of those fonts were visibly smaller or bigger than Droid Sans - maybe there is sth that's much much bigger than the rest - Arial Black or Impact perhaps?
also - CyanogenMod builds for other devices had small app called Spare Parts, which enabled changing the deafualt font size for all apps. There is similar Spare Parts app on the market, did not try it, but maybe it also has the same ability

The higher the DPI the smaller the fonts will get. Best try to get some large fonts installed. If you are able to change DPI then it means you are rooted so try Absolute System Root Tools or Jrummy Root Toolbox and both have a lot of fonts ranging from small to large and they change the fonts of every text on the phone !!!
I also thought higher DPI, smaller font size. But indeed, higher DPI, bigger font size (like in PC Display)
on ICS, Changing DPI causes bootloop
Has anyone noticed that making these changes on ICS causes the phone to fail to boot? Quite annoying, as I'd like to make better use of the screen estate.
Actually if you use romtoolbox it wont fail at boot. At least with fpi bigger then 219

Space-less grid theme/launcher?

You might be familiar with Grid OS, FusionGarages latest idea that didn't make the market. While that's a more complicated version of the idea, I'd like to see a theme or launcher capable of displaying icons in a perfect grid of squares without any space between the icons. To compensate for inconsistent resolutions, the theme/launcher would need to simply calculate the available space, with or without an outside margin.
The attachment displays a quick concept of this idea. The blueish background represents the wallpaper, the white and black squares represent icons. These icons may be displayed in a variety of ways - glass themed, miui themed, colors based on average color of default icon with the default icon on top (similar to miui), etcetera, but the main feature is the lack of padding between the icons. A pure grid with dimensionless gridlines. I realize an extra row and column could have been added, but nonetheless, it's just a mockup.
There's also the lack of a dock - this may be added somewhere, but not on an edge as that would distort the grid. It needs to be connected seamless and paddingless to the pure grid, with or without an empty row inbetween the dock and the other icons. In the mockup, it may simply be the lowest row of icons, for example. However, a dock would distract from the solidness of the grid as it would only be useful with multiple homescreens, whereas I reckon the theme would work best if the grid is all there is - no distracting slides to different homescreens, overscrolling the necessary margin to the screen edges and distoring the grid on these sides to compensate for resolution, when moving to the new set of icons on a different homescreen. Instead, scrolling (perhaps just vertically), like on Grid OS, could do. In that case, a margin to compensate for screen edges is only optional as well.
Is there such a launcher or similar theme already? Is it something to hope for, for a fellow developer to build upon this idea?
Would really love to see this. Especially since it's different.
Have you tried sslauncher in the play store yet?

Change DPI for the whole system

Hello
i ve got a note 3 with x transformer installed, this app changes the whole dpi of the screen so its displayed way smaller.
i like to have that app on my z1 too but i think that application is for note 3 only.
textdroider dpi app from the play store also changes the settings and it worked allthough it doesnt set new borders so the smaller content can fit the whole screen, its like the screen has the same size but zoomed out , so i cannot put apps on the whole destop and the menu and apps are displayed "small" and dont fit all the screen.
is there another possiblity to change dpi settings?
i found a guide tho where one can change a system file for density but i think that would do the same to the screen as the app did.
ty for your help

In every phone with android you should be able to change dpi in build.prop
