Moto g (2014) call quality problem - G 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got Moto G 2nd Generation. When I am setting 3g preffered network from settings, the voice quality of the calls is pathetic. It is fine while being set on 2g preffered network.
I am using Airtel sim and my data connection plan is 2g. Please help me with this problem.
**Note: I have not tested phone with earphones since I don't have one.

Would be worth testing with earphones if you can borrow some. I find that the call sound quality is very bad without them (possibly due to my case blocking the sound)

Froyo turns of 3G when on Wifi

As the title says, when my Nexus One is connected to a Wifi network it turns off 3G. Which makes since to save battery. I'm in Japan, and use Softbank as my carrier. Softbank does not use 2G for voice, but only 3G for voice and HSPA(+) for data.
So I am unable to receive voice calls while on Wifi...I thought about using Google Voice as a workaround but it still does not support re-routing non-U.S. phone numbers.
Any ideas? I hope custom ROMS such as Cyanogenmod fix this.
Thanks,
Brandon

WOW that stinks. i think that the best thing todo is wait for the source being released and than make a request.
I get 3g when I'm on wifi...
Change your phone settings to WCDMA only.
*#*#4636#*#*
it doesnt turn 3g off, it just removes the 3g icon from next to your signal meter. but you still have hsdpa connection if you go into settings and check. is this what you mean?
uhhh that doesnt sound right... you should still have your 3g voice connection even on wifi...
Yes, the 3G icon goes away when connected to WiFi.
I just tried it again, and it worked. I don't know why it didnt the other times I tried to call from it, and tried calling to the phone,
Thanks

[Q] Moto X 2014 VZW no data during call

I had the original Moto X and just got the new Moto X 2014 on Tuesday. When i'm in the middle of a phone call i get a message saying data is unavailable. During the time of the call I'm on LTE and i never had this issue with the original Moto X. Why is it different with the new Moto X. does anyone know if there is a fix?

Data + Voice will not be available until Verizon releases Advanced Calling 1.0 apk. Will have to use VoLTE. See article here > http://phandroid.com/2014/09/20/verizon-moto-x-launch-without-simultaneous-voice-data/

ahh i see.. thanks for the info! much appreciated!
How will this technology work if one is driving (i.e. calling being routed through the VoIP LTE) and then geographically falls outside of an LTE zone?
I can see how this technology causes frustration. I work in Sales and am constantly holding calls via Bluetooth while driving.

My understanding is that your call will only be via VOLTE if you are doing voice+data. Under this circumstance, your voice call will be dropped when you are no longer within range of LTE.

Incorrect.
Straight out if verizons faq. If you enable volte (advanced calling 1.0) and place any call from a 4g area it will *always* drop if the phone moves to a 3g area.
A call placed in a 3g area will continue on 3g if you move into a LTE area (not drop).
The only way to avoid drop calls is not enable volte. in which case your new moto x will never have voice and data simultaneously.

Sure thing. Verizon is not advertising that fact very well. Its frustrating because they don't have 100% LTE coverage. I will drop calls pulling into my driveway once volte is turned on...

They can stick volte, right up their a$$, its complete garbage, only works between 2 volte phones, drops calls. Yet the went ahead and gimped this device in some kind of thoughtless preparation for the half baked volte plan. Thanks Verizon for ruining data during calls. Idiots!

HD voice and instant video calls will only work between two volte devices. However all calls will be transmitted as data once you enable volte in your account and on your phone.
Another reason to never activate the steaming heap. Head to the country side, and data goes in and out swapping towers and landing in 1x at times. Yet in those areas regular voice services work fine. So it would be a huge downgrade for me and most people I know. Verizon is plain stupid for pulling the trigger on this. Thanks for the info, I know even better to steer clear now.
And they complained
during the switch from AMPS to CDMA, too.
So this is a very serious issue about the x2 Vzw phone?
Is this a deal breaker?

I've read that all new vzw phones will work like this. Curious to know if the note 4 has the two radios or will also rely on volte like the iPhone 6 and new Moto x do.

