I had recently opened a thread here asking the possible cause for the heating up of my phone. After getting it diagnosed at the local service center, I discovered that my 32 GB Sandisk class 10 microsd card is the culprit that is causing the heat-up. Unseating my microsd card from my phone does the following things/improvements:
1. Phone doesn't heatup (isn't prominent with back cover) while playing hd videos & while browsing data
2. Battery lasts longer
After I insert the microsd card, I would notice that my phone would normally heat up below the rear camera & below the ear-piece, as it would previously. I have witnessed my phone getting hot upto 47 °C (under mild to moderate usage) ! That's unbearable.
Possible causes
1. Is the SD card defective ? Please note that... I have noticed this exact issue on two different 32 GB Sandisk Class-10 cards which I own. The local service center told me that your sd card might have short-circuited & would be causing the heat-up. They couldn't test it since I hadn't take it there.
2. Is the android indexing service running constantly & triggering the heat up?
Some Additional Info:
1. Most of the data in my sd card are multimedia files/ android apks
2. while taking out the concerned card from it's original adapter/reader(inserted in my pc) , after copying, say 6-7GB of data, I had also witnessed it getting really warm. Is this normal ?
3. A similar concern here can also give you a better idea
Can anybody please confirm & tell if this is a known issue with large capacity sandisk high capacity cards (16GB>) so that I can switch to a sd card of a different make that most of you use & recommend or should i purchased a lower capacity sdcard?
Any other workaround that will likely work (formatting the card on the phone instead of PC/ using custom rom)

Some more info please.
1. What if SD card is freshly formated. (not quick format). An empty SD card still causes it?
2. Did you install any software like Xposed module or SD mount? Or have you swapped internal mem for SD card? (Some do it)
3. Does stock ROM also cause it?
4. Use move to phone option in the app. Move media to internal memory. Play it. Still heat?
I own 16 GB Trascend. No issue.

thank u for taking the time to write back Coming to your questions, I will answer them in the order they are numbered
1. I haven't tried inserting an empty SD card & check if this issue comes up
2. No I don't have any xposed module installed but I do have an app installed called "folder mount" but I have disabled it from starting up automatically (on boot/ when network connectivity changes)
3. Ya..all this I have witnessed on stock v10d ROM & I haven't installed any custom rom on my current phone yet.
4. I will try doing that but that won't be a fix because my video library won't fit in there
I would like to also add here that a day before I took my phone to the service centre, I was at a friend's house where he had deliberately put his 16 GB microsd card (Transcend Class 10, in this case) so that we could check if the phone heated up & surprisingly IT DIDN'T !
We had tried playing a full hd vid in mx player at full volume & brightness for 4-7 mins & there was no sign of heating.
Did this happen because the card was of 16 GB & had considerably less videos/ because card was of different make?
I don't have own a 16GB card personally since my previous phone was a moto g & before that I owned a P500 (optimus one) in which I put a Transcend 8GB class IV card.

Still cant know if its a software problem or a hardware problem until you test all of the above.
Does folder mount make your SDcard the internal memory?
Internal memory is heavily accessed by all Apps.
A 32 gb sd card will have twice the address length compared to a 16GB. At high speeds and at a high access rate, it may lead to a problem.
If you did swap SD an internal storage functions, you should consider switching back.
SD fix in Xposed module gives you full access to SD card. I think it is better than folder mount.
I do not own any 32 GB card of any company and hence cannot comment on hardware.

no it doesn't! it just makes mounts the app data so that the respective app understands it's in the internal memory. I haven't installed that xposed module for swapping external sd as internal memory yet but yes..I do have full write access to my sd card by installing SDfix app from playstore.
I think, I should insert a freshly formatted sd card (as u recommended), move current data to internal memory, test & then report here. Let me see how it goes.

does it get as warm as that of mine? pls monitor the temp using a coolify and share ur details. is the principal content of your sd card : video? have you tried testing it with a sd card of a different make (transcend/strontium/kingston/sony/samsung etc)?
Yes while playing video on YouTube, playing games, it heats up and drain battery very quickly. Right now i m traveling so cannot do any sort of testing. But during travel, within 2 hrs of music listening using ear phones, it drained 10% battery.

My apologies for the delayed reply! you should consider removing the SD card fully and check if the isssue persists. Also try decreasing your SD card content or use a blank SD card/one that contains other data than that of yours. monitor the temp & then report

So, I purchased 8GB SanDisc micro SD card 4-5 months ago and it started to acting weird. When browsing pictures, some pictures have glitches meaning half picture is bluish and half greenish, sometimes redish.
Disconnecting and connecting SD card solves the problem but after several days problem continues. Few days ago I received message that my SD card is broken and it needs to be formatted. I formatted it and it worked 2-3 days and then again started to act weird.
Is my SD card broken or maybe it is phone? Someone else with such experience?
Thanks.
Same story here. This has happened with 2 out of 3 cards i have owned.

Really strange. It is important to detect are there really broken SD cards or our phones make bad SD card under some conditions/roots/ROMs. Hmmm....
First: when you will have such message, remove it and try to access it on PC. If it will work on PC - then it is the phone problem.
If not... well, where have you purchased it? SanDisc cards are covered by Lifetime Warranty, and thing what you have to do is to make claim.
Of course, if you have bought it for bargain price on eBay from China, then...
Thanks. I bought it in Mediamarkt, regular store for IT accessories. I will make a claim if this problem repeat.
I had the same problem with 16GB sandisk card so replaced it (JB hifi - reliable Aus store who replaced it for free). Same prob with new card though. both cards reformatted many times but still no joy.
photos taken with phone cam and saved to int SD no problem, but every so often if saved to ext SD the glitch occurs. Photos taken with a digicam then transferred to SD same prob - randomly in gallery won't show some photos properly.
Also discovered that videos made on pc (like clips from films my son likes) but put on ext SD often don't play well or stop before end of clip - no problem if saved to int SD.
I figured it was a bug with the SGS in dealing with files on ext SD - super annoying but have basically accepted it as can't find anyway to fix it!
FYI Recuva is a great program to retrieve lost files
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
forgot to mention that on my phone, it only seems that photos or videos are affected by this glitch.
I have mp3 files, homemade ringtones and word docs on the ext SD and so far (touch wood) haven't had any problems with using them or viewing them etc.
DoctorV, exact my story. I am assuming that problem is in SGS, although I tried Sandisc 4GB card and 3 days without problems. As soon as I put back Sandisc 8GB, problems started. Very strange and annoying.

Interesting - wonder if it has anything to do with the size of the SD card then? From memory my 2nd 16GB card had no problem for 3 or 4 days too before the issue happened again. Let us know if your 4GB continues to do ok - I may try a smaller card if yours seems to work ok.
thanks
I had 8G SanDisk - no problem for 3 mths, when I replaced it with Sandisk 16G. both were class 6. the second one - 4mths in sgs now - no problem at all.
@doktorV you, in australia, are too close to China, you know
Additional question: which gallery viewer are you using? Both, you that have problems with SD card and you that never had problems with SD card?
I noticed that in QuickPic I picked picture, picture is opened with errors (strange colors or even 3/4 picture is missing) and when I open same picture in stock gallery viewer few minutes later, everything is fine. After opening same picture in QuickPic, it is OK.
After 1-2 hours problem repeats. It is really seems like SW problem and not problem with SD card. Don't know...
I dont know if there is still some activity here..
My sd-card (lexar 8gb SDhc ) is recognized by pc and phone.. after insert it scans.. scan is ok. then a few second - minutes is says sd card is broken and needs to be formatted after format it goes to scan scan ok ... and again broken repeat....
is this a problem with my sd card ? does it matter if its an regular SD or an SDhc ?
and when I format in on pc in wich sort should it be ? stock of ext3 ? or anything like that ?
since im on custom rom now I can format it in my phone ( darknight 4.0.4, when I click format sd card it formats the wrong sd card so I cant use this option )
but its not in the custom rom, had the phone on stock 2.3.6 and the same problem was there. ( also on stock 2.3.3 same problem )
Can I conclude this actually is a '' broken card '' or can I change the settings and make it work ?
thanks in front....
hi, i have a micro sd 4gb class 6 and my phone works fine, When i put the original micro sd 8gb class 2, the notification icon of "preparing SD" doesn't dissapper and when the screen go off i can't turn it on because never shows me the screen, only the inferior buttons lights on (nothing i can press) and i have to pull over the battery to make the phone works, i put a micro sd 8gb class 4 and the same happens, i've tried to increase the cache memory to 2048 bytes using "SDBOSTER" and nothing happens with the micro sd 8gb, but my micro sd 4gb works faster.
Can anyone help me to solve this problem? i want more space in my external memory.
I'm using original eclair 2.1-update ROM
Hey jp23,
I recently encountered this problem with my stock 8 GB class 2 card, while transfering files in bulk to the card. I use linux on my laptop and there is a known bug in one of the drivers which causes failures while tranfering large amounts of data in one go. For me it caused the same issue, and thats usually because the card is temporarily corrupted.
For me the fix was buying a microSD card adapter and formatting the card once through the computer and not the phone. I also bought a 16GB class 4 card in the process.
I suggest formatting your card via a card reader or adapter and then trying it on your phone. Although I find it odd how both of your cards can have the same problem. Hope this helps.
I've tried this before and works when the card storage it's <1gb, when i put some mp3 files and pass 4gb or more the same thing happen.
i don't know what to do...