Cause atleast for me there is no 3G for second sim slot. (I have tried with no sim in first slot and BSNL sim in second slot)

Will nexus 6 support data while on a call?

Apparently the droid turbo can't, which is amazing as far as I'm concerned, and unfortunately a deal breaker for me.
Someone please tell me this phone won't have the same problem?

Verizon

This will be fixed soon on all the new Verizon phones. Same with the Sony Z3v.
It depends on the network. ATT can data and call.
Verizon phones can. I have a note 4 and can make calls while browsing the web

I'm not sure about all Verizon phones I guess. I just mean it's possible on their network right now
At first most likely not. Droid life did a video making a call while on Verizon and it dropped data as soon as it started calling and came back once finished.

Wow hopefully that is fixed with the upcoming update being pushed before release.

Its not something that is broke ....the oem are making these phones with only one path from modem .... either data or phone can use but not both. ..it's been that way since g2 on sprint ...you can use wifi and phone though
You can when vzw goes VoLTE since it will be using the same network type. This uses same antenna as I phone and other moto devices that do not support simultaneous voice and data
Does Sprint's Spark network support it?
I think Verizon has given the date for the update as mid December. At least for the Turbo, that's the case. Still somewhat mystifying why you would release three major "flagship" phones— Sony zv3, Droid Turbo and the Nexus 6— before your ducks are in a row with simultaneous calls and data.

No sprint spark phone can do it .... g2 g3 note 4 s5 none of them
VoLTE
I'm confused. I thought the fact that voice was over CDMA is the reason why we can have simultaneous data and voice. Back before Verizon got LTE there was no simultaneous voice and data. Then once LTE came along, suddenly simultaneous voice and data worked (and has worked for me since). The way this was explained to me was that voice uses CMDA and data uses LTE (which is GSM) so they can coexist.
So I guess I'm confused about two things...
1.) Since simultaneous voice and data has been working for years now, what makes these new phones (Turbo & Nexus 6, specifically) any different. Why is this suddenly a concern again? It feels like 2012 all over again.
2.) Whatever the reason is that it supposedly does not work, why will VoLTE fix things? It seems to me that once we have VoLTE we'd have voice and data both trying to use the same pipe and have issues again, just like before LTE existed and we had only CMDA.
Perhaps someone can explain

1. some newer VZW phones dont have two radios (ie, one for CDMA voice and the other for CDMA or LTE data).
2. VoLTE with one radio has enough bandwith to simultaneously handle both voice and data. However, VoLTE has a much, much bigger problem as I see it:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/advanced-calling-faqs/
Will my call be handed off automatically when I move from the 3G network to the 4G LTE network and vice versa with Advanced Calling 1.0?
No, calls won t switch between 3G and 4G LTE networks. If your call starts on the 3G network and you move to a 4G LTE coverage area, your call will continue as a 3G/CDMA call. However, if your call starts on the 4G LTE network and you move to a non-4G coverage area, your call will drop.
I live in Houston....presumably a place with lots of LTE coverage. In reality, I am constantly switching between LTE and 3G. with VoLTE, I'll be dropping calls like crazy.

I'm in Katy, travel all over Houston working. While T-Mobile has a very large LTE area down here, I do see the signals changing very often depending on part of town I'm in

WiFi calling to cellular handoff

I'm finding that when I'm on a WiFi call and leave the house, the phone dosent switch to cellular. The phone drops the call and I have to call the person back. Is there any setting to enable smooth handoffs or is this an inherent issue with WiFi calling?

Have you tried going into developer options, and ticking aggressive WiFi to cellular handoff?
I'll give that a try. Thanks
If you are on T-Mobile, I don't think it will do a WiFi-Cellular hand off, will it? I thought T-Mobile still uses IMS technology.
The older wifi calling tech, UMA, does handoffs nicely. The older Blackberrys and Nokias have it.
Enabled the aggressive wfi to cellular handoff and that seems to work now. Thanks.