format it with LLF low level format from hd guru, it always fix my sd card whenever it corrupted.
My card it's not corrupted, i've checked that before.
I bought a micro sd 8gb class 4 and set format as fat32 and put it on the phone, then i connected to the pc using sd adapter to put some music and videos, and when i put the sd back to the phone got the same issue...
I updated to BRAVO yesterday and have no solutions for my micro sd 8gb class 4
i have a similar issue with my 8gb stock sd card too, when i try to open the media gallery or push the media gallery button, my phone shows me that there's a problem with read/write into the sd card... =(
always it says me : "Failed to Read/Write SD Card" and also i cant record any hd video cuze when i try to do it, the video get freeze and stop to record ..
im thinking to buy another sd card, maybe 10 class ..

I just purchased a Micro Innovations Wireless keyboard for my Zaurus-SL5600, but theres a problem; I dont know how to physically set it up to work. I can type with it, and the Z recognizes it fine, but the problem is that the Z has its infra-port on its side, so I cant use the stand The keyboard has it just above the w key, and I dont know how I could rotate the screen.. Does anyone have any ideas?
Yack
Too bad with micro sd
Tried to download some files but I had to download it to phone's internal memory and then move it to sd card, since the phone doesn't allow to write to sd card.
and another problem, I bought an sdxc 64gb sd card. there's another way to transfer files from my pc to sd card in fast speed? should be like 40+ mb/s and it's transfering files around 4 mb/s, guess it's the lack of usb 3.0 port on the phone.
any faster way other than buying a usb 3.0 card reader?
airdroid and another wireless methods didn't work for me.
Thank you guys.
You're limited to what the phones USB controller allows you to communicate with it, and I suppose it used MTP anyway which is utter crap and slow.
As for downloading directly to SD card, it's impossible because Google put SD-card access limitations in it since KitKat. No worries however since Android L should re-enable those permissions again. (Apps now can only save in their own specific directory on the SD card in /sdcard1/Android/data/com.vendor.appname, so you better wait a while. If you absolutely need to move things between your SD card and internal memory to your own folders, the built-in File Commander has permissions to access your SD card fully.
You can d load files directly to your SD Card.
Settings> Xperia Connectivity > USB Connectivity> Wireless Media Transfer
You'll probably need to install the PC Companion software, and make sure that your screen time-out/stamina is off while it pairs for the first time, but then you can d/load files to your SD card.

tried that, it gets stuck and if I unplug the phone it says something about firewall and upnp, tried to disable the firewall and still the same.
No, it doesn't stick, it just takes a *very long time* to pair (once it is, it's fine) and you MUST make sure your display doesn't time out or Stamina mode kick in during the process

Another question, sorry for quoting you.
Tried to transfer some music, movies and tv series to the sd card. With teracopy everything seems ok.
After disconnecting the phone from pc either the music won't show or the movies, or tv series.
Befor I unplug the phone all the files appear but after I'm unplugging the phone it won't show the files on yhe phone and on the pc either.
Could it be a damaged sd card or it may cause by using exfat format? Couldn't find a way to format into fat32 format.
Any suggestions?
Are you sure the apps you are using to play/view let you into the SD Card?
I have several thousand songs and some movies on my SD Card and they are viewable from my apps.
The best way to format your SD Card would be from the phone itself if you want to guarantee the phone recognising the contents. I believe you use Settings > Storage > Erase SD card (My understanding is that it will format the SDCard too) write speed will be determined by the SD Card too, is it a high speed card? I also find that if you try and write multiple files, it slows down everything hugely, so I tend to do files singly (in the case of movies) and in smallish batches if music.
If you're using wi-fi, the speed of the network/distance from the router will play a part too

The item has been removed from ebay so here is some details but not the model number
64GB SanDisk Extreme Micro SDXC Memory Card Class 10 - 45MB/s UHS-I U1
Formatting it through the phone makes it exfat.
And yes I'm sure it's the external sd card.
But how is it possible that the sd card is full, I unplug it and plug it again and the folders are there but they are empty, plus no matter what is the size of the files that I transfer I have like 4-6 free gb's, there should be like 40 free gb's after the size of the files that I transferred.
You should consider that perhaps you got a cheap copy card and it's not working at the speed it should be, there are card speed apps on Android Market that should be able to tell you how fast its working. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.a1dev.sdbench&hl=en

Yes, it's a fake for sure.
About 2-3 mb/s reand and write.
Since the item removed from ebay I can't open a dispute. Hope PayPal will refund me.
If nothing else, at least we've worked out the problem
Not sure if this was already solved.
If you go on Camera, Settings, "Data Storage" change to SD Card.
Erasing the SD card from the phone seems to work more efficiently to provide you the confidence of starting from scratch.
Now everytime I take pictures or Videos, it is transferred straight to my SD Card.
Hope this helps for some that is still having some difficulties with the topic.

I feel the same way. More trouble than its worth. The 64GB is plenty for all your apps and for everything else you have your fat Micro SD card.
I can't find half a reason to bother with it. 1. Many apps, especially larger one will use SD card for storage, if not you can set it to do so in settings. 2. SD card is slower than internal memory, so frequently used programs shouldn't be there 3. It creates whole lot of problems if SD card goes bad and yes, had this happen to me multiple times on Sandisk included. 4. it can get complicated when you swap the cards between phones, computers etc and you use the phone without dedicated SD card inside 5. If you really think 64GB internal storage doesn't do it, hunt for elusive 128 and 256 GB versions. They should show up somewhere.
The only a reason to do it I can think off: "because I can?"
I wouldn't do it unless the UFS ever comes out. Supposed to be a lot faster external storage.
Sent from my LGV20 using yo Mama's unlocked bootloader.
If anybody does want to enable adoptable storage on the Note8 despite the potential issues, try ashyx's patch here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/general/patch-adoptable-storage-enabler-t3460478
Note:
- You will need TWRP installed.
- It might not work for you. I've only tested it with Renovate.
- You will need to use adb to set up your sd card.
You won't do it on an unrooted phone. Samsung never implemented it.
The phone's built in memory is far faster than any SD card at this point. You'd be slowing your phone down... and not by just a little bit.
I beg to differ
Agree the phones internal memory is tops right now.
Disagree the phone will be slow if you offload storage.
Source: i have virtually every app i use daily (Save a couple) moved to SD card and ive noticed NO.. I repeat NO.. noticeable difference in speed or issue by moving these apps. And im talking about WhatsApp, textra, several video playing apps, Instagram, Snapchat, outlook mobile, and some other apps.
There is SOME residual data from these apps that LIVE on the internal storage—perhaps this left over data keeps the app from bottlenecking from the SD card. This is speculation though.
If interested, in mexico, the largest carrier, telcel offers the 128 Gb model
Hi guys,
What is the fastest memory card speed G6 (not plus/play) can use? Somewhere I read Motorola recommends U1 or faster. Is it worth investing in a fast card?
E.g. a Sandisk 32GB 100/90 MB/s is the same price as a Samsung 64GB 100/60 MB/s so if the phone couldn't use the fastest speed anyway, I'd rather take larger capacity.
I'm planning to put apps on the card. My old phone has slowed down considerably when I did that, so if the G6 CAN use the faster speed, I'd prefer that.
Thanks!
Sandisk 160/60 card gets 77/44 on moto g6. The same card gets higher speed on a lower end phone. Apps run okay at that speed on g6 but don't know if consistent use for apps lowers overall performance. Other users should post their speeds so we can get an idea what's the max speed g6 can get out of microsd cards.
Actualy in the meantime I bought the Sandisk Extreme Plus A1/V30 (95/90 MB/s), I just haven't installed it in the phone yet.

I used androbench. Please post the speeds on this card. I'll predict around 80/50. I have this suspicion that g6's card reader might be low quality. But it would be nice to be proven wrong on that.

Okay I put the card in the phone and ran 4 tests with Androbench. The *best* results, rounded up to 5/50 from each category are:
Squential read/write: 80/65 MB/s
Random r/w: 4200/1400 IOPS
SQL Insert/Update/Delete: 950/1200/1900 QPS
This is a brand new Sandisk Extreme Plus 32GB card (95/90 MB/s) formatted as external storage.
Also ran 2 tests on internal storage (note this phone has been in use for 2 weeks and it's half full so there's certainly some data fragmentation):
Squential read/write: 260/100 MB/s
Random r/w: 11600/5300 IOPS
SQL Insert/Update/Delete: 1100/1200/1550 QPS
Not sure what to think of the SQL numbers but in the random r/w performance the internal memory trashes the memory card so it's probably not the best for running apps. Sequential write is quite close though so I guess Sandisk's claim of 4k video recording holds true.
Hm, I wonder if there are memory cards meant for faster random access (like an SSD) and would phones be able to take advantage of such speed?
Edit: fixed my mistake about what card I have. It's a Extreme Plus 95/90, not Pro.
~ never mind, a rant was here how I can't format the card as internal storage but I found it. Good.
After formatting as internal, the phone complained the card is slow.
I let it move 4.5 GB of data from internal memory to the card, which the phone said would take 7 minutes. It was done in about a minute.

I've seen that too (phone warning the card is too slow) when I was experimenting with internal storage format. If you face any issues like phone wigging out or apps going missing or card crashing, let us know here.

No problems so far!
On my last phone with a basic Class 10 Kingston card, I had problems with apps disappearing after a reboot. It was especially annoying with Amazon Kindle which was the biggest (movable) app and I had to keep it in the phone memory.
No problems with the Moto. I even enabled the developer option to force apps which don't support it onto the card and they all work fine. Which is super cool especially for navigation apps with their massive offline maps. Neither Sygic nor HERE We Go support moving the app onto the card. (In both cases you can move the maps onto the card but only if it's formatted as external storage, not internal.)
Apps start really fast. I *think* I can sense some slowdown when running some apps like Duolingo and LingoDeer compared to when running from internal memory, but it might as well be my imagination. I see no slowdown when running Waze which is a lot larger. And the phone is slightly slower to boot but that's no biggie. It wasn't fast to begin with. But all the card apps are available IMMEDIATELLY upon booting, while on my old phone/card it took another minute to initialize.
Last night I noticed the phone tends to kill background apps way too aggressively, which is bloody annoying but I doubt that has anything to do with the card, it's more like another stupid Android/Motorola feature. (I have the adaptive battery feature disabled.)
Another odd thing is that the storage reports 5 gigs of games in the internal memory even when I moved all games onto the card, so that's clearly another Android bug.
So yea, I think it was worth it investing a little more in a faster card. I wish the phone would be faster overall but for what it is it's fine and the card isn't slowing it down so far.
